This study evaluates the potential use of discarded plasterboard paper as fibers from buildings to reinforce concrete. Various concentrations of wastepaper fibers (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% by weight of the binder) were investigated in this research. To mitigate the water absorption effect of the paper fibers, metakaolin was employed as a partial cement replacement. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of the wastepaper fiber enhances the mechanical and durability performance of the concrete. The optimal fiber proportion was identified as 1%, leading to a 29% increase in the compressive strength, a 38% increase in the splitting tensile strength, a 12% decrease in the water absorption, and a 23% decrease in the drying shrinkage with respect to the concrete containing 20% metakaolin. However, exceeding this optimal fiber content results in decreased mechanical and durability properties due to the fiber agglomeration and non-uniform fiber distribution within the concrete matrix. Based on the microstructural analysis, the improved performance of the concrete is ascribed to decreased porosity, more refined pore structure, and reduced propagation of microcracks within the concrete matrix in the presence of wastepaper fiber. According to the results, concrete containing 20% metakaolin and 1% wastepaper fiber exhibits durability and mechanical properties comparable to those of the traditional concrete. This finding highlights the significant promise of reducing dependency on conventional cement and incorporating suitable recycled materials, such as discarded plasterboard, and secondary by-products like metakaolin. This paper investigates the high temperature resistance performance and mechanism of potassium-activated blended precursor geopolymer with silica fume. The failure morphology, volume, and mass loss, compressive strength deterioration, hydration production, and pore structure are measured and analyzed. The results show that introducing slag into fly ash-based geopolymer could greatly improve the 28 d compressive strength but reduce the thermal stability. In contrast, the partial substitution of fly ash by metakaolin contributes to excellent high temperature resistance with slightly enhanced 28 d compressive strength. After being exposed at 800 °C, the residual compressive strength of F7M3 remains at 37 MPa, almost 114% of the initial ambient-temperature strength. An appropriately enlarged silica fume content in geopolymer results in increased compressive strength and enhanced thermal stability. However, an excessive silica fume content is detrimental to the generation of alkali-aluminosilicate gels and ceramic-like phases and thus exacerbates the high temperature damage. Additive manufacturing (AM) is often used to create designs inspired by topology optimization and biological structures, yielding unique cross-sectional geometries spanning across scales. However, manufacturing defects intrinsic to AM can affect material properties, limiting the applicability of a uniform material model across diverse cross-sections. To examine this phenomenon, this paper explores the influence of specimen size and layer height on the compressive modulus of polycarbonate (PC) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) specimens fabricated using fused filament fabrication (FFF). Micro-computed tomography imaging and compression testing were conducted on the printed samples. The results indicate that while variations in the modulus were statistically significant due to both layer height and size of the specimen in TPU, variations in PC were only statistically significant due to layer height. The highest elastic modulus was observed at a 0.2 mm layer height for both materials across different sizes. These findings offer valuable insights into design components for FFF, emphasizing the importance of considering mechanical property variations due to feature size, especially in TPU. Furthermore, locations with a higher probability of failure are recommended to be printed closer to the print bed, especially for TPU, because of the lower void volume fraction observed near the heated print bed. Adding fibers into cement to form fiber-reinforced soil cement material can effectively enhance its physical and mechanical properties. In order to investigate the effect of fiber type and dosage on the strength of fiber-reinforced soil cement, polypropylene fibers (PPFs), polyvinyl alcohol fibers (PVAFs), and glass fibers (GFs) were blended according to the mass fraction of the mixture of cement and dry soil (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%). Unconfined compressive strength tests, split tensile strength tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) pore structure analysis tests were conducted. The results indicated that the unconfined compressive strength of the three types of fiber-reinforced soil cement peaked at a fiber dosage of 0.5%, registering 26.72 MPa, 27.49 MPa, and 27.67 MPa, respectively. The split tensile strength of all three fiber-reinforced soil cement variants reached their maximum at a 1.5% fiber dosage, recording 2.29 MPa, 2.34 MPa, and 2.27 MPa, respectively. The predominant pore sizes in all three fiber-reinforced soil cement specimens ranged from 10 nm to 100 nm. Furthermore, analysis from the perspective of energy evolution revealed that a moderate fiber dosage can minimize energy loss. In this paper, the workability, mechanical, ion leaching, and drying shrinkage properties of alkali-activated concrete with recycled coarse and fine aggregates were studied, and the pore structure and micro-morphology of different alkali-activated recycled aggregate concretes (AARACs) were characterized by using the mercury intrusion method and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The experimental results showed that with the increase in the replacement rate of the recycled fine aggregate (RFA), the flowability showed a decreasing trend. Adding a certain amount of RFA improves the mechanical properties of the AARAC. The compressive strength at a curing age of 28 days was 65.3 MPa with 70 wt% RFA replacement. When the replacement rate of the RFA was 100 wt%, the maximum splitting tensile strength (4.5 MPa) was obtained at a curing age of 7 days. However, the addition of the RFA had little effect on the flexural strength of the AARAC. As an extension of the curing age, the splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, tension-to-compression ratio, and flexure-to-compression ratio all showed an increasing trend at first and then a decreasing trend. At a curing age of 7 days, the tension-to-compression ratio and flexure-to-compression ratio were both high (except for those of R100), indicating that the ductility and toughness of the specimen were improved. The addition of the RFA increased the drying shrinkage of the AARAC. At a curing age of 120 days, compared to the specimen without the RFA, the drying shrinkage rate of the specimen with the addition of 70 wt% RFA increased by 34.15%. As the curing age increased, the microstructure of the reaction products became denser, but the proportion of large-diameter pores increased. This study evaluated the application of RFA in AARAC. In this paper, two flower-like magnesium silicate nanomaterials were prepared. These and another two commercial magnesium silicate materials