In this paper, we discuss the implementation of artificial self-awareness mechanisms and self-reflection abilities in deep neural networks. While the current limitations of research prevent achieving cognitive capabilities on par with natural biological entities, the incorporation of basic self-awareness and self-reflection mechanisms in deep learning architectures offers substantial advantages in tackling specific problems across various scientific fields, including geosciences. In the first section, we outline the foundational architecture of our deep learning approach termed Self-Aware Learning (SAL). The subsequent part of the paper highlights the practical benefits of this machine learning methodology through synthetic tests and applications addressed to automatic classification and image analysis of real petrological data sets. The identification of minerals is indispensable in geological analysis. Traditional mineral identification methods are highly dependent on professional knowledge and specialized equipment which often consume a lot of labor. To solve this problem, some researchers use machine learning algorithms to quickly identify a single mineral in images. However, in the natural environment, minerals often exist in an associated form, which makes the identification impossible with traditional machine learning algorithms. For the identification of associated minerals, this paper proposes a deep learning model based on the transformer and multi-label image classification. The model uses transformer architecture to model mineral images and outputs the probability of the existence of various minerals in an image. The experiments on 36 common minerals show that the model can achieve a mean average precision of 85.26%. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of machine learning methods for fast and accurate mineral classification based on microscope thin sections. Such methods can be extremely useful to support geoscientists during the phases of operational geology, especially when mineralogical and petrological data are fully integrated with other geological and geophysical information. In order to be effective, these methods require robust machine learning models trained on pre-labeled data. Furthermore, it is mandatory to optimize the hyper-parameters of the machine learning techniques in order to guarantee optimal classification accuracy and reliability. Nowadays, deep learning algorithms are widely applied for image analysis and automatic classification in a large range of Earth disciplines, including mineralogy, petrography, paleontology, well-log analysis, geophysical imaging, and so forth. The main reason for the recognized effectiveness of deep learning algorithms for image analysis is that they are able to quickly learn complex representations of images and patterns within them. Differently from traditional image-processing techniques based on handcrafted features, deep learning models automatically learn and extract features from the data, capturing, in almost real-time, complex relationships and patterns that are difficult to manually define. Many different types of deep learning models can be used for image analysis and classification, including fully connected deep neural networks (FCNNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs or ConvNet), and residual networks (ResNets). In this paper, we compare some of these techniques and verify their effectiveness on the same dataset of mineralogical thin sections. We show that the different deep learning methods are all effective techniques in recognizing and classifying mineral images directly in the field, with ResNets outperforming the other techniques in terms of accuracy and precision. In addition, we compare the performance of deep learning techniques with different machine learning algorithms, including random forest, naive Bayes, adaptive boosting, support vector machine, and decision tree. Using quantitative performance indexes as well as confusion matrixes, we demonstrate that deep neural networks show generally better classification performances than the other approaches. Furthermore, we briefly discuss how to expand the same workflow to other types of images and geo-data, showing how this deep learning approach can be generalized to a multiscale/multipurpose methodology addressed to the analysis and automatic classification of multidisciplinary information. Mineral recognition is of importance in geological research. Traditional mineral recognition methods need professional knowledge or special equipment, are susceptible to human experience, and are inconvenient to carry in some conditions such as in the wild. The development of computer vision provides a possibility for convenient, fast, and intelligent mineral recognition. Recently, several mineral recognition methods based on images using a neural network have been proposed for this aim. However, these methods do not exploit features extracted from the backbone network or available information of the samples in the mineral dataset sufficiently, resulting in low recognition accuracy. In this paper, a method based on feature fusion and online hard sample mining is proposed to improve recognition accuracy by using only mineral photo images. This method first fuses multi-resolution features extracted from ResNet-50 to obtain comprehensive information of mineral photos, and then proposes the weighted top-k loss to emphasize the learning of hard samples. Based on a dataset consisting of 14,986 images of 22 common minerals, the proposed method with 10-fold cross-validation achieves a Top1 accuracy of 88.01% on the validation image set, surpassing those of Inception-v3 and EfficientNet-B0 by a margin of 1.88% and 1.29%, respectively, which demonstrates the good prospect of the proposed method for convenient and reliable mineral recognition using mineral photos only. Mineral identification is an important part of geological analysis. Traditional identification methods rely on either the experience of the appraisers or the various measuring instruments, and the methods are either easily influenced by appraisers' experience or require too much work. To solve the above problems, there are studies using image recognition and intelligent algorithms to identify minerals. However, current studies cannot identify many minerals, and the accuracy is low. To increase the number of identified minerals and accuracy, we propose a method that uses both mineral photo images and the Mohs hardness in deep neural networks to identify the minerals. The experimental results showed that the method can reach 90.6% top-1 accuracy and 99.6% top-5 accuracy for 36 common minerals. An app based on the model was implemented on smartphones with no need for accessing the internet and communication signals. Tested on 73 real mineral samples, the app achieved top-1 accuracy of 89% when the mineral image and hardness are both used and 71.2% when only the mineral image is used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
