This study aimed to investigate the impact of as-received biomass fly ashes (BFA) and green liquor dregs obtained from a pulp and paper plant in Brazil as substitutes for metakaolin in geopolymeric formulations. The properties of this type of waste material vary widely between different industrial plants. This study refrains from subjecting the waste materials to any form of pretreatment, taking into account their organic matter and particle size heterogeneity, requiring extensive characterization to evaluate their influence on the compressive strength, apparent open porosity, and water absorption of the geopolymeric samples. The objective was to assess their potential for upcycling purposes as an alternative to energy-intensive materials, such as ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and advanced ceramics. This potential arises from the ability of alkali-activated materials (AAM) to undergo curing at ambient temperatures, coupled with the possibility of compositions primarily derived from waste materials. To improve the sustainability of the products, the amorphous content of the raw material, which is more reactive than crystalline phases, was quantified and used as the base for mixture ratios. This approach aimed to reduce the requirement for alkaline activators, which have significant environmental impacts, while also increasing the waste content in the formulation. The incorporation of waste materials into the geopolymer matrix generally led to a reduction in the compressive strength compared to the benchmark metakaolin sample (19.4 MPa) but did not present a trend. The dregs led to values of 4.1 MPa at 25 wt% and 7.1 MPa at 50 wt%, a behavior that is somewhat counterintuitive, and BFA at 10 wt% presented 5.7 MPa. Nevertheless, the apparent open porosity remained at high levels for all the samples, close to 50%, and the compressive strength of most of them was over the values obtained for the metakaolin-only samples with mixture ratios calculated from the total composition instead of the amorphous composition. The decrease in strength and the increase in porosity were attributed to the specific characteristics of the waste materials, such as their high crystallinity, presence of organic matter, heterogeneous particle composition, and size. Overall, this study provides insight into the variations in geopolymerization based on the bulk and amorphous content of the aluminosilicate sources and how the characteristics of the waste materials influence the geopolymer matrix. It also highlights how calculating mixture ratios based on the amorphous composition improves the possibility of waste valorization through alkali activation. Innovation has an important role in improving the productivity, safety and sustainability of mining operations. Historically, ore transport was done by diesel trucks, but with the commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and increase mine safety, mining companies have invested in innovative, more sustainable ore transport technologies. The innovative truckless system, with the intensive use of belt conveyors to transport the ore from the mine to the processing plant, represents a huge project and capital investment. However, operation costs are lower when considering the decrease of fuel use and also maintenance expenses. This paper presents an economic analysis of a mine-to-crusher model to estimate and minimize the operating expenses of an open-pit iron mine located in northern Brazil. The activities at this truckless mine consist of drilling and blasting, loading and primary crushing. In this study, the calibration of the mine-to-crusher model was based on rock fragmentation from the blasting phase. The costs of each mine operation phase were estimated for an optimum 80% passing size (P80). The calibration was conducted with the values of technical and economic parameters in 2019. By considering the structural lithologies of canga and jaspillites, we concluded that the P80 value that minimizes costs might be in the range from 0.31 to 0.34 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM), like other geoscience fields, is subject to a variety of uncertainties. When data about unfavorable sites to find deposits (i.e., drill intersections to barren rocks) is lacking in MPM using machine learning (ML) methods, the synthetic generation of negative datasets is required. As a result, techniques for selecting point locations to represent negative examples must be employed. Several approaches have been proposed in the past; however, one can never be certain that the points chosen are true negatives or, at the very least, optimal for training. As a consequence, methodologies that account for the uncertainty of the generation of negative datasets in MPM are needed. In this paper, we compare two criteria for selecting negative examples and quantify the uncertainty associated with this process by generating 400 potential maps for each of the three ML methods utilized (200 maps for each criterion), which include random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbors (KNC). The results showed that applying a geological constraint to the creation of negative datasets reduced prediction uncertainty and improved overall model performance but produced larger areas of very high probability (i.e., >0.9) when compared to using only the spatial distribution of known deposits and occurrences as a constraint. SHAP values were used to find approximations for the importance of features in nonlinear methods, and kernel density estimations were used to examine how they varied depending on the negative dataset used to train the ML models. Prospectivity models for magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits were generated using data from the shuttle radar terrain mission, gamma-ray, magnetic lineaments, and proximity to dykes. This study aims to investigate the effects of parent rock and minerals on lateritic weathering. The study presents X-ray diffraction (XRD), whole-rock geochemistry, and Nd-Sr isotopic data for examining two profiles, 10 and 12 m thick, respectively, that illustrate the regional tropical weathering status in the Midwest of Brazil. The profiles, developed from metasedimentary and sedimentary rocks, are constituted by saprolite, mottled horizon, lateritic duricrust, and oxisol. Across the profiles, the minerals controlling the weathering geochemistry are muscovite, microcline, quartz, kaolinite, hematite, goethite, and gibbsite. Red and yellow zones in the saprolite and mottled horizon as well as the lateritic duricrust with breccia/fragmental, pisolitic, and oolitic textures make profile 1 more complex. In contrast, profile 2 has an oxisol that mantles the homogeneous vermiform lateritic duricrust. Fe2O3, accumulated during surface weathering, is a potent element in the geochemical profile control since it forms the harder goethite to hematite lateritic duricrust, bearing most of the trace elements (As, Cu, Cs, Pb, Sc, Sr, Th, U, V, and Zn) with similar ionic radii and electrovalence. The LREE have affinity for the elements of the Fe2O3 group of the lateritic duricrust. On the other hand, the K2O group together with Zr and TiO2 e in the phyllite, saprolite, and mottled horizon of profile 1, are associated with the HREE. Additionally, in profile 2, the HREE are mostly associated with the Al2O3 group and the residual minerals in the oxisol. The indication that REE is associated with phosphates, zircon, rutile/anatase, cereanite, and muscovite/illite, which have variable weathering behavior, caused the REE fractionation to occur across and between the profiles. Despite the REE fractionation, the ƐNd(0) values along the profiles consistently maintain the signature of the parent rock. Muscovite and microcline weathering, in profiles 1 and 2, respectively, control the decrease in 87Sr/86Sr signatures of both profiles and the distinct