The DL deposit is a typical tabular-shaped U deposit hosted in sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous Yaojia Formation in the southwestern Songliao Basin, northeast China. Owing to its recent discovery, the origin of the deposit remains unclear. In this study, mineralogical and geochemical data were used to constrain the genesis of the DL deposit. Two sources of U were recognized: (1) pre-ore U enrichment in the Yaojia Formation during diagenesis; and (2) the provenance of the Yaojia Formation, which comprises late Permian–Early Cretaceous granitic rocks from the southern Great Xing'an Range and northern margin of the North China Craton, rather than the oils and diabase dikes in the study area. Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics indicate that organic matter (OM) in the Yaojia Formation was derived mainly from plant debris and hydrocarbons. In situ S isotope data for pyrite from the ore-bearing sandstones show that most of the pyrite has similar δ34S values (−43.8‰ to −20.6‰) to those of pyrite associated with bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). The pyrite is often typically replaced and/or overgrown by pitchblende, which has a high P2O5 content (0.07–1.64 wt.%), indicative of a genetic relationship between BSR and U mineralization. Uranium can be found in the Earth's crust in different reservoirs, with igneous rocks being the primary source of this element from which many types of secondary deposits are formed. Fluorspar deposits generally do not contain uranium, but in some cases, fluorite can carry both uranium in solid solutions and inclusions of uranium minerals. We studied the concentration (ICP-MS), composition (electronic microprobe), and spatial distribution (microscopy and auto-radiography) of elemental uranium and uranium minerals at different scales (microscopy and auto-radiography in fluorite from the La Azul fluorspar deposit (Taxco, Mexico) to assess the origin of uranium and its significance in this ore deposit. Auto-radiography images with the CR-39 detector were found to be impressive in their ability to elucidate uranium distribution at the millimeter scale. The limit between the solid solution of elemental uranium in natural fluorite and the appearance of uranium oxides as inclusions appeared to be between 20 μg g−1 and 40 μg g−1 bulk uranium concentration in this fluorspar ore. The maximum concentration of U in fluorite from the La Azul deposit was about 100 μg g−1. Using Raman spectroscopy and microprobe analysis, we identified the micro-inclusions of uranium minerals as uraninite (of the pitchblende variety); its composition suggested a hydrothermal origin for this fluorspar deposit. We also calculated a chemical age that can be compared with the previously published regional geology and isotopic (U-Th-Sm)/He ages in fluorite. Micro-thermometric studies of fluid inclusions were carried out in different samples of uranium-rich fluorite to identify the nature and origin of the mineralizing fluid and the precipitation mechanisms of uranium minerals. We concluded that the uranium-rich fluorite precipitated in the initial phases of mineralization from a reducing fluid, with low salinity (<8% NaCl eq.) and an intermediate temperature (110–230 °C), and that the presence of organic compounds and sulfides (mainly pyrite) favored the simultaneous precipitation of uraninite (pitchblende variety) and fluorite. The presence of uranium in groundwater is a cause of concern all over the world. In mineralized regions where elevated concentrations of uranium are possible in groundwater, mining activities can further degrade the water quality. Hence, it is essential to document the baseline uranium concentration in groundwater before the commencement of mining. This study was carried out with the objective of assessing the concentration of uranium in groundwater around a proposed uraninite mining site in the Gogi region, Karnataka, India. Gogi is a village in the Yadgir district of Karnataka where groundwater is the main source of water for domestic needs. The uranium mineralized zone in this region occurs along the major E-W trending Gogi-Kurlagere fault at a depth of about 150 m. Groundwater samples were collected every three months from January 2020 to October 2020 from 52 wells located in this area. The concentration of uranium in groundwater ranged from 1.5 ppb to 267 ppb. The USEPA and WHO have recommended a permissible limit of 30 ppb, while the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India has a limit of 60 ppb for the purpose of drinking water. Based on these permissible limits for uranium in drinking water, concentrations exceeded the limit in about 25% of wells within 20 km from the mineralized region. Wells present in the granitic and limestone terrain exhibited higher concentrations of uranium in this area. Uranium concentration in groundwater changes depending on the degree of weathering, lithology, and rainfall recharge. This study will serve as a baseline and will help to assess the impact of mining activities in this region in the future. In wells where the uranium concentration exceeds permissible limits, it is suggested not to