This article aims to explore the impact of the punch structure (number of grooves, area ratio of grooves, depth of grooves and flaring angle) on the loading, torque and metal flow during the rotary extrusion (RE) process via finite element simulation (FEM) software. In order to further verify the simulation results, physical experiments were carried out and the microstructure of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy after RE deformation was characterized and analyzed. The FEM results indicated that increasing the groove number will increase the amount of shear deformation and promote the metal at the bottom of the punch to flow rapidly to the cylinder wall. The increase in the groove depth would continue to reduce the forming load and increase the strain. However, if the groove depth exceeded 6 mm, an excessive flow-velocity difference would be formed, resulting in the formation of folding defects. The time of metal flow from the bottom of the punch to the cylinder wall would be shortened with the increase in flaring angle. Therefore, a groove number of 8, an area ratio of 64.49%, a groove depth of 6 mm and a flaring angle ranging from 7° to 9° were the optimal parameters of the punch structure to form the Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr cylindrical parts via the RE technique. In addition, the cylinder parts could be formed with good quality according to the optimized FEM results. In this study, a Mg-9Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy was subjected, after solution treatment, to hot compression deformation at different temperatures (350 °C, 400 °C and 450 °C) and different strain rates (0.001 s−1, 0.01 s−1, 0.1 s−1 and 0.5 s−1) on a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator. The evolution of the stress–strain curves under different conditions was compared. The changes in microstructure caused by the different deformation parameters and the change law of the long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phase during compression were observed and analyzed by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that with the increase in the deformation temperature and the decrease in the strain rate, the degree of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) gradually increased, and the morphology of the phase also changed through, for example, twist fracture. The continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) mechanisms activated during the thermal deformation process can effectively refine the grains and weaken the texture in the alloy. The thermal deformation behaviour of Mg-9Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr alloy at temperatures of 360–480 °C, strain rates of 0.001–1 s−1 and a maximum deformation degree of 60% was investigated in uniaxial hot compression experiments on a Gleeble 3800 thermomechanical simulator. A constitutive equation suitable for plastic deformation was constructed from the Arrhenius equation. The experimental results indicate that due to work hardening, the flow stress of the alloy rapidly reached peak stress with increased strain in the initial deformation stage and then began to decrease and stabilize, indicating that the deformation behaviour of the alloy conformed to steady-state rheological characteristics. The average deformation activation energy of this alloy was Q = 223.334 kJ·mol−1. Moreover, a processing map based on material dynamic modelling was established, and the law describing the influence of the machining parameters on deformation was obtained. The experimental results indicate that the effects of deformation temperature, strain rate and strain magnitude on the peak dissipation efficiency factor and instability range were highly significant. With the increase in the strain variable, the flow instability range increased gradually, but the coefficient of the peak power dissipation rate decreased gradually. This study proposed a rotary back extrusion (RBE) process for an open punch, which is used to produce high-performance 7075 aluminum alloy cup-shaped piece. The RBE experiment was carried out on the Gleeble-3500 testing machine at 400 °C and compared with the conventional back extrusion (CBE). The microstructure was analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and DEFORM-3D simulation software. The results shown that compared with CBE, RBE can significantly increase the equivalent strain value and deformation uniformity of 7075 aluminum alloy cup-shape pieces. RBE deformation increases the accumulated strain of the piece, and the rotation of the die causes the piece to produce shear strain, which increases the overall strain of the cup-shape piece. The proportion of dynamic recrystallization increases, and the grain refinement was obvious. The micro-hardness value of the RBE sample is higher than that of the CBE sample, which could be the result of grain refinement strengthening. Rotating backward extrusion (RBE) is one of severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods used to produce cylindrical components with a very large strain by a single pass. In this study, the microstructure and texture evolution in the different regions of Mg-12Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloys via RBE process were investigated by using optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The results showed that the cup-shaped sample formed by RBE process exhibited typical gradient microstructure expanding from its inner wall to outer wall along the radial direction (RD). The average grain size of the RBEed sample decreased when the radius decreased from the edge region to the center region along the RD, which was attributed to the different strains and strain rates in the different regions. It