In order to obtain large room-temperature electrocaloric effect (ECE) and wide operation temperature range simultaneously in lead-free ceramics, we proposed designing a relaxor ferroelectric with a Tm (the temperature at which the maximum dielectric permittivity is achieved) near-room temperature and glass addition. Based on this strategy, we designed and fabricated lead-free 0.76NaNbO3–0.24BaTiO3 (NN-24BT) ceramics with 1wt.% BaO–B2O3–SiO2 glass addition, which showed distinct relaxor ferroelectric characteristics with strongly diffused phase transition and a Tm near-room temperature. Based on a direct measurement method, a large ΔT (adiabatic temperature change) of 1.3 K was obtained at room temperature under a high field of 11.0 kV mm−1. Additionally, large ECE can be maintained (>0.6 K@6.1 kV mm−1) over a broad temperature range from 23 °C to 69 °C. Moreover, the ECE displayed excellent cyclic stability with a variation in ΔT below ±7% within 100 test cycles. The comprehensive ECE performance is significantly better than other lead-free ceramics. Our work provides a general and effective approach to designing lead-free, high-performance ECE ceramics, and the approach possesses the potential to be utilized to improve the ECE performance of other lead-free ferroelectric ceramic systems. To achieve the rapid heat dissipation of components in the industrial field, the heat dissipation coating is prepared on the surface, which is conducive to improving the service life of the parts and greatly reducing the industrial costs. In this paper, metallized diamond/Cu composite coatings were fabricated on 1060Al substrate by supersonic laser deposition. The composite coatings were prepared at a nitrogen pressure of 3.0 MPa, a scanning speed of 10 mm/s, and a 1060 nm semiconductor coupled fiber laser with different laser power. The research results show that the laser power affects the interface bonding by affecting the temperature of adiabatic shear instability during particle impact. The metallized diamond forms a good bonding at the interface through the plastic deformation of the Cu matrix. Appropriate parameters ensure that the jet does not affect the subsequent particle deposition and build a good heat transfer bridge to elevate the heat transfer efficiency. The coating prepared at a laser power of 1000 W has the highest thermal diffusion coefficient of 89.3 mm2/s and thermal conductivity of 313.72 W/(m·K), which is 8.92% higher compared to the coating prepared without laser. Experiments with thermal imaging have also demonstrated that the coating at optimal parameter transferred heat faster. Superelastic shape memory alloys with an integration of large elastocaloric response and good cyclability are crucially demanded for the advancement of solid-state elastocaloric cooling technology. In this study, we demonstrate a giant elastocaloric effect with improved cyclic stability in a <001>A textured polycrystalline (Ni50Mn31Ti19)99B1 alloy developed through directional solidification. It is shown that large adiabatic temperature variation (|ΔTad|) values more than 15 K are obtained across the temperature range from 283 K to 373 K. In particular, a giant ΔTad up to −27.2 K is achieved by unloading from a relatively low compressive stress of 412 MPa at 303 K. Moreover, persistent |ΔTad| values exceeding 8.5 K are sustained for over 12,000 cycles, exhibiting a very low attenuation behavior with a rate of 7.5 × 10−5 K per cycle. The enhanced elastocaloric properties observed in the present alloy are ascribed to the microstructure texturing as well as the introduction of a secondary phase due to boron alloying. Continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) is widely acknowledged to occur during hot forming and plays a significant role in microstructure development in alloys with moderate to high stacking fault energy. In this work, the flow stress and CDRX behaviors of the TC18 alloy subjected to hot deformation across a wide range of processing conditions are studied. It is observed that deformation leads to the formation of new low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). Subgrains rotate by absorbing dislocations, resulting in an increase in LAGB misorientation and the transition of some LAGBs into high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). The HAGBs migrate within the material, assimilating the (sub)grain boundaries. Subsequently, an internal state variable (ISV)-based CDRX model is developed, incorporating parameters such as the dislocation density, adiabatic temperature rise, subgrain rotation, LAGB area, HAGB area, and LAGB misorientation angle distribution. The values of the correlation coefficient (R), relative average absolute error (RAAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) between the anticipated true stress and measured stress