This study evaluated the effects of the light intensity of curing and the post-curing duration on the mechanical properties and accuracy of the interim dental material. After designing the specimen, 3D printing was performed, and the light intensity was divided into groups G20, G60, G80, and G120 (corresponding to 1.4–1.6, 2.2–3.0, 3.8–4.4, and 6.4–7.0 mW/cm2, respectively), with no post-curing or 5, 10, or 20 min of post-curing being performed. The flexural properties, Vickers microhardness, degree of conversion (DC), and 3D accuracy were then evaluated. The flexural properties and Vickers microhardness showed a sharp increase at the beginning of the post-curing and then tended to increase gradually as the light intensity and post-curing time increased (p < 0.001). On the other hand, there was no significant difference between groups in the accuracy analysis of a 3D-printed three-unit bridge. These results indicate that the light intensity of the post-curing equipment influences the final mechanical properties of 3D-printed resin and that post-curing can be made more efficient by optimizing the light intensity and post-curing time. The aim of this study is to prepare ciprofloxacin (CIP) or levofloxacin (LEVO)-incorporated and polydopamine (PDA)-coated nephrite composites for application in drug-eluting contact lenses. PDA was coated onto the surface of nephrite to improve antibacterial activity and to payload antibiotics. CIP or LEVO was incorporated into the PDA layer on the surface of nephrite. Furthermore, CIP-incorporated/PDA-coated nephrite composites were embedded into the contact lenses. PDA-coated nephrite composites showed dull and smooth surfaces according to the dopamine concentration while nephrite itself has sharp surface morphology. CIP- or LEVO-loaded/PDA-coated nephrite composites also have dull and smooth surface properties. Nano and/or sub-micron clusters were observed in field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observation, indicating that PDA nanoparticles were accumulated and coated onto the surface of nephrite. Furthermore, CIP- or LEVO-incorporated/PDA-coated nephrite composites showed the sustained release of CIP or LEVO in vitro and these properties contributed to the enhanced antibacterial activity of composites compared to nephrite or PDA-coated nephrite composites. CIP-incorporated/PDA-coated nephrite composites were embedded in the contact lenses and then, in an antibacterial study, they showed higher bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) compared to nephrite itself or PDA-coated nephrite composites. We suggest that CIP- or LEVO-loaded/PDA-coated nephrite composite-embedded contact lenses are a promising candidate for therapeutic application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses the finite element method and numerical analysis to develop an eco-friendly composite material with shielding capabilities. A preliminary study was performed to predict the mechanical properties of the composite material. Polyethylene terephthalate and aluminum powder (AP) were selected as the matrix and enhancer, respectively. The particles of AP are spherical, with a diameter of 1 μm. Material properties were investigated as the AP volume fraction (VF) increased from 5–70%. The FEM results show that the physical properties for AP VFs improve by up to 40%, but there is no significant change in the elastic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio at an AP VF of 50–70%. However, the numerical analysis models show that the elastic properties for AP VFs improve by up to 70%. The mechanical properties improved as the VF increased, and the FEM predicted values were reliable for VFs up to 40%. However, it was confirmed that 40% is the limit of AP VF in the FEM. In addition, the FEM and numerical analysis predictions showed that the most similar numerical analysis model was the Halpin–Tsai model. The predictions of the Halpin–Tsai model allowed prediction of the maximum VF above the FEM limit. If the correction coefficients of the FEM and numerical analysis models are derived based on the predictions of this study and future experimental results, reliable predictions can be obtained for the physical properties of composite materials. This study proposes an isotropic composite material with enhanced elastic properties based on a reinforcement mechanism using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) spherical molecules. Elastic properties are predicted through finite element analysis by randomly mixing UHMWPE using polypropylene (PP) as a matrix. The change in elastic properties of the composite is calculated for volume fractions of UHMWPE from 10 to 70%. Furthermore, the results of finite element analysis are compared and analyzed using a numerical approach. The results show that the physical properties of the composite material are enhanced by the excellent elastic properties of the UHMWPE, and the finite element analysis results confirm that it is effective up to a volume fraction of 35%. This study proposes an electromagnetic shielding material sprayed with silver-coated copper powder (core-shell powder). The shielding properties of the material are analyzed in details section. Cross-sectional observation and sheet resistance measurement were used to determine the thickness and electrical conductivity of the electromagnetic shielding layer, which was generated by spray-coating; this aided in confirming the uniformity of the coating film. The results indicate that the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness increases when the silver-coated copper paste (core-shell paste) is used as the coating material rather than the conventional aluminum base. The proposed material can be used in various frequency ranges owing to the excellent shielding effectiveness of the core-shell paste used in this study. Further investigations on the optimized spray-coating type of electromagnetic shielding material are required based on the composition of the core-shell paste and the thickness of the coating film. We investigate the copper-wear-protective effects of graphene and boron nitride in single asperity sliding contact with a stiff diamond-coated atomic force microscopy (AFM)-tip. We find that both graphene and boron nitride retard the onset of wear of copper. The retardment of wear is larger with boron nitride than with graphene, which we explain based on their respective out-of-plane stiffnesses. The wear protective effect of boron nitride comes, however, at a price. The out-of-plane stiffness of two-dimensional materials also determines their friction coefficient in a wear-less friction regime. In recent years, alloy and alloy-ceramic coatings have gained a considerable attention owing to their favorable physicochemical and technological properties. In this review, we investigate Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition. Electrodeposition is a versatile tool and cost-effective electrochemical method used to produce high quality metal coatings. Surface finish and tribological properties of the coatings can be further improved by the addition of suitable agents and control of deposition operating conditions. In this review, Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition are reviewed by critically evaluating previous researches. To analyze the reinforcement effect of adding polymer to solder paste, epoxies were mixed with two currently available Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (wt.