Natural fibres, valued for their low density, cost-effectiveness, high strength-to-weight ratio, and efficient energy absorption, are increasingly emerging as alternatives to synthetic materials in green composites. Although they cannot fully replace synthetic counterparts, like carbon, in structural applications due to their inferior mechanical performance, combining them through hybridization presents a potential solution. This approach promotes a balance between environmental benefits and mechanical efficiency. Recently, the transportation sector has shifted its focus towards delivering lightweight and crashworthy composite structures to improve vehicle performance, address safety concerns, and minimise environmental impact through the use of eco-friendly materials. The crashworthiness of energy absorbers, typically thin-walled structures, is influenced by several factors, including their material and geometric design. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of recent studies focused on the crashworthiness of fibre-reinforced, thin-walled composites under axial crushing. It explores different aspects, such as their materials, cross-sections, stacking sequences, triggering or filling mechanisms, and the effect of loading rate speed. Emphasis is placed on natural-fibre-based materials, including a comparative analysis of synthetic ones and their hybridization. The primary objective is to review the progress of solutions using green composites as energy absorbers in the automotive industry, considering their lightweight design, crashworthiness, and environmental sustainability. Woven flax-carbon hybrid polyamide biocomposites offer a blend of carbon fibers' mechanical strength and flax's environmental advantages, potentially developing material applications. This study investigated their thermal behavior, degradation kinetics, and durability to water uptake and relative humidity exposure and compared them with pure flax and carbon composites with the same matrix. The hybrid composite exhibited intermediate water/moisture absorption levels between pure flax and carbon composites, with 7.2% water absorption and 3.5% moisture absorption. It also displayed comparable thermal degradation resistance to the carbon composite, effectively maintaining its weight up to 300 °C. Further analysis revealed that the hybrid composite exhibited a decomposition energy of 268 kJ/mol, slightly lower than the carbon composite's value of 288.5 kJ/mol, indicating similar thermal stability. Isothermal lifetime estimation, employing the activation energy (Ed) and degree of conversion facilitated by the Model Free Kinetics method, indicated a 41% higher service life of the hybrid laminate at room temperature compared to the carbon laminate. A series of metal- and silica-containing carbon-based nanocomposites were synthesized by pyrolysis of a resorcinol–formaldehyde polymer modified with metal oxide/silica nanocomposites (MxOy/SiO2, where M = Mg, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn) via the thermal oxidative destruction of metal acetates adsorbed on highly dispersed silica (A380). The concentration of metals was 3.0 mmol/g SiO2. The phase composition and morphological, structural and textural properties of the carbon materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, SEM, Raman spectroscopy and low-temperature N2 adsorption. Thermal decomposition under a nitrogen atmosphere and in air was analyzed using TG–FTIR and TG–DTG–DSC techniques to determine the influence of the filler on the decomposition process. The synthesized composites show mesoporous structures with high porosity and narrow pore size distributions. It could be shown that the textural properties and the final composition of the nanocomposites depend on the metal oxide fillers of the precursors. The data obtained show that nickel and copper promote the degree of graphitization and a structural order with the highest porosity and largest specific surface area of the hybrid composites. The good adsorption properties of the obtained materials were shown for the recovery of p-chlorophenol and p-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The titanium alloy components utilized in the aviation field are typically large in size and possess complex structures. By utilizing multiple additive manufacturing processes, the precision and efficiency requirements of production can be met. We investigated the hybrid additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V using a combination of cold metal transfer additive manufacturing (CMTAM) and laser metal deposition (LMD), as well as the feasibility of using the CMT-LMD hybrid additive manufacturing process for fabricating Ti-6Al-4V components. Microstructural examinations, tensile testing coupled with digital image correlation and dynamic compressive experiments (by the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system) were employed to assess the parts. The results indicate that the interface of the LMD and CMTAM zone formed a compact metallurgical bonding. In the CMTAM and LMD zone, the prior-β grains exhibit epitaxial growth, forming columnar prior-β grains. Due to laser remelting, the CMT-LMD hybrid additive zone experiences grain refinement, resulting in equiaxed prior-β grains at the interface with an average grain size smaller than that of the CMTAM and LMD regions. The microstructures reveal significant differences in grain orientation and morphology among the zones, with distinct textures forming in each zone. In the CMT-LMD hybrid zone, due to interfacial strengthening, strain concentration occurs in the arc additive zone during tensile testing, leading to fracture on the CMTAM zone. Under high-strain-rate dynamic impact conditions, the LMD region exhibits ductile fracture, while the CMTAM zone demonstrates brittle fracture. The hybrid zone combines ductile and brittle fracture modes, and the CMT-LMD hybrid material exhibits superior dynamic impact performance compared to the single deposition zone. Aseptic implant loosening after a total joint replacement is partially influenced by material-specific factors when cobalt–chromium alloys are used, including osteolysis induced by wear and corrosion products and stress shielding. Here, we aim to characterize a hybrid material consisting of alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) ceramics and additively manufactured Ti-35Nb-6Ta (TiNbTa) alloys, which are joined by a glass solder. The structure of the joint, the static and fatigue shear strength, the influence of accelerated aging, and the cytotoxicity with human osteoblasts are characterized. Furthermore, the biomechanical properties of the functional demonstrators of a femoral component for total knee replacements are evaluated. The TiNbTa-ATZ specimens showed a homogenous joint with statistically distributed micro-pores and a slight accumulation of Al-rich compounds at the glass solder–TiNbTa interface. Shear strengths of 26.4 ± 4.2 MPa and 38.2 ± 14.4 MPa were achieved for the TiNbTa-ATZ and Ti-ATZ specimens, respectively, and they were not significantly affected by the titanium material used, nor by accelerated aging (p = 0.07). All of the specimens survived 107 cycles of shear loading to 10 MPa. Furthermore, the TiNbTa-ATZ did not impair the proliferation and metabolic activity of the human osteoblasts. Functional demonstrators made of TiNbTa-ATZ provided a maximum bearable extension–flexion moment of 40.7 ± 2.2 Nm. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo, as well as interlaminar hybrid composites reinforced with both bamboo and synthetic fibres in an epoxy matrix. Bamboo and glass, aramid, and carbon bidirectional fabrics were used with a bi-component epoxy matrix to fabricate the composite materials using the vacuum bagging process. The synthetic fabrics were placed on the outer layers, while the bamboo fabrics were used as the core of the hybrid composites. The developed composites were characterized and compared in terms of morphological, physical, and mechanical properties. Further, thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis was used to measure and compare the degradation temperature of the composites studied. Finally, a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed in order to examine the fracture surfaces of the specimens tested. It was found that the fibre hybridization technique significantly improved the general mechanical properties. TGA analysis showed an increase in the thermal stability of the composites obtained by incorporating the synthetic fibres, confirming the effect of hybridization and efficient fibre matrix interfacial adhesion. The results from this work showed that the use of synthetic fibre reinforcements can help to significantly improve the mechanical and thermal properties of bamboo fibre-reinforced composites. Hybrid materials are a recent addition in the field of restorative dentistry for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) indirect restorations. The long-term clinical success of modern dental restorative materials is influenced by multiple factors. Among the characteristics affecting the longevity of a restoration, the mechanical properties and physicοchemical interactions are of utmost importance. While numerous researchers constantly evaluate mechanical properties, the biological background of resin-based CAD/CAM biomaterials is scarcely investigated and, therefore, less described in the literature. This review aims to analyze biofilm formation on the surfaces of novel, hybrid, resin-based CAD/CAM materials and evaluate the methodological protocols followed to assess microbial growth. It is demonstrated that the surface structure, the composition and the finishing and polishing procedures on the surface of a dental restorative material influence initial bacterial adhesion; however, most studies focus on in vitro protocols, and in vivo and/or in situ research of microbiomics in CAD/CAM restorative materials is lacking, obstructing an accurate understanding of the bioadhesion phenomenon in the oral cavity. The paper presents the results of research on hybrid composites made of unsaturated polyester resin based on post-consumer recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate). The polymeric materials were reinforced with quartz flour, which is a common inorganic mineral filler. An environmentally friendly cobalt polymer solution was used to cure the polyester matrix. The results showed the quantitative influence of the quartz filler on the thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of the quartz–polyester composites. A change in the surface wettability and the polarity of the polymeric materials was also noticed, with some deterioration of their gloss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document is a summary of a special issue of the journal Materials, titled "Damage Analysis for Composite Materials: Methods, Testing and Evaluation." The special issue focuses on the study of the outcomes of damage in composite parts, including modeling techniques, failure modes, damage initiation and propagation, durability and fatigue analysis, damage tolerance and repair, non-destructive evaluation, post-failure analysis, and environmental concerns. The issue includes 10 research articles that cover a range of topics related to damage analysis in composite materials. Three-dimensional (3D) packaging using through-Si-via (TSV) is a key technique for achieving high-density integration, high-speed connectivity, and for downsizing of electronic devices. This paper describes recent developments in TSV fabrication and bonding methods in advanced 3D electronic packaging. In particular, the authors have overviewed the recent progress in the fabrication of TSV, various etching and functional layers, and conductive filling of TSVs, as well as bonding materials such as low-temperature nano-modified solders, transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding, Cu pillars, composite hybrids, and bump-free bonding, as well as the role of emerging high entropy alloy (HEA) solders in 3D microelectronic packaging. Composite materials are used in a substantial number of products. Environmental concerns highlight the need for the inclusion of recovered waste in their formulation, thus reducing their carbon footprint. These solutions raise the need to confirm the mechanical characteristics of these materials, avoiding unwanted failures. In this work, the authors present an experimental study on the drilling effects on fibrous–particulate hybrid composites made of glass/carbon fabrics and three different micro-inclusions: silica particles, recycled carbon fibre powder and cement. The mechanical features of the plates are confirmed by thrust force monitoring during drilling and by flexural testing. The range of results confirm the mechanical outcomes due to machining. The plates with monolithic carbon fabric or with carbon fabric plies in the outer plies returned higher mechanical characteristics. The plates with micro-inclusions had enhanced the flexural strength by 23% and 10%, in 40% and 60% fabric plates, respectively. The results demonstrate that the use of alternative formulations with micro-inclusions from recovered waste can contribute both to the reduction of the mechanical degradation of drilled hybrid composites and to environmental purposes by avoiding the increase in landfill waste. The aim of this study was to compare the potential of standard ion-releasing materials to repair demineralized lesions with recently introduced alkasite and glass hybrid materials. Glass ionomer (GC Fuji TRIAGE), two glass hybrids (EQUIA Forte HT, Riva SC), calcium silicate cement (Biodentine) and an alkasite (Cention Forte) were tested. A total of 72 human third molars were used for sample preparation; on the dentine surface, a class-I cavity was prepared, and one half was covered with nail varnish. The teeth were subjected to a demineralization protocol, filled with the examined materials, and cut in half. The evaluation included a dentine microhardness assessment (n = 10) and SEM/EDS analysis (n = 2). The results were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 statistical software and compared using an analysis of variance and Scheffe post-hoc test. The statistical significance level was set to 0.05. Mean microhardness values (HV0.1) after 14 and 28 days were, respectively: EQUIA Forte HT (26.7 ± 1.45 and 37.74 ± 1.56), Riva Self Cure (19.66 ± 1.02 and 29.58 ± 1.18), Cention Forte (19.01 ± 1.24 and 27.93 ± 1.33), Biodentine (23.35 ± 1.23 and 29.92 ± 1.02), GC Fuji TRIAGE (25.94 ± 1.35 and 33.87 ± 5.57) and control group (15.57 ± 0.68 and 15.64 ± 0.82). The results were significantly different between most groups (p < 0.001). SEM/EDS revealed varying patterns, material deposits and distinct elemental variations. To conclude, all materials increased microhardness and affected the dentine surface appearance and chemical composition; EQUIA Forte HT demonstrated the most pronounced effects. The thermoelectric materials that operate at room temperature represent a scientific challenge in finding chemical compositions with three optimized, independent parameters, namely electrical and thermal conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient. Here, we explore the concept of the formation of hybrid composites between carbon-based materials and oxides, with the aim of modifying their thermoelectric performance at room temperature. Two types of commercially available graphene-based materials are selected: N-containing reduced graphene oxide (NrGO) and expanded graphite (ExGr). Although the NrGO displays the lowest thermal conductivity at room temperature, the ExGr is characterized by the lowest electrical resistivity and a negative Seebeck coefficient. As oxides, we choose two perspective thermoelectric materials: p-type Ca3Co4O9 and n-type Zn0.995Al0.005O. The hybrid composites were prepared by mechanical milling, followed by a pelleting. The thermoelectric efficiency was evaluated on the basis of its measured electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity at room temperature. It was found that that 2 wt.% of ExGr or NrGO leads to an enhancement of the thermoelectric activity of Ca3Co4O9, while, for Zn0.995Al0.005O, the amount of ExGr varies between 5 and 20 wt.%. Statement of problem: Nowadays, milling is still the gold standard for fabricating indirect restorations, but to overcome its disadvantages, there are alternatives, such as 3D printing. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the gaps between the prepared tooth and milled and printed onlays fabricated with the same CAD design. It also aimed to determine the gap reproducibility across onlays fabricated by 3D printing and milling. Methods: A resin tooth was prepared for an onlay. After scanning the preparation, an onlay was designed with proprietary dental software. Next, 22 onlays were milled in a graphene-reinforced PMMA disc (Group 1), and 22 onlays were 3D-printed with a hybrid composite material (Group 2). After that, all fabricated restorations were scanned and superimposed on the scanned prepared resin tooth. Subsequently, a specific software was used to measure the margin, central, and intaglio-located gap between the milled or printed restoration and the preparation. Finally, measurements were compared with a multifactor analysis of variance. Results: The results demonstrated that printed onlays (Group 2) adapted better to the prepared tooth than the milled ones (Group 1) (p < 0.05). The comparison of standard deviations showed the better gap reproducibility of printed onlays (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study concluded that the printed onlays adapted significantly better to the prepared tooth than the milled onlays. Biomacromolecules control mineral formation during the biomineralization process, but the effects of the organic components' functionality on the type of mineral phase is still unclear. The biomimetic precipitation of calcium phosphates in a physiological medium containing either polycarboxybetaine (PCB) or polysulfobetaine (PSB) was investigated in this study. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) or a mixture of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) in different ratios were identified depending on the sequence of initial solution mixing and on the type of the negative functional group of the polymer used. The more acidic character of the sulfo group in PSB than the carboxy one in PCB determines the dominance of the acidic solid phases, namely, an acidic amorphous phase or DCPD. In the presence of PCB, the formation of ACP with acicular particles arranged in bundles with the same orientation was observed. A preliminary study on the remineralization potential of the hybrid material with the participation of PSB and a mixture of OCP and DCPD did not show an increase in enamel density, contrary to the materials based on PCB and ACP. Moreover, the latter showed the creation of a newly formed crystal layer similar to that of the underlying enamel. This defines PCB/ACP as a promising material for enamel remineralization. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) and hybrid organo-halide perovskites are two important types of hybrid nanoscale frameworks with great potential in materials chemistry. Both are currently under intensive investigation for a wide range of possible applications. Recent results suggest that POSS can be attractive passivating and structure-controlling agents for perovskite materials. In this review, we present the importance of POSS in engineering the structures of inorganic cesium-halide perovskites CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) to create a new class of hybrid derivatives with improved properties. The combination of these two components can be an effective strategy for controlling the perovskite crystallization process. In addition, passivation of surface defects/bulk and the engineering of energy and optoelectronic properties of perovskite-based materials can be achieved following this method. A series of homogeneous hybrid BPA.DA-NVP@Eu2L3 materials were obtained through an in situ approach where the luminescent dopant was formed at the molecular level with different contents (0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1; and 2% by weight). A Europium(III) complex (Eu2L3) with quinoline-2,4-dicarboxylic acid was applied as a luminescence additive while a polymer matrix consisted of a combination of bisphenol A diacrylate (BPA.DA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. Synthesis steps and the final materials were monitored by NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The emission, excitation spectra, lifetime, and quantum yield measurements were applied for the determination of the photophysical characteristics. The thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained materials were tested via thermal analysis methods (TG/DTG/DSC and TG-FTIR) in air and nitrogen atmospheres, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and hardness and bending measurements. Generally, even a small addition of the metal complex component causes changes in the thermal, mechanical, and luminescent properties. Hybrid materials with a greater europium complex content are characterized by a lower stiffness and hardness while the heterogeneity and the flexibility of the samples increase. A very small amount of an Eu2L3 admixture (0.1% wt.) in a hybrid material causes an emission in the red spectral range and the luminescence intensity was reached for the BPA-DA-NVP@1%Eu2L3 material. Semiconducting nanomaterials based heterogeneous photocatalysis represent a low-cost, versatile technique for environmental remediation, including pollution mitigation, energy management and other environmental aspects. Herein, we demonstrate the syntheses of various heterogeneous photocatalysts based on highly reduced graphene oxide (HRG) and vanadium oxide (VOx)-based nanocomposites (HRG–VOx). Different shapes (rod, sheet and urchin forms) of VOx nanoparticles were successfully fabricated on the surface of HRG under solvo-/hydrothermal conditions by varying the amount of water and ethanol. The high concentration of water in the mixture resulted in the formation of rod-shaped VOx nanoparticles, whereas increasing the amount of ethanol led to the production of VOx sheets. The solvothermal condition using pure ethanol as solvent produced VOx nano-urchins on the surface of HRG. The as-prepared hybrid materials were characterized using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including X-ray diffraction, UV–vis, FTIR, SEM and TEM analyses. The photocatalytic activities of different HRG–VOx nanocomposites were investigated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The experimental data revealed that all HRG–VOx composite-based photocatalysts demonstrated excellent performance toward the photocatalytic degradation of the organic dyes. Among all photocatalysts studied, the HRG–VOx nanocomposite consisting of urchin-shaped VOx nanoparticles (HRG–VOx-U) demonstrated superior photocatalytic properties towards the degradation of dyes. Following some previous work by some of us on the second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Zn(II) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnP), fullerene, and ferrocene (Fc) diads and triads, in the present research, we explore the NLO response of some new hybrids with two-dimensional graphene nanoplates (GNP) instead of a zero-dimensional fullerene moiety as the acceptor unit. The experimental data, collected by Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique in CH2Cl2 solution with a 1907 nm incident wavelength, combined with Coupled-Perturbed (CP) and Finite Field (FF) Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, show a strongly enhanced contribution of the cubic electronic term γ(−2ω; ω, ω, 0), due to the extended π-conjugation of the carbonaceous acceptor moiety. Adhesive bonding between steel and carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite leads to hybrid structures that combine the high strength and ductility of steel with the excellent specific strength and stiffness of CFRP composite. There is, however, a concern regarding possible galvanic corrosion when steel and carbon fibers are bonded together. One way to overcome this problem is placing glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite between the steel and CFRP composite, creating a more complex steel/GFRP/CFRP hybrid structure. Therefore, experimental and numerical studies on the mechanical behavior of the adhesive bonds between the steel sheet and the GFRP/CFRP hybrid composite were carried out. Among the different failure patterns, mode II was chosen for analysis because metal–polymer composite structures are usually subjected to bending, and debonding may occur due to in-plane shear stress. The tested steel/GFRP/CFRP hybrid structure was made of a hot-formed 22MnB5 boron steel sheet, intermediate single-ply bidirectional GFRP composite, and three-ply unidirectional CFRP composite. Additional mechanical tests were also carried out to determine various engineering constants of the components to simulate the debonding process. A finite element model of the steel/GFRP/CFRP hybrid structure with a typical cohesive interface was established and verified against the experimental data. The results showed that due to the use of various materials, the dominant failure modes in the hybrid structure under bending loading were a brittle fracture of the CFRP composite and debonding between the