are 0.989, 6.69%, and 4.78 MPa, respectively. The predicted outcomes demonstrate good agreement with experimental findings. The evolving trends of the subgrain boundary area under various conditions are quantitatively analyzed by assessing the changes in dynamic recovery (DRV)-eliminated dislocations and misorientation angles. Moreover, the ISV-based model accurately predicts the decreases in grain and crystallite sizes with higher strain rates and lower temperatures. Seeking novel high-performance elastocaloric materials with low critical stress plays a crucial role in advancing the development of elastocaloric refrigeration technology. Here, as a first attempt, the elastocaloric effect of TiZrNbAl shape memory alloy at both room temperature and finite temperatures ranging from 245 K to 405 K, is studied systematically. Composition optimization shows that Ti-19Zr-14Nb-1Al (at.%), possessing excellent room-temperature superelasticity with a critical stress of around 100 MPa and a small stress hysteresis of around 70 MPa and outstanding fracture resistance with a compressive strain of 20% and stress of 1.7 GPa, demonstrates a substantial advantage as an elastocaloric refrigerant. At room temperature, a large adiabatic temperature change ( Δ T ad ) of −6.7 K is detected, which is comparable to the highest value reported in the Ti-based alloys. A high elastocaloric cyclic stability, with almost no degradation of Δ T ad after 4000 cycles, is observed. Furthermore, the sizeable elastocaloric effect can be steadily expanded from 255 K to 395 K with a temperature window of as large as 140 K. A maximum Δ T ad of −7.9 K appears at 355 K. The hydration exothermic rate of fly ash concrete is significantly affected by the initial concreting temperature and water-binder ratio. Firstly, the adiabatic temperature rise and temperature rise rate of fly ash concrete at different initial concreting temperatures and water-binder ratios were obtained by a thermal test instrument; then, the effects of initial concreting temperature and water-binder ratio on the hydration kinetic parameters of the NG-I-D hydration process of fly ash concrete were analyzed by the theory of hydration kinetics; lastly, the effects of initial concreting temperature and water-binder ratio on chemically bound water and pore bulk of fly ash concrete during hydration were analyzed by applying a thermogravimetric analyzer and industrial CT scanning techniques. The results showed that the increase in initial concreting temperature and the decrease in water-binder ratio accelerated the rate of temperature rise, and the initial concreting temperature had a more significant effect than the water-binder ratio. During the hydration reaction, the I process was significantly influenced by the initial concreting temperature, and the D process was significantly influenced by the water-binder ratio; the content of bound water increased with the increase in water-binder ratio and age and the decrease in initial concreting temperature. The initial temperature had a significant effect on the growth rate of 1 to 3 days bound water, and the water-binder ratio had a more significant effect on the growth rate of 3 to 7 days bound water. The porosity was positively correlated with the initial concreting temperature and water-binder ratio and decreased with age, but 1 to 3 days was the key period of porosity change. The widespread use of pyrotechnic compositions in time delay detonators is the reason for research aimed at expanding knowledge of the combustion properties of new pyrotechnic mixtures, whose components react with each other in the solid or liquid state. Such a method of combustion would make the rate of combustion independent of the pressure inside the detonator. This paper presents the effect of the parameters of W/CuO mixtures on their properties of combustion. As this composition has not been the subject of previous research and is not described in the literature, the basic parameters, such as the burning rate and the heat of combustion, were determined. In order to determine the reaction mechanism, a thermal analysis was performed, and the combustion products were determined using the XRD technique. Depending on the quantitative composition and density of the mixture, the burning rates were between 4.1–6.0 mm/s and the heat of combustion in the range of 475–835 J/g was measured. The gas-free combustion mode of the chosen mixture was proved using DTA and XRD. The high adiabatic temperature rise and low heat dissipation rate of mass concrete will promote rapid hydration of the cementitious material and rapid consumption of water from the concrete pores, which may significantly accelerate the development of concrete autogenous shrinkage. In this study, the effect of the water-binder ratio on the autogenous shrinkage of C50 concrete mixed with