use groundwater directly for drinking purposes. The intracratonic Paleoproterozoic Nonacho Basin, deposited on the western margin of the Rae craton, contains historic polymetallic (i.e., U, Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Ag) occurrences spatially associated with its unconformable contact with underlying crystalline basement rocks and regionally occurring faults. This study presents the paragenesis, mineral chemistry and geochemistry of uranium mineralized rocks and minerals of the MacInnis Lake sub-basin of the Nonacho Basin, to evaluate the style and relative timing of uranium mineralization. Mineralization is restricted to regionally occurring deformation zones, and post-dates widely spread and pervasive albitization and more local Ba-rich K-feldspar alteration of host rocks. Uranium mineralized rocks show elevated concentration of Cu, Ag and Au relative to variably altered host rocks. Microscopic and compositionally heterogeneous altered uraninite occurs (i) as overgrowths on partially dissolved Cu-sulphides with magnetite in chlorite ± quartz, calcite veins, and (ii) with minor uranophane in hematite-sericite-chlorite ± quartz breccia and stockwork. Both uraninite types are Th poor (<0.09 wt.% ThO2) and variably rich in SO4 (up to 2.26 wt.%), suggesting a low-temperature hydrothermal origin in a relatively oxidized environment. Rare-earth element (+Y) concentrations in type-i uraninite are high, up to 9.5 wt.% Σ(REE+Y)2O3 with CeN/YN values > 1, similar to REE compositions of uraninite in metasomatic iron and alkali-calcic systems (MIAC), including low-temperature hematite-type IOCG-deposits (e.g., Olympic Dam, Gawler Craton, Australia) and albitite-hosted uranium deposits (e.g., Southern Breccia, Great Bear Magmatic Zone, Canada, and Gunnar Deposit, Beaverlodge District, Canada). Both uraninite types are variably rich in Ba (up to 3 wt.% BaO), a geochemical marker for MIAC systems, provided by the dissolution of earlier secondary Ba-rich K-feldspar. Chemical U-Th-Pb dating yields resetting ages of <875 ± 35 Ma for type-ii uraninite-uranophane, younger than strike-slip movement along regional structures of the basin that are spatially associated with the uranium occurrences. We suggest that MacInnis Lake uranium occurrences formed from oxidized hydrothermal fluids along previously altered (albitized, potassically altered) regional-scale faults. Uranium minerals precipitated on earlier Fe-rich sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite), which acted as a redox trap for mineralization, in low-temperature (~310–330 °C, based on Al-in-chlorite thermometry) breccias and stockwork zones, late in a metasomatic iron and alkali-calcic alteration system. In the process of acid in situ leaching of sandstone uranium ore, pyrite, which is a common associated mineral of pitchblende, would inevitably participate in the reaction. Therefore, it is important to study the influence of pyrite on the leaching kinetics of pitchblende. In this study, we compared the difference leaching rates of pitchblende in the systems of sulfuric acid–hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid–hydrogen peroxide–pyrite and sulfuric acid–pyrite and studied the influence of temperature and pyrite quantity on the leaching rate of pitchblende. The results show that the leaching process of pitchblende follows the shrinking particle model controlled by a chemical reaction, and the apparent activation energy Ea of the leaching reaction is (3.74 ± 0.40) × 10 kJ/mol. Pyrite itself cannot promote the dissolution of pitchblende; however, it can promote the leaching of pitchblende in the presence of an oxidizer. Increasing the quantity of pyrite in a certain range can increase the leaching rate of pitchblende, and the reaction order of pyrite is 0.36. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Uraniferous bitumens found in black shales from the Permian rocks at Vrchlabí in the Krkonoše Piedmont Basin (Czech Republic) were described and characterized petrologically and mineralogically. The Permian sediments originated from weathering products in metasediments and granitoids of the Krkonoše–Jizera and Orlice–Sněžník crystalline complexes. The organic matter contained up to 4.8 wt.% uranium, as uraninite grains. Elements associated with uraninite, such as Pb, Zr, Cu, and As, may have accumulated from epigenetic fluids in layers rich in organic matter during their late diagenesis. The bitumen structures were extremely heterogeneous, a feature attributed to the radiolytic effects of uranium. Amorphous bitumens, alternating with various forms of nodular and corroded bitumen types from multiple generations, were present. Low and highly altered bitumens with weak anisotropy were recognized, together with halo zones, with reflectance up to 4.37%. The halo zones differed in size, brightness, and reflectance, increasing from the edge to the center. Halos often revealed dark rims between uraninite inclusions and clear zones, originating probably as a result of weaker alterations in organic matter due to the presence of other inorganic components. Uranium concentration was the main factor controlling the degree of radiolytic