Abstract: We review the secondary‐crater research over the past decade, and provide new analyses and simulations that are the first to model an accumulation of a combined primary‐plus‐secondary crater population as discrete cratering events. We develop the secondary populations by using scaling laws to generate ejecta fragments, integrating the trajectories of individual ejecta fragments, noting the location and velocity at impact, and using scaling laws to estimate secondary‐crater diameters given the impact conditions. We also explore the relationship between the impactor size–frequency distribution (SFD) and the resulting secondary‐crater SFD. Our results from these analyses indicate that the “secondary effect” varies from surface to surface and that no single conclusion applies across the solar system nor at any given moment in time—rather, there is a spectrum of outcomes both spatially and temporally, dependent upon target parameters and the impacting population. Surface gravity and escape speed define the spatial distribution of secondaries. A shallow‐sloped impactor SFD will cause proportionally more secondaries than a steeper‐sloped SFD. Accounting for the driving factors that define the magnitude and spatial distribution of secondaries is essential to determine the relative population of secondary craters, and their effect on derived surface ages. Abstract: Recently a number of studies have identified small lunar geologic structures to be <100 Ma in age using standard remote sensing techniques. Here we present new crater size frequency distributions (CSFDs) and model ages using craters D > 10 m for five small target units: one irregular mare patch (IMP) in Mare Nubium and four regions located on lunar wrinkle ridges in Mare Humorum. For comparison we also date another IMP found in a recent study in Mare Tranquillitatis (Braden et al. ). Absolute model age (AMA) derivation corresponds to 46 ± 5 Ma and 22 ± 1 Ma for Nubium and Sosigenes IMP, respectively. We show that for IMPs and in nearby control mare regions, similar production‐like cumulative log–log SFD slopes of −3 are observed. In contrast, control mare regions in Mare Humorum exhibit shallower equilibrium slopes from −1.83 to −2. Three out of four wrinkle ridges appear to be in equilibrium but with crater lifetimes lower than on the corresponding maria. Low crater frequencies on one wrinkle ridge result in an age of 8.6 ± 1 Ma. This study region contains 80% fresh craters, which suggests that the crater population is still in production indicative of a recent resurfacing event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Impact crater saturation equilibrium is a state where a surface is so densely cratered that a new crater cannot form without removing older craters and the observed crater density is in (quasi‐)equilibrium. Whether densely cratered surfaces throughout the solar system are saturated for large, kilometer‐sized craters has been debated for decades. This work explores if spatial statistics can provide insight if these crater distributions are in saturation equilibrium. The supposition is that crater distributions become more spatially uniform (more evenly spaced) as they reach saturation (Squyres et al. ). A numerical simulation of crater saturation is combined with observations of cratered terrains throughout the solar system to assess the utility of using spatial statistics. The numerical simulations examine spatial statistics and saturation equilibrium for crater distributions for various input population size‐frequency distribution (SFD) slopes, along with a range in the effective crater erasure size, effectiveness of smaller craters erasing the rims of larger craters, and the amount of rim needed to recognize a crater. Simulations show that saturated terrains do become more spatially uniform, and that the degree of uniformity appears to be most dependent on the input SFD slope. When simulation results are compared to observed crater distributions, I find that large, kilometer‐sized craters on densely cratered terrains throughout the solar system are likely in saturation equilibrium. Abstract: Lunar irregular mare patches (IMPs) comprise dozens of small, distinctive, and enigmatic lunar mare features. Characterized by their irregular shapes, well‐preserved state of relief, apparent optical immaturity, and few superposed impact craters, IMPs are interpreted to have been formed or modified geologically very recently (<~100 Ma; Braden et al. ). However, their apparent relatively recent formation/modification dates and emplacement mechanisms are debated. We focus in detail on one of the major IMPs, Sosigenes, located in western Mare Tranquillitatis, and dated by Braden et al. ( ) at ~18 Ma. The Sosigenes IMP occurs on the floor of an elongate pit crater interpreted to represent the surface manifestation of magmatic dike propagation from the lunar mantle during the mare basalt emplacement era billions of years ago. The floor of the pit crater is characterized by three morphologic units typical of several other IMPs, i.e., (1) bulbous mounds 5–10 m higher than the adjacent floor units, with unusually young crater retention ages, meters