The surface topography of polyurethane films is modified by thermal imprinting of micrometer-sized structures. A subsequent deposition of thin metallic layers produces materials with controllable visual appearance. Depending on the prepared surface structures on the used polyurethane films the resulting optical properties of the metallic layers can exhibit significant changes. A continuous variation from specular to diffuse reflection can be produced. In addition, anisotropic structures can be used to create a varying optical impression along different angles of observation. Such layered structures might be applicable for functional coatings acting as positioning system for rotatable objects in combination with a tailored appearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