radiogenic ratios. The development of lateritic duricrust in both profiles indicates a similar weathering intensity, although the gibbsite–kaolinite predominance in the oxisol of profile 2 highlights a geochemical reorganization under humid conditions, as well as near-intense soluble silica leaching. The giant Pre-salt reservoirs represent most of the oil production in Brazil. The main Aptian sag reservoirs were deposited in a unique and highly complex hyper-alkaline lacustrine setting. These deposits are essentially constituted by fascicular and spherulitic calcite precipitated in a magnesian clay matrix (stevensite, kerolite, and saponite/hectorite). Although vital for understanding the origin and main reservoir quality control, the genesis and interactions of clays and carbonates are still poorly constrained. The detailed petrographic description was focused on 812 thin sections from five wells drilled in the Santos Basin Aptian Barra Velha Formation, combined with cathodoluminescence, UV epifluorescence, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The main syngenetic processes were the deposition of finely laminated peloidal and ooidal Mg-clays, the formation of fascicular calcite crusts on the sediment–water interface, and the redeposition of these materials as intraclasts. Abundant clay peloids engulfed in syngenetic shrubs indicate that calcite and clay precipitation was concomitant, though with highly variable rates. Eodiagenetic phases include matrix-replacive and -displacive spherulites and fascicular shrubs; matrix-replacive blocky calcite and dolomite; lamellar carbonates filling matrix shrinkage pores; and microcrystalline calcite, dolomite, and silica replacing the Mg-clay matrix. The preferential dolomitization and calcitization of peloidal layers were most likely due to their higher permeability and larger specific surface. Matrix-replacive saddle dolomite, macrocrystalline calcite, and dawsonite are interpreted as mesodiagenetic or hydrothermal phases after significant matrix dissolution. Unraveling the processes of the formation and alteration of the carbonates and clays and their interactions in the Pre-salt deposits is essential for constraining the depositional and diagenetic conditions in their unique environments and their diagenetic overprinting and for decreasing the exploration risks and increasing the production of those extraordinary reservoirs. A synthesis of the evolution of the Neoproterozoic belts or orogens surrounding the São Francisco craton (SFC) in northeastern and southeastern Brazil is presented. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the superposition of sedimentary basins, from rift to passive margin to retroarc and foreland, as well as identifying three diachronic continental collisions in the formation of the SFC. The Tonian passive margin occurs in the southern Brasília Belt with the Vazante, Canastra, and Araxá Groups. During the Tonian, island magmatic arcs and basins developed in front and behind these arcs (fore- and back-arcs). Subsequently, in the Cryogenian–Ediacaran, a retroarc foreland basin developed with part of the Araxá Group and the Ibiá Group, and finally, a foreland basin developed, which was filled by the Bambuí Group. A tectonic structure of superimposed nappes, with subhorizontal S1–2 foliation, formed between 650 and 610 Ma, is striking. In the northern Brasília Belt, there is the Stenian passive margin of the Paranoá Group, the Tonian intrusion of the Mafic–Ultramafic Complexes, and the Mara Rosa Island magmatic arc, active since the Tonian, with limited volcanic–sedimentary basins associated with the arc. A thrust–fold belt structure is prominent, with S1 foliation and late transcurrent, transpressive tectonics characterized by the Transbrasiliano (TB) lineament. The Cryogenian–Ediacaran collision between the Paranapanema and São Francisco cratons is the first collisional orogenic event to the west. In the Rio Preto belt, on the northwestern margin of the São Francisco craton, the Cryogenian–Ediacaran Canabravinha rift basin is prominent, with gravitational sediments that represent the intracontinental termination of the passive margin that occurs further northeast. The rift basin was intensely deformed at the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary, as was the Bambuí Group. On the northern and northeastern margins of the São Francisco craton, the Riacho do Pontal and Sergipano orogens stand out, showing a comparable evolution with Tonian and Cryogenian rifts (Brejo Seco, Miaba, and Canindé); Cryogenian–Ediacaran passive margin, where the Monte Orebe ophiolite is located; and Cordilleran magmatic arcs, which developed between 620 and 610 Ma. In the Sergipano fold belt, with a better-preserved outer domain, gravitational sedimentation occurs with glacial influence. A continental collision between the SFC and the PEAL (Pernambuco-Alagoas Massif) occurred between 610 and 540 Ma, with intense deformation of nappes and thrusts, with vergence to the south and accommodation by dextral transcurrent shear zones, such as the Pernambuco Lineament (PE). The Araçuaí belt or orogen was formed at the southeastern limit of the SFC by a Tonian intracontinental rift, later superimposed by a Cryogenian–Ediacaran rift–passive margin of the Macaúbas Group, with gravitational sedimentation and glacial influence, and distally by oceanic crust. It is overlain by a retroarc basin with syn-orogenic sedimentation of the Salinas Formation, partly derived from the Rio Doce cordilleran magmatic arc and associated basins, such as the Rio Doce and Nova Venécia Groups. A third continental collision event (SF and Congo cratons), at the end of the Ediacaran (580–530 Ma), developed a thrust–fold belt that deforms the sediments of the Araçuaí Belt and penetrates the Paramirim Corridor, transitioning to the south to a dextral strike-slip shear zone that characterizes the Ribeira Belt. The Upper Velhas River Basin, in the mining region of the Iron Quadrangle, is one of the most polluted basins in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The region has been exploited for gold and iron, among other substances of interest. In addition to abandoned mines, active works and mineralized rocks contribute to the discharge of contaminated waters into the rivers and streams. Thus, high-density geochemical mapping with the determination of reference values has become very important, as it allows the spatial distribution of contaminant elements to be obtained, contributing to the recognition of areas with deviant values in the basin. Two hundred and eight sediment samples were collected from streams throughout the Velhas River Basin, with a density of one sample per 15 km2. Geochemical maps were compiled using the distance-weighted inverse interpolation method, and concentrations were distinguished from anomalies using the box plot Upper Inner Fence technique. It was found that 73–78% of the basin area does not present geogenic and anthropic anomalies, with values up to the third quartile for As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Zn. However, anomalies related to human actions, mainly mining works and rock types, occupy 2 to 11% of the area. This first high-density mapping in the Upper Velhas River Basin found numerous streams with concentrations of the elements studied above the Probable Effect Level, allowing us to determine which locations, cities, and river sub-basins are exposed to environmental risks and should be monitored and protected. The "dolomite problem", which has confused scientists for nearly two centuries, is an important fundamental geological problem. The mineralogical characteristics of carbonate minerals show that the dolomite structure consists of an ordered arrangement of alternating layers of Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations interspersed with C O 3 2 − anion layers normal to the c-axis. The