This in vitro study investigated how varying magnifications (5×, 10×, 20×, and 50×) using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) influence the measured surface roughness parameters, R a /S a and R z /S z , of various materials with two surface treatments. Cylindrical specimens (d ≈ 8 mm, h ≈ 3 mm, n = 10) from titanium, zirconia, glass-ceramic, denture base material, and composite underwent diamond treatment (80 μm; wet) and polishing (#4000; wet; Tegramin-25, Struers, G). The surface roughness parameters (R a /S a , R z /S z ) were measured with a CLSM (VK-100, Keyence, J) at 5×, 10×, 20×, and 50× magnifications. Line roughness (R a /R z ) was measured along a 1000 μm distance in three parallel lines, while area roughness (S a /S z ) was evaluated over a 2500 μm × 1900 μm area. The statistical analysis included ANOVA, the Bonferroni post hoc test, and Pearson correlation (SPSS 29, IBM, USA; α = 0.05). R a /S a and R z /S z showed significant differences ( p ≤ 0.001, ANOVA) across magnifications, with values decreasing as magnification increased, highest at 5× and lowest at 50×. Titanium, zirconia, and glass-ceramic showed significant measured roughness values from 5× to 50×. Denture base material and composite had lower measured roughness values, especially after polishing. Line and area roughness varied significantly, indicating that magnification affects measured values. Standardizing magnifications is essential to ensure comparability between studies. A 50× magnification captures more detailed profile information while masking larger defects.

3D printing as an additive manufacturing method has proven to be of great interest for the computerized production of oral splints. Various parameters must be taken into consideration when assessing the durability of oral splints in a wet environment, such as the mouth. The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the wear behavior and water sorption of two 3D-printed splint materials depending on their building orientation and post-processing parameters. The parameters considered included the type of post-polymerization and the type of cleaning utilized after printing. The average wear depth was between -421.8 μm and -667.5 μm. A significant influence of the building orientation ( p < 0.001) but not of the material ( p = 0.810), cleaning ( p = 0.933), or post-polymerization ( p = 0.237) on wear was demonstrated. The water sorption ranged between 13.8 μg/mm 3 and 30.3 μg/mm 3 , featuring a significant dependency on material and building orientation but not on cleaning ( p = 0.826) or post-polymerization ( p = 0.343). Material and fabrication methods should be carefully selected, because the type of material and building orientation affect the wear and water sorption of additively manufactured splint materials.

The microbiological behavior of dental polymer materials is crucial to secure the clinical success of dental restorations. Here, the manufacturing process and the machining can play a decisive role. This study investigated the bacterial adhesion on dental polymers as a function of manufacturing techniques (additive/subtractive) and different polishing protocols. Specimens were made from polyaryletherketone (PEEK, PEKK, and AKP), resin-based CAD/CAM materials (composite and PMMA), and printed methacrylate (MA)-based materials. Surface roughness (R z ; R a ) was determined using a laser scanning microscope, and SFE/contact angles were measured using the sessile drop method. After salivary pellicle formation, in vitro biofilm formation was initiated by exposing the specimens to suspensions of Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ) and Streptococcus sanguinis ( S. sanguinis ). Adherent bacteria were quantified using a fluorometric assay. One-way ANOVA analysis found significant influences ( p < 0.001) for the individual parameters (treatment and material) and their combinations for both types of bacteria. Stronger polishing led to significantly ( p < 0.001) less adhesion of S. sanguinis (Pearson correlation PC = -0.240) and S. mutans (PC = -0.206). A highly significant ( p = 0.010, PC = 0.135) correlation between S. sanguinis adhesion and R z was identified. Post hoc analysis revealed significant higher bacterial adhesion for vertically printed MA specimens compared to horizontally printed specimens. Furthermore, significant higher adhesion of S. sanguinis on pressed PEEK was revealed comparing to the other manufacturing methods (milling, injection molding, and 3D printing). The milled PAEK samples showed similar bacterial adhesion. In general, the resin-based materials, composites, and PAEKs showed different bacterial adhesion. Fabrication methods were shown to play a critical role; the pressed PEEK showed the highest initial accumulations. Horizontal DLP fabrication reduced bacterial adhesion. Roughness < 10 µm or polishing appear to be essential for reducing bacterial adhesion.

In the study the influence of different dental technical tools on the surface temperature and phase composition of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) made of yttria-partially stabilized zirconia polycrystals (3Y-/4Y-/5Y-PSZ) was investigated. FDPs were fabricated by using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). The FDPs were treated with a contra-angle handpiece equipped with different burs and polishers. The resulting surface temperatures were measured with a thermographic camera, and the resulting phase transformations were investigated by X-ray diffraction and quantified by Rietveld refinement. Processing with burs resulted in no phase transformation, but a preferred orientation shift. Using coarse polisher induced a phase transformation to the rhombohedral phase, while fine polishers produced no relevant phase transformations and no preferred orientation shift. Compared to the monoclinic phase (ca. 9% theoretical volume increase), which is associated with low-temperature degradation (LTD), the rhombohedral phase is much more voluminous (ca. 15% theoretical volume increase) and distorted and, therefore, has a greater degradation potential.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of cross-contamination in dental tray adhesives with reusable brush systems., Methods: Four dental tray adhesives with different disinfectant components were examined for risk as a potential transmission medium for Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Streptococcus oralis , and Candida albicans . Bacterial and fungal strains were mixed with artificial saliva. The contaminated saliva was intentionally added to tray adhesive liquid samples. At baseline and up to 60 min, 100 microliters of each sample were collected and cultivated aerobically on Columbia and Sabouraud agar for 24 or 48 h, respectively., Results: At baseline, contamination with Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans could be identified in three out of four adhesives. In the subsequent samples, low counts of up to 20 colony-forming units per milliliter could be observed for Staphylococcus aureus . All other strains did not form colonies at baseline or subsequently. Adhesives with isopropanol or ethyl acetate as disinfectant additives were most effective in preventing contamination, while adhesives with hydrogen chloride or acetone as a disinfectant additive were the least effective., Conclusion: Within 15 min, the tested adhesives appeared to be sufficiently bactericidal and fungicidal against all microorganisms tested.

