1. When platinum is alloyed with one element (ruthenium, rhodium, palladium) the variation of the elasticity modulus for the binary alloy with the concentration increases with the elastic distortion in the lattice of the alloy and with the elasticity modulus and melting point of the alloying element. 2. For the Pt−Pd system the elasticity modulus decreases continuously with increasing palladium concentrations up to 100%. 3. The elasticity modulus of the quaternary alloy decreases considerably faster with increasing concentrations of palladium than in the case of the binary Pt−Pd alloy. 4. In the range of palladium concentrations investigated the modulus of elasticity of the quarternary alloy can be approximated with an error of no more than 6% by an equation of type (1).

1. The modulus of elasticity E at 20–625°C is highest for high-speed tungsten-molybdenum steel R8M3K6S and R6M5 with HRC 63-67. 2. We investigated the kinetics of hardening in manganese alloys quenched from the γ Mn region — the distinguishing characteristic is the exceedingly sharp increase of the hardness during the first minute of holding (1–10 min) at 450–500°C. The hardness peak after very short holding times is due to the formation of β1 phase. With holding for longer times secondary hardening occurs due to precipitation of the hard and brittle α Mn phase. 2. The maximum hardness with holding for a short time is higher for the alloy with a large palladium content (30%), which is accompanied by the volume effect of the γ → α1 + α Mn transformation. 3. The hardness of β1 phase is relatively low and varies little with the tempering time. 4. The high hardness of Mn−Pd alloys after holding for a short time is evidently due to the particular condition of the β1 phase at the time of precipitation from the γ Mn solid solution and the internal stresses that occur. 5. In the hardened condition the Mn−Pd alloy with 30% Pd is nonmagnetic, has a high modulus of elasticity, and has satisfactory corrosion resistance.

However, we found that binary alloys of titanium with aluminum retain fairly good ductility with 3-3.5% A1 when the oxygen content is 0.3-0.35%. In this case the alloy remains ductile, thermally stable, and is weldable and corrosion resistant. This work concerns the effect of zirconium in alloys of titanium with aluminum and oxygen and also the effect of oxygen in alloys with aluminum and zirconium. The alloys were investigated by means of electron and x-ray diffraction and microanalysis [3]; the modulus of elasticity, electrical resistivity, hardness, and mechanical properties were determined. The alloys were melted in a cold hearth furnace with a consumable electrode in argon. The original materials were TG-110 titanium sponge, AV000 aluminum, iodide zirconium, and Ti-O and Ti-AI master alloys with 15.8% O and 35.8% A1. The addition of 0.6% V and 0.6% Nb to steel with 0.6% C (steel 60BF) resulted, after preliminary normalization at 850°, in an austenite grain size of 2.7 μ (grade 14) that was stable during heating to 850–1050° at rates of 20–60 deg/sec. Isothermal holding for as long as 180 sec at 950° does not lead to grain growth. 2. The austenite grain size of steel 60BF after quenching from 850–1050° is 2.5–2.0 μ. The austenite grain size remains essentially unchanged for the steel subjected to preliminary quenching or normalization. 3. The effect of tempering temperature on the mechanical properties of steel 60BF and 60 in relation to the austenite grain size was investigated. The steels with smaller grains have better properties at all tempering temperatures with the exception of 500–650°. Due to aging processes at these temperatures the ultimate and yield strengths and the modulus of elasticity are higher for steel 60BF with coarse grains than for the steel with fine grains.

Niobium alloys with 10–15% Ti are deformable and have a relatively low modulus of elasticity (less than 11,000 kg/mm2) and low temperature coefficient of the elasticity modulus [(10–20), 10−6 deg−1] up to 600°C. 2. The heat resistance of Ti−Mo alloys at 400–700°C increases with the molybdenum concentration. 3. The data obtained on the variation of the heat resistance of Ti−Mo alloys with the composition and structure make it possible to determine the optimal composition of Ti−Mo alloys with the maximum heat resistance from the phase diagram.

1. The new nonmagnetic free-cutting stainless steel 0Kh17N16 has a highly stable austenitic structure and minimal magnetic susceptibility. The magnetizability of 0Kh17N16 is lower than that of Kh18N10T. Unlike Kh18N10T, steel 0Kh17N16 has no polarity after machining, and the magnetizability does not change. 2. As the result of alloying with sulfur, 0Kh17N16 has good machinability on standard and automatic apparatus. The steel can be used for manufacturing complex parts with high accuracy of the dimensions and surface finish. 3. The mechanical properties of 0Kh17N16 are not inferior to those of Kh18N10T, and the modulus of elasticity is even somewhat higher. 4. Steel 0Kh17N16 has a high corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures under conditions of high humidity. The steel is not susceptible to intercrystalline corrosion after quenching.

1. The new nonmagnetic precipitation-hardening spring alloy 55BTYu is distinguished by its low modulus of elasticity, negligible thermal coefficient of elasticity, and high corrosion resistance. 2. The optimal heat treatment conditions are given for obtaining a high level of elastic properties. 3. The alloy is recommended for elastically sensitive elements in high-precision instruments and elastically sensitive elements requiring high corrosion resistance.

In solid solutions of the Ti−Sn−O system the modulus of elasticity and characteristic temperature increases, while the rms deviation of atoms decreases, with increasing concentrations of oxygen. 2. There is a relationship between the strength of interatomic bonds and the creep resistance of the alloys. The strengthening effect of oxygen at elevated temperatures can be explained by the increase in the strength of interatomic bonds when Ti−Sn alloys are alloyed with oxygen.