dolomite structure violates the c glide plane in the calcite structure, which means that dolomite has R 3 ¯ space group symmetry. The ordered dolomite has superlattice XRD reflections [e.g., (101), (015) and (021)], which distinguish it from calcite and high-Mg calcite. The calculation of thermodynamic parameters shows that modern seawater has a thermodynamic tendency of dolomite precipitation and the dolomitization reaction can be carried out in standard state. However, the latest thermodynamic study shows that modern seawater is not conducive to dolomitization, and that seawater is favorable for dolomitization in only a few regions, such as Abu Dhabi, the Mediterranean and the hypersaline lagoons in Brazil. The kinetic factors of dolomite formation mainly consist of the hydration of Mg2+, the presence of sulfate and the activity of carbonate. Current studies have shown that the presence of microorganisms, exopolymeric substances (EPS), organic molecules, carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups associated with microorganisms and organic molecules, clay minerals with negative charges and dissolved silica facilitate magnesium ions to overcome hydration and thus promote Mg2+ incorporation into growing Ca-Mg carbonates. Similarly, the metabolic activity of microorganisms is conducive to the increase in alkalinity. However, the inhibitory effect of sulfate on dolomite formation seems to be overestimated, and sulfate may even be a catalyst for dolomite formation. Combining the carbonate crystallization mechanism with thermodynamic and kinetic factors suggests that the early stage of dolomite precipitation or the dolomitization reaction may be controlled by kinetics and dominated by unstable intermediate phases, while metastable intermediate phases later transform to ordered dolomite via an Ostwald's step rule. We present an integrated method for mapping the basement structures of sedimentary basins by combining surface gravity data, seismic imaging, and borehole logging information. The core of the method is a nonlinear inversion algorithm for constructing the shape and depth of the basement from surface gravity data. By using the primal-logarithmic barrier method, we impose depth constraints from the borehole information. The basement depth was imaged by seismic interpretation and incorporated into the inversion as a reference model. As a result, the gravity inversion constructs basement structures that are closest to the seismic input while simultaneously satisfying the surface gravity data and borehole information. We used this new methodology to unveil the basement morphology of the Recôncavo Basin, Brazil. Recôncavo is a syn-rift onshore mature basin that exhibits a strong correlation between oil field distribution and tectonic framework. We present a seafloor 4D gravity feasibility analysis for monitoring deep-water hydrocarbon reservoirs. To perform the study, we have simulated the gravity effect due to different density and pore pressure distributions derived from a realistic model of a turbiditic oil field in Campos Basin, offshore Brazil. These reservoirs are analogs of several other passive-margin turbiditic systems located around the world. We considered four reservoir scenarios including and not including seafloor subsidence. Our results indicate that the gravity responses are higher than the feasible value of 3 μGal 12 years following the base survey. The area of maximum gravity anomaly corresponds to where we suppose hydrocarbon extraction occurs. A maximum seafloor subsidence of 0.6 cm was estimated, resulting in no detectable gravity effects. Our results endorse the 4D seafloor gravity acquisition as a beneficial tool for monitoring deep-water passive-margin turbiditic reservoirs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the colonial era to modern times, gold mining has played a crucial role in shaping Brazil's economy, culture, and landscape, particularly in the Iron Quadrangle region. Therefore, resulting waste has accumulated in tailings structures, either from deactivated circuits or plants still in production. The present study reveals the potential assessed based on a set of metallurgical tests, assuming specific scenarios depending on the occurrence modes of interesting economic elements. For Au, calcination, leaching, and flotation are promising techniques to recover this element. Tests indicated that toxic elements such as Sb and As could be effectively reused in the form of glass. The generation of other products from dry cleaning techniques was not effective but promising since there was an enrichment of elements with Au, Fe, Al, and K in specific fractions. In Juazeiro de Piauí and Castelo do Piauí, two cities in northeast Brazil, mined morisca rock is widely used in civil construction for external coating applications. Aiming at a sustainable practice for its extraction, which includes the economical use of the tailings from its mining, this work presents a solution for the use of discarded materials from processing morisca from Piauí. In this context, an analysis of the results of using morisca as a substitute for clay materials for applications in red ceramics are presented. For the analyses, XRF, XRD, microgranulometry, limits of consistency, TG, DTG, and a set of technological tests inherent to ceramic materials were used. Exploring covered terrains is a challenge that requires the integration of multiple sources of knowledge, particularly in the initial stages of mineral exploration. The Apuí region, located in the Southwestern Amazon Craton, has a small and constant gold production, despite the deep cover and limited geological knowledge. The gold is mainly hosted in quartz veins and breccias that cut Paleoproterozoic volcano-sedimentary sequences. The occurrences have similar characteristics to magmatic–hydrothermal deposits, such as a lack of regional metamorphism and intense hydrothermalization. We undertook a multi-source prospective investigation on different scales using 2D and 3D techniques to translate the footprints of the mineral system into mappable criteria. Gold prospectivity maps for the Juma District and Guida Target were produced by integrating geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets in knowledge-driven fuzzy systems. Regional airborne magnetization vector inversion (MVI) models were utilized. The correlation between the drill cores and the magnetic susceptibility models highlighted a potential surface for gold mineralization associated with the boundary between a granitic intrusion and volcano-sedimentary rocks. The prospectivity maps reduced the search area, and the regional susceptibility models allowed for the reconnaissance of structures and bodies that may be related to gold mineralization at depth. The flotation has been successfully applied to process the iron ore for the particle size (Ps) from 10 µm up to 150 µm. The presence of the slimes (Ps < 10 µm) is harmful on the reverse flotation of quartz, so they are usually prior removed by hydrocyclones. The main effects of the presence of slimes on the flotation are related to the increase on reagents consumption, the froth stability, and decrease on the selectivity. The lower floatability of coarse quartz particles (+74 µm) combined with the presence of slimes, even in small quantities, drastically affect the flotation response. This paper shows a study of characterization of a typical iron ore slime, aiming to create a better understanding of its role on the concentration by flotation. The main characteristics of typical slimes from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Brazil are the presence of almost 70% of hematite, 25% of quartz, and 5% of kaolinite, as the main silicates gangue minerals. Furthermore, the particle size distribution revealed that 80% of the hematite and the kaolinite are below 20 µm. The affinity between the ultrafine kaolinite