were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, the N2 adsorption–desorption method, and other methods. The structure–activity relationship between the adsorption performance of these four magnesium silicate materials and their specific surface area, pore size distribution, and pore structure was compared. The results showed that the 3-FMS modified by sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) had the largest specific surface area and pore size, the best adsorption performance, and the largest experimental equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe,exp) for Co2+, reaching 190.01 mg/g, and Cr3+, reaching 208.89 mg/g. The adsorption behavior of the four materials for Co2+ and Cr3+ both fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model, indicating that chemical monolayer uniform adsorption was the dominant adsorption process. Among them, the theoretical adsorption capacity (qm) of 3-FMS was the highest, reaching 207.62 mg/g for Co2+ and 230.85 mg/g for Cr3+. Through further research, it was found that the four materials mainly removed Co2+ and Cr3+ through electrostatic adsorption, surface metal ions (Mg2+), and acidic groups (-OH and -SO3H) exchanging with ions in solution. This paper focuses on the preparation and evaluation of a novel humidity-control material, vermiculite/(sodium polyacrylate(AA)–acrylamide(AM)), using inverse suspension polymerization. Acrylic acid and acrylamide were introduced into the interlayer of modified vermiculite during the polymerization process, leading to the formation of a strong association with the modified vermiculite. The addition of vermiculite increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the composites. To investigate the moisture absorption and desorption properties of the composites, an orthogonal experiment and single-factor experiment were conducted to analyze the impacts of vermiculite content, neutralization degree, and the mass ratio of AA to AM. According to the control experiment, the addition of vermiculite was found to enhance the pore structure and surface morphology of the composite material, surpassing both vermiculite and PAA-AM copolymer in terms of humidity control capacity and rate. The optimal preparation conditions were identified as follows: vermiculite mass fraction of 4 wt%, a neutralization degree of 90%, and mAA:mAM = 4:1. The moisture absorption rate and moisture release rate of the composite material prepared under these conditions are 1.285 g/g and 1.172 g/g. The humidity control process of the composite material is governed by pseudo second-order kinetics, which encompasses the complete adsorption process. These results indicate that the vermiculite/PAA-AM composite humidity control material has excellent humidity control performance and is a simple and efficient humidity control method. To study the effects of basalt fibers (BFs), calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs), and modified calcium sulfate whiskers (MCSWs) on the compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete, this paper utilizes Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) to measure the microstructure of concrete and calculate the fractal dimension of pore surface area. The results indicate that both CSWs and BFs can increase the compressive strength of concrete. CSWs can enhance the dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete, while the effect of BFs on the dynamic modulus of elasticity is not significant. The improvement in compressive strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity provided by MCSWs is significantly greater than that provided by CSWs. Both CSWs and BFs can effectively improve the pore structure of concrete and have a significant impact on the surface fractal dimension. CSWs inhibit the formation of ink-bottle pores, while BFs increase the number of ink-bottle pores. Due to the ink-bottle pore effect, the fractal dimension of the capillary pore surface is generally greater than three, lacking fractal characteristics. New composites produced with recycled waste are needed to manufacture more sustainable construction materials. This paper aimed to analyze the hygrothermal and mechanical performance of plasterboard with a polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) content, incorporating recycled PET microplastic waste and varying factors such as PMHS dose, homogenization time, and drying temperature after setting. A cube-centered experimental design matrix was performed. The crystal morphology, porosity, fluidity, water absorption, flexural strength, and thermal conductivity of plasterboards were measured. The results showed that incorporating recycled PET microplastics does not produce a significant difference in the absorption and flexural strength of plasterboards. Porous asphalt pavements are widely used in rainy and wet areas for their skid resistance, noise reduction, runoff minimization and environmental sustainability. Long-term moisture vapor erosion and the destabilization of large pore structures can easily result in pavement problems such as fragmentation, spalling, cracking, and excessive permanent deformation. To this end, four different preventive maintenance materials, including the rejuvenation (RJ), cohesion reinforcement (CEM), polymerization reaction, and emulsified asphalt (EA) types, were selected in this paper to improve the high-viscosity porous asphalt pavement. The effects of the different preventive maintenance materials on the temperature sensitivity, rheological properties and fatigue performance of high-viscosity modified asphalt were evaluated through temperature sweep, frequency sweep, multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The results showed that the four preventive maintenance materials exhibit different enhancement mechanisms and effects. RJ improves the fatigue properties, deformation resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance of aged asphalt by adding elastomeric components; CEM materials are more conducive to increasing the low-temperature crack resistance of aged asphalt; while GL1 and EA improve the viscoelastic behavior of aged asphalt, but the effect of the dosing ratio needs to be considered. Bulk density and porosity have great influence on the technical performance of an emulsified asphalt mixture, so in order to enhance the strength of the asphalt mixture, bulk density should be improved and porosity should be reduced. Considering the forming process of the emulsified asphalt mixture, the decrease in porosity can ensure the state of the mixture. In order to reduce the porosity of the emulsified asphalt mixture, an innovative forming process is proposed to improve the performance of the emulsified asphalt mixture, and its strength formation mechanism is explored in this paper. Three groups of emulsified asphalt mixtures (ARC-8 + SBR, SMA-5 + EVA, SMA-5 + SBR) were prepared by a conventional mixing process and novel mixing process. Marshall test of the emulsified asphalt mixture, CT scanning test of the emulsified asphalt mixture, workability test and analysis were manufactured and tested. The results show that, compared with conventional methods, the innovative forming method can increase the bulk density of the mixture and reduce the porosity, and thus improve its technical performance. The reason is that most of the water in the mixture of the innovative forming method sticks to the outer