also could be observed that the center region showed highest deformation and the edge region exhibited the lowest deformation in the RBEed sample along the RD. In addition, the grain refinement mechanisms of the experimental alloy containing long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases after RBE with 100 N were continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and particle stimulated nucleation (PSN). There is a new long-period stacking ordered structure in Mg–RE–Zn magnesium alloys, namely the LPSO phase, which can effectively improve the yield strength, elongation, and corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. According to different types of Mg–RE–Zn alloy systems, two transformation modes are involved in the heat treatment transformation process. The first is the alloy without LPSO phase in the as-cast alloy, and the MgxRE phase changes to 14H-LPSO phase. The second is the alloy containing LPSO phase in the as-cast state, and the 14H-LPSO phase is obtained by the transformations of 6H, 18R, and 24R. The effects of different solution parameters on the second phase of Mg–9Gd–2Y–2Zn–0.5Zr alloy were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The precipitation mechanism of 14H-LPSO phase during solution treatment was further clarified. At a solution time of 13 h, the grain size increased rapidly initially and then decreased slightly with increasing solution temperature. The analysis of the volume fraction of the second phase and lattice constant showed that Gd and Y elements in the alloy precipitated from the matrix and formed 14H-LPSO phase after solution treatment at 490 °C for 13 h. At this time, the hardness of the alloy reached the maximum of 74.6 HV. After solution treatment at 500 °C for 13 h, the solid solution degree of the alloy increases, and the grain size and hardness of the alloy remain basically unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quasi-static and low cycle fatigue tests of extruded 7075 Al alloy (Φ200 mm) were investigated in three directions: the extrusion direction (ED), the radial direction (RD), and 45° with ED (45°). Grain morphology analysis, texture measurement, and fatigue fracture characterization were conducted to discuss the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. The experimental results showed that the ED specimen had higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties, which were mainly attributed to the following three causes. First, the grain boundaries (GBs) had an obvious effect on the crack growth. The number of GBs in the three directions was different due to the shape of the grains elongated along the ED. Second, the sharp <111> texture and the small Schmidt factor along the ED explained the higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the ED specimens. Third, fatigue fracture observation showed that the ED specimen had a narrow fatigue striation spacing, which indicated that the plastic deformation of the ED specimen was the smallest in each cycle. In addition, two fatigue prediction models were established to predict the LCF life of extruded 7075 Al alloy, based on the life response behavior of the three directions under different strains. Reciprocating Upsetting-Extrusion (RUE) deformation process can significantly refine the grains size and weaken the basal plane texture by applying a large cumulative strain to the alloy, which is of great significance to weaken the anisotropy of magnesium (Mg) alloys and increase the application range. In this paper, the Mg-8.27Gd-3.18Y-0.43Zr (wt %) alloy was subjected to isothermal multi-passes RUE. The microstructure and texture evolution, crystal orientation-dependent deformation mechanism of the alloy after deformation were investigated. The results clearly show that with the increase of RUE process, the grains are significantly refined through continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) mechanisms, the uniformity of the microstructure is improved, and the texture intensity is reduced. At the same time, a large number of particle phases are dynamically precipitated during the deformation process, promoting grain refinement by the particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) mechanism. The typical [10-10] fiber texture is produced after one pass due to the basal plane of the deformed grains with a relatively high proportion is gradually parallel to the ED during extrusion process. However, the texture concentration is reduced compared with the traditional extrusion deformation, indicating that the upsetting deformation has a certain delay effect on the subsequent extrusion texture generation. As a drug delivery system (DDS), traditional mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) suffer from bioaccumulation in vivo and premature drug release in systemic circulation due to low degradation rate and lack of protective gatekeeper. Herein, we developed a safe and intelligent DDS with characteristics of pH-responsive biodegradation and controlled drug release based on mesoporous silica composite nanoparticles (MSCNs) capped with ZnO quantum dots (ZnO QDs). Acidic degradable MSCNs were successfully synthesized by doping Ca2+ and PO43− into the MSNs' framework. The in vitro doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) release was inhibited at neutral pH 7.4 but triggered significantly at pH 5.0 due to the dissociation of ZnO caps. The internalization behavior and cytotoxicity of 4T1 cells indicated MSCNs-ZnO could efficiently deliver DOX into the cells with significant antitumor activity. This work is to study the microstructure and texture evolution of AZ31 alloy prepared by cyclic expansion extrusion with an asymmetrical extrusion cavity (CEE-AEC) at