of the slimes with the corn starch is harmful to the reverse flotation of quartz, as the starch has an important depressing action over the hematite. The presence of 20% of hematite −20 µm decreased the recovery to the froth of quartz + 74 µm from 97% to 62%, where the slimes coating seems to be the main responsible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brownfield areas are important targets of exploration; however, the extensive drilling present in these areas has not fully exploited their prospective potential. The appropriate use of drill hole cores in these areas can play an important role in deep exploration. We present a case study of iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) Furnas Southeast deposit, located in the Carajás Mineral Province, Brazil. This deposit has disseminated chalcopyrite, bornite and gold mineralization associated with a silicic (Si), potassic (K), calcic (Na), sodic-calcic (Na-Ca) hydrothermal alteration, and intense iron metasomatism with massive magnetite (Fe) alteration. Petrophysical hand-held equipment measurements were carried out on drill core samples with the purpose of studying the potential roles that magnetic susceptibility properties can play in high-grade mineralization. The results indicate that the geological complexity of the IOCG deposit is readily reflected in the extensive variation of the measurements. The statistical analysis shows how the detailed characterization of this physical property carried out for this mineral association could effectively define and describe ore, and the magnetic susceptibility footprints of hydrothermal alteration zones. Furthermore, we were able to perform a magnetic susceptibility 3D modeling of diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferrimagnetic responses strictly correlated with known orebody. Rondônia intrusive suites represent the youngest A-type magmatism that occurred in the SW of the Amazon craton, with mineralizations in Sn, Nb, Ta, W, and topaz. Petrological and isotopic studies (U-Pb and Lu-Hf by LA-ICP-MS) allowed the Massangana granite to be subdivided into São Domingos facies (medium to fine biotite-granite), Bom Jardim facies (fine granite), Massangana facies (pyterlites and coarse granites) and Taboca facies (fine granites). The crystallization ages obtained were between 995.7 ± 9.5 Ma to 1026 ± 16 Ma, and the εHf values vary significantly between positive and negative, showing predominantly crustal sources for forming these rocks. Petrographic studies on ore samples indicate the action of co-magmatic hydrothermal fluids enriched in CO2, H2O, and F. These ores are characterized by endogreisens, exogreisens, pegmatites, and quartz veins that are explored in the São Domingos facies area. The endogreisens and exogreisens are formed by topaz-granites and zinnwaldite-granites; the pegmatites are formed by topaz-zinnwaldite-cassiterite-granites; and the veins by cassiterite-sulfides and quartz. The geometries of the mineralized bodies indicate a dome-shaped contact with the host rocks in the magma chamber and can be attributed to residual accumulation. In this sense, the origin of these ores is related to the evolution of intrusive granitic bodies where the terminal phases of the fluid-enriched magma are lodged in the apical portions, and the origin of the mineralized bodies present a biotite-granite, albite-granite, and endogreisens evolution (potassium series), or biotite-granite, alkali-granite and endogreisens (sodic series) and these rocks present TDM ages that indicate a concerning relation to the non-mineralized rocks of Massangana granite. Important advances have been made in the last 60 years or so in the modeling of ball mills using mathematical formulas and models. One approach that has gained popularity is the population balance model, in particular, when coupled to the specific breakage rate function. The paper demonstrates the application of this methodology to optimize solids concentration in ball milling of an iron ore from Brazil. The wet grinding experiments were conducted in bench (0.25 m diameter) and pilot-scale mills (0.42 m diameter), and surveys in a full-scale industrial (5.2 m diameter) mill. It is first demonstrated that the successful application of the model required recognizing the non-normalizable nature of the breakage function of the particular ore. It is then demonstrated how the model can be used to predict results of pilot-scale grinding tests under different conditions (overflow/grate discharge) based on data from batch grinding tests. Finally, the model is used to predict the effect of changing solids concentration inside the industrial mill, with good correspondence between the pilot plant and full-scale results, which demonstrated the benefit of reducing solids concentration to values between 76 and 80% in weight for the ore of interest from the 83% that was originally used in the operation. Although emerald deposits are relatively rare, they can be formed in several different, but specific geologic settings and the classification systems and models currently used to describe emerald precipitation and predict its occurrence are too restrictive, leading to confusion as to the exact mode of formation for some emerald deposits. Generally speaking, emerald is beryl with sufficient concentrations of the chromophores, chromium and vanadium, to result in green and sometimes bluish green or yellowish green crystals. The limiting factor in the formation of emerald is geological conditions resulting in an environment rich in both beryllium and chromium or vanadium. Historically, emerald deposits have been classified into three broad types. The first and most abundant deposit type, in terms of production, is the desilicated pegmatite related type that formed via the interaction of metasomatic fluids with beryllium-rich pegmatites, or similar granitic bodies, that intruded into chromium- or vanadium-rich rocks, such as ultramafic and volcanic rocks, or shales derived from those rocks. A second deposit type, accounting for most of the emerald of gem quality, is the sedimentary type, which generally involves the interaction, along faults and fractures, of upper level crustal brines rich in Be from evaporite interaction with shales and other Cr- and/or V-bearing sedimentary rocks. The third, and comparatively most rare, deposit type is the metamorphic-metasomatic deposit. In this deposit model, deeper crustal fluids circulate along faults or shear zones and interact with metamorphosed shales, carbonates, and ultramafic rocks, and Be and Cr (±V) may either be transported to the deposition site via the fluids or already be present in the host metamorphic rocks intersected by the faults or shear zones. All three emerald deposit models require some level of tectonic activity and often continued tectonic activity can result in the metamorphism of an existing sedimentary or magmatic type deposit. In the extreme, at deeper crustal levels, high-grade metamorphism can result in the partial melting of metamorphic rocks, blurring the distinction between metamorphic and magmatic deposit types. In the present paper, we propose an enhanced classification for emerald deposits based on the geological environment, i.e., magmatic or metamorphic; host-rocks type, i.e., mafic-ultramafic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and granitoids; degree of metamorphism; styles of minerlization, i.e., veins, pods, metasomatites, shear zone; type of fluids and their temperature, pressure, composition. The new classification accounts for multi-stage formation of the deposits and ages of formation, as well as probable remobilization of previous beryllium mineralization, such as pegmatite intrusions in mafic-ultramafic rocks. Such new considerations use the concept of genetic models based on studies employing chemical, geochemical, radiogenic, and stable isotope, and