steel and the GFRP composite. However, the load-bearing capacity of the hybrid structure was five times greater than that of a non-reinforced steel sheet. In addition, its mass was only 28% greater than the non-reinforced steel sheet. Hybrid materials based on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and NTU-9 metal–organic frameworks (MOF) were designed and prepared via solvothermal synthesis and calcination in air. The as-prepared photocatalysts were subsequently characterized using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained NTU-9/C3N4 composites showed a greatly improved photocatalytic performance for the degradation of toluene in the gas phase under LED visible-light irradiation (λmax = 415 nm). The physicochemical properties and photocatalytic activities of the obtained NTU-9/C3N4 materials were tuned by varying the NTU-9 content (5–15 wt%) and preparation method of the composite materials. For composites prepared by calcination, the photocatalytic activity increased with decreasing NTU-9 content as a result of the formation of TiO2 from the MOFs. The best photocatalytic performance (65% of toluene was photodegraded after 60 min) was achieved by the NTU-9/C3N4 sample prepared via the solvothermal method and containing 15 wt% MOF, which can be attributed to the appropriate amount and stable combination of composite components, efficient charge separation, and enhanced visible-light absorption ability. The current work is focused on numerical and experimental studies of woven fabric composites modified by hybridisation with biological (cellulosic) filler materials. The mechanical performance of the composites is characterized under tensile, bending and impact loads and the effect of hybridisation is observed with respect to pure and nonhybrid composites. Numerical models are developed using computational tools to predict mechanical performance under tensile loading. The computational prediction results are compared and validated with relevant experimental results. This research is aimed at understanding the mechanical performance of basalt–epoxy composites partially reinforced with micro-/nano-sized bio-fillers from cellulose and intended for various application areas. Different weave structures, e.g., plain, twill, matt, etc., were investigated with respect to the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites. The effects of hybridizing with cellulose particles and different weave patterns of the basalt fabric are studied. In general, the use of high-strength fibres such as basalt along with cellulosic fillers representing up to 3% of the total weight improves the mechanical performance of the hybrid structures. The thermomechanical performance of the hybrid composites improved significantly by using basalt fabric as well as by addition of 3% weight of cellulosic fillers. Results reveal the advantages of hybridisation and the inclusion of natural cellulosic fillers in the hybrid composite structures. The material developed is suitable for high-end applications in components for construction that demand advanced mechanical and thermomechanical performance. Introduction: Today's dentistry frequently employs bonded partial restorations, which are usually fabricated in ceramic materials. In the last decade, hybrid materials have emerged that attempt to combine the properties of composites and ceramics. Objectives: To evaluate in vitro, by means of a microtensile test, the bond strength between CAD-CAM restorative materials and the cement recommended by their manufacturer. Material and Method: From blocks of CAD-CAM restorative material bonded to composite blocks (Filtek 500®), beams with a bonding area of approximately 1 mm2 were made and divided into four groups: EMAX (IPS e.max CAD® lithium disilicate), VE (VITA Enamic® polymer-infiltrated ceramic matrix), LUA (Lava Ultimate® nano-ceramic resin with sandblasting protocol) and LUS (Lava Ultimate® nano-ceramic resin with silica coating protocol). In each group, perimeter (external) or central (internal) beams were differentiated according to the position in the block. The samples were tested on the LMT 100® microtensile machine. Using optical microscopy, the fractures were categorized as adhesive or cohesive (of the restorative material or composite), and the data were analysed with parametric tests (ANOVA). Results: The LUS group had the highest results (42 ± 20 MPa), followed by the LUA group (38 ± 18 MPa). EMAX had a mean of 34 ± 16 MPa, and VE was the lowest in this study (30 ± 17 MPa). In all groups, the central beams performed better than the perimeter beams. Both EMAX and VE had the most adhesive fractures, while LUA and LUS had a predominance of cohesive fractures. The thermal decomposition path of synthetically and pharmacologically useful hybrid materials was analyzed in inert and oxidizing conditions for the first time and presented in this article. All the imidazoline/dimethyl succinate hybrids (1–5) were studied using the simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG) coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS). It was found that the tested compounds were thermally stable up to 200–208 °C (inert conditions) and up to 191–197 °C (oxidizing conditions). In both furnace atmospheres, their decomposition paths were multi-step processes. At least two major stages (inert conditions) and three major stages (oxidizing conditions) of their decomposition were observed. The first decomposition stage occurred between T5% and 230–237 °C. It was connected with the breaking of one ester bond. This led to the emission of one methanol molecule and the formation of radicals capable of further radical reactions in both used atmospheres. At the second decomposition stage (Tmax2) between 230–237 °C and 370 °C (inert conditions), or at about 360 °C (oxidizing conditions), the cleavage of the second ester bond and N-N and C-C bonds led to the emission of CH3OH, HCN, N2, and CO2 and other radical fragments that reacted with each other to form clusters and large clusters. Heating the tested compounds to a temperature of about 490 °C resulted in the emission of NH3, HCN, HNCO, aromatic amines, carbonyl fragments, and the residue (Tmax2a) in both atmospheres. In oxidizing conditions, the oxidation of the formed residues (Tmax3) was related to the production of CO2, CO, and H2O. These studies confirmed the same radical decomposition mechanism of the tested compounds both in inert and oxidizing conditions. The antitumor activities and toxicities to normal cells of the imidazoline/dimethyl succinate hybrids were also evaluated. As a result, the two hybrid materials (3 and 5) proved to be the most selective in biological studies, and therefore, they should be utilized in further, more extended in vivo investigations. There is currently a lack of scientific reports on the use of composites based on UDMA resin containing HAp in conservative dentistry. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the effect of hydroxyapatite content on the properties of a hybrid composite used in conservative dentistry. This paper compares a commercial hybrid composite with experimental composites treated with 2% by weight (b/w), 5% b/w, and 8% b/w hydroxyapatite. The composites were subjected to bending strength, compression, and diametrical compression tests, as well as those for impact strength, hardness, and tribological wear. The obtained results were subjected to statistical analysis. Increased hydroxyapatite was found to weaken the mechanical properties; however, 2% b/w and 5% b/w hydroxyapatite powder was found to achieve acceptable results. The statistical analysis showed no significant differences. HAp is an effective treatment for composites when applied at a low concentration. Further research is needed to identify an appropriate size of HAp particles that can be introduced into a composite to adequately activate the surface and modification its composition. This work reports on the fabrication of a novel two-layer material composed of a porous tantalum core and a dense Ti6Al4V (Ti64) shell by powder metallurgy. The porous core was obtained by mixing Ta particles and salt space-holders to create large pores, the green compact was obtained by pressing. The sintering behavior of the two-layer sample was studied by dilatometry. The interface bonding between the Ti64 and Ta layers was analyzed by SEM, and the pore characteristics were analyzed by computed microtomography. Images showed that two distinct layers were obtained with a bonding achieved by the solid-state