surface of the fine aggregate, and the water is more easily discharged. Secondly, the fine aggregate of the innovative forming method is directly mixed with the emulsion, and the volume is smaller. Chloride ion corrosion has been considered to be one of the main reasons for durability deterioration of reinforced concrete structures in marine or chlorine-containing deicing salt environments. This paper studies the relationship between the amount of fly ash and the durability of concrete, especially the resistance to chloride ion erosion. The heat trend map of total chloride ion factor correlation displayed that the ranking of factor correlations was as follows: sampling depth > cement dosage > fly ash dosage. In order to verify the effect of fly ash dosage on chloride ion resistance, three different machine learning algorithms (RF, GBR, DT) are employed to predict the total chloride content of fly ash proportioned concrete with varying admixture ratios, which are evaluated based on R2, MSE, RMSE, and MAE. The results predicted by the RF model show that the threshold of fly ash admixture in chlorinated salt environments is 30–40%. Replacing part of cement with fly ash in the mixture of concrete below this threshold of fly ash, it could change the phase structure and pore structure, which could improve the permeability of fly ash concrete and reduce the content of free chloride ions in the system. Machine learning modeling using sample data can accurately predict concrete properties, which effectively reduce engineering tests. Searching for alternative material options to reduce the extraction of natural resources is essential for promoting a more sustainable world. This is especially relevant in construction and infrastructure projects, where significant volumes of materials are used. This paper aims to introduce three alternative materials, crushed ground glass (GG), recycled gypsum (GY) and crushed lime waste (CLW), byproducts of construction industry geomaterials, to enhance the mechanical properties of clay soil in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. These materials show promise as cementitious and frictional agents, combined with soil and cement. Rigorous testing, including tests on unconfined compressive strength (qu) and initial stiffness (Go) and with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals a correlation between strength, stiffness and the novel porosity/binder index (η/Civ) and provides mixed design equations for the novel geomaterials. Micro-level analyses show the formation of hydrated calcium silicates and complex interactions among the waste materials, cement and clay. In this paper, the strength development of a pure steel slag (SS) system with various concentrations of N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis-(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine (THEED) was investigated. The hydration kinetics, pore structure and microstructure of SS pastes with and without THEED were characterized to underscore the working mechanism of THEED. Results show that THEED additions significantly increase the 3, 7 and 28 days compressive strength of hardened SS pastes. The enhancement effect increases with the dosage of THEED. At a concentration of 2000 ppm, THEED increased the compressive strength by 733%, 665%, and 545% at 3, 7 and 28 days, respectively. It is confirmed that THEED additions improve the hydration degree of SS by accelerating hydration of the aluminum phase (C3A, PDF-38-1429; C12A7, PDF-48-1882) and C2F,(PDF 38-0408) to generate Mc (PDF-41-0219) and Pa (PDF-30-0222) in the presence of CaCO3. Also, the hydration degree of silicates is increased by THEED. In this way, THEED additions refine the pore structure of hardened SS paste by increasing the pore volume with a diameter below 300 nm to achieve enhancement. Cement production in the world market is steadily increasing. In 2000, it was 1600 million tons, while as of 2013, the annual amount exceeded 4000 million tons. The burning of cement clinker is associated with the generation of waste. It is estimated that the amount of cement kiln dust (CKD), during combustion, reaches about 15–20%, which means 700 million tons per year. However, not all types of by-products are reusable due to high alkali, sulfate, and chloride contents, which can adversely affect the environment. One environmentally friendly solution may be to use CKD in the production of high-performance concrete (HPC), as a substitute for some of the cement. This paper presents a study of the short- and long-term physical and mechanical properties of HPC with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% CKD additives. The experiments determined density, water absorption, porosity, splitting tensile strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and evaluated the microstructure of the concrete. The addition of CKD up to 10% caused an increase in the 28- and 730-day compressive strengths, while the values decreased slightly when CKD concentration increased to 20%. Splitting tensile strength decreased proportionally with 5–20% amounts of CKD regardless of HPC age. Porosity, absorbability, and ultrasonic pulse velocity decreased with increasing cement dust, while the bulk density increased for HPC with CKD. Microstructure analyses showed a decrease in the content of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), acceleration of setting, and formation of wider microcracks with an increase in CKD. From the results, it was shown that a 15% percentage addition of CKD can effectively replace cement in the production of HPC and contribute to reducing the amount of by-product from the burning of cement clinker. The deterioration of anhydrite rock exposed to a freeze–thaw environment is a complex process. Therefore, this paper systematically investigated the physical and mechanical evolutions of freeze–thawed anhydrite rock through a series of multi-scale laboratory tests. Meanwhile, the correlation between pore structure and macroscopic mechanical parameters was discussed, and the deterioration mechanisms of anhydrite rock under freeze–thaw cycles were revealed. The results show that with the increase in freeze–thaw processes, the mechanical strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, proportions of micropores (r ≤ 0.1 μm), and PT-Ipore throat (0–0.1 μm) decrease exponentially. In comparison, the mass variation, proportions of mesopores (0.1 μm < r < 1 μm), macropores (r ≥ 1 μm), and PT-II pore throat (0.1–4 μm) increase exponentially. After 120 cycles, the mean porosity increases by 66.27%, and there is a significant honeycomb and pitted surface phenomenon. Meanwhile, as the freeze–thaw cycles increase, the frost resistance coefficient decreases, while the damage variable increases. The correlation analysis between pore structure and macroscopic mechanical parameters shows that macropores play the most significant role in the mechanical characteristic deterioration of freeze–thawed anhydrite rock. Finally, it is revealed that the water–rock expansion and water dissolution effects play a crucial role in the multi-scale damage of anhydrite rock under the freeze–thaw environment. Using limestone powder (LP), the by-product of manufactured sand, to replace part of fly ash (FA) or manufactured sand could not only turn waste into treasure and decrease the price of concrete, but could also enhance the performance of