fluid and solid inclusion fingerprints. The metal-rich Vazante-Paracatu Mineral Belt, in central Brazil, hosts the Zn-Pb sulfide Morro Agudo District in the Mesoproterozoic (1.3–1.1 Ga) upper carbonate sequence of the Vazante Group. The Morro Agudo district is comprised of the Morro Agudo deposit and the Bento Carmelo, Sucuri, and Morro do Capão occurrences. This carbonate sequence also hosts the Fagundes, Ambrósia and Bonsucesso Zn-Pb sulfide deposits (northern part) and the zinc silicate Vazante and North Extension deposits (southern part). The structurally controlled, stratabound and stratiform styles of mineralization in the Morro Agudo orebodies have been variably classified as sedimentary exhalative, Irish-type and Mississippi Valley-type. In this study, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) spot analyses of sphalerite and galena from the Morro Agudo district revealed that red sphalerite (interpreted as the last stage) has higher Fe and Mn and lower Bi, Co, Cu, Ge, Hg, Tl compared to the other types of sphalerite, whereas the first generation of galena (Gn-I) is enriched in Ag, Cd, and Se and depleted in Cu and Mn relative to later galena (Gn-II). Mineral paragenesis and principal component analysis (PCA) of ore mineral composition suggest that the Morro Agudo, Sucuri and Morro do Capão mineralized zones formed by similar processes involving Zn-Pb mineralizing fluids with various compositions, comprising two main elemental associations: (1) Fe, As, In, Mn, Sb, Ag; and (2) Cd, Bi, Co, Ga, and Se. Bento Carmelo is distinguished in PCA by its unique dolomite-hosted sphalerite composition with elevated concentrations of Cu, Ge, Hg and likely formed from distinct fluids or processes. Temperatures of the mineralizing fluids for the Morro Agudo district range from 82 to 320 °C, calculated based on the trace element composition of sphalerite. The styles of mineralization and ore compositions are consistent with MVT deposits; however, fluid temperatures are hotter than typical MVT mineralizing fluids and may reflect a higher geothermal gradient or active advective fluid flow during the Brasiliano orogeny. The study presents SEM-based automated mineralogy to distinguish between natural sediments and iron ore tailings deposits from the Paraopeba River, after the failure of B1 Dam in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Samples were obtained from borehole cores drilled over channel bars and banks eight months after the failure. After preliminary facies description, sediments from 54 chosen intervals were subjected to density measurement, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM-based automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN) analysis and determination of geochemical major components. Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed six main mineral associations governed by different contents and ratios of quartz, kaolinite and hematite. Natural sediments are predominantly composed of mineral associations containing kaolinite, quartz and quartz + hematite with density values ranging from 2.5 to 3.3 g/cm3. Tailings deposits have density values higher than 3.5 g/cm3 and are mainly composed of hematite with occasional occurrences of kaolinite + hematite. Because of geological complexity and historical terrain occupation and usage, geochemical anomalies are common in the Paraopeba River sediments. Our data suggests that mineralogical oriented studies should precede detailed geochemical investigations, to enhance the understanding of the source of such anomalies and the environmental jeopardy associated to the occurrence. The Passa Três granite is a 5 km2 intrusion in southern Brazil with an NNE–SSW-elongated shape, hosting gold-bearing quartz veins with fluorite, carbonates, sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, aikinite, molybdenite) and native gold. Orebodies are hosted by the pluton roof zone, which is marked by various textures indicating magmatic–hydrothermal transition processes. Mineralisation formed between 613 and 608 Ma in extensional pull-apart structures controlled by two conjugated N–S and E–W fault systems. We report results from petrography, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalyses (EPMA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), trace element analyses of pyrite by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), sulphur isotope (δ34S) analyses, and fluid inclusion microthermometry. Hydrothermal alteration is dominantly developed as phengite–quartz–carbonate and sericite–carbonate–chlorite assemblages along mineralised structures. Fluid inclusion study indicates mineralising fluids with H2O-CO2-NaCl composition, low to moderate salinity (0.2–12.84 wt % NaCl eq.), and temperatures from 400 to 150 °C. The sulphur isotopic composition of pyrite (−0.1 to 1.1‰) suggests magmatic origin. These data, in conjunction with structurally controlled mineralisation enriched in Au-Bi minerals shortly post-dating the granite emplacement, appoint towards similarities between the Passa Três deposit and intrusion-related gold systems. The specific location of the mineralisation in the core (and in the roof zone, regarding its vertical position) of the Passa Três granitic intrusion defines it as "granite-hosted" thus, it is representative of a specific model that can be used for exploration of other intrusion-related/hosted gold deposits near the studied area or in other locations. The paper highlights the features of constructing a model of a wet semi-autogenous grinding mill based on the discrete element method and computational fluid dynamics. The model was built using Rocky DEM (v. 4.4.2, ESSS, Brazil) and Ansys Fluent (v. 2020 R2, Ansys, Inc., United States) software. A list of assumptions and boundary conditions necessary for modeling the process of wet semi-autogenous grinding by the finite element method is presented. The created model makes it possible to determine the energy-coarseness ratios of the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) process under given conditions. To create the model in Rocky DEM the following models were used: The Linear Spring Rolling Limit rolling model, the Hysteretic Linear Spring model of the normal interaction forces and the Linear Spring Coulomb Limit for tangential forces. When constructing multiphase in Ansys Fluent, the Euler model was used with the primary phase in the form of a pulp with a given viscosity and density, and secondary phases in the form of air, crushing bodies and ore particles. The resistance of the solid phase to air and water was described by the Schiller–Naumann model, and viscosity by the realizable k-epsilon model with a dispersed multiphase turbulence model. The results of the work methods for material interaction coefficients determination were developed. The aim of this research is to characterize the mortars of the Rui Barbosa House Museum, built in 1850, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using X-ray diffraction (XRD), gel-CSH determination, Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry (FTIR), Wavelength-Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF), Thermo gravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), and granulometric analysis. Also, petrographic and physical characteristics such as porosity, water absorption, and apparent density of the mortars were used to identify the raw materials employed in their preparation. Mineralogical associations found are similar (quartz, calcite, kaolinite, microcline, muscovite, and albite) for the majority of samples and only vary in their proportions; the most prominent phases are quartz and calcite. The collected data, indicating that the binder is hydrated lime, lead us to conclude that the analyzed samples are lime mortars, discarding the possibility of cement as the binder material. Two samples, located on the corner of the building, which