different deformation temperatures. The result shows AZ31 alloy undergoes continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) during CEE-AEC processing. At the initial stage of deformation, AZ31 alloys exhibit similar bimodal microstructure of coarse deformed grains surrounded by fine DRXed grains. As the passes increase, the cumulative strain increases, and the coarse grains of all samples are almost replaced by fine equiaxed grains. The average grain sizes and the basal texture intensities of the deformed samples increase as the deformation temperature increases. In addition, due to the existence of an asymmetrical cavity, as the passes increase, the basal textures of all samples are deflected with maximum intensities increase, and even an unusual bimodal texture is formed, resulting in a soft orientation that is easy to basal slip. The rotating backward extrusion (RBE) process, as a new severe plastic deformation (SPD) process, is based on conventional backward extrusion and rotation, which meets the requirement of modern industrial development with its high performance and production efficiency. However, there is little research on the microstructure evolution and texture modification of the RBE process. Thus, in this study, the effect of different rotating revolutions, e.g., n = 5, n = 10, and n = 50, on the microstructure and texture development for the RBE process based on the AZ80 magnesium (Mg) alloy were investigated at 653 K. The results disclose that the rotating revolution is an influencing processing parameter on the deformation of the RBE process. The grain refining ability is enhanced with the increase of the rotating revolutions, and the minimum grain size of the cup bottom, shearing zone, and cup wall can reach to 16.7 μm, 15.6 μm, and 13.0 μm, respectively, under the condition of n = 50. Furthermore, with the increase in the rotating revolutions, the microstructure of the alloy becomes more uniform and the proportion of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is also increased. The maximum DRX fractions of the sample for the cup bottom and cup wall are 95.4% and 86.8%, respectively, at n = 50. The DRX mechanism of the RBE process is determined by the continuous DRX and discontinuous DRX. In addition, the texture can be significant weakened during the RBE process, especially at the cup bottom, where the maximum pole intensity can be reduced from 17.6 at n = 10 to 6.5 at n = 50, which can be attributed to the higher proportion of new DRXed grains whose orientations are more random compared with the deformed grains. Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy during annular channel angular extrusion (350 °C) and heat treatment with varying parameters were investigated, respectively. The results showed that dynamic recrystallization of Mg grains was developed and the dendritic eutectic β-Mg17Al12 phases formed during the solidification were broken into small β-phase particles after hot extrusion. Moreover, a weak texture with two dominant peaks formed owing to the significant grain refinement and the enhanced activation of pyramidal slip at relative high temperature. The tension tests showed that both the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the extruded alloy were dramatically improved owing to the joint strengthening effect of fine grain and β-phase particles as compared with the homogenized sample. The solution treatment achieved the good plasticity of the alloy resulting from the dissolution of β-phases and the development of more equiaxed grains, while the direct-aging process led to poor alloy elongation as a result of residual eutectic β-phases. After solution and aging treatment, simultaneous bonding strength and plasticity of the alloy were achieved, as a consequence of dissolution of coarse eutectic β-phases and heterogeneous precipitation of a large quantity of newly formed β-phases with both the morphologies of continuous and discontinuous precipitates. Mg–13Gd–4Y–2Zn–0.5Zr alloy was subjected to compression–torsion deformation at 450 °C with a strain rate of 0.001–0.5 s−1 using a Gleeble 3500 torsion unit. The effects of compression–torsion deformation on the microstructure and texture were studied, and the results showed that with the decrease of strain rate, the texture strength decreased, the number of dynamic precipitated particles increased, the degree of recrystallization increased, and the dynamic recrystallization mechanism changed from a continuous dynamic recrystallization mechanism to a continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization mechanism. Along the direction of increasing radius, the degree of dynamic recrystallized grain (DRX) increased, the number of dynamic precipitated particles increased, and the texture strength slightly increased. The effects of repetitive upsetting extrusion under different starting temperatures on the microstructure and texture of GWZK124 alloy were investigated. The results clearly showed that the particles and second phases induced dynamic recrystallization (DRX), which can be explained by the particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) mechanism. It was shown that grain refinement during repetitive upsetting extrusion (RUE) is dominated by a complicated combination of continuous dynamic recrystallization and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. The RUEed alloys under different starting temperatures exhibited a bimodal microstructure comprising fine DRXed grains with weak texture and coarse deformed grains with strong texture. Annular channel angular extrusion has been recently developed as a new single-pass severe plastic deformation method suitable for producing large size cup-shaped parts from cylindrical