% SAC305) and Sn-59Bi (wt.%) solder pastes and specimens prepared by bonding chip resistors to a printed circuit board. The effect of repetitive thermal stress on the solder joints was then analyzed experimentally using thermal shock testing (−40 °C to 125 °C) over 2000 cycles. The viscoplastic stress–strain curves generated in the solder were simulated using finite element analysis, and the hysteresis loop was calculated. The growth and propagation of cracks in the solder were also predicted using strain energy formulas. It was confirmed that the epoxy paste dispersed the stress inside the solder joint by externally supporting the solder fillet, and crack formation was suppressed, improving the lifetime of the solder joint. This study investigated the suppression of the growth of the intermetallic compound (IMC) layer that forms between epoxy solder joints and the substrate in electronic packaging by adding graphene nano-sheets (GNSs) to 96.5Sn–3.0Ag–0.5Cu (wt %, SAC305) solder whose bonding characteristics had been strengthened with a polymer. IMC growth was induced in isothermal aging tests at 150 °C, 125 °C and 85 °C for 504 h (21 days). Activation energies were calculated based on the IMC layer thickness, temperature, and time. The activation energy required for the formation of IMCs was 45.5 KJ/mol for the plain epoxy solder, 52.8 KJ/mol for the 0.01%-GNS solder, 62.5 KJ/mol for the 0.05%-GNS solder, and 68.7 KJ/mol for the 0.1%-GNS solder. Thus, the preventive effects were higher for increasing concentrations of GNS in the epoxy solder. In addition, shear tests were employed on the solder joints to analyze the relationship between the addition of GNSs and the bonding characteristics of the solder joints. It was found that the addition of GNSs to epoxy solder weakened the bonding characteristics of the solder, but not critically so because the shear force was higher than for normal solder (i.e., without the addition of epoxy). Thus, the addition of a small amount of GNSs to epoxy solder can suppress the formation of an IMC layer during isothermal aging without significantly weakening the bonding characteristics of the epoxy solder paste. In the present study, the reproducibility and postoperative stability of a 3D printed surgical guide were evaluated in mandibular reconstruction with an osteocutaneous free flap (OCFF), including a fibular free flap (FFF) and deep circumflex iliac artery free flap (DCIA). Fifteen patients were enrolled, and a 3D surgical guide was fabricated by simulation surgery using preoperative (T0) Computed tomography (CT) images. Mandibular reconstruction was performed with OCFF using the 3D surgical guide. Postoperative CTs were taken immediately, 1 week (T1), and 6 months (T2) after surgery, to evaluate the reproducibility of the 3D surgical guide and condyle stability. Error of the 3D surgical guide ranged from 0.85 to 2.56 mm. There were no differences in reproducibility according to flap type. Condylar error and error at mandible midpoint were significantly different in FFF. However, there was no difference in DCIA error between the condyle and mandible midpoint. Regarding condyle stability 6 months after surgery, condyles moved more than 2 mm (up to 2.85 mm) in FFF, whereas there were no significant movement in DCIA. Careful intraoperative flap fixation and closed postoperative observation should be considered for stable clinical outcome, especially in the case of FFF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four quaternary Zintl phases with mixed-cations in the Yb14-xCaxAlSb11 (4.81 ≤ x ≤ 10.57) series have been synthesized by using the arc-melting and the Sn metal-flux reaction methods, and the isotypic crystal structures of the title compounds have been characterized by both powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (PXRD and SXRD) analyses. The overall crystal structure adopting the Ca14AlSb11-type can be described as a pack of four different types of the spiral-shaped one-dimensional octahedra chains with various turning radii, each of which is formed by the distorted ((Yb/Ca)Sb6) octahedra. Four symmetrically-independent cationic sites contain mixed occupations of Yb2+ and Ca2+ with different mixing ratios and display a particular site preference by two cationic elements. Two hypothetical structural models of Yb4Ca10AlSb11 with different cationic arrangements were designed and exploited to study the details of site and bond energies. QVAL values provided the rationale for the observed site preference based on the electronegativity of each atom. Density of states (DOS) curves indicated a semiconducting property of the title compounds, and crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) plots explained individual chemical bonding between components. Thermal conductivity measurement was performed for Yb8.42(4)Ca5.58AlSb11, and the result was compared to compounds without mixed cations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of NF3 is significantly increasing every year. However, NF3 is a greenhouse gas with a very high global warming potential. Therefore, the development of a material to replace NF3 is required. F3NO is considered a potential replacement to NF3. In this study, the characteristics and cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma to replace the greenhouse gas NF3 were examined. Etching of SiO2 thin films was performed, the DC offset of the plasma of both gases (i.e., NF3 and F3NO) was analyzed, and a residual gas analysis was performed. Based on the analysis results, the characteristics of the F3NO plasma were studied, and the SiO2 etch rates of the NF3 and F3NO plasmas were compared. The results show that the etch rates of the two gases have a difference of 95% on average, and therefore, the cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma was demonstrated, and the potential benefit of replacing NF3 with F3NO was confirmed.