diffusion of Ta particles into Ti64 during sintering. The formation of β-Ti and α′ martensitic phases confirmed the diffusion of Ta. The pore size distribution was in the size range of 80 to 500 µm, and a permeability value of 6 × 10−10 m2 was close to the trabecular bones one. The mechanical properties of the component were dominated mainly by the porous layer, and Young's modulus of 16 GPa was in the range of bones. Additionally, the density of this material (6 g/cm3) was much lower than the one of pure Ta, which helps to reduce the weight for the desired applications. These results indicate that structurally hybridized materials, also known as composites, with specific property profiles can improve the response to osseointegration for bone implant applications. In the pursuit of innovative solutions for modern technologies, particularly in the design and production of new micro/nanostructured materials, microorganisms acting as "natural microtechnologists" can serve as a valuable source of inspiration. This research focuses on harnessing the capabilities of unicellular algae (diatoms) to synthesize hybrid composites composed of AgNPs/TiO2NPs/pyrolyzed diatomaceous biomass (AgNPs/TiO2NPs/DBP). The composites were consistently fabricated through metabolic (biosynthesis) doping of diatom cells with titanium, pyrolysis of the doped diatomaceous biomass, and chemical doping of the pyrolyzed biomass with silver. To characterize the synthesized composites, their elemental and mineral composition, structure, morphology, and photoluminescent properties were analysed using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The study revealed the epitaxial growth of Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of pyrolyzed diatom cells. The antimicrobial potential of the synthesized composites was evaluated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method against prevalent drug-resistant microorganisms, including Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Escherichia coli, both from laboratory cultures and clinical isolates. Hybrid composites, usually combining natural and synthetic reinforcing filaments, have gained a lot of attention due to their better properties than traditional two-component materials. For structural applications of hybrid composites, there is a need to precisely determine their mechanical properties on the basis of the mechanical properties, volume fractions, and geometrical distributions of constituent materials. The most common methods, such as the rule of mixture, are inaccurate. More advanced methods, giving better results in the case of classic composites, are difficult to apply in the case of several types of reinforcement. In the present research, a new estimation method is considered, which is simple and accurate. The approach is based on the definition of two configurations: the real, heterogeneous, multi-phase hybrid composite configuration, and the fictitious, quasi-homogeneous one, in which the inclusions are "smeared out" over a representative volume. A hypothesis of the internal strain energy equivalence between the two configurations is formulated. The effect of reinforcing inclusions on the mechanical properties of a matrix material is expressed by functions of constituent properties, their volume fractions, and geometrical distribution. The analytical formulas are derived for an isotropic case of a hybrid composite reinforced with randomly distributed particles. The validation of the proposed approach is performed by comparing the estimated hybrid composite properties with the results of other methods, and with experimental data available in the literature. It is shown that a very good agreement is obtained between experimentally measured hybrid composite properties and their predictions resulting from the proposed estimation method. It has been demonstrated that a possible solution to reducing delamination in a unidirectional composite laminate lies in the replacement of conventional carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer layers with optimized thin-ply layers, thus creating hybrid laminates. This leads to an increase in the transverse tensile strength of the hybrid composite laminate. This study investigates the performance of a hybrid composite laminate reinforced by thin plies used as adherends in bonded single lap joints. Two different composites with the commercial references Texipreg HS 160 T700 and NTPT-TP415 were used as the conventional composite and thin-ply material, respectively. Three configurations were considered in this study: two reference single lap joints with a conventional composite or thin ply used as the adherends and a hybrid single lap. The joints were quasi-statically loaded and recorded with a high-speed camera, allowing for the determination of damage initiation sites. Numerical models of the joints were also created, allowing for a better understanding of the underlying failure mechanisms and the identification of the damage initiation sites. The results show a significant increase in tensile strength for the hybrid joints compared to the conventional ones as a result of changes in the damage initiation sites and the level of delamination present in the joint. In the present study, surface properties of three types of carbon fibers (CCF300, CCM40J, and CCF800H) on the interface properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) were analyzed. The composites are further modified by graphene oxide (GO) to obtain GO/CF/EP hybrid composites. Meanwhile, the effect of the surface properties of CFs and the additive graphene oxide on the interlaminar shear properties and dynamic thermomechanical properties of GO/CF/EP hybrid composites are also analyzed. The results show that the higher surface oxygen-carbon ratio of carbon fiber (CCF300) has a positive effect on improving the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the CF/EP composites. The Tg of CCF300/EP is 184.4 °C, while the Tg of CCM40J/EP and CCF800/EP are only 177.1 °C and 177.4 °C, respectively. Furthermore, deeper and more dense grooves on the fiber surface (CCF800H and CCM40J) are more conducive to improving the interlaminar shear performance of the CF/EP composites. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CCF300/EP is 59.7 MPa, and that of CCM40J/EP and CCF800H/EP are 80.1 MPa and 83.5 MPa, respectively. For the GO/CF/EP hybrid composites, graphene oxide with abundant oxygen-containing groups is beneficial to improve the interfacial interaction. Graphene oxide can significantly improve the glass transition temperature and interlamellar shear strength of GO/CCF300/EP composites fabricated by CCF300 with a higher surface oxygen-carbon ratio. For the CCM40J and CCF800H with lower surface oxygen-carbon ratio, graphene oxide has a better modification effect on the glass transition temperature and interlamellar shear strength of GO/CCM40J/EP composites fabricated by CCM40J with deeper and finer surface grooves. Regardless of the type of carbon fiber, the GO/CF/EP hybrid composites with 0.1% graphene oxide have the optimized interlaminar shear strength, and the GO/CF/EP hybrid composites with 0.5% graphene oxide have the maximum glass transition temperature. In the last decade, TiO2 nanotubes have attracted the attention of the scientific community and industry due to their exceptional photocatalytic properties, opening a wide range of additional applications in the fields of renewable energy, sensors, supercapacitors, and the pharmaceutical industry. However, their use is limited because their band gap is tied to the visible light spectrum. Therefore, it is essential to dope them with metals to extend their physicochemical advantages. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the preparation of metal-doped TiO2 nanotubes. We address hydrothermal and alteration methods that have been used to study the effects of different metal dopants on the structural, morphological, and optoelectrical properties of anatase and rutile nanotubes. The progress of DFT studies on the metal doping of TiO2 nanoparticles is discussed. In addition, the traditional models and their confirmation of the results of the experiment with TiO2 nanotubes are reviewed, as well as the use of TNT in various applications and the future prospects for its development in other fields. We focus on the comprehensive analysis and practical significance of the development of TiO2 hybrid materials and the need for a better understanding of the structural–chemical properties of anatase TiO2 nanotubes with metal doping for ion storage devices such as batteries. The hybrid use of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and expansive agent (EA) is beneficial for mitigating the autogenous shrinkage of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) without compromising strength. However, the unclear mechanisms behind the synergetic effect of the two materials may hinder the more effective applications of this method. This study clarifies the interactions between SAP and CaO-based EA (CEA) in a UHPC matrix by quantifying the content and distribution of water and hydration products, underlining their influence on the strength and autogenous shrinkage evolution. The high strength of 135 MPa can be achieved in systems with a reasonable combination (S1E1, 0.1 wt%SAP, and 1 wt%CEA), and after 7 days, a 24% reduction in shrinkage was found in the same system, which is more effective than the use SAP or CEA alone at the same dose. The mitigating effect on the autogenous shrinkage of a UHPC matrix with hybrid materials at different stages depends on the competition between the water retention for self-desiccation and portlandite formation. With the continuing formation of hydration products, the microporosity of UHPC matrix under internal curing conditions at 28 d is considerably reduced, resulting in a more compact microstructure. This study also finds a suppressed crystallization pressure of growing portlandite in the extra space provided by emptied SAP, which explains the lost expansion of CEA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using Si as anode materials for Li-ion batteries remain challenging due to its morphological evolution and SEI modification upon cycling. The present work aims at developing a composite consisting of carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (Si@C NPs) intimately embedded in a three-dimensional (3D) graphene hydrogel (GHG) architecture to stabilize Si inside LiB electrodes. Instead of simply mixing both components, the novelty of the synthesis procedure lies in the in situ hydrothermal process, which was shown to successfully yield graphene oxide reduction, 3D graphene assembly production, and homogeneous distribution of Si@C NPs in the GHG matrix. Electrochemical characterizations in half-cells, on electrodes not containing additional conductive additive, revealed the importance of the protective C shell to achieve high specific capacity (up to 2200 mAh.g−1), along with good stability (200 cycles with an average Ceff > 99%). These performances are far superior to that of electrodes made with non-C-coated Si NPs or prepared by mixing both components. These observations highlight the synergetic effects of C shell on Si NPs, and of the single-step in situ preparation that enables the yield of a Si@C-GHG hybrid composite with physicochemical, structural, and morphological properties promoting sample conductivity and Li-ion diffusion pathways. Fiber–metal hybrid composites are widely used in high-tech industries due to their unique combination of mechanical, toughness and ductile properties. Currently, hybrid materials made of metals and high-performance fibers have been limited to layer-by-layer hybridization (fiber–metal laminates). However, layer-by-layer hybridization lacks in fiber to fiber mixing, resulting in poor inter-laminar interfaces. The objective of this paper was to establish the fundamental knowledge and application-related technological principles for the development and fabrication of air-textured commingled yarn composed of glass (GF), stainless steel (SS) and polyamide-6 (PA-6) filaments for fiber–metal hybrid composites. For this purpose, extensive conceptual, design and technological developments were carried out to develop a novel air-texturing nozzle that can produce an innovative metallic commingled yarn. The results show that an innovative metallic commingled yarn was developed using fiber–metal hybrid composites with a composite tensile strength of 700 ± 39 MPa and an E-modulus of 55 ± 7. With the development of convergence technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI), there has been increasing interest in the materials industry. In recent years, numerous studies have attempted to identify and explore multi-functional cutting-edge hybrid materials. In this paper, the international literature on the materials used in hybrid fibers and manufacturing technologies were investigated and their future utilization in the industry is predicted. Furthermore, a systematic review is also conducted. This includes sputtering, electrospun nanofibers, 3D (three-dimensional) printing, shape memory, and conductive materials. Sputtering technology is an eco-friendly, intelligent material that does not use water and can be applied as an advantageous military stealth material and electromagnetic blocking material, etc. Electrospinning can be applied to breathable fabrics, toxic chemical resistance, fibrous drug delivery systems, and nanoliposomes, etc. 3D printing can be used in various fields, such as core-sheath fibers and artificial organs, etc. Conductive materials include metal nanowires, polypyrrole, polyaniline, and CNT (Carbon Nano Tube), and can be used in actuators and light-emitting devices. When shape-memory materials deform into a temporary shape, they can return to their original shape in response to external stimuli. Hybrid materials combining an organic matrix and high-Z nanomaterials show potential for applications in radiation detection, allowing unprecedented device architectures and functionality. Herein, novel hybrid organic–inorganic systems were produced using a mixture of tungstate (CaWO 4 or ZnWO 4 ) nanoparticles with a P3HT:PCBM blend. The nano-tungstates with a crystallite size of 43 nm for CaWO 4 and 30 nm for ZnWO 4 were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Their structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The hybrid systems were used to fabricate direct conversion X-ray detectors able to operate with zero bias voltage. The detector performance was tested in a wide energy range using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. The addition of nanoparticles with high-Z elements improved the detector response to X-ray radiation compared with that of a pure organic P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction cell. The high dynamic range of our detector allows for recording X-ray absorption spectra, including the fine X-ray absorption structure located beyond the absorption edge. Sol-gel production of hybrid materials has, to some extent, revolutionised materials' engineering and the way science and technology perceive the creation of new materials. Despite that, the method presents some limitations that are circumvented by radiation processing. Electron beam irradiation was used to promote synthesis of hybrid structures while using silanol-terminated PDMS, TEOS and TPOZ as precursors. Evaluation of the method's performance was executed by gel fraction determination, WDXRF and FTIR-ATR. Results showed that, although there is some pre-irradiation reactivity between precursors, radiolysis induces scission on multiple sites of precursor's structures, which induces hybrid network formation to a greater extent. Characterisation allowed determining electron beam irradiation to be effective in the creation of Si–O–Zr bonds, resulting in the production of a Class II hybrid material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymeric aluminum organophosphates are a class of nanostructured aluminum-based compounds that can be considered organic and inorganic hybrid materials. Aluminum phosphates have attracted considerable interest due to their ability to enhance composite materials' mechanical characteristics, lightweight, and thermal properties. Extensive studies have shown the potential of aluminum organophosphates as a component in the development of fire-retardant materials. Aluminum–organophosphorus hybrid (APH) materials have been prepared by reacting aluminum oxide hydroxide (boehmite) with alkyl and aryl phosphoric acids and used to prepare composites with epoxy resin. Boehmite is an aluminum oxide hydroxide (γ-AlO(OH)) mineral, a component of the aluminum ore bauxite. In this work, the composites based on epoxy resin Epidian 601 and commercial curing agent IDA were obtained. Pure boehmite and APH hybrids were added as flame retardants. FTIR and TGA analysis showed that obtained APH possesses a hybrid structure, high thermostability, and various morphologies. These new APH were