Rail fasteners are among the key components of ballasted track of high-speed railway due to their functionality of fixing rails to sleepers. The failure of rail fastening system hinders the transmission of train loads to underlying track substructure and therefore endangers the operation safety and longevity of ballasted track. This paper first established a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model of the train-ballasted track-subgrade coupling system by integrating multibody dynamics (MBD) and finite element method (FEM). Numerical simulations were then performed to investigate the effects of different patterns of rail fastener failure (i.e., consecutive single-side, alternate single-side, and consecutive double-side) on critical dynamic responses of track structures, train running stability, and operation safety. The results show that the resulting influences of different patterns of rail fastener failure descend in the order of consecutive double-side failure, consecutive single-side failure, and alternate single-side failure. As the number of failed fasteners increases, the range where dynamic responses of track structures are influenced extends, and the failure of two consecutive single-side fasteners exerts a similar influence as that of four alternate single-side fasteners. The failure of single-side fasteners affects dynamic responses of the intact side of track structures relatively insignificantly. The influence of rail fastener failure on track structures exhibits hysteresis, thus indicating that special attention needs to be paid to locations behind failed fasteners during track inspection and maintenance. The occurrence of the failure of two or more consecutive fasteners demands timely maintenance work in order to prevent aggravated deterioration of track structures. Based on the density functional theory (DFT), the electronic properties of O-doped pure and sulfur vacancy-defect monolayer WS2 are investigated by using the first-principles method. For the O-doped pure monolayer WS2, four sizes (2 × 2 × 1, 3 × 3 × 1, 4 × 4 × 1 and 5 × 5 × 1) of supercell are discussed to probe the effects of O doping concentration on the electronic structure. For the 2 × 2 × 1 supercell with 12.5% O doping concentration, the band gap of O-doped pure WS2 is reduced by 8.9% displaying an indirect band gap. The band gaps in 3 × 3 × 1 and 4 × 4 × 1 supercells are both opened to some extent, respectively, for 5.55% and 3.13% O doping concentrations, while the band gap in 5 × 5 × 1 supercell with 2.0% O doping concentration is quite close to that of the pure monolayer WS2. Then, two typical point defects, including sulfur single-vacancy (VS) and sulfur divacancy (V2S), are introduced to probe the influences of O doping on the electronic properties of WS2 monolayers. The observations from DFT calculations show that O doping can broaden the band gap of monolayer WS2 with VS defect to a certain degree, but weaken the band gap of monolayer WS2 with V2S defect. Doping O element into either pure or sulfur vacancy-defect monolayer WS2 cannot change their band gaps significantly, however, it still can be regarded as a potential method to slightly tune the electronic properties of monolayer WS2. The CRTS I type double-block ballastless track (CRTS I TDBBT) has the advantages of convenient construction and low cost, but it has low crack resistance and the temperature field distribution of the railway on the bridge is uneven and frequently changes, so it is necessary to study the mechanical properties of the CRTS I TDBBT under the load of a temperature field. The temperature field model of the CRTS I TDBBT on the bridge is established by finite element software, the real-time temperature field of the track bed slab is brought into the coupled model as a load, and the variation laws of the temperature stress of the CRTS I TDBBT under different schemes are compared. The temperature gradient in the CRTS I TDBBT track bed slab has the largest fluctuation range, and the positive and negative temperature gradient range can reach 93.34 °C. For the temperature longitudinal stress around the sleeper block of the track bed slab, the edge is the largest; the temperature longitudinal stress is reduced by at most 5.27% after the anti-cracking diagonal bars are added. When the expansion joint is added, the temperature stress can be reduced by up to 80.29%. The fluctuation range of the temperature gradient of the track bed is basically consistent with the fluctuation range of the local air temperature. The huge temperature difference leads to the occurrence of cracks in the track structure, and cracks are more likely to occur at the corners of the sleeper block. In this paper, an inverse method is proposed for measuring the elastoplastic properties of metallic materials using a spherical indentation experiment. In the new method, the elastoplastic parameters are correlated with sub-space coordinates of indentation imprints using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and inverse identification of material properties is solved using a statistical Bayesian framework. The