Background: The influence of typical manufacturing regimes for producing fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) from yttria partly-stabilized zirconia polycrystals (3Y/4Y/5Y-TZP) on the phase composition is quantified., Methods: Fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) were designed using a CAD process and machined from different Y-TZP blanks from two manufacturers differing in yttria contents. Subsequent to sintering, the FDPs were glaze fired and air-blasted using alumina particles. Phase composition was determined with X-ray diffraction and quantified with Rietveld refinement., Results: The blanks from VITA Zahnfabrik (VITA YZ HT, VITA YZ ST, VITA YZ XT) and Dental Direct (DD Bio ZX 2 , DD cube ONE, DD cube X 2 ) featured a rhombohedral portion with rather small crystallites and a small monoclinic portion for 3Y/4Y-TZPs, which increased after machining and disappeared after sintering. Glaze firing and air-blasting with alumina particles had no significant influence on the phase composition., Conclusion: The phase history of dental zirconia is revealed, which may have implications on further processing and aging of the FDP (e.g. low temperature degradation) in mouth.

The effect of dental technical tools on the phase composition and roughness of 3/4/5 yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (3y-/4y-/5y-TZP) for application in prosthetic dentistry was investigated. Additionally, the X-ray diffraction methods of Garvie-Nicholson and Rietveld were compared in a dental restoration context. Seven plates from two manufacturers, each fabricated from commercially available zirconia (3/4/5 mol%) for application as dental restorative material, were stressed by different dental technical tools used for grinding and polishing, as well as by chewing simulation and thermocycling. All specimens were examined via laser microscopy (surface roughness) and X-ray diffraction (DIN EN ISO 13356 and the Rietveld method). As a result, the monoclinic phase fraction was halved by grinding for the 3y-TZP and transformed entirely into one of the tetragonal phases by polishing/chewing for all specimens. The tetragonal phase t is preferred for an yttria content of 3 mol% and phase t″ for 5 mol%. Mechanical stress, such as polishing or grinding, does not trigger low-temperature degradation (LTD), but it fosters a phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal under certain conditions. This may increase the translucency and deteriorate the mechanical properties to some extent.

The performance of dental resin-based composites (RBCs) heavily depends on the characteristic properties of the individual filler fraction. As specific information regarding the properties of the filler fraction is often missing, the current study aims to characterize the filler fractions of several contemporary computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) RBCs from a material science point of view. The filler fractions of seven commercially available CAD/CAM RBCs featuring different translucency variants were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Micro-X-ray Computed Tomography (µXCT), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD). All CAD/CAM RBCs investigated included midifill hybrid type filler fractions, and the size of the individual particles was clearly larger than the individual specifications of the manufacturer. The fillers in Shofu Block HC featured a sphericity of ≈0.8, while it was <0.7 in all other RBCs. All RBCs featured only X-ray amorphous phases. However, in Lava Ultimate, zircon crystals with low crystallinity were detected. In some CAD/CAM RBCs, inhomogeneities (X-ray opaque fillers or pores) with a size <80 µm were identified, but the effects were minor in relation to the total volume (<0.01 vol.%). The characteristic parameters of the filler fraction in RBCs are essential for the interpretation of the individual material's mechanical and optical properties.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical properties of tooth-colored computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials for the fabrication of a 3-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) in the same clinical scenario. A 53-year-old female patient was supplied with a 3-unit FDP to replace a second premolar in the upper jaw. Restorations were fabricated from 3 mol%, 4 mol%, and 5 mol% yttrium oxide zirconia, zirconia with translucency gradient, indirect composite resin, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK). Milling time, weight, and radiopacity were investigated. Esthetics were examined following the US Public Health Service criteria (USPHS). The milling time for zirconia was twice as high as for the indirect composite resin, PEEK, or PEKK. The latter materials had a weight of 2 g each, while zirconia restorations yielded 5 g. Zirconia presented intense radiopacity. PEEK and PEKK required veneering and an opaquer was applied to the PEKK framework. All FDPs showed acceptable esthetics. PEEK and PEKK restorations were featured by a grayish shimmering. A variety of CAD/CAM materials are available to fabricate 3-unit FDPs with esthetically acceptable results. In the esthetic zone, PEEK and PEKK require veneering and an opaquer might be applied. Milling time, weight, and radiopacity were relatively high for zirconia FDPs.

Completely digital workflows for the fabrication of implant-supported removable restorations are not yet common in clinical dental practice. The aim of the current case report is to illustrate a reliable and comfortable workflow that reasonably merges conventional and digital workflows for the CAD/CAM-fabrication of implant-supported overdentures. The 53-year old patient was supplied with a digitally processed complete denture in the upper jaw and, simultaneously, with an overdenture supported by four interforaminal implants in the lower jaw. The overdenture included a completely digitally processed and manufactured alloy framework that had been fabricated by selective laser sintering. The case report indicates that digital manufacturing processes for extensive and complex removable restorations are possible. However, as it is currently not yet possible to digitally obtain functional impressions, future developments and innovations might focus on that issue.
