The article discusses the developments of the microwave technology in Europe. It outlines the progress of satellite communications from the launch of Sputnik to the use of satellites for mobile broadcast, as well as the innovations of microwave radar. It states that satellite is an important element for telecommunications, commercial systems, navigation and Earth observation. Meanwhile, radar has been used for automotive applications and terrorism prevention. It denotes that microwave research is taking an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach enabling system capabilities to guide the selection of new technologies.