MgO expansion agent (MEA) was explained with respect to mechanical properties, pore structure, degree of hydration, and micromorphology of the concrete based on a variable temperature curing chamber. The results show that the high temperature rise within the mass concrete accelerates the development of early (14 d) autogenous shrinkage of the concrete, and that the smaller the water-binder ratio, the greater the autogenous shrinkage of the concrete. With the addition of 8 wt% MEA, the autogenous shrinkage of concrete can be effectively compensated. The larger the water-binder ratio, the higher the degree of MgO hydration, and in terms of the compensation effect of autogenous shrinkage, the best performance is achieved at a water-binder ratio of 0.36. Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is a good way to prepare ZrB2-ZrC/metal cermet composites. In this work, ZrB2-ZrC/Ni cermet composites with various Ni contents were successfully fabricated by SHS using the Ni-Zr-B4C system. The effects of Ni content and particle size of the B4C powder on the SHS reaction were investigated. The results indicated that with an increase in Ni content, the adiabatic temperature, maximum combustion temperature, ignition delay time, and ceramic particle size in the product all showed a gradually decreasing trend. The SHS products and the ignition of the SHS reactions were significantly dependent on the B4C particle size. The formation mechanism of ZrB2 and ZrC during SHS from the Ni-Zr-B4C system was proposed based on the combustion wave quenching experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The iron and steel industry is a major CO2 emitter and an important subject for the implementation of carbon emission reduction goals and tasks. Due to the complex ore composition and low iron grade, vanadium–bearing titanomagnetite smelting in a blast furnace consumes more coke and emits more carbon than in an ordinary blast furnace. Injecting hydrogen–rich gas into blast furnace can not only partially replace coke, but also reduce the carbon emission. Based on the whole furnace and zonal energy and mass balance of blast furnace, the operation window of the blast furnace smelting vanadium–bearing titanomagnetite is established in this study on the premise that the thermal state of the blast furnace is basically unchanged (raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature). The effects of different injection amounts of hydrogen–rich gases (shale gas, coke oven gas, and hydrogen) on raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature, and the influence of blast temperature and preheating temperature of hydrogen–rich gases on operation window are calculated and analyzed. When describing the relation between the flow stress and plastic strain of a material under a wide range of strain rates and temperatures, the original Johnson–Cook model generally requires a complicated modification, resulting in a loss of simplicity and clear physical interpretation. In this paper, without modification, the original Johnson–Cook model was calibrated separately for the static and dynamic compression of a DNAN-based melt-cast explosive. The stress–strain curves for static and dynamic compression of this explosive were experimentally measured with a universal testing machine and a split-Hopkinson pressure bar, respectively. Based on the stress–strain curves, the flow stress vs. plastic strain data were extracted and used to calibrate the Johnson–Cook model. The calibration process is described. The parameters for the strain term, strain rate term, and temperature term were fitted sequentially. One set of model parameters was not able to fully describe the relationship between flow stress and plastic strain for both the static and dynamic compression of the DNAN-based melt-cast explosive. Two sets of model parameters were separately calibrated and compared for the static and dynamic compression of this explosive. A novel pathway for the magnesiothermic reduction of boron oxide and magnesium dodecaboride (MgB12) in the presence of carbon by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method was proposed that was aimed at the direct preparation of boron carbide nanopowder. The combined utilization of two boron sources, boron oxide and MgB12, allowed tailoring the overall caloric effect of the process, increasing the yield of the target product and lessening the laborious leaching process. In addition, it is an alternative way to utilize magnesium borides, which are inevitable side products at boron production. Multivariate thermodynamic calculations performed in the B2O3-MgB12-Mg-C system allowed estimating equilibrium compositions of the products and deducing the optimum composition of the initial mixture for obtaining B4C. For the latter, the adiabatic temperature (Tad) is 2100 °C, which