underwent repairs, present a differentiated behavior, with high levels of dolomite and the presence of pozzolanic material, with greater water absorption and higher density, indicating the use of a different mortar type. In addition, it was verified that the WDXRF and XRD methods are able to determine the trace element composition with comparable precision with respect to the methodological approach proposed by Teutonico (1988). The Proterozoic Vazante zinc silicate district in Minas Gerais, Brazil, hosts world-class hypogene willemite deposits in dolomitic rocks interbedded with siliciclastic rocks deposited in subtidal to supratidal environments. Willemite ore bodies are structurally controlled along regional NE-trending structures which are interpreted as being active during the Neoproterozoic Brasiliano orogeny. The hydrothermal alteration is characterized by an early stage of Fe-dolomite, which replaced the host dolomitic rocks, followed by precipitation of minor sphalerite and then hematite and willemite. Elements commonly enriched in the zinc ore include As, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Fe, Ge, In, Mo, Ni, Sb, Se, U, V and W. Mineralogical, fluid inclusion and isotopic data indicates that mixing of S-poor metalliferous saline fluids with meteoric water favored the formation of willemite ore. Carbonaceous phyllites from the underlying thick siliciclastic sequence show evidence of early enrichment in zinc (and ore-related metals) and remobilization, respectively, prior to and during the Brasiliano orogenic event. This unit is interpreted as a possible source of ore-related elements. It is proposed that during the Brasiliano orogeny, hot (T > 170 °C) saline fluids (>15 wt % eq. NaCl) leached metals from siliciclastic source rocks and precipitated willemite ore in the overlying dolomitic sequence along structures that favored mixing with oxidizing meteoric water. The characterization of Mg-clays in rock samples (well P1) from the Barra Velha Formation (Early Cretaceous) allowed the establishment of mineral assemblages on the basis of their kerolite and Mg-smectite (stevensite and saponite) content. Kerolite-rich assemblages (A and B) rarely contain saponite. Assemblage B is composed of kerolite-stevensite mixed layers, while assemblage A consists of more than 95% kerolite. Mg-smectite-rich assemblages (C and CB) are made up of both Mg-smectites. The predominance of stevensite in the lower interval of the stratigraphic succession suggests evaporative conditions, higher salinity and pH, which would favor its authigenesis by neoformation. In the upper portion, the occurrence of thick kerolite-rich intervals suggests regular water inputs, contributing with a decreasing in salinity and pH, favoring the neoformation of kerolite and later kerolite-stevensite mixed layering. The saponite would be the result of the transformation from Al-smectite into Mg-smectite in a Mg2+ rich medium. The results indicate that lake hydrochemical processes would have allowed the establishment of a basic depositional sequence, from base to top, as follows: (i) initial lake expansion stage marked by the occurrence of saponite, (ii) later kerolite neoformation, (iii) formation of kerolite-stevensite mixed layer with increasing salinity, and (iv) neoformation of stevensite, marking a final stage of maximum salinity (evaporation) and alkalinity of the lake. Oxidation of iron-rich rock is known to generate H2 in oceanic as well as in continental domains. Here we tested the possibility of H2 generation as the result of weathering of banded iron formations (BIF). The BIF constitute more than 60% of global iron ore reserves with low Fe3+/Fetot and total Fe ranging from 20 to 40 wt% and are therefore good candidates for H2 production potential. In the vicinity of BIF-hosted iron mines in Australia, Brazil and South Africa, satellite imaging has revealed the presence of sub-circular depressions that usually are the proxy of H2-emitting features. A morphological comparison of the sub-circular depressions with the ones observed in previous studies point to probable H2 seeping in these areas. In parallel, a petrological study conducted on altered and fresh BIF samples from the Hamersley Province in Western Australia also suggests H2 generation during BIF weathering. Indeed, mineral transitions from ferrous silicate (riebeckite and/or minnesotaite) to ferric iron oxi-hydroxides (goethite) or from ferrous and ferric oxides (magnetite) to exclusively ferric oxides (maghemite, hematite, goethite) were observed on the samples. The oxidation of ferrous iron by aqueous fluids circulating through and leaching the BIF is promising for H2 generation. The BIF weathering profile suggests that the limiting factor is the presence of water, and that this reaction is happening at, or near, surface temperature. This challenges the idea that high temperatures are required to generate H2 as it is the case during the serpentinization. The geological context of this study is established in the iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit of Sossego (Canaã dos Carajás, Brazil), where hydrothermal alterations in shear zones concentrated the metals of interest and added new characteristics to the metavolcanic-sedimentary and granite rocks. The mineral transformation of rocks by hypersaline fluids enriched in metals and silica also modifies some metallurgical properties, such as abrasiveness. Special bench tests on rock drill cores are used in mapping the abrasiveness of rocks, with the Bond abrasion test being more commonly used in the mining industry, but it has a restrictive sampling protocol and mass requirement for geometallurgical studies. As a counterpoint, the test of the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées/Central Laboratory of Bridges and Roads (LCPC) requires a smaller amount of fine material and a finer granulometric range. The study on the use of LCPC was implemented in 40 samples, using Bond Ai as a reference. The results showed a strong correlation between both methodologies (R2 = 95%), validating the use of LCPC to quantify abrasiveness in the Sossego mine. The object of this study is magnesian clay minerals present in carbonate rocks of the post-rift phase of the pre-salt in the Santos Basin. These rocks developed in an Aptian-age alkaline lacustrine environment. This study summarizes the formation of clay minerals associated with different lithotypes in a range of 19 m and a depth of more than 5100 m. They were characterized from petrographic analysis by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (total sample and clay fraction), and modeling by Newmod®; and examined and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. An approach based on identifying lithotypes and characterization of microsites allowed us to understand the occurrence of different clay minerals. Kerolite was the most abundant mineral in the sampled range. It occurs in lamellar aggregates under greater preservation of the original rock lamination and in association with spherulites and shrubs. The Stv/Ker mixed layers occurs in the same association, and formed finer unlaminated aggregates associated with the more intense dolomitization and silicification processes. Saponite occurs associated with detrital minerals forming clayey levels intercalated with microcrystalline carbonates. Fluids with a high Mg/Si and pH < 9 favor the precipitation of kerolite. The Goiás Archean Block (GAB) in central Brazil is an important gold district that hosts several world-class orogenic gold deposits. A better comprehension of the crustal, tectono-magmatic, and metallogenic settings of the GAB is essential to accurately define its geological evolution, evaluate Archean crustal growth models, and target gold deposits. We present an overview of gold systems, regional whole-rock Sm-Nd analyses that have been used to constrain the geological