concrete and reduce environmental pollution. However, the impact of various LP incorporation methods on the performance of mass concrete was inconsistent. In this paper, the effects of LP on the workability, compressive strength, constrained expansion rate, hydration temperature and impermeability of mass concrete were studied by replacing FA or manufactured sand alone and replacing FA and manufactured sand simultaneously. The results showed that the impact of LP on the performance of mass concrete was equal when it replaced FA alone and FA and manufactured sand at the same time. When the replacement amount was 20%, the workability, expansibility and early strength of concrete were improved, but the later strength and impermeability were slightly reduced. The workability, compressive strength, expansibility and impermeability of mass concrete were improved when manufactured sand was replaced alone, and the optimal dosage was 10%. The LP, moreover, reduced the hydration temperature peak of concrete in three kinds of mixing methods, but the temperature peak appeared earlier. At lower dosages, LP optimized pore structure and promoted the early hydration of cement through filler effects and nucleation effects. When LP replaced manufactured sand, the microstructure of concrete was more dense, so the replacement of manufactured sand had a better effect on the improvement of concrete properties. The biodegradation of building materials refers to the problem of loss of performance due to biological agents, mainly dry rot fungi, moulds (filamentous fungi), bacteria and insects. Biocorrosion not only leads to the damage and deterioration of building materials, but can also pose a direct threat to human health. Inorganic building materials are a difficult substrate for microorganisms because they need food sources for their metabolism. However, they become colonised by microorganisms. In this paper, the effect of mould fungi on the moisture content and structure of CEM I and CEM I cement–polymer mortars with a 5% polysiloxane latex admixture was analysed. The analysis was carried out after 15 months of exposure to the biological environment. It was found that the cementitious materials were susceptible to the corrosive environment in the form of the filamentous fungi Penicillium chrysogenum and Cladosporium herbarum. It was also found that, after 15 months of exposure to mould fungi, CEM I cementitious materials without admixtures were slightly less susceptible to mould fungi than CEM I with the addition of a 5% polysiloxane admixture. Recycling of multi-source solid waste is of great benefit to energy conservation and environmental governance. In this paper, a new type of environmental protection concrete for railway accessory facilities was prepared from silicon-manganese slag, steel slag, fly ash and recycled macadam. Seven kinds of concrete with different mix proportions were designed. Through unconfined compressive strength, splitting, drying shrinkage and temperature shrinkage tests, the multivariate changing trends of steel slag content, cement dosage and age on the anti-interference ability of concrete were investigated. The main mechanisms of the development of mechanical and dry shrinkage properties were revealed by the hydration process of 3SR-60. The results show that 3SR-60 had better mechanical strength under the same cement dosage. The temperature shrinkage strain decreased and then increased with the rise of the proportion of waste residue, increased with the addition of cement dosage and decreased first and then increased with the descent in the temperature. The temperature shrinkage coefficient reached the lowest value at 0–10 °C. The drying shrinkage coefficient decreases with the increase in the proportion of waste residue and increases with the increase in cement dosage. The dry shrinkage strain increased rapidly during the first 8 days and became almost constant after 30 days. Cementation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) developed continuously and filled the internal pores of the structure, interlocking and cementing with each other, which made the microstructure develop from a three-dimensional network to a dense complex, and the macro dimension was reflected in the enhancement of the power to resist external interference. This paper presents and investigates the properties of concrete in which a portion of the cement is substituted with non-sintered Hwangto (NSH), a readily available building material in Asia. Given the inactive nature of NSH, this study aimed to determine the optimal cement replacement ratio and quantitative strength of the material. The unit weight, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and stress–strain of the NSH concrete (NSHC) were evaluated. Additionally, we developed a predictive model for determining compressive strength based on the regression analysis of compressive strength and UPV. The water-to-binder ratio was set to 0.41, 0.33, and 0.28, and the NSH replacement rates in the cement were set to 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% for evaluating various strength ranges. The mechanical property measurements indicated reductions of 5.35% in unit weight, 35.62% in compressive strength, and 6.34% in UPV as the NSH was replaced. Notably, the smallest deviation from plain concrete was observed at a replacement rate of 15%. The scanning electron microscopy analysis results showed that the plain concrete exhibited a crystalloid structure; however, as the NSH replacement rate increased, the amorphous structure and pores increased while unreacted NSH particles were also observed. The X-ray diffraction analysis results demonstrate that the peak intensities for kaolinite and mullite increased as the NSH replacement rate increased, while those of C–S–H gel and CaO showed low peak intensities. Furthermore, the regression analysis concluded that an exponential function was suitable. Consequently, a compressive strength prediction model was developed, and in the error test, the NSHC model demonstrated an average error of <10%, with fewer errors at the lower compressive strength boundaries. Directed energy deposition (DED) is gaining widespread acceptance in various industrial applications since its unique manufacturing features allow the DED to print metallic parts with very complex geometries. However, DED inevitably generates a lot of internal pores which can limit the widespread applications of the DED technique. The current studies on DED porosity are mostly focused on analyzing pores' bulk-scale influences on mechanical properties and performances. Since DED pores have a micro-scale existence, with dimensions ranging from a few microns to several hundred microns, it is fundamental to explore the pores' influences on the micro-scale, including local mechanical properties, residual stress, and grains near pores. However, this important research direction has been neglected. The objective of this work is to fill the above gap in DED porosity research and acquire a fundamental understanding of the role of porosity on a microscopic scale. The authors used nanoindentation approaches to investigate internal pores' effects on mechanical properties and residual stress in local regions surrounding the pores. In addition, the grains near pores were observed through EBSD, and simulated with the Kinetic Monte Carlo model. The research findings can be provided