is theoretically enough for the implementation of the self-propagating reaction. The combustion reaction was shown to be extremely sensitive to the initial mixture composition, external pressure, as well as sample diameter (heat losses). It proceeds in self-oscillatory mode and leads to the product of a layered macrostructure. The combustion product was then consolidated by the spark plasma sintering technique at different conditions. Vickers microhardness was measured, and the wear erosion behavior was examined. The variation in lattice parameters of boron carbide reflected the influence of synthesis, sintering and erosion conditions on the ordering/disordering of the boron carbide structure. In this study, adiabatic temperature rise tests depending on binder type and adiabatic specimen volume were performed, and the maximum adiabatic temperature rises and the reaction factors for each mix proportion were analyzed and suggested. The results indicated that the early strength low heat blended cement mixture had the lowest maximum adiabatic temperature rise (Q∞) and the ternary blended cement mixture had the lowest reaction factor (r). Also, Q and r varied depending on the adiabatic specimen volume even when the tests were conducted with a calorimeter, which satisfies the recommendations for adiabatic conditions. Test results show a correlation: the measurements from the 50 L specimens were consistently higher than those from the 6 L specimens. However, the Q∞ and r values of the 30 L specimen were similar to those of the 50 L specimen. Based on the above correlation, the adiabatic temperature rise of the 50 L specimen could be predicted using the results of the 6 L and 30 L specimens. In this study, a high-density ZrN/ZrSi2 composite reinforced with ZrO2 as an inert phase was synthesized under vacuum starting with a Zr-Si4N3-ZrO2 blend using combustion-synthesis methodology accompanied by compaction. The effects of ZrO2 additions (10–30 wt%) and compression loads (117–327 MPa) on the microstructure, porosity and hardness of the samples were studied. The process was monitored using XRD, SEM, EDS, porosity, density and hardness measurements. Thermodynamic calculations of the effect of ZrO2 addition on the combustion reaction were performed including the calculation of the adiabatic temperatures and the estimation of the fractions of the liquid phase. The addition of up to 20 wt% ZrO2 improved the hardness and reduced the porosity of the samples. Using 20 wt% ZrO2, the sample porosity was reduced to 1.66 vol%, and the sample hardness was improved to 1165 ± 40.5 HV at 234 MPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we design, build, and test one of the very first barocaloric devices. The here presented device can recover the energy generated by an individual's footstep and transform it into barocaloric heating and/or cooling. Accordingly, we present an innovative device that can provide eco-friendly and gas-free heating/cooling. Moreover, we test the device by measuring a new barocaloric organic polymer that exhibits a large adiabatic temperature change of ~2.9 K under the application of 380 bar. First-order isostructural magnetoelastic transition with large magnetization difference and controllable thermal hysteresis are highly desirable in the development of high-performance magnetocaloric materials used for energy-efficient and environmental-friendly magnetic refrigeration. Here, we demonstrate large magnetocaloric effect covering the temperature range from 325 K to 245 K in Laves phase Hf1−xTaxFe2 (x = 0.13, 0.14, 0.15, 0.16) alloys undergoing the magnetoelastic transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) state to ferromagnetic (FM) state on decreasing the temperature. It is shown that with the increase of Ta content, the nature of AFM to FM transition is gradually changed from second-order to first-order. Based on the direct measurements, large reversible adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad) values of 2.7 K and 3.4 K have been achieved under a low magnetic field change of 1.5 T in the Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2 and Hf0.84Ta0.16Fe2 alloys with the first-order magnetoelastic transition, respectively. Such remarkable magnetocaloric response is attributed to the rather low thermal hysteresis upon the transition as these two alloys are close to intermediate composition point of second-order transition converting to first-order transition. Spacecraft have monopropellant thruster systems for attitude control in the vacuum of space. Hydroxylamine nitrate is a green propellant that has high performance and low toxicity. Owing to the high adiabatic decomposition temperature of the hydroxylamine nitrate propellant, it is necessary to develop a catalyst with high thermal stability. We used a platinum barium hexaaluminate catalyst for green propellant hydroxylamine nitrate thrusters. Barium hexaaluminate support was prepared by a wet impregnation method and heat treatment. Platinum, the active material, was coated on catalyst supports. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface was also investigated. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope imagery were used to confirm the formation of barium hexaaluminate. A hydroxylamine nitrate propellant blended with methanol was used for performance evaluation via firing tests of the thruster. The catalytic decomposition performance of each test was evaluated by calculating the characteristic velocity efficiency using the pressure of the chamber at the end of the catalyst bed and the mass flow rate of the propellant. As the catalyst bed was preheated to 350 °C, the characteristic velocity efficiency was 71.9%. Fire exposure of timber leads to charring, surface cracking and timber burnout, shifting the external thermal load deeper into the timber domain. This phenomenon plays its role mainly in situations of longer fire exposure. The majority of current approaches and models assume initial geometry during the whole analysis, leading generally to the overestimation of the insulation effect of the charred layer and to a limited burnout. This paper presents a heat transport model which is supplemented with a moving boundary condition, a criterion for the finite element deactivation and the internal heat source. Comparison with experiments using a constant radiative load testifies that the moving boundary condition becomes important after approximately 10 min of fire exposure and rather leads to a constant charring rate observed in several experiments. Thermal insulation is used for preventing heat losses or heat gains in various applications. In industries that process combustible products, inorganic-materials-based thermal insulation may, if proven sufficiently heat resistant, also provide heat protection in fire incidents. The present study investigated the performance and breakdown temperature of industrial thermal insulation exposed to temperatures up to 1200 °C, i.e., temperatures associated with severe hydrocarbon fires. The thermal insulation properties were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by heating 50 mm cubes in a muffle furnace to temperatures in the range of 600 to 1200 °C with a 30 min holding time. The room temperature thermal conductivity was also recorded after each heat treatment. Upon heating, the mineral-based oil dust binder was released at temperatures in the range of 300 to 500 °C, while the Bakelite binder was released at temperatures in the range of 850 to 960 °C. The 50 mm test cubes experienced increasing levels of sintering in the temperature range of 700 to 1100 °C. At temperatures above 1100 °C, the thermal insulation started degrading significantly. Due to being heat-treated to 1200 °C, the test specimen morphology was similar to a slightly porous rock and the original density of 140 kg/m3 increased to 1700 kg/m3. Similarly, the room temperature thermal conductivity increased from 0.041 to 0.22 W/m∙K. The DSC analysis confirmed an endothermic peak at about 1200 °C, indicating melting, which explained the increase in density and thermal conductivity. Recently, 350 kW/m2 has been set as a test target heat flux, i.e., corresponding to an adiabatic temperature of 1200 °C. If a thin layer of thermally robust insulation is placed at the heat-exposed side, the studied thermal insulation may provide significant passive fire protection, even when exposed to heat fluxes up to 350 kW/m2. To address sustainability issues by facilitating the use of high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete in industry, this paper investigates the early age hydration properties of HVFA binders in concrete and the correlation between hydration properties and compressive strengths of the cement pastes. A new method of calculating the chemically bound water of HVFA binders was used and validated. Fly ash (FA) types used in this study were sourced from Indonesia and Australia for comparison. The water to binder (w/b) ratio was 0.4 and FA replacement levels were 40%, 50% and 60% by weight. Isothermal calorimetry tests were conducted to study the heat of hydration which was further converted to the adiabatic temperature rise. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to explore the chemically bound water (WB) of the binders. The results showed that Australian FA pastes had higher heat of hydration, adiabatic temperature rise, WB and compressive strength compared to Indonesian FA pastes. The new method of calculating chemically bound water can be successfully applied to HVFA binders. Linear correlation could be found between the WB and compressive strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