evolution of the GAB, and augment this with new in situ zircon U-Pb and Hf-O isotope data. The orogenic gold deposits show variable host rocks, structural settings, hydrothermal alteration, and ore mineralogy, but they represent epigenetic deposits formed during the same regional hydrothermal event. The overprinting of metamorphic assemblages by ore mineralogy suggests the hydrothermal event is post-peak metamorphism. The metamorphic grade of the host rocks is predominantly greenschist, locally reaching amphibolite facies. Isotope-time trends support a Mesoarchean origin of the GAB, with ocean opening at 3000–2900 Ma, and reworking at 2800–2700 Ma. Crustal growth was dominated by subduction processes via in situ magmatic additions along lithospheric discontinuities and craton margins. This promoted a crustal architecture composed of young, juvenile intra-cratonic terranes and old, long-lived reworked crustal margins. The pre- to post-Late Neoproterozoic geological histories in the south to southwestern part of Mamfe Basin (SW Cameroon) were reported following analysis of the zircon crystals from their host rocks. A genetic model was developed for the zircon host rocks' formation conditions, and the registered post-emplacement events were presented. The obtained ages were correlated with the data available for rocks in the Cameroon Mobile Belt, SE Nigeria, and the Borborema Province of NE Brazil. Separated zircons from Araru black to whitish gneiss, Araru whitish-grey gneiss, and Mboifong migmatite were analyzed for their morphology and texture U-Th-Pb composition, and U-Pb ages. Published U-Pb zircon ages for Otu granitic pegmatite, Babi mica schist, and Nkogho I-type anatectic granite were updated. Zircon ages in Araru black to whitish gneiss; Araru whitish-grey, Mboifong migmatite, Babi mica schist, Nkogho I-type anatectic granite, and Otu granitic pegmatite date the Eburnean tectono-magmatic/metamorphic event in Cameroon and SE Nigeria. The Late Paleoproterozoic to Early Mesoproterozoic ages record extensional (continental rift) settings and anorogenic magmatism in the Borborema Province in the NE of Brazil. These ages date collisional phases between the São Francisco–Congo and West African cratons and the Saharan metacraton with metamorphism and magmatism in Cameroon. They also date the Kibarian tectono-magmatic/metamorphism and PanAfrican tectono-magmatic/metamorphism in SE Nigeria. The Late Paleoproterozoic to Early Mesoproterozoic ages date the Cariris Velhos orogeny in the Borborema Province in NE Brazil, with Early Tonian crustal rifting, magmatism, and metamorphism and the collisional phase of the Brasiliano orogeny with syn-collisional plutons and extensive shear zoning and post-collisional granite intrusions. General information is presented on ten agpaitic occurrences located in southern Brazil and at the border between Brazil and Paraguay. All the Brazilian agpaitic rocks are Late Cretaceous in age, whereas the Paraguayan ones are older than Early Triassic. The most significant occurrence is Poços de Caldas, the largest alkaline massif in South America. In general, these agpaitic rocks contain mineral assemblages that indicate presence of typical halogen-bearing Na–Ca–HFSE phases, eudialyte-, rinkite- and wöhlerite-group minerals being the most frequent ones. However, these associations are indeed more complex in terms of composition, with accessory phases in some cases consisting of various minerals, including U–Th oxides/silicates, Nb oxides, REE–Sr–Ba bearing carbonates–fluorocarbonates–phosphates–silicates and Zr–Na rich silicates. They usually form late magmatic stage to hydrothermal/deuteric assemblages linked with coarse and fine-grained, mainly silica-undersaturated evolved rocks. The identification of paleosols is difficult when no buried horizons or lithification occur. Here, we described the identification of a possible paleosol, its characterization, and which features supported its positive diagnosis. In a construction site, a vertical cut exposed an unusual red–yellow mottling with massive structure and channels (probably faunal), in contrast with the overlying homogeneous red Oxisol with fine granular structure. A similar but more deferrified section with white–yellow mottling also occurred nearby, and both were sampled as large clods. In thin sections, many oriented clay coatings occur along channel voids, suggesting illuviation, as well as dissolving Fe nodules and Mn coatings along planar and channel voids. X-ray diffraction showed a clay dominated by kaolinite, traces of illite, and absence of gibbsite, again contrasting with the gibsitic-kaolinitic clay of the Oxisol. We confirmed the diagnosis of a Paleoultisol due to the following incompatibilities with the overlying Oxisol: (1) massive, apedal structure, and higher bulk density; (2) clay coatings indicative of illuviation as key soil-forming process; (3) low clay contents in particle-size analysis due to cementation; (4) very low organic carbon consistent with long-term inhumation; and (5) kaolinitic–illitic clay. The Vale do Curaçá and Riacho do Pontal copper districts are located within the northern part of the Archaean São Francisco Craton and represent two pulses of mineralization. The copper districts have been identified as Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold (IOCG) classes of deposits. An older metallogenic event associated with the Caraíba copper deposit, which is located in the Vale do Curaçá district, is related to Palaeoproterozoic (ca. 2 to 2.2 Ga) hydrothermal processes. A younger Neoproterozoic (ca. 750 to 570 Ma) episode of volcanism and associated plutonism is represented by the Riacho do Pontal mineral district. Seismic tomography data from across east-central Brazil show that the multiage Carajás province and Vale do Curaçá and Riacho do Pontal copper districts sit along either side of a prominent NW-trending upper lithospheric high-velocity zone. The edges of the high-velocity zone point to long-lived subparallel transcrustal structures that have been the focus of multiple reactivations and copper mineralization events. Regional gravity and magnetic maps show that the Vale do Curaçá copper district extends over an area greater than 110 km by 22 km. The magnetic and gravity values show significant variations correlated with this area. The district includes high gravity values associated with the Caraíba copper mine (>−35 mGal), which has a greater density (3.13 g/cm3) than the nonmineralized host rock density (2.98 g/cm3). The gravity anomaly signature over the Riacho do Pontal copper district is characterized by a 40-km long NW–SE trending Bouguer gravity low. The Ria4 occurrences of the Riacho do Pontal copper district are situated in these regional low-gravity domains. Data from regional airborne magnetic and ground gravity surveys were inverted to obtain a 3D magnetic susceptibility and density model, respectively, for the known districts. The results show that the Caraíba deposit is characterized by a both dense and magnetic source showing structural control by thrust shear zones. The 2D and 3D geological models show two main NNW prospective trends. Trends I and II have a sigmoidal shear shape and are positioned in the contact zone between domains with high magnetic susceptibility (SI > 0.005) and density > 0 g/cm3). Trend I is 40 km × 10 km in size and hosts the Caraíba, Surubim, and Vermelho copper mines and other minor deposits. The results obtained from the 3D magnetic inversion model for the region of the Riacho do Pontal district show weak magnetic anomaly highs extending along a NW–SE magnetic gradient trend. The gradient is related to mapped shear zones that overprint older and deeper NE–SW features of the São Francisco cratonic root. The area includes high gravity values associated with the Caraíba copper deposit, which has a greater density (3.13 g/cm3) than the nonmineralized