This paper presents a method for unsupervised classification of entities by a group of agents with unknown domains and levels of expertise. In contrast to the existing methods based on majority voting ("wisdom of the crowd") and their extensions by expectation-maximization procedures, the suggested method first determines the levels of the agents' expertise and then weights their opinions by their expertise level. In particular, we assume that agents will have relatively closer classifications in their field of expertise. Therefore, the expert agents are recognized by using a weighted Hamming distance between their classifications, and then the final classification of the group is determined from the agents' classifications by expectation-maximization techniques, with preference to the recognized experts. The algorithm was verified and tested on simulated and real-world datasets and benchmarked against known existing algorithms. We show that such a method reduces incorrect classifications and effectively solves the problem of unsupervised collaborative classification under uncertainty, while outperforming other known methods. This paper provides a real application of a popular swarm-intelligence optimisation method. The aim is to analyse the efficiency of various settings of the marine predator algorithm (MPA). Four crucial numerical parameters of the MPA are statistically analysed to propose the most efficient setting for solving engineering problems. Besides population size, particle velocity parameter P, Lévy flight parameter β , and fish aggregating device (FAD) probabilities are studied. Finally, 193 various settings, including fixed values and dynamic changes of the MPA parameters, are experimentally compared when solving 13 engineering problems. Standard statistical approaches are employed to highlight significant differences in various MPA settings. The setting of two MPA parameters (P, FADs) significantly influences MPA performance. Three newly proposed MPA settings outperform the original variant significantly. The best results provide the MPA variant with the dynamic linear change of P from 0.5 to 0. These parameters influence the velocity of prey and predator individuals in all three stages of the MPA search process. Decreasing the value of P showed that decreasing the velocity of individuals during the search provides good performance. Further, lower efficiency of the MPA with higher FAD values was detected. It means that more occasional use of fish aggregating devices (FADs) can increase the solvability of engineering problems. Recycling tasks are the most effective method for reducing waste generation, protecting the environment, and boosting the overall national economy. The productivity and effectiveness of the recycling process are strongly dependent on the cleanliness and precision of processed primary sources. However, recycling operations are often labor intensive, and computer vision and deep learning (DL) techniques aid in automatically detecting and classifying trash types during recycling chores. Due to the dimensional challenge posed by pre-trained CNN networks, the scientific community has developed numerous techniques inspired by biology, swarm intelligence theory, physics, and mathematical rules. This research applies a new meta-heuristic algorithm called the artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) to solving the waste classification problem based on feature selection. However, the performance of the AHA is barely satisfactory; it may be stuck in optimal local regions or have a slow convergence. To overcome these limitations, this paper develops two improved versions of the AHA called the AHA-ROBL and the AHA-OBL. These two versions enhance the exploitation stage by using random opposition-based learning (ROBL) and opposition-based learning (OBL) to prevent local optima and accelerate the convergence. The main purpose of this paper is to apply the AHA-ROBL and AHA-OBL to select the relevant deep features provided by two pre-trained models of CNN (VGG19 & ResNet20) to recognize a waste classification. The TrashNet dataset is used to verify the performance of the two proposed approaches (the AHA-ROBL and AHA-OBL). The effectiveness of the suggested methods (the AHA-ROBL and AHA-OBL) is compared with that of 12 modern and competitive optimizers, namely the artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA), Harris hawks optimizer (HHO), Salp swarm algorithm (SSA), aquila optimizer (AO), Henry gas solubility optimizer (HGSO), particle swarm optimizer (PSO), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA), manta ray foraging optimizer (MRFO), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), marine predators algorithm (MPA), and rescue optimization algorithm (SAR). A fair evaluation of the proposed algorithms' performance is achieved using the same dataset. The performance analysis of the two proposed algorithms is applied in terms of different measures. The experimental results confirm the two proposed algorithms' superiority over other comparative algorithms. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms play a crucial role in optimization problems. However, the traditional identification methods have the following problems: (1) difficulties in nonlinear data processing; (2) high error rates caused by local stagnation; and (3) low classification rates resulting from premature convergence. This paper proposed a variant based on the gray wolf optimization algorithm (GWO) with chaotic disturbance, candidate migration, and attacking mechanisms, naming it the enhanced gray wolf optimizer (EGWO), to solve the problem of premature convergence and local stagnation. The performance of the EGWO was tested on IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions, and the results of the EGWO were compared with the performance of three GWO variants, five traditional and popular algorithms, and six recent algorithms. In addition, EGWO optimized the weights and biases of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and proposed an EGWO-MLP disease identification model; the model was tested on IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions, and EGWO-MLP was verified by UCI dataset including Tic-Tac-Toe, Heart, XOR, and Balloon datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed EGWO-MLP model can effectively avoid local optimization problems and premature convergence and provide a quasi-optimal solution for the optimization problem. In this paper, we study swarm intelligence computation for constrained optimization problems and propose a new hybrid PSO-DE algorithm based on feasibility rules. Establishing individual feasibility rules as a way to determine whether the position of an individual satisfies the constraint or violates the degree of the constraint, which will determine the choice of the individual optimal position and the global optimal position in the particle population. First, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to act on the top 50% of individuals with higher degree of constraint violation to update their velocity and position. Second, Differential Evolution (DE) is applied to act on the individual optimal position of each individual to form a new population. The current individual optimal position and the global optimal position are updated using the feasibility rules, thus forming a hybrid PSO-DE intelligent algorithm. Finally, the performance of the PSO-DE algorithm is tested with 12 benchmark functions of constrained optimization and 57 engineering optimization problems, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithm has good accuracy, effectiveness and robustness. Optimization problems are prevalent in almost all areas and hence optimization algorithms are crucial for a myriad of real-world applications. Deterministic optimization algorithms tend to be computationally costly and time-consuming. Hence, heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms are more favoured as they provide near-optimal solutions in an acceptable amount of time. Swarm intelligence algorithms are being increasingly used for optimization problems owing to their simplicity and good performance. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is one which is inspired by the swarming behaviours of dragonflies, and it has been proven to have a superior performance than other algorithms in multiple applications. Hence, it is worth considering its application to the traveling salesman problem which is a predominant discrete optimization problem. The original DA is only suitable for solving continuous optimization problems and, although there is a binary version of the algorithm, it is not easily adapted for solving discrete optimization problems like TSP. We have previously proposed a discrete adapted DA algorithm suitable for TSP. However, it has low effectiveness, and it has not been used for large TSP problems. In this paper, we propose an optimized discrete adapted DA by using the steepest ascent hill climbing algorithm as a local search. The algorithm is applied to a TSP problem modelling a package delivery system in the Kuala Lumpur area and to benchmark TSP problems, and it is found to have a higher effectiveness than the discrete adapted DA and some other swarm intelligence algorithms. The Teaching Learning-Based Algorithm (TLBA) is a powerful and effective optimization approach. TLBA mimics the teaching-learning process in a classroom, where TLBA's iterative computing process is separated into two phases, unlike standard evolutionary algorithms and swarm intelligence algorithms, and each phase conducts an iterative learning operation. Advanced technologies of Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) enable greater active and reactive power regulation in these networks. Various objectives are addressed for optimal energy management, with the goal of attaining economic and technical advantages by decreasing overall production fuel costs and transmission power losses in AC-DC transmission networks. In this paper, the TLBA is applied for various sorts of nonlinear and multimodal functioning of hybrid alternating current (AC) and multi-terminal direct current (DC) power grids. The proposed TLBA is evaluated on modified IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus AC-DC networks and compared to other published methods in the literature. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed TLBA has great effectiveness and robustness indices over the others. Economically, the reduction percentages of 13.84 and 21.94% are achieved for the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus test systems when the fuel costs are minimized. Technically, significant improvement in the transmission power losses with reduction 28.01% and 69.83%, are found for the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus test system compared to the initial case. Nevertheless, TLBA has faster convergence, higher quality for the final optimal solution, and more power for escaping from convergence to local optima compared to other published methods in the literature. Hybridized algorithms are commonly employed to improve the performance of any existing method. However, an optimal learning algorithm composed of evolutionary and swarm intelligence can radically improve the quality of the final neuron states and has not received creative attention yet. Considering this issue, this paper presents a novel metaheuristics algorithm combined with several objectives—introduced as the Hybrid Election Algorithm (HEA)—with great results in solving optimization and combinatorial problems over a binary search space. The core and underpinning ideas of this proposed HEA are inspired by socio-political phenomena, consisting of creative and powerful mechanisms to achieve the optimal result. A non-systematic logical structure can find a better phenomenon in the study of logic programming. In this regard, a non-systematic structure known as Random k Satisfiability (RANkSAT) with higher-order is hosted here to overcome the interpretability and dissimilarity compared to a systematic, logical structure in a Discrete Hopfield Neural Network (DHNN). The novelty of this study is to introduce a new multi-objective Hybrid Election Algorithm that achieves the highest fitness value and can boost the storage capacity of DHNN along with a diversified logical structure embedded with RANkSAT representation. To attain such goals, the proposed algorithm tested four different types of algorithms, such as evolutionary types (Genetic Algorithm (GA)), swarm intelligence types (Artificial Bee Colony algorithm), population-based (traditional Election Algorithm (EA)) and the Exhaustive Search (ES) model. To check the performance of the proposed HEA model, several performance metrics, such as training–testing, energy, similarity analysis and statistical analysis, such as the Friedman test with convergence analysis, have been examined and analyzed. The paper introduces a new approach to enhance optimization algorithms when solving the piecewise linearization problem of a given function. Eight swarm intelligence algorithms were selected to be experimentally compared. The problem is represented by the calculation of the distance between the original function and the estimation from the piecewise linear function. Here, the piecewise linearization of 2D functions is studied. Each of the employed swarm intelligence algorithms is enhanced by a newly proposed automatic detection of the number of piecewise linear parts that determine the discretization points to calculate the distance between the original and piecewise linear function. The original algorithms and their enhanced variants are compared on several examples of piecewise linearization problems. The results show that the enhanced approach performs sufficiently better when it creates a very promising approximation of functions. This paper introduces a strategy to enrich swarm intelligence algorithms with the preferences of the Decision Maker (DM) represented in an ordinal classifier based on interval outranking. Ordinal classification is used to bias the search toward the Region of Interest (RoI), the privileged zone of the Pareto frontier containing the most satisfactory solutions according to the DM's preferences. We applied this hybridising strategy to two swarm intelligence algorithms, i.e., Multi-objective Grey Wolf Optimisation and Indicator-based Multi-objective Ant Colony Optimisation for continuous domains. The resulting hybrid algorithms were called GWO-InClass and ACO-InClass. To validate our strategy, we conducted experiments on the DTLZ problems, the most widely studied test suit in the framework of multi-objective optimisation. According to the results, our approach is suitable when many objective functions are treated. This paper introduces a novel population-based bio-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Blood Coagulation Algorithm (BCA). BCA derives inspiration from the process of blood coagulation in the human body. The underlying concepts and ideas behind the proposed algorithm are the cooperative behavior of thrombocytes and their intelligent strategy of clot formation. These behaviors are modeled and utilized to underscore intensification and diversification in a given search space. A comparison with various state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms over a test suite of 23 renowned benchmark functions reflects the efficiency of BCA. An extensive investigation is conducted to analyze the performance, convergence behavior and computational complexity of BCA. The comparative study and statistical test analysis demonstrate that BCA offers very competitive and statistically significant results compared to other eminent meta-heuristic algorithms. Experimental results also show the consistent performance of BCA in high dimensional search spaces. Swarm intelligence techniques have been created to respond to theoretical and practical global optimization problems. This paper puts forward an enhanced version of the firefly algorithm that corrects the acknowledged drawbacks of the original method, by an explicit exploration mechanism and a chaotic local search strategy. The resulting augmented approach was theoretically tested on two sets of bound-constrained benchmark functions from the CEC suites and practically validated for automatically selecting the optimal dropout rate for the regularization of deep neural networks. Despite their successful applications in a wide spectrum of different fields, one important problem that deep learning algorithms face is overfitting. The traditional way of preventing overfitting is to apply regularization; the first option in this sense is the choice of an adequate