for DED researchers and industrial practitioners as technical guidance. Most importantly, the research results can work as a good reference for tracing the source of bulk-scale mechanical performances and properties of DED parts with internal pores. The purpose of this research is to investigate the utilization potential of recycled powder made from spent coffee grounds (SCGs) and aerated concrete blocks (ACBs) in green-growing concrete. The green-growing concrete is prepared using ACB powder and SCG ash as raw materials instead of 5%, 15%, and 25% and 5%, 10%, and 15% cement, respectively. Then, the two raw materials are compounded with the optimal content. The compressive strength and alkalinity of green-growing concrete at 7d and 28d and the frost resistance after 25 freeze–thaw cycles at 28d are studied. The results showed that the optimum content of ACB powder and SCG ash was 5%. Replacing 5% cement with recycled powder could improve the strength of concrete. The alkalinity of concrete containing ACB powder gradually increased, while the alkalinity of concrete containing SCG ash gradually decreased. The alkalinity of ACB-SCG powder was lower than that of ACB powder but slightly higher than that of SCG ash. The frost resistance of concrete containing ACB powder decreased gradually, and the frost resistance of concrete containing SCG ash increased first and then decreased greatly. Lotus-type porous metals, characterized by low densities, large surface areas, and directional properties, are contemporarily utilized as lightweight, catalytic, and energy-damping materials; heat sinks; etc. In this study, the effects of dimensionless working parameters on the morphology of lotus-type pores in metals during unidirectional solidification were extensively investigated via general algebraic expressions. The independent dimensionless parameters include metallurgical, transport, and geometrical parameters such as Sieverts' law constant, a partition coefficient, the solidification rate, a mass transfer coefficient, the imposed mole fraction of a solute gas, the total pressure at the top free surface, hydrostatic pressure, a solute transport parameter, inter-pore spacing, and initial contact angle. This model accounts for transient gas pressure in the pore, affected by the solute transfer, gas, capillary, and hydrostatic pressures, and Sieverts' laws at the bubble cap and top free surface. Solute transport across the cap accounts for solute convection at the cap and the amount of solute rejected by the solidification front into the pore. The shape of lotus-type pores can be described using a proposed fifth-degree polynomial approximation, which captures the major portions between the initial contact angle and the maximum radius at a contact angle of 90 degrees, obtained by conserving the total solute content in the system. The proposed polynomial approximation, along with its working parameters, offers profound insights into the formation and shape of lotus-type pores in metals. It systematically provides deep insights into mechanisms that may not be easily revealed with experimental studies. Porous copper (Cu), with varying porosities, has been made using carbamide as a space holder through the powder metallurgy route. Two shapes of carbamide particles were used, (i) needlelike and (ii) spherical, in order to investigate the effect of the space holder shape on the pore structure and mechanical properties of porous Cu. The compressive deformation behavior of porous Cu was studied under a compression test. The pores' structural characteristics and mechanical properties of the porous Cu varied significantly with the shape of the space holder. Although the effect of the space holder shape on the porosity was not regular, the effect on the mechanical properties was regular. The stress increased monotonically with the increase in the strain, and strain hardening occurred at the plastic yield stage. The elastic modulus and yield strength followed the power law, with the relative density irrespective of the space holder shape. The empirical constants associated with different empirically developed power law relations were different, according to the shape of space holder. A quantitative relationship between the elastic modulus and yield strength and the spacer content was obtained to control the mechanical properties of the present porous Cu or other porous metals and metal foams using the well-known space holder method. In this work, the preparation of titanium sponge by magnesium thermal method is regarded as the liquid-phase sintering process of titanium, and powder-metallurgy sintering technology is utilized to simulate the aggregation–growth and densification behavior of titanium particles in a high-temperature liquid medium (the molten Mg-MgCl2 system). It was found that compared with MgCl2, Mg has better high-temperature wettability and reduction effect, which promotes titanium particles to form a sponge titanium skeleton at lower temperature. The aggregation degree of titanium particles and the densification degree of a sponge titanium skeleton can be improved by increasing the temperature and the relative content of Mg in the melting medium. The kinetics study shows that with the increase in temperature, the porosity of the titanium particle aggregates and the sponge titanium skeleton decreases, and their density growth rate increases. With the extension of time, the aggregation degree of titanium particles and the densification degree of sponge titanium gradually increase. The aggregation of graphene oxide (GO) during the hydration process limits its wide application. Polymer superplasticizers have been used to improve the dispersion state of GO due to their adsorption and site-blocking effects, though the formation of a large amount of foam during the mixing process weakens the mechanical properties of cement. A highly dispersed amphoteric polycarboxylate superplasticizer-stabilized graphene oxide (APC/GO) toughening agent was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly. Results demonstrate that the APC/GO composite dispersed well in a cement pore solution due to the steric effect offered by the APC. Additionally, the well-dispersed GO acted as an antifoaming agent in the cement since GO nanosheets can be absorbed at the air–liquid interface of APC foam via electrostatic interactions and eliminate the air-entraining effect. The well-dispersed APC/GO sheets promoted cement hydration and further refined its pore structure owing to the nucleation effect. The flexural and compressive strength of the cement containing the APC/GO composite were enhanced by 21.51% and 18.58%, respectively, after a 7-day hydration process compared with a blank sample. With additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), components with complex shapes or with functional properties can be produced, with advantages in the areas of resource conservation, lightweight construction, and load-optimized production. However, proving component quality is a challenge because it is not possible to produce 100% defect-free components. In addition to this, statistically determined fluctuations in the wire quality, gas flow, and their interaction with process parameters result in a quality of the components that is not 100% reproducible. Complex testing procedures are therefore required to demonstrate the quality of the components, which are not