host rock density (2.4 g/cm3). The Quadrilátero Ferrífero region is located in the extreme southeast of the Brasiliano São Francisco craton, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. It is composed of (i) Archean TTG granite-gneaissic terranes; (ii) the Archean Rio das Velhas greenstone belt; (iii) the Proterozoic metasedimentary and metavolcano-sedimentary covers. The Rio das Velhas rocks were deposited in the synformal NW–SE-directed Nova Lima basin. The Archean deformation converted the Nova Lima basin into an ample synclinorium with an eastern inverted flank. Archean orogenic gold mineralization within the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt rocks is controlled by NNW–SSE-directed, Archean regional shear zones subparallel to the strata of the Nova Lima synclinorium borders. Transamazonian and Brasiliano orogenies are superposed onto the Archean structures that control gold mineralization. In the eastern domain, Brasiliano fold-and-fault belts prevail, whereas in the western domain Archean and Transamazonian structures abound. The present study focus mainly is the western domain where the Cuiabá, Morro Velho, Raposos, Lamego and Faria deposits are located. Gold orebodies plunge to the E–NE and are tectonically controlled by the Archean D1–D2 deformation. The D3 Transamazonian compression—Which had a SE–NW vector sub-parallel to the regional mineralized Archean foliation/bedding—Buckled these structures, resulting in commonly open, synformal and antiformal regional folds. These are well documented near the gold deposits, with NE–SW axial traces and fold axes plunging to E–NE. Such folds are normal to inverted, NW-verging, with an axial planar foliation dipping moderately to the SE. The Transamazonian compression has only been responsible for the reorientation of the mineralized Archean gold ores, due to coaxial refolding characterized by an opposite tectonic transport. It has therefore not caused any other significant changes. Thrust shear zones, sub-parallel to the strong Transamazonian foliation, have given rise to localized metric segmentation and to the dislocation of gold orebodies. Throughout the region, along the towns of Nova Lima to Sabará, structures pertaining to the Brasiliano Araçuaí orogeny are represented only by gentle folding and by a discrete, non-pervasive crenulation cleavage. Mg clay minerals are usually associated with carbonates in alkaline-saline environments, precipitated from solution and/or transformation from other minerals. The aim of this research is to identify the mineralogy and geochemistry of clay minerals in different alkaline lakes in the Nhecolândia region, the southernmost region of the Pantanal wetland (Brazil). Sediment samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Water samples were analyzed, determining their main cations and anions, in order to understand their relationship with the clays. The analyses allowed classifying the water bodies as saline, oligosaline and freshwater lakes. The sediments are composed mainly of quartz and a fine-clay fraction, dominated by illite, kaolinite and smectite. The XRD results showed illite and smectite mixed-layered in the saline lakes at Barranco Alto farm, whereas at Nhumirim farm, trioctahedral smectite was only observed in one lake. The smectite minerals were normally identified coupled with calcite at the top of the sequences, associated with exopolymeric substances (EPS) in the lakes, suggesting that these minerals are precipitating due to the physical-chemical and biological conditions of the water bodies. Phase transitions of Mg2TiO4 and Fe2TiO4 were examined up to 28 GPa and 1600 °C using a multianvil apparatus. The quenched samples were examined by powder X-ray diffraction. With increasing pressure at high temperature, spinel-type Mg2TiO4 decomposes into MgO and ilmenite-type MgTiO3 which further transforms to perovskite-type MgTiO3. At ~21 GPa, the assemblage of MgTiO3 perovskite + MgO changes to 2MgO + TiO2 with baddeleyite (or orthorhombic I)-type structure. Fe2TiO4 undergoes transitions similar to Mg2TiO4 with pressure: spinel-type Fe2TiO4 dissociates into FeO and ilmenite-type FeTiO3 which transforms to perovskite-type FeTiO3. Both of MgTiO3 and FeTiO3 perovskites change to LiNbO3-type phases on release of pressure. In Fe2TiO4, however, perovskite-type FeTiO3 and FeO combine into calcium titanate-type Fe2TiO4 at ~15 GPa. The formation of calcium titanate-type Fe2TiO4 at high pressure may be explained by effects of crystal field stabilization and high spin–low spin transition in Fe2+ in the octahedral sites of calcium titanate-type Fe2TiO4. It is inferred from the determined phase relations that some of Fe2TiO4-rich titanomagnetite inclusions in diamonds recently found in São Luiz, Juina, Brazil, may be originally calcium titanate-type Fe2TiO4 at pressure above ~15 GPa in the transition zone or lower mantle and transformed to spinel-type in the upper mantle conditions. The study aimed to employ a comprehensive methodology for the acid processing of a rare earth element (REE) concentrate obtained from the ore from Araxá (MG-Brazil). The most important process variables have been identified and their levels determined to maximize REE extraction (%RE) and minimize Fe extraction (%Fe). The thermodynamic analysis showed that the roasting temperature (TF) is crucial for the control of Fe solubilization in the aqueous leaching step of the acid processing. A statistic design of laboratory experiments and a process optimization method were applied to address the interaction among the process variables. Experimental results showed that a TF of about 700 °C can significantly reduce the Fe concentration in the aqueous leaching liquor. Mathematical models were proposed to predict the effect of process variable on REE and Fe extraction of the concentrate. A multi-objective technique was employed for optimization of chemical processing and the best conditions were reached for roasting temperature (TF) = 700 °C, acid to sample mass ratio (ACs) = 0.8 and leaching time (tL) = 20 min, which led to %RE = 96.91% and %Fe = 21.69%. The Boqueirão granitic pegmatite, alias Alto da Cabeça pegmatite, is situated in Borborema Pegmatitic Province (BPP) in Northeast Brazil. This pegmatitic province hosts globally important reserves of tantalum and beryllium, as well as significant quantities of gemstones, including aquamarine, morganite, and the high-quality turquoise-blue "Paraíba Elbaite". The studied lithium-cesium-tantalum Boqueirão granitic pegmatite intruded meta-conglomerates of the Equador Formation during the late Cambrian (502.1 ± 5.8 Ma; 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of muscovite). The pegmatite exhibits a typical zonal mineral pattern with four defined zones (Zone I: muscovite, tourmaline, albite, and quartz; Zone II: K-feldspar (microcline), quartz, and albite; Zone III: perthite crystals (blocky feldspar zone); Zone IV: massive quartz). Huge individual beryl, spodumene, tantalite, and cassiterite crystals are common as well. Microscopic examinations revealed that melt inclusions were entrapped simultaneously with fluid inclusions, suggesting the magmatic–hydrothermal transition. The magmatic–hydrothermal transition affected the evolution of the pegmatite, segregating volatile compounds (H2O, CO2, N2) and elements that preferentially partition into a fluid phase from the viscous silicate melt. Fluid inclusion studies on microcline and associated quartz combined with microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy gave an insight into the P-T-X characteristics of entrapped fluids. The presence of spodumene without other LiAl(SiO3)2 polymorphs and constructed fluid inclusion isochores limited the magmatic–hydrothermal transition at the gem-bearing Boqueirão granitic pegmatite to the temperature range between 300 and 415 °C at a pressure from 1.8 to 3 kbar.
