To address the bottleneck associated with the slow ion transport kinetics observed in the porosity of activated carbons (ACs), hierarchically structured pore sizes were introduced on ACs used for electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) to promote ion transport kinetics under fast-rate charge–discharge conditions. In this study, we synthesized cellophane noodle-derived activated carbon (CNAC) with tailored porous structures, including the pore volume fraction of macro/meso/micropores and the specific surface area. The porous structures were effectively modulated by adjusting the KOH concentration during chemical activation. In addition, optimized KOH activation in CNAC modulated the chemical bonding ratios of C=O, pyrrolic-N, and graphitic-N. Given the hierarchically designed porous structure and chemical bonding states, the CNAC fabricated with optimized KOH activation exhibited a superior ultrafast rate capability in EDLCs (132.0 F/g at 10 A/g). Renewable energy markets, particularly wind energy, have experienced remarkable growth, predominantly driven by the urgent need for decarbonization in the face of accelerating global warming. As the wind energy sector expands and turbines increase in size, there is a growing demand for advanced composite materials that offer both high strength and low density. Among these materials, graphene stands out for its excellent mechanical properties and low density. Incorporating graphene reinforcement into wind turbine blades has the potential to enhance generation efficiency and reduce the construction costs of foundation structures. As a pilot study of graphene reinforcement on wind turbine blades, this study aims to investigate the variations of mechanical characteristics and weights between traditional fiberglass-based blades and those reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs). A finite element model of the SNL 61.5 m horizontal wind turbine blade is used and validated by comparing the analysis results with those presented in the existing literature. Case studies are conducted to explore the effects of graphene reinforcement on wind turbine blades in terms of mechanical characteristics, such as free vibration, bending, and torsional deformation. Furthermore, the masses and fabrication costs are compared among fiberglass, CNTRC, and GPLRC-based wind turbine blades. Finally, the results obtained from this study demonstrate the effectiveness of graphene reinforcement on wind turbine blades in terms of both their mechanical performance and weight reduction. Precast concrete (PC) structures have many advantages, but their use in the construction of middle- to high-rise buildings is limited. The construction of PC structures requires skills in various operations such as transportation, assembly, lifting, and structural soundness. In particular, regarding the seismic design of PC structures, it is necessary to clearly evaluate whether they have the same structural performance and usability as integral RC (cast-in-place) structures. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to investigate whether PC members can achieve a seismic performance equivalent to that of RC members in beam–column joints, which are representative moment-resisting frames. The main variables are the two types of structural systems (intermediate and special moment-resisting frames) and the design flexural strength ratio of the columns and beams. The experimental and analytical results showed that the seismic performance of the PC specimens was equivalent to that of the RC specimens in terms of strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and strain distribution, except for the specimen with splice sleeve bond failure of the column reinforcement (poor filling of the internal mortar). In addition, the I series satisfied the present emulation evaluation criteria for special moment-resisting frames of PC structures, confirming the possibility of applying intermediate moment-resisting frames. The global desire to improve the performance of road pavements and move towards a sustainable transportation system has immensely encouraged the usage of fibers in asphalt paving materials. In this study, glass fibers trademarked as ESGFIBER produced by the ESG Industry company Limited from Daejeon, Korea were added in dense-graded asphalt mix. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects that fibers have on volumetric properties, mechanical properties, and long-term performance of asphalt concrete mixes. ESGFIBER were mixed together with aggregates and asphalt binder in asphalt mix and five different asphalt mixes with different dosage of fibers were evaluated in this study. The Marshall mix design method was used for designing all asphalt mixes, and laboratory tests indirect tensile strength test, deformation strength test and Hamburg wheel tracking test were conducted to evaluate moisture susceptibility, fatigue cracking behavior and rutting resistance of asphalt concrete mixes. The results showed that when ESGFIBER were added in asphalt mix moisture susceptibility, fatigue cracking and rutting resistance were both improved. The usage of ESGFIBER in asphalt concrete mixes can be very beneficial since the mechanical and long-term performance were improved upon the addition of fibers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The repair of underwater concrete structures is usually difficult work, requiring specialized materials and installation systems. This paper presents a carbon-textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) grouting system for underwater repair of concrete structures. One multi-purpose grout and two types of underwater grouts were considered in this study, and the bond performance between the substrate and grout was evaluated by a bi-surface shear test with cubic specimens. The bond strength of the repair material is greatly affected by the casting and curing conditions. When the multi-purpose grout is used, the average bond