cost-effective and lead to less efficiency. As part of the project "3DPrintFEM", a sound emission analysis is used to evaluate the quality of AM components. Within the scope of the project, an approach was being developed to determine the quality of an AM part dependent not necessarily on its geometry. Samples were produced from WAAM, which were later cut and milled to precision. To determine the frequencies, the samples were put through a resonant frequency test (RFM). The unwanted modes were then removed from the spectrum produced by the experiments by comparing it with FEM simulations. Later, defects were introduced in experimental samples in compliance with the ISO 5817 guidelines. In order to create a database of frequencies related to the degree of the sample defect, they were subjected to RFM. The database was further augmented through frequencies from simulations performed on samples with similar geometries, and, hence, a training set was generated for an algorithm. A machine-learning algorithm based on regression modelling was trained based on the database to sort samples according to the degree of flaws in them. The algorithm's detectability was evaluated using samples that had a known level of flaws which forms the test dataset. Based on the outcome, the algorithm will be integrated into an equipment developed in-house to monitor the quality of samples produced, thereby having an in-house quality assessment routine. Over the last 20 years, flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD gypsum) has become a valuable and widely used substitute for a natural raw material to produce plasters, mortars, and many other construction products. The essential advantages of FGD gypsum include its high purity and stability, which allow for better technical parameters compared to natural gypsum, and, until recently, its low price and easy availability. This FGD gypsum is obtained in the process of desulfurization of flue gases and waste gases in power plants, thermal power plants, refineries, etc., using fossil fuels such as coal or oil. The gradual reduction in energy production from fossil raw materials implemented by European Union countries until its complete cessation in 2049 in favor of renewable energy sources significantly affects the availability of synthetic gypsum, and forces producers of mortars and other construction products to look for new solutions. The gypsum content in commonly used light plaster mortars is usually from 50 to 60% by mass. This work presents the results of tests on mortars wherein the authors reduced the amount of gypsum to 30%, and, to meet the strength requirements specified in the EN 13279-1:2008 standard, added Portland cement in the amount of 6–12% by mass. Such a significant reduction in the content of synthetic gypsum will reduce this raw material's consumption, thus extending its availability and developing other solutions. The study presented the test results on strength, density, porosity, pore size distribution, and changes in the microstructure of mortars during up to 180 days of maturation in conditions of increased relative humidity. The results show that decreased porosity and increased mechanical strength occur due to the densification of the microstructure caused by the formation of hydration products, such as C-S-H, ettringite, and thaumasite. Porous suspended particles are hazardous to human health due to their strong absorption capacity for toxic substances. A fast, accurate, in situ and high-throughput method to characterize the microporous structure of porous particles has extensive application value. The polarization changes during the light scattering of aerosol particles are highly sensitive to their microstructural properties, such as pore size and porosity. In this study, we propose an overlapping sphere model based on the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) to calculate the polarization scattering characteristics of porous particles. By combining scattering calculations with multi-dimensional polarization indexes measured by a multi-angle polarized scattering vector detection system, we achieve the identification and classification of pore-type components in suspended particles. The maximum deviation based on multiple indexes is less than 0.16% for the proportion analysis of mixed particles. Simultaneously, we develop a quantitative inversion algorithm on pore size and porosity. The inversion results of the three porous polymer particles support the validity and feasibility of our method, where the inversion error of partial particles is less than 4% for pore size and less than 6% for porosity. It is unknown whether Ferronickel slag (FNS)-ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based pervious concrete (FOPC) is feasible. To this end, a feasibility study was conducted on FOPC. Firstly, a detailed microscopic examination of the FNS powder was conducted, encompassing analyses of its particle size distribution, SEM, EDS, and chemical composition. These analyses aimed to establish the suitability of a composite of FNS and OPC as a composite cementitious material. Subsequent experimentation focused on evaluating the compressive strength of the composite paste material with varying mixed proportions, revealing a slight reduction in strength as the FNS substitution rate increased. Furthermore, the study designed eighteen different mix proportions of FOPC to investigate the key physical properties, including porosity, density, compressive strength, and the coefficient of permeability. Findings indicated that increases in the cementitious material proportion correlate with enhanced concrete strength, where the ratio of cementitious to aggregate increased by 6.7% and 16.5%, and the strength of FOPC increased by 10–13% and 30–50%, respectively. Conversely, a rise in the FNS substitution rate led to a reduction in compressive strength across different mix ratios. Additionally, the ratio of paste material to aggregate was found to significantly influence the permeability coefficient. These comprehensive performance evaluations suggest that incorporating FNS into OPC for pervious concrete applications is a feasible approach, offering valuable insights for the promotion of waste reuse and the advancement of energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts. The optimization of structure and thermal properties in 3D-printed insulation materials remains an underexplored area in the literature. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of 3D printing on the thermal properties of manufactured cellular composites. The materials studied were closed-cell foams with a complex cell structure based on the Voronoi cell model, manufactured using incremental technology (3D printing). The influence of the cellular structure of the composite, the type of material used, and the number of layers in the composite structure on its thermal properties, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal resistance, and coefficient of heat transfer, was analyzed. Samples of different types of thermosetting resins, characterized by different values of emissivity coefficient, were analyzed. It was shown that both the type of material, the number of layers of the composite, and the number of pores in its structure significantly affect its thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity and permeability depended on the number of layers and decreased up to 30% as the number of layers increased from one to four, while thermal resistance increased to 35%. The results indicate that material structure is key in regulating thermal conduction. Controlling the number of cells in a given volume of composite (and thus the size of the air cells) and the number of layers in the composite can be an effective tool in designing materials with high insulation performance. Among the prototype composites produced, the best thermal performance was that of the metalized four-layer cellular composites (λ = 0.035 ± 0.002 W/m·K, Rc = 1.15 ± 0.02 K·m2/W, U = 0.76 ± 0.01 W/m2·K). Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF) are frequently utilized in gel materials to produce environmentally sustainable concrete. The blend of the two components contributes to an enhancement in the pore structure, which, in turn, increases the mechanical strength of the material and the compactness of the pore structure and decreases the permeability, thereby improving the durability of the concrete. In this study, the pore structures of GGBS and SF blends are assessed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) tests. These methodologies provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effect of GGBS and SF on the pore structure of cementitious materials. Results showed that the addition of SF and GGBS reduces the amount of micro-capillary pores (10 < d < 100 nm) and the total pore volume. The results indicate that the transport properties are related to the pore structure. The incorporation of SF reduced the permeability of the concrete by an order of magnitude. The pore distribution and pore composition had a significant effect on the gas permeability. The low mechanical strength of a low-calcium fly ash (FA)–red mud (RM) geopolymer severely limits its application. Steel slag (SS) and Ca(OH)2 can provide calcium and alkali for the hydration process of a low-calcium FA-based geopolymer. In this study, SS was used to replace part of the RM, and Ca(OH)2 was introduced. The effects of SS and Ca(OH)2 on the properties of the FA-RM geopolymer were investigated. The experimental results show that SS promoted the matrix to generate more C(N)-A-S-H and C-S-H gels and optimized the pore structure, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the FA-based geopolymer. The addition of 4 wt.% Ca(OH)2 increased the hydration products of the FA-based geopolymer, the microstructure was denser, and the mechanical properties were significantly improved. The 28 d compressive strength of the FA-based ternary composite geopolymer prepared by replacing part of the RM with SS and adding Ca(OH)2 reached 30.6 MPa, which provided an experimental basis for the resource utilization of various bulk solid wastes. Porous structures can reduce the elastic modulus of implants, decrease stress shielding, and avoid bone loss in the alveolar bone and aseptic loosening of implants; however, there is a mismatch between yield strength and elastic modulus as well as biocompatibility problems. This study aimed to investigate the parametric design method of porous root-shaped implants to reduce the stress-shielding effect and improve the biocompatibility and long-term stability and effectiveness of the implants. Firstly, the porous structure part was parametrically designed, and the control of porosity gradient distribution was achieved by using the fitting relationship between porosity and bias and the position function of bias. In addition, the optimal distribution law of the porous structure was explored through mechanical and hydrodynamic analyses of the porous structure. Finally, the biomechanical properties were verified using simulated implant–bone tissue interface micromotion values. The results showed that the effects of marginal and central porosity on yield strength were linear, with the elastic modulus decreasing from 18.9 to 10.1 GPa in the range of 20–35% for marginal porosity, with a maximum decrease of 46.6%; the changes in the central porosity had a more consistent effect on the elastic modulus, ranging from 18.9 to 15.3 GPa in the range of 50–90%, with a maximum downward shift of 19%. The central porosity had a more significant effect on permeability, ranging from 1.9 × 10−7 m2 to 4.9 × 10−7 m2 with a maximum enhancement of 61.2%. The analysis showed that the edge structure had a more substantial impact on the mechanical properties. The central structure could increase the permeability more effectively. Hence, the porous structure with reasonable gradient distribution had a better match between mechanical properties and flow properties. The effect of defects and microstructure on the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V welds produced by tungsten inert gas welding; plasma arc welding; electron beam welding; and laser beam welding was studied in the present work. The mechanical properties of different weld types were evaluated with respect to micro hardness; yield strength; ultimate tensile strength; ductility; and fatigue at room temperature and at elevated temperatures (200 °C and 250 °C). Metallographic investigation was carried out to characterize the microstructures of different weld types, and fractographic investigation was conducted to relate the effect of defects on fatigue performance. Electron and laser beam welding produced welds with finer microstructure, higher tensile ductility, and better fatigue performance than tungsten inert gas welding and plasma arc welding. An Al-Si matrix foam sandwich (AFS) with 6063 Al alloy cover sheets was fabricated by hot rolling combined with melt foaming. A foamable AlSiMg1/SiCp matrix precursor was prepared by the melting route. Hot rolling at 480 °C was carried out to obtain a mechanical bonding interface between the cover sheet and the foamable precursor. Meanwhile, the pore structure of the AFS was deeply affected by the foaming temperature and foaming time during the foaming process. Different pore growth mechanics of the crack-like pore disappearance mechanism (CDM) and pore active expansion mechanism (AEM) were concluded based on the pressure difference in pores inside and outside. Three bending tests were applied to three types of AFSs with different pore structures to evaluate the relation between pore structures and AFS mechanical properties. The bending property of the AFS with fewer layers of pores is like that of a dense material. The bending property of the AFS with a pore size in the range of 0~1 mm presents a typical sandwich shear failure mode. The AFS with a uniform pore structure, in which the shapes of the pores are predominately polygons and the pore diameter is concentrated in the range of 0.5~3 mm, processes a good energy absorption capacity, and the bending stress–strain curve fluctuates greatly after the first stress drop. Coating efficiency and quality can be significantly improved by carefully optimizing the coating parameters. Particularly in the flame spray method, the oxygen/fuel ratio, which is classified as oxidizing flame stoichiometry (excess oxygen) and reduces flame stoichiometry (excess acetylene), and spray distance are the most critical factors, as they correlate significantly with coating porosity and corrosion performance. Hence, understanding the effects of these parameters is essential to further minimize the porosity, improving the corrosion performance of thermally sprayed coatings. In