billets. In this study, the novel technology was successfully applied to commercial AZ80 Mg alloy at 300 °C, and microstructure, texture evolution, and mechanical properties were investigated. Due to severe shear deformation, the initial microstructure, including the coarse grains and large eutectic β-phases, was greatly refined. The strong basal texture formed during the initial deformation stage was modified into a weak tilted dynamic texture. During the deformation process, fine β-particles separated from eutectic phases effectively hindered the grain boundary migration and rotation, enhancing the grain refinement and texture weakening. More than 63% of the microhardness increase was achieved in this extruded part. Also, tensile tests showed the yield strength and elongation in both directions (transverse and longitudinal) of extruded part were improved more than 2.5 times, and the ultimate tensile strength was improved more than 2 times, compared to the initial material state. The improved material properties were mainly attributed to microstructure (grain and phase) refinement and texture weakening. An ideally shaped charge warhead is an effective weapon against armored targets. The use of the gathering energy effect generated by the explosion drives the liner to form a shaped charge jet, which can penetrate the armored target. Existing shaped charge warheads often use a metal liner. Herein, we discuss the characteristics of polymer liners. To study the characteristics of the expansive jet formed by the polymer liner, three polymer materials with different properties—polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), nylon (PA), and polycarbonate (PC)—were selected. Using the smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method and the AUTODYN finite element software, the expansive jet formation by the polymer liners was simulated and verified by experimental data. The polymer jets of the different materials exhibit a certain degree of expansivity; however, due to differences in the material properties, the expansive diameter of the jet and the degree of head compaction differed. The expansive diameter of the PA jet was the smallest, and that of the PTFE jet was larger than that of the PA jet, but with a smaller compactness. In this work, commercial AISI 304 stainless steel rods were subjected to cyclic forward/reverse torsion (CFRT) treatments at low-speed and high-speed torsion at room temperature. Microstructures in the core and surface layers of the CFRT-treated samples were systematically characterized. Results show that the CFRT treatment can introduce martensite phase on the surface of the rods via strain-induced martensitic transformation. High-speed twisting is more effective in inducing martensite in the surface layer compared to low-speed twisting. During the stretching process, the overall strain-hardening behavior of the gradient material is related to the content of its gradient defects. Higher gradient martensite content results in a higher surface hardness of the material, but less overall tensile properties. Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr Mg alloys show excellent performance in high-end manufacturing due to its strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. However, the hot deformation and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviors of Mg-13.5Gd-3.2Y-2.3Zn-0.5Zr were not studied. For this article, hot compression behavior of homogenized high rare-earth (RE) content Mg-13.5Gd-3.2Y-2.3Zn-0.5Zr (wt%) alloy was investigated by using the Gleeble-3500D thermo-simulation test machine under the temperature of 350–500 °C and the strain rate of 0.001–1 s−1. It was found that the high flow stress corresponded to the low temperature and high strain rate, which showed DRX steady state curve during the hot compression. The hot deformation average activation was 263.17 kJ/mol, which was obtained by the analysis of the hyperbolic constitutive equation and the Zener-Hollomon parameter. From observation of the microstructure, it was found that kink deformation of long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase was one of the important coordination mechanisms of hot deformation at low temperature. The processing map with the strain of 0.5 was established under the basis of dynamic material model (DMM); it described two high power dissipation domains: one appearing in the temperature range of 370–440 °C and the strain rate range of 0.001–0.006 s−1, the other appearing in the temperature range of 465–500 °C and strain rate range of 0.001–0.05 s−1, in which dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mainly occurred. Repetitive upsetting extrusion (RUE) was applied to the as-homogenized Mg-12.0Gd-4.5Y-2Zn-0.4Zr (wt %) alloy at 773 K. The microstructure evolution of the alloy during RUE was investigated. The results indicated that almost all Mg5(Gd,Y,Zn) phases and fine-lamellar long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phases were dissolved into the matrix after homogenization treatment at 793 K for 16 h. After one RUE pass, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurred. During subsequent RUE passes (from one to three passes), average volume fractions of DRXed grains increased from 43.9% to 65.8%, and that of fine-lamellar and block-shaped LPSO phases gradually decreased. All samples exhibited a typical bimodal microstructure consisting of some initial grains containing fine-lamellar LPSO phases, but consisting mostly of fine-DRXed grains with a mean grain size of 6 μm. Because of an increase in the accumulated strains, the coarse grains were substituted with fine-DRXed grains, the grains were gradually refined, and the microstructure distribution became more homogeneous.
