The article argues that broadband users will rely more on wireless and fiber-optic technologies in the U.S. Such trend will displace broadband access through digital subscriber line and cable-modem connections. This is heralded by the popularity of the IEEE 802.16 standard, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). WiMAX system can be used to transmit fixed data rates as high as 40 megabytes per second at distances to three kilometers from a base station. Companies have already rally behind WiMAX with the establishment of the WiMAX forum.