strength of the specimens cast and cured in dry conditions is only 22% of the specimens cast and cured in underwater conditions. On the other hand, the maximum difference in bond strength is, at most, 15.8% when non-dispersive, anti-washout grouts are used. Two types of installation methods were proposed and four full-scale RC slab specimens were repaired with the TRC grouting method, two for each installation method. Regardless of the installation method, the load levels that causes concrete cracking, steel yield, and the failure of specimens repaired with the TRC grouting system are at least 37.5%, 16.6%, and 21.7% greater than those of the unrepaired specimen, respectively. The test results further indicate that the influence of the grouting materials on the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the specimens repaired with the TRC grouting system is insignificant, and the maximum difference is, at most, 4%. This paper presents a new textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) installation method for strengthening structurally deficient or damaged reinforced concrete (RC) structures with grouting. In this study, cementitious grout was used as a matrix for the TRC system. TRC coupon specimens with different lap-splice lengths were tested under tension to determine the minimum textile lap-splice length. The minimum lap-splice length of the sand-coated textile was evaluated as 150 mm. The performance of the TRC-strengthened RC slabs with the proposed installation method. The lap-spliced textile was experimentally validated by a flexural failure test. Five RC slabs were strengthened by one ply of sand-coated carbon textile grid with and without the lap-splicing and 20 mm-thick cementitious grout and were tested in flexure. Among the TRC-strengthened RC slab specimens, two specimens were re-strengthened RC slabs with the TRC system. The TRC strengthened slab, for which the lap-splice length of the textile was 50% smaller than the minimum lap-splice length, failed at the load level of steel yield. On the other hand, the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the RC slabs strengthened by the TRC system with textile lap-splicing decreased by at least 6% relative to that without textile lap-splicing. Furthermore, the results of a flexural test for the TRC re-strengthened slabs indicate that the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the TRC re-strengthened slabs is almost the same as that of an undamaged slab strengthened with the TRC system. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag on the structural performance of precast concrete beams, evaluating the flexural, shear and bonding performance by using the replacement ratio of the ground granulated blast furnace slag as a variable. The design strength of the concrete was set at 45 MPa in consideration of the characteristics of precast concrete products, and the replacement ratio of the ground granulated blast furnace slag to replace cement was 30 to 70%. The experimental results showed that all specimens had similar behavioral characteristics regardless of the replacement ratio of the ground granulated blast furnace slag. Comparison of the prediction results obtained by ACI 318-19 and EC 2 showed that the mean flexural strength and shear strength were higher than 1.19 and 1.43, respectively, and the mean bond strength was 1.57, satisfying the required performance. Therefore, the experimental results showed that in using the ground granulated blast furnace slag as an admixture for precast concrete, the cement replacement ratio may be increased up to 70% without causing any problems in securing the structural performance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of deep-learning-based segmentation of the area covered by fresh and young concrete in the images of construction sites. The RGB images of construction sites under various actual situations were used as an input into several types of convolutional neural network (CNN)–based segmentation models, which were trained using training image sets. Various ranges of threshold values were applied for the classification, and their accuracy and recall capacity were quantified. The trained models could segment the concrete area overall although they were not able to judge the difference between concrete of different ages as professionals can. By increasing the threshold values for the softmax classifier, the cases of incorrect prediction as concrete became almost zero, while some areas of concrete became segmented as not concrete. A textile reinforced concrete (TRC) system has been widely used for repair and strengthening of deteriorated reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This paper proposes an accelerated on-site installation method of a TRC system by grouting to strengthen deteriorated RC structures. Four RC slabs were strengthened with one ply of carbon textile grid and 20 mm-thick cementitious grout. The TRC strengthened slab specimens were tested under flexure and the test results were compared with those of an unstrengthened specimen and theoretical solutions. Furthermore, the TRC strengthened specimens experienced longer plastic deformation after steel yield than the unstrengthened specimen. The TRC strengthened specimens exhibited many fine cracks and finally failed by rupture of the textile. Therefore, TRC system with the proposed installation method can effectively be used for strengthening of deteriorated RC structural elements. Construction with precast or prefabricated elements requires the connecting of structural joints. This study presents an accelerated construction method to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) slab-type elements in flexure using precast lap-spliced textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) panels. The objectives of this study are to identify the tensile behavior of a TRC system with lap-spliced textile, and to experimentally validate the performance of the proposed connecting