incorporated into epoxy resin. The infrared spectroscopy confirmed the structure of hybrids and composites. Pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry (PCFC) and cone calorimeter analyses were performed to assess the flame retardant properties of the composites. The results showed that the incorporation of 17 wt% APH allows a reduction of heat release rate but to a limited extent in comparison to pure boehmite, which is due to the different decomposition mechanisms of both boehmite and hybrids. The cone calorimetry test showed that residue contents correspond quite well to the mineral fraction from boehmite only. The hybrid APHs appear no more efficient than pure boehmite because the mineral fraction in APH is reduced while phosphate fraction cannot promote significant charring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complex composite materials are used in many areas of dentistry. Initially, chemically hardened materials were also used, and in this group nanohybrid composites are highly valued. They are often used today, mainly for the direct reconstruction of damaged hard tooth tissue materials for rebuilding damaged tissues using indirect adhesive techniques. The research was conducted to determine the mechanical properties of materials with nanofillers. The article focuses on methods of important test methods for dental prosthetics: resilience, abrasion, wear test, impact strength, hardness, SEM, and chemical analysis. As part of this work, five different series of hybrid composites with nano-fillers were tested. The mechanical properties of composites, such as compressive strength, microhardness, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity, depend mainly on the type, particle size, and amount of filler introduced. The obtained test results showed that the type and amount of nanofiller have a significant influence on the mechanical and tribological properties. The introduction of nanofillers allowed us to obtain higher mechanical properties compared to classic materials discussed by other researchers. This paper presents the results of studies to understand the influence of hybridisation on mechanical and tribological behaviour as well as dry sliding wear of aluminium metal matrix composites. Sillimanite and boron carbide (B4C) were used as primary and secondary reinforcements and pure aluminium was used as the matrix material. The composite was fabricated by using a vacuum assisted stir casting process. Different research instruments were used, including a scanning electron microscope with EDX spectrometer, a surface measurement device, a thermal image analyser, as well as a tribotester. The results show that tensile, impact strength and hardness of the hybridised composites are superior (a step ahead) than unreinforced and primary composites. The wear behaviour of the fabricated specimens was tested for the dry sliding wear behaviour under the load range of 10–50 N with the steps of 20 N for the sliding velocities 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 m/s over a distance of 1000 m. The wear rate increased with load and decreased as the wt.% of reinforcement increased. The wear rate of the composite with 10 wt.% Al2SiO5 was approximately 44% lower than that of the composite with 5 wt.% Al2SiO5. The same dependence was noted for hybrid composite (5 wt.% Al2SiO5 + 5 wt.% B4C)—the wear rate was approximately 50.8% lower than that of the composite with 5 wt.% Al2SiO5 under the same test condition. The friction coefficient decreased as the weight percentage of the reinforcement (Al2SiO5 and B4C) increased due to the uniform distribution of the reinforcement on the surface of the composites. The main wear mechanism of the studied materials was abrasion wear. The wear mechanism of the composite had tribochemical type. It involved the oxidation and transfer of the material, which formed protective tribolayers ensuring an additional sliding process. This work sheds light on the first steps towards using glass fiber waste for semi-structural applications. This work aims to improve the properties of random flax fiber composites by incorporating waste glass fibers (WGF) obtained from the fiber production line. The waste glass fibers were incorporated as a core structure between the flax layers to form a hybrid composite. Two routes of manufacturing viz. vacuum infusion and autoclave were used to identify the optimum route to incorporate the WGF in flax fiber composites. The quality of composites was investigated in terms of residual void content and thickness uniformity. Residual void content was identified to be directly proportional to the WGF content in the composites. With the increase in WGF content, the flexural and impact properties were increased by 47% and 117%, respectively, indicating a positive hybridization effect. The interface of hybrid carbon/E-glass fibres composite is interlayered with Xantu.layr® polyamide 6,6 nanofibre veil to localise cracking to promote a gradual failure. The pseudo-ductile response of these novel stacking sequences examined under quasi-static three-point bending show a change to the failure mechanism. The change in failure mechanism due to the interfacial toughening is examined via SEM micrographs. The incorporation of veil toughening led to a change in the dominant failure mechanism, resulting in fibre yielding by localised kinking and reduced instances of buckling failure. In alternated carbon and glass fibre samples with glass fibre undertaking compression, a pseudo-ductile response with veil interlayering was observed. The localisation of the fibre failure, due to the inclusion of the veil, resulted in kink band formations which were found to be predictable in previous micro buckling models. The localisation of failure by the veil interlayer resulted in a pseudo-ductile response increasing the strain before failure by 24% compared with control samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, novel hybrid materials exhibiting luminescent properties were prepared and characterized. A top-down approach obtained a series of polymeric materials with incorporated different amounts (0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1, and 2 wt.%) of dopants, i.e., europium(III) and terbium(III) 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylates, as luminescent sources. Methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A diacrylate monomers were applied for matrix formation. The resulting materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal analysis methods (TG-DTG-DSC, TG-FTIR) in air and nitrogen atmosphere, as well as by luminescence spectroscopy. The homogeneity of the resulting materials was investigated by means of optical microscopy. All obtained materials exhibited good thermal stability in both oxidizing and inert atmospheres. The addition of lanthanide(III) complexes slightly changed the thermal decomposition pathways. The main volatile products of materials pyrolysis are carbon oxides, water, methyl methacrylic acid and its derivatives, bisphenol A, 4-propylphenol, and methane. In the present work, we present the superior corrosion inhibition properties of three plant-based products, Fraxinus excelsior (FEAE), Zingiber zerumbet (ZZAE), and Isatis tinctoria (ITAE), that efficiently inhibit the corrosion of mild steel in phosphoric acid. The anti-corrosion and adsorption characteristics were assessed using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. Weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods were used to evaluate the inhibitive performance of the inhibitors on the metal surface. Then, both DFT/DFTB calculations and molecular dynamic simulations were further adopted to investigate the interaction between organic inhibitor molecules and the metal surface. The protective layers assembled using the active constituents, such as carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, of the three plant-based products offer high electrochemical stability at high temperatures and robust protection against aggressive acidic solutions. All electrochemical measurements showed that the inhibition performance of extracts increased by increasing their concentration and improved in the following order: FEAE > ZZAE > ITAE. Further, these extracts worked as mixed-type inhibitors to block the anodic and cathodic active sites on the mild steel surface. Multi-level computational approaches revealed that FEAE is the most adsorbed inhibitor owing to its ability to provide electron lone pairs for electrophilic reactions. The