value for the dropout parameter. In order to demonstrate its ability in finding an optimal dropout rate, the boosted version of the firefly algorithm has been validated for the deep learning subfield of convolutional neural networks, with respect to five standard benchmark datasets for image processing: MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, Semeion, USPS and CIFAR-10. The performance of the proposed approach in both types of experiments was compared with other recent state-of-the-art methods. To prove that there are significant improvements in results, statistical tests were conducted. Protocols for clustering and routing in the Internet of Things ecosystem should consider minimizing power consumption. Existing approaches to cluster-based routing issues in the Internet of Things environment often face the challenge of uneven power consumption. This study created a clustering method utilising swarm intelligence to obtain a more even distribution of cluster heads. In this work, a firefly optimization method and an aquila optimizer algorithm are devised to select the intermediate and cluster head nodes required for routing in accordance with the NP-Hard nature of clustered routing. The effectiveness of this hybrid clustering and routing approach has been evaluated concerning the following metrics: remaining energy, mean distances, number of hops, and node balance. For assessing Internet of things platforms, metrics like network throughput and the number of the living node are crucial, as these systems rely on battery-operated equipment to regularly capture environment data and transmit specimens to a base station. The system of nonlinear equations (SNLEs) is one of the eminent problems in science and engineering, and it is still open to research. A new hybrid intelligent algorithm is presented in this research to solve SNLEs. It is a composite of the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) and chaotic search technique (CST). The proposed methodology is named chaotic salp swarm algorithm (CSSA). CSSA is designed as an optimization process, whereby feasible and infeasible solutions are updated to move closer to the optimum value. The use of this hybrid intelligent methodology aims to improve performance, increase solution versatility, avoid the local optima trap, speed up convergence and optimize the search process. Firstly, SNLEs are transformed into an optimization problem. Secondly, CSSA is used to solve this optimization problem: SSA is used to update the feasible solutions, whereas the infeasible solutions are updated by CST. One of the most significant advantages of the suggested technique is that it does not ignore infeasible solutions that are updated, because these solutions are often extremely near to the optimal solution, resulting in increased search effectiveness and effective exploration and exploitation. The algorithm's mathematical model is presented in detail. Finally, the proposed approach is assessed with several benchmark problems and real-world applications. Simulation results show that the proposed CSSA is competitive and better in comparison to others, which illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. In addition, a statistical analysis by the Wilcoxon rankings test between CSSA and the other comparison methods shows that all p-values are less than 0.05, and CSSA achieves negative ranks' sum values (R−) much better than the positive ranks' sum values (R+) in all benchmark problems. In addition, the results have high precision and show good agreement in comparison with similar methods, and they further proved the ability of CSSA to solve real-world applications. Accurate prediction of the survival risk level of patients with esophageal cancer is significant for the selection of appropriate treatment methods. It contributes to improving the living quality and survival chance of patients. However, considering that the characteristics of blood index vary with individuals on the basis of their ages, personal habits and living environment etc., a unified artificial intelligence prediction model is not precisely adequate. In order to enhance the precision of the model on the prediction of esophageal cancer survival risk, this study proposes a different model based on the Kohonen network clustering algorithm and the kernel extreme learning machine (KELM), aiming to classifying the tested population into five catergories and provide better efficiency with the use of machine learning. Firstly, the Kohonen network clustering method was used to cluster the patient samples and five types of samples were obtained. Secondly, patients were divided into two risk levels based on 5-year net survival. Then, the Taylor formula was used to expand the theory to analyze the influence of different activation functions on the KELM modeling effect, and conduct experimental verification. RBF was selected as the activation function of the KELM. Finally, the adaptive mutation sparrow search algorithm (AMSSA) was used to optimize the model parameters. The experimental results were compared with the methods of the artificial bee colony optimized support vector machine (ABC-SVM), the three layers of random forest (TLRF), the gray relational analysis–particle swarm optimization support vector machine (GP-SVM) and the mixed-effects Cox model (Cox-LMM). The results showed that the prediction model proposed in this study had certain advantages in terms of prediction accuracy and running time, and could provide support for medical personnel to choose the treatment mode of esophageal cancer patients.