method by flexural failure test for the concrete slabs strengthened by TRC panels with lap-spliced textile. Twenty-one coupon specimens were tested in tension with two different matrix systems and three different lap splice lengths. The influence of the lap splice length and matrix properties on the tensile performance of the TRC system was significant. Five full-scale RC slabs were strengthened by the precast TRC panels with and without the lap splice, and was tested in flexure. The results of the failure test for the strengthened specimens showed that the ultimate load of the strengthened specimen with the TRC panel increased by a maximum of 24%, compared to that of the unstrengthened specimen. Moreover, the failure-tested specimens were re-strengthened by a new TRC panel system and tested again in flexure. The objective of the re-strengthening of the damaged RC slabs by the TRC panel is to investigate whether the yielded steel reinforcement can be replaced by the TRC panel. This study was conducted to evaluate the flexural performance of hollow core slabs (HCS) incorporating the effect of surface roughness. The HCSs are suitable for long span structures due to reduced self-weight. The specimens were HCS with topping concrete and the variables were cross sectional height and surface roughness. The tests were conducted on simply supported beams under four-point loads. The results showed that specimens with interface roughness applied in the lengthwise direction of members exhibited ductile flexural behavior up to peak load than those with interface roughness applied in the member width direction. The paper analyzes the issue of the reduction of load capacity in fiber cement board during a fire. Fiber cement boards were put under the influence of fire by using a large-scale facade model. Such a model is a reliable source of knowledge about the behavior of facade cladding and the way fire spreads. One technical solution for external walls—a ventilated facade—is gaining popularity and is used more and more often. However, the problem of the destruction during a fire of a range of different materials used in external facade cladding is insufficiently recognized. For this study, the authors used fiber cement boards as the facade cladding. Fiber cement boards are fiber-reinforced composite materials, mainly used for facade cladding, but also used as roof cladding, drywall, drywall ceiling and floorboards. This paper analyzes the effect of fire temperatures on facade cladding using a large-scale facade model. Samples were taken from external facade cladding materials that were mounted on the model at specific locations above the combustion chamber. Subsequently, three-point bending flexural tests were performed and the effects of temperature and the integrals of temperature and time functions on the samples were evaluated. The three-point bending flexural test was chosen because it is a universal method for assessing fiber cement boards, cited in Standard EN 12467. Although carbon textile reinforcement widely used to replace the steel reinforcing bars but the bonding strength of carbon textile is generally much smaller than that of common steel bars. This study examines the strengthening effect of concrete slab-type elements strengthened in flexure by carbon textile reinforcement according to the surface coating of textile and the amount of reinforcement. The effect of the surface coating of textile on the bond strength was evaluated through a direct pullout test with four different sizes of coating material. The surface coated specimens developed bond strength approximately twice that of the uncoated specimen. The flexural strengthening effect with respect to the amount of reinforcement was investigated by a series of flexural failure tests on full-scale reinforced concrete (RC) slab specimens strengthened by textile reinforced concrete (TRC) system. The flexural failure test results revealed that the TRC system-strengthened specimens develop load-carrying capacity that is improved to at least 150% compared to the non-strengthened specimen. The strengthening performance was not significantly influenced by the textile coating and was not proportional to the amount of reinforcement when this amount was increased, owing to the change in the failure mode. This study aims to provide a mitigation strategy for reducing the economic and environmental impacts of carbon fiber wastes deriving from automotive industry. Recycling and reuse in the construction industry is proposed, according to an industrial symbiosis within a circular economy perspective. Specifically, the process consists of repurposing carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) scraps/waste into new cement-matrix composites, for which the resulting benefits, in terms of mechanical and environmental performance, are herein described. An experimental campaign, starting with a specific heat treatment of CFRP sheets and an accurate dimensional distribution analysis of the short carbon fibers, is presented. The influence of the fiber content and length on both the workability and the mechanical performance of cement-based carbon fiber reinforced mortars is also evaluated. A reduced amount of either sand or cement (up to 8% and 12.8% in volume, respectively) is also considered in the mix design of the fiber reinforced mortars and derives from the substitution of the sand or binder with an equivalent volume of CFRP fibers. The results show a satisfactory increase in compressive and flexural strength in the range 10–18% for the samples characterized by a volume fraction of fibers of approximately 4% and having a 2–5 mm length. Finally, a life cycle assessment (LCA, 14040/14044) was carried out to quantify the environmental burden reductions associated with the implementation of the proposed symbiotic scheme. This paper investigates the effect of polymer modifiers (re-dispersible powder, multifunctional additives, methylhydroxyethylcellulose) on the rheological