experimental and theoretical results showed good agreement. These results indicate the possibility of replacing conventional compounds with natural substituted organic products in the fabrication of hybrid materials with effective anti-corrosion performance. In order to improve product format quality and material flexibility, variety of application, and cost-effectiveness, SiC, ZrO2, and Al hybrid composites were manufactured in the research utilizing the powder metallurgy (PM) technique. A model was created to predict the tribological behavior of SiC–ZrO2–Al hybrid composites using statistical data analysis and gene expression programming (GEP) based on artificial intelligence. For the purpose of examining the impact of zirconia concentration, sliding distance, and applied stress on the wear behavior of hybrid composites, a comprehensive factor design of experiments was used. The developed GEP model was sufficiently robust to achieve extremely high accuracy in the prediction of the determine coefficient (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the root relative square error (RRSE). The maximum state of the RMSE was 0.4357 for the GEP-1 (w1) model and the lowest state was 0.7591 for the GEP-4 (w1) model, while the maximum state of the RRSE was 0.4357 for the GEP-1 (w1) model and the minimum state was 0.3115 for the GEP-3 model (w1). Marine fouling on concrete has become one of the severest problems that damage the surface and even cause internal corrosion of marine concrete. Dissimilarly to the previous abuse of toxic antifoulants, developing hydrophobic waterborne antifouling materials could be regarded as one of the most environment-friendly and potential directions to protect marine concrete. However, the insufficient hydrophobicity, antifouling, and mechanical properties limit their application. Herein, we reported a series of hybrid coatings combining hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) decorated waterborne fluoro silicone polyurethane (H) and HPG-grafted graphene oxide (G-HPG) that improve the hydrophobicity, antifouling, and mechanical properties. The hybrid materials were modified by the hyperbranched polyglycerol synthesized based on the anionic-ring-opening reaction between glycerol and ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol. Remarkably, the hydrophobicity (115.19°) and antifouling properties (BSA absorption of 2.33 μg/cm2 and P. tricornutum attachment of 1.289 × 104 CFU/cm2) of the materials could be developed by the modification of HPG with higher generation numbers and backbone molecular weights. Moreover, the mechanical properties negligibly decreased (tensile strength decreased from 11.29 MPa to 10.49 MPa, same pencil hardness and adhesion grade as H of 2H and grade 2). The results revealed that the HPG of higher generation numbers and backbone molecular weights could benefit materials with enhanced antifouling properties and hydrophobicity. In this work, we introduce lead-free organic ferroelectric perovskite N-methyl-N′-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)–ammonium triiodide (MDABCO-NH4I3) nanocrystals embedded in three different polymer fibers fabricated by the electrospinning technique, as mechanical energy harvesters. Molecular ferroelectrics offer the advantage of structural diversity and tunability, easy fabrication, and mechanical flexibility. Organic–inorganic hybrid materials are new low-symmetry emerging materials that may be used as energy harvesters because of their piezoelectric or ferroelectric properties. Among these, ferroelectric metal-free perovskites are a class of recently discovered multifunctional materials. The doped nanofibers, which are very flexible and have a high Young modulus, behave as active piezoelectric energy harvesting sources that produce a piezoelectric voltage coefficient up to geff = 3.6 VmN−1 and show a blue intense luminescence band at 325 nm. In this work, the pyroelectric coefficient is reported for the MDABCO-NH4I3 perovskite inserted in electrospun fibers. At the ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition, the embedded nanocrystals display a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 194 × 10−6 Cm−2k−1, within the same order of magnitude as that reported for the state-of-the-art bulk ferroelectric triglycine sulfate (TGS). The perovskite nanocrystals embedded into the polymer fibers remain stable in their piezoelectric output response, and no degradation is caused by oxidation, making the piezoelectric perovskite nanofibers suitable to be used as flexible energy harvesters. Layered TiS2 intercalated with linear alkylamines has recently attracted significant interest as a model compound for flexible n-type thermoelectric applications, showing remarkably high power factors at room temperature. The thermal and, particularly, environmental stability of such materials is, however, a still an open challenge. In this paper, we show that amine-intercalated TiS2 prepared by a simple mechanochemical process is prone to chemical decomposition through sulfur exsolution, and that the presence of molecular oxygen is likely to mediate the decomposition reaction. Through computational analysis of the possible reaction pathways, we propose that Ti-N adducts are formed as a consequence of amine groups substituting for S vacancies on the internal surfaces of the S-Ti-S layers. These findings provide insights for possible future applications of similar hybrid compounds as devices operating in ambient conditions, and suggest isolating them from atmospheric oxygen. Hybrid hydrogels composed of chitosan (CS) have shown great potential in bone tissue engineering and regeneration. The introduction of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) in the biopolymeric matrix has been demonstrated to improve the rheological and biological properties of the hybrid composites. In this work, we have integrated the favourable features of chitosan (CS) and POSS nanoparticles to design new nanocomposites for bone tissue regeneration, focusing our attention on the effect of POSS concentration within the CS matrix (0.5, 1, and 1.5 equivalents in weight of POSS with respect to CS) on the chemical, physical, rheological, and in vitro biological properties of the final composites. The drug release ability of the synthesized hydrogel scaffolds were also investigated using, as the model drug, ketoprofen, that was included in the scaffold during the gelling procedure, showing a more controlled release for the hybrids with respect to CS (86–91% of drug released after two weeks). The results of the in vitro biological tests performed on human fetal osteoblastic cells (hFOB 1.19) culture demonstrated the great biocompatibility of the hybrid materials. The hybrids, at the different POSS concentrations, showed values of cell mortality superimposable with control cells (11.1 vs. 9.8%), thus revealing the CS/POSS hydrogels as possible candidates for bone tissue engineering applications. Researchers who work on manufacturing hybrid composites have significant concerns about holistically optimizing more than one performance characteristic, as in the case of cost and quality optimization. They usually trade off one for the other. Hence, this study employed statistical tools and grey relational analyses (GRA) design to model and optimize the surface roughness and cutting force of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine settings to manufacture halloysite nanotube hybrid composite. In this paper, the GRA was able to address the multiple optimization complications by producing 0.6 mm depth of cut, 1500 rpm spindle speed, and 40 mmpm feed rate as the CNC machine settings for high-quality and low-cost hybrid composite. It was noticed that the mathematical and interaction modeling of surface roughness, cutting force, and grey relational grade (GRG) allowed different CNC machines to manufacture hybrid composites. This can assist researchers and production engineers of CNC machines. Variance analysis and delta statistical characteristics revealed that the depth of a cut is the most significant machine setting, with a contribution of 49.12%. This paper outlines the possible CNC machine settings for high-quality composite manufacturing. In future studies, it is recommended for researchers in the field of CNC machine manufacturing to consider the modeling analysis aspect of the optimization, which comprehensively provides the opportunity for the adjustment of CNC machines for better material performance, which has been lacking in the literature.