thick regolith, and slightly smaller subresolution roughness than typical mature lunar regolith; (2) a lower hummocky unit mantled by a very thin regolith and significantly smaller subresolution roughness; and (3) a lower blocky unit composed of fresh boulder fields with individual meter‐scale boulders and rough subresolution surface texture. Using new volcanological interpretations for the ascent and eruption of magma in dikes, and dike degassing and extrusion behavior in the final stages of dike closure, we interpret the three units to be related to the late‐stage behavior of an ancient dike emplacement event. Following the initial dike emplacement and collapse of the pit crater, the floor of the pit crater was flooded by the latest‐stage magma. The low rise rate of the magma in the terminal stages of the dike emplacement event favored flooding of the pit crater floor to form a lava lake, and CO gas bubble coalescence initiated a strombolian phase disrupting the cooling lava lake surface. This phase produced a very rough and highly porous (with both vesicularity and macroporosity) lava lake surface as the lake surface cooled. In the terminal stage of the eruption, dike closure with no addition of magma from depth caused the last magma reaching shallow levels to produce viscous magmatic foam due to H2O gas exsolution. This magmatic foam was extruded through cracks in the lava lake crust to produce the bulbous mounds. We interpret all of these activities to have taken place in the terminal stages of the dike emplacement event billions of years ago. We attribute the unusual physical properties of the mounds and floor units (anomalously young ages, unusual morphology, relative immaturity, and blockiness) to be due to the unusual physical properties of the substrate produced during the waning stages of a dike emplacement event in a pit crater. The unique physical properties of the mounds (magmatic foams) and hummocky units (small vesicles and large void space) altered the nature of subsequent impact cratering, regolith development, and landscape evolution, inhibiting the typical formation and evolution of superposed impact craters, and maintaining the morphologic crispness and optical immaturity. Accounting for the effects of the reduced diameter of craters formed in magmatic foams results in a shift of the crater size–frequency distribution age from <100 Myr to billions of years, contemporaneous with the surrounding ancient mare basalts. We conclude that extremely young mare basalt eruptions, and resulting modification of lunar thermal evolution models to account for the apparent young ages of the IMPs, are not required. We suggest that other IMP occurrences, both those associated with pit craters atop dikes and those linked to fissure eruptions in the lunar maria, may have had similar ancient origins. Abstract: Determining the ages of young planetary surfaces relies on using populations of small, often sub‐km diameter impact craters due to the higher frequency at which they form. Smaller craters however can be less reliable for estimating ages as their size‐frequency distribution is more susceptible to alteration with debate as to whether they should be used at all. With the current plethora of meter‐scale resolution images acquired of the lunar and Martian surfaces, small craters have been widely used to derive model ages to establish the temporal relation of recent geologic events. In this review paper, we discuss the many factors that make smaller craters particularly challenging to use and should be taken into consideration when crater counts are confined to small crater diameters. Establishing confidence in a model age ultimately requires an understanding of the geologic context of the surface being dated as reliability can vary considerably and limitations of the dating technique should be considered in applying ages to any geologic interpretation. Abstract: Impact crater populations help us to understand solar system dynamics, planetary surface histories, and surface modification processes. A single previous effort to standardize how crater data are displayed in graphs, tables, and archives was in a 1978 NASA report by the Crater Analysis Techniques Working Group, published in 1979 in Icarus. The report had a significant lasting effect, but later decades brought major advances in statistical and computer sciences while the crater field has remained fairly stagnant. In this new work, we revisit the fundamental techniques for displaying and analyzing crater population data and demonstrate better statistical methods that can be used. Specifically, we address (1) how crater size‐frequency distributions (SFDs) are constructed, (2) how error bars are assigned to SFDs, and (3) how SFDs are fit to power‐laws and other models. We show how the new methods yield results similar to those of previous techniques in that the SFDs have familiar shapes but better account for multiple sources of uncertainty. We also recommend graphic, display, and archiving methods that reflect computers’ capabilities and fulfill NASA's current requirements for Data Management Plans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