behavior of emulsions, saturated of calcium hydrosilicates to simulate a hydrating cement structure. The subjects of the study were modified emulsions which had varied concentrations of each additive and they were examined comparatively to a base emulsion. Tests were performed with a CR-rheometer ("Himpribor-1", Tula, Russia) applying the Searle measuring principle at various shear rates to characterize viscosity properties. The performance of modified mixtures within the operating period was analyzed by using two parameters—effective viscosity (η) and the proportion of structural failure (|m|). The test results showed that the most important factor influencing rheological characteristics is the addition of methylhydroxyethylcellulose additive—the higher additive amount in the emulsion, the higher the viscosity. Furthermore it was noted in the work that adding olefin sulfonate sodium salt causes reduced viscosities as well as lower shear moduli. If ethylhydroxyethylcellulose and ethylene vinyl acetate additives are used in the same mixture together, the rate of structural failure |m| can be relatively similar and low regardless of whether the mixture has large or small viscosity values. In accordance with the principles of sustainable development, environmentally friendly, low-emission, and energy-intensive materials and technologies, as well as waste management, should be used. Concrete production is responsible for significant energy consumption and CO2 production; therefore, it is necessary to look for new solutions in which components are replaced by other materials, preferably recycled. A positive way is to use glass waste. In order to determine the effect of a significant glass cullet content on the properties of concrete, glass powder was used as a filler and 100% glass aggregate. The cement–glass composite has low tensile strength and brittle failure. In order to improve tensile strength, the effects of adding polypropylene fibres on the mechanical properties of the composite were investigated. With the addition of 300, 600, 900, 1200, and 1500 g/m3 of fibres, which corresponds to 0.0625%, 0.1250%, 0.1875%, 0.2500%, and 0.3125% of cement mass, respectively, flexural strength increased compared with the base sample by 4.1%, 8.2%, 14.3%, 20.4%, and 26.5%, respectively, while the increase in splitting strength was 35%, 45%, 115%, 135%, and 185%, respectively. Moreover, with the addition of fibres, a decrease in slump by 25.9%, 39.7%, 48.3%, 56.9%, and 65.5%, respectively, compared with the reference specimen was determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research results presented in this article were obtained by joint scientific research on creatingcement materials with reduced impedance. It is known that functional additives added to impart electrically conductive properties have a negative impact on physical and mechanical characteristics of the material. This study suggests using the multiwall carbon nanotubes in the amount of 7% from binder mass as a functional additive. The results obtained prove that the addition of this amount of the modifier does not lead to a significant decrease of strength characteristics. Calcium nitrate in the amount of 1–7% was added in order to level the strength loss and to ensure the effective stable electrical conductivity. The multifunctionality of using this salt has been proven, which is manifested in the anti-frost and anticorrosive effects as well in enhancement of electrical conductivity. The optimal composition of the additive with 7% of carbon nanotubes and 3% of calcium nitrate ensures a reduced electrical impedance of cement matrix. The electrical conductivity was 2440 Ohm, while the decrease of strength properties was within 10% in comparison tothe control sample. The nature of changes in the microstructure were studied to determine the influence of complex modifications that showed significant changes in the morphology of the hydration products. The optimum electrical characteristics of cementitious materials are provided due to the uniform distribution of carbon nanotubes and the formation of a network of interconnected micropores filled with the solution of calcium nitrate that provides additional and stable electrical conductivity over time. An experimental case study was carried out to investigate the shear performance of reinforced concrete beams with small circular openings under a cyclic anti-symmetric bending moment. The openings were strengthened by using a newly developed reinforcement continuously bent into rectangular and octagonal shapes, which was convenient for installation and effective for crack control. The presence of web opening reinforcement, the reinforcing method, and the web opening spacing were employed as main variables in the design of five specimens. The cyclic performance of all specimens was evaluated in terms of failure mode, crack pattern, strength and stiffness degradation, and strain distribution. Experimental results were discussed to assess the suitability of the proposed web opening reinforcement in RC web opening beams. It was confirmed that the proposed web opening reinforcement exhibited outstanding crack control and served as a shear resistance component in place of the concrete cross-section lost due to web openings. Finally, the shear strength of all specimens, obtained from the cyclic loading tests, were compared with those obtained from the equation proposed by Mansur (1998) and the Architectural Institute of Japan standard 2010. This paper deals with the long-term bonding and tensile strengths of textile reinforced mortar (TRM) exposed to harsh environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term bonding and tensile strengths of carbon TRM by an accelerated aging method. Moisture, high temperature, and freezing–thaw cycles were considered to simulate harsh environmental conditions. Grid-type textiles were surface coated to improve the bond strength with the mortar matrix. A total of 130 TRM specimens