Background: Quantification of the association between menopausal status and risk of lung cancer is inconsistent. We carried out a meta-analysis of available studies to examine this issue. Methods: Relevant articles were identified by searching PudMed and Embase databases. Reference lists from selected papers were also reviewed. A random-effect model was used to calculate summary odds ratios (OR) and relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Publication bias was estimated using Egger regression asymmetry test. Results: Eight eligible studies, including 5 case–control studies and 3 cohort studies, provided data for meta-analysis. Postmenopausal women had a statistically significant increased risk of lung cancer in all included studies (RR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.12–1.85) and cohort studies (RR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.05–1.86), but not in case–control studies (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 0.95–2.24). Conclusions: Overall, there was evidence that postmenopause is related to increased lung cancer risk. However, studies have produced slightly heterogeneous results (I2 = 38.40%). To obtain a better indication of relationship, well-designed large prospective studies are required.

The partial pressure of oxygen decreases as altitude increases, the preoperative chronic hypoxemia (CH) may have a plausible clinical impact. Risk factors for postoperative serious adverse events (pSAEs) in patients living in high altitudes during primary hip arthroplasty (HA) are not clear. This is an observational study embracing patients from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015 at Yan’an Hospital of Kunming City, a 1338-bed municipal teaching hospital of Kunming Medical University. Univariate analysis revealed that significant differences between patients with and without preoperative CH occurred in intraoperative hypotension (77 [33%] vs 34 [47%], P = .040) and that significant differences between patients with and without pSAEs occurred in following variables: preoperative CH (32 [57%] vs 199 [80%], P

Cutaneous pili migrans and creeping eruption caused by parasitic diseases may present as a moving linear lesion in skin. The former, caused by a hair shaft or fragment embedded in the superficial skin or middle dermis, is a rare condition characterized by creeping eruption with a black line observed at the advancing end. In exceptionally rare instance, the hair grows inside the skin and burrows in the uppermost dermis, such a condition has been called “ingrown hair.” We report a 30-year-old Chinese man, who was accustomed to pull or extrude the beard hairs, with 1-year history of slowly extending black linear eruption on his right chin. Cutaneous examination revealed a 4-cm long black linear lesion beneath the skin associated with edematous erythema around and folliculitis on both ends of the lesion. After treatment with topical mupirocin ointment, the erythema and folliculitis improved and 2 hairs of the beard with hair follicles were pulled out from the skin. Two weeks later, another similar black line about 1 cm in length in the skin presented on the prior lesional area, which was pulled out by a shallow incision of the skin and was also demonstrated as a beard hair with hair follicle. The patient was diagnosed as “ingrowing hair” with multiple recurrences. The lesions recovered after the beard hairs were pulled out. No recurrence occurred in a year of follow-up. We suggest that “ingrowing hair” is better than “ingrown hair” to describe such a condition. Pulling out the involved hair and correcting the bad practice are its optimal management strategies.

Both shingles and psoriasis are common cutaneous diseases. About 25% of the psoriatic patients develop Koebner phenomenon (KP) after various injuries, and in rare instance, KP may occur at the site of healed or healing shingles. We report a 30-year-old man with 7-month history of scalp psoriasis who developed KP at the areas of developing shingles. Cutaneous examination revealed scaly erythematous papules and plaques located on the scalp and forehead, and groups of clustered erythematous papules with silver scales in the dermatome distributed on the right side of chest wall the prior herpes zoster lesions involved. After removal of the scales on the papules, underlying bleeding points were present. The lesions on chest had good response to anti-psoriatic therapies, as the lesions on scalp did. After a year of follow-up, recurrent psoriasis occurred, but the lesions were located only on the scalp, and the areas of prior occurrence of shingles, because of which we considered diagnosis of recurrent psoriasis rather than relapsing KP for the chest lesions. Not only the healing and healed shingles can trigger KP in psoriasis, but also the developing shingles can cause psoriatic KP at the site of herpes zoster lesions.