advantage of the method is that model parameters in the numerical optimization process are treated as the stochastic variables, and potential uncertainties can be considered. The posterior results obtained from the measuring method can provide valuable probabilistic information of the estimated elastoplastic properties. The proposed method is verified by the application on 2099-T83 Al-Li alloys. Results indicate that posterior distribution of material parameters exhibits more than one peak region when indentation load is not large enough. In addition, using the weighting imprints under different loads can facilitate the uniqueness in identification of elastoplastic parameters. The influence of the weighting coefficient on posterior identification results is analyzed. The elastoplastic properties identified by indentation and tensile experiment show good agreement. The quality of compaction of unbound aggregate materials with permeable gradation plays a vital role in their field performance; however, there are currently few unanimously accepted techniques or quality control criteria available for ensuring adequate compaction of such materials in either laboratory or field applications. This paper presented testing results of a laboratory gyratory compaction study where the combinations of gyratory parameters were properly designed using the orthogonal array theory. Innovative real-time particle motion sensors were employed to record particle movement characteristics during the compaction process and provide a meso-scale explanation about compaction mechanisms. Particle abrasion and breakage were also quantified from particle shape digitized from the three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner before and after compaction. The optimal combination of gyratory parameters that yields the best compaction performance was determined from the orthogonal testing results with the relative importance of major influencing parameters ranked accordingly. Meso-scale particle movement at the upper center and center side positions of the specimen are promising indicators of compaction quality. The gyratory compaction process can be consistently divided into three distinct stages according to both macro-scale performance indicators and meso-scale particle movement characteristics. A statistically significant bi-linear relationship was found to exist between relative breakage index and maximum abrasion depth, whereas the quality of compaction and the extent of particle breakage appear to be positively correlated, thus necessitating the cost-effective balance between them. Atomic simulations give a good explanation of the changes in the physical properties of a material. In this work, the tension behaviors of nanopolycrystalline Cu–Ta alloys are investigated through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and the influences of several important factors on the mechanical properties of the materials are studied. Firstly, nanopolycrystalline Cu–Ta (10 at %) alloy models with sub-10 nm grains are established by using the method of replacing the grain boundary atoms. Then, the effects of temperature, pressure, and strain rate on the mechanical properties of nanopolycrystalline Cu–Ta alloy are studied, and the elastic modulus and flow strength are obtained. The observations from the simulation results show that the elastic modulus and flow strength increase with the increasing of grain size for sub-10 nm nanopolycrystalline Cu–Ta alloys, and the elastic modulus increases firstly and then stabilizes as the strain rate increases. Finally, according to the evolution of dislocations and twin crystals, the plastic deformation mechanism of nanopolycrystalline Cu–Ta alloy during the stretching process is discussed in depth. The single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS2) nanosheets have been experimentally discovered to exist in two different polymorphs, which exhibit different electrical properties, metallic or semiconducting. Herein, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of nanoindentation and uniaxial compression were conducted to investigate the phase transition of SLMoS2 nanosheets. Typical load–deflection curves, stress–strain curves, and local atomic structures were obtained. The loading force decreases sharply and then increases again at a critical deflection under the nanoindentation, which is inferred to the phase transition. In addition to the layer thickness, some related bond lengths and bond angles were also found to suddenly change as the phase transition occurs. A bell-like hollow, so-called residual deformation, was found to form, mainly due to the lattice distortion around the waist of the bell. The effect of indenter size on the residual hollow was also analyzed. Under the uniaxial compression along the armchair direction, a different phase transition, a uniformly quadrilateral structure, was observed when the strain is greater than 27.7%. The quadrilateral structure was found to be stable and exhibit metallic conductivity in view of the first-principle calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