for the bonding test were fabricated and conditioned for a prolonged time up to 180 days at varying moisture conditions and temperatures. The long-term bonding strength of TRM was evaluated by a series of bonding tests. On the other hand, a total of 96 TRM specimens were fabricated and conditioned at freezing–thaw conditions and elevated temperature. The long-term tensile strength of TRM was evaluated by a series of direct tensile tests. The results of the bonding test indicated that TRM was significantly degraded by moisture. On the other hand, the influence of the freezing–thaw conditions and high temperature on the tensile strength of the TRM was insignificant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the hardening process of alkali-activated material (AAM) mortar using calcium sulfoalumiante (CSA) expansive additive (CSA EA), which accelerates the initial reactivity of AAMs, and subsequent changes in ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). After the AAM mortar was mixed with three different contents of CSA EA, the setting and modulus of elasticity of the mortar at one day of age, which represent curing steps, were measured. In addition, UPV was used to analyze each curing step. The initial and final setting times of the AAM mortar could be predicted by analyzing the UPV results measured for 14 h. In addition, the dynamic modulus of elasticity calculated using the UPV results for 24 h showed a tendency similar to that of the static modulus of elasticity. The test results showed that the use of CSA EA accelerated the setting of the AAM mortar and increased the modulus of elasticity, and these results could be inferred using UPV. Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) has widely been used for strengthening work for deteriorated reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The structural strengthening often requires accelerated construction with the aid of precast or prefabricated elements. This study presents an innovative method to strengthen an RC slab-type element in flexure using a precast panel made of carbon TRC. A total of five RC slabs were fabricated to examine the flexural strengthening effect. Two of them were strengthened with the precast panel and grouting material and another set of two slabs was additionally strengthened by tensile steel reinforcement. The full-scale slab specimens were tested by a three-point bending test and the test results were compared with the theoretical solutions. The results revealed that the ultimate load of the specimens strengthened with the TRC panel increased by at least 1.5 times compared to that of the unstrengthened specimen. This paper deals with flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs with a carbon textile reinforced concrete (TRC) system. The surface coating treatment was applied to a carbon grid-type textile to increase the bond strength. Short fibers were incorporated into the matrix to mitigate the formation of shrinkage-induced cracks. The tensile properties of the TRC system were evaluated by a direct tensile test with a dumbbell-type grip method. The tensile test results indicated that the effect of the surface coating treatment of the textile on the bonding behavior of the textile within the TRC system was significant. Furthermore, the incorporation of short fibers in the matrix was effective to mitigate shrinkage-induced crack formation and to improve the tensile properties of the TRC system. Six full-scale slab specimens were strengthened with the TRC system and, subsequently, failure tested. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the strengthened slabs was compared with that of an unstrengthened slab as well as the theoretical solutions. The failure test results indicated that the stiffness and the ultimate flexural capacity of the strengthened slab were at least 112% and 165% greater, respectively, than that of the unstrengthened slab. In this study, a calcium sulfoaluminate-based expansive additive (0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% by the mass of the binder) was added to compensate for the shrinkage of alkali-activated material (AAM) mortar. Modulus of elasticity curves based on the ACI 209 model were derived for the AAM mortar mixed with the additive by measuring the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. Moreover, autogenous shrinkage and total shrinkage were measured for 150 days, and drying shrinkage was calculated by excluding autogenous shrinkage from total shrinkage. For the autogenous and drying shrinkage of AAM mortar, shrinkage curves by age were obtained by deriving material constants using the exponential function model. Finally, shrinkage stress was calculated using the modulus of elasticity of the AAM mortar and the curves obtained using the shrinkage model. The results showed that the calcium sulfoaluminate-based expansive additive had an excellent compensation effect on the drying shrinkage of AAM mortar, but the effect was observed only at early ages when the modulus of elasticity was low. From a long-term perspective, the shrinkage compensation effect was low when the modulus of elasticity was high, and thus, shrinkage stress could not be reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of carbonation on the abrasion resistance of alkali-activated slag (AAS) was investigated. Various activator sets were selected for synthesizing AAS specimens, and the compressive strength was measured before and after carbonation. The abrasion resistance of the specimens was measured in accordance with the ASTM C944 test method. The relationship between the mass loss caused by abrasion and compressive strength was analyzed to understand the effect of matrix strength on abrasion resistance. Test results showed that the decrease in compressive strength of AAS specimens by carbonation reduced their abrasion resistance. In addition, the abrasion resistance of AAS before and after carbonation was sensitively influenced by activator type.