this work, a NiWCrBSi alloy coating was deposited via the oxyacetylene flame spray/Flexicord-wire (FS/FC) method. The effect of the flame oxygen/fuel ratio and spray distance on the microstructure properties and corrosion behavior of the coatings was investigated. Afterwards, the microstructure, phases' compositions, spray distance, and corrosion performance were studied. The equivalent circuit model was proposed, and the corrosion mechanism was discussed. The obtained results highlight that the oxygen-to-fuel ratio is a promising solution for the further application of flame spray/Flexicord-wire (FS/FC) cermet coatings in hostile environments. The current investigation presents porous ceramic materials prepared with cenospheres (CS) by using spark plasma sintering. The impact of sintering temperature, mould diameter (20, 30 and 50 mm) and cenosphere size on the properties of the sintered material was investigated. Shrinkage of the samples during sintering started at 900 °C. Total sample shrinkage during sintering increases with increasing temperature and decreases with increasing mould size; increasing sample sintering temperature increases the apparent density of all sample series CS 63–150 µm in a 20 mm mould from 0.97 to 2.3 g·cm−3 at 1050–1300 °C; in a 30 mm mould, 0.81–1.87 g·cm−3 at 1050–1200 °C; in 50 mm mould, 0.54–0.75 g·cm−3 at 1050–1150 °C; while CS 150–250 µm in a 20 mm mould is 0.93–1.96 g·cm−3 at 1050–1200 °C. Total porosity decreases from 61.5% to 3.9% by increasing sintering temperature from 1050 to 1250 °C, while open porosity reduces at lower temperatures, with closed porosity being highest in samples sintered at 1150 °C. When the sintering temperature increases from 1050 to 1300 °C, the compressive strength of the CS 63–150 samples produced in a 20 mm mould increases from 11 MPa to 312 MPa. These results correlate with the Rice model, which describes an exponential dependence of compressive strength on material porosity and fully dense material compressive strength. The study of alkali-activated slag (AAS) is motivated by the need for more sustainable alternatives to Portland cement (PC) within the construction industry. Specifically, AAS offers good mechanical and chemical properties. However, the influence of the activator on its pore structure and hydraulic conductivity remains unclear. Both pore structure and hydraulic conductivity are key parameters in understanding the drying process and could potentially explain the high drying shrinkage observed so far. The present study aims to investigate the pore size distribution and hydraulic conductivity of six distinct AAS/sodium hydroxide mortar compositions, with a particular emphasis on the effect of varying the activator's molarity and the solution-to-binder ratio (s/b). This research uses the mass variation in different relative humidity (RH) conditions from experimental tests to model the pore surface area, the pore size distribution, and the hydraulic conductivity. From the results, it emerges that increasing the molarity from 0.5 to 8 M reduces the open porosity and refines the pore structure, while increasing the s/b from 0.5 to 0.8 increases the open porosity while refining the pore structure. In addition, high molarity compositions are not suitable for testing in high RH and natural carbonation conditions due to the occurrence of deliquescence. Moreover, the main drying mechanism in AAS is water vapour transport even at high relative humidity, contrary to what was observed in the literature for PC. Finally, the hydraulic conductivity of alkali-activated slag presents a minimum of around 85% RH against the 60–70% RH for PC, causing AAS to dry faster when the relative humidity decreases from 85 to 50%. Silicalite-1 zeolites are widely applied in gas adsorption, catalysis, and separation due to their excellent hydrothermal stability and unique pore structure. However, traditional preparation methods have inherent drawbacks such as high pollution, high cost, etc. Therefore, this work proposed a green and efficient route for preparing Silicalite-1 zeolite by adding NH4F (F/Si = 0.1) and seeds (10 wt%) in a much shorter time (8 h) in a low-template system (TPA+/Si = 0.007). It was found that NH4F is beneficial for inhibiting the formation of SiO2. The S-1 seeds could drastically induce the formation of the zeolite skeleton structure. Noteworthy, the morphology of zeolites was determined by the relative content of NH4F and seeds. The crystal morphology is determined by the higher content of the two substances; however, when the content is similar, the crystal morphology is determined by NH4F. The results showed that simultaneous control of NH4F and seeds can suppress SiO2 formation, can improve the relative crystallinity of products, and can be precisely regulated via the synergistic effect of both in zeolite morphology. This work not only provides new ideas for regulating the morphology of silicate-1 crystals but also offers a new path for industrial large-scale production of low-cost and efficient zeolites. The objective of this study is to formulate vegetated light porous concrete (VLPC) through the utilization of various cementing materials, the design of porosity, and the incorporation of mineral additives. Subsequently, the study aims to assess and analyze key properties, including the bulk density, permeability coefficient, mechanical characteristics, and alkalinity. The findings indicate a linear decrease in the volume weight of VLPC as the designed porosity increases. While higher design porosity elevates the permeability coefficient, the measured effective porosity closely aligns with the design values. The examined VLPC exhibits a peak compressive strength of 17.7 MPa and a maximum bending strength of 2.1 MPa after 28 days. Notably, an escalation in porosity corresponds to a decrease in both the compressive and the bending strength of VLPC. Introducing mineral additives, particularly silicon powder, is shown to be effective in enhancing the strength of VLPC. Furthermore, substituting slag sulfonate cement for ordinary cement significantly diminishes the alkalinity of VLPC, resulting in a pH below 8.5 at 28 days. Mineral additives also contribute to a reduction in the pH of concrete. In the context of sustainable solutions, this study examines the pyrolysis process applied to corn cobs, with the aim of producing biochar and assessing its effectiveness in combating air pollution. In particular, it examines the influence of different pyrolysis temperatures on biochar properties. The results reveal a temperature-dependent trend in biochar yield, which peaks at 400 °C, accompanied by changes in elemental composition indicating increased stability and extended shelf life. In addition, high pyrolysis temperatures, above 400 °C, produce biochars with enlarged surfaces and improved pore structures. Notably, the highest pyrolysis temperature explored in this study is 600 °C, which significantly influences the observed properties of biochars. This study also explores the potential of biochar as an NO2 adsorbent, as identified by chemical interactions revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. This research presents a promising and sustainable approach to tackling air pollution using corn cob biochar, providing insight into optimized production methods and its potential application as an effective NO2 adsorbent to improve air quality.