alteration. The Peräpohja belt comprises a greenschist to amphibolite facies; multiply-folded supracrustal sequence of quartzites; mafic volcanics; carbonate rocks; black shales; mica schists and greywackes deposited from ca. 2.44 Ga to 1.92 Ga; during protracted rifting of the Archaean basement. Metamorphism and multiple folding of the basin fill occurred during the Svecofennian orogeny (1.92-1.80 Ga). The Rompas Au-U mineralization is hosted within deformed and metamorphosed calcsilicate veins in mafic volcanics. Textural evidence suggests that deposition and periods of uraninite re-mobilization were followed by localized hydrocarbon-bearing fluid flow which produced pyrobitumen crusts around grains of uraninite. Gold precipitated during the latest hydrothermal event at around 1.75 Ga. In situ U-Pb dating of uraninite by laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS), and Re-Os dating of molybdenite, indicate that primary hydrothermal uranium mineralization forms two age clusters; about 2.03-2.01 and 1.95-1.94 Ga. Resetting of the U-Pb system and precipitation of new generations of uraninite are associated with major deformation and metamorphic stages of the Svecofennian orogeny at 1.91-1.89 Ga, 1.85 Ga, and 1.80 Ga. Gold deposition was synchronous with the emplacement of the 1.75-1.78 Ga late/post-orogenic granitoids. The gold-producing hydrothermal event is also recorded by Re-Os dating of molybdenite from the gold-bearing Mg-metasomatized metasedimentary and metavolcanic units at the Palokas prospect; a few kilometres from Rompas. Results of this study confirm that some domains in the structure of uraninite may preserve the original crystallization age, despite an overprinting amphibolite facies metamorphic and other hydrothermal events. The study supports the utility of in situ U-Pb dating of uraninite and the ability of Re-Os dating to assist in sorting out different hydrothermal events in areas with complex tectonic; magmatic and metamorphic histories. New mineralogical data are presented for shear-zone hosted uranium mineralisation from selected uranium deposits that occur in the Bohemian Massif. The uranium mineralisation is in high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Moldanubian Zone and/or in granitic rocks of the Moldanubian batholith and Bor pluton as complex uraninite-coffinite and uraninite-coffinite-brannerite assemblages. For analysed coffinites and brannerites, anomalous enrichment of Y (up to 3.4 wt % Y2O3) and Zr (up to 13.8 wt % ZrO2) is significant. The microprobe data indicate that coffinites from the Rožná and Okrouhlá Radouň uranium deposits contain variable PbO (0-4.3 wt %), FeO (0-2.5 wt %), Al2O3 (0-3.5 wt %), P2O5 (0-1.8 wt %), and CaO (0.7-3.5 wt %). Brannerite is present in unaltered and altered grains with variable concentrations of U4+ (0-0.5 apfu), U6+ (0.06-0.49 apfu), Ti (0.90-2.63 apfu), Ca (0.09-0.41 apfu), and low concentrations of Al (0-0.19 apfu), Th (0-0.04 apfu), Y (0-0.08 apfu), Zr (0-0.13 apfu) and REE (0-0.14 apfu). The Mianhuakeng deposit is the most representative granite-related hydrothermal vein-type uranium deposit in South China; however, the characteristics of the mineralization-forming fluid and metallogenic mechanism are still less constrained. To address the scientific problems above, we investigated the trace element chemistry and sulfur isotope compositions in syn-mineralization pyrite and pitchblende from the Mianhuakeng uranium deposit. The trace element chemistry shows that the mineralization in the Mianhuakeng deposit belongs to an intermediate-to-low temperature hydrothermal system, which is consistent with the homogenization temperature distribution of fluid inclusions. Redox-sensitive elements (such as Co and Se) in syn-mineralization pyrite suggest a reductive nature of the mineralization-forming fluids. The fractionation between light and heavy REE in pitchblende from the Mianhuakeng deposit is most similar to those from the Changjiang pluton. The pronounced negative Eu anomaly is coincident with mineralization-bearing granites. The δ34S values of syn-mineralization pyrite range from −10.2 to −1.4‰, which is higher than those values of pyrite from granites near the studied area and lower than the δ34S values of pyrite from diabase in the ore district. The REE signatures of pitchblende and sulfur isotope composition of syn-mineralization pyrite suggest that the major U source for the Mianhuakeng deposit is most likely the Changjiang pluton, probably accompanied by the incorporation of mantle-derived fluids. The circulations of CO2-rich hydrothermal fluids leached uranium from granite source rocks, especially from the Changjiang pluton. The change of physicochemical conditions of the mineralization-forming fluid resulted in the deposition of the uranium minerals in favorable structural traps to form the hydrothermal vein-type Mianhuakeng uranium deposit. Surface encrustation by minerals, which impedes cellular metabolism, is a potential hazard for microbes. The reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) by Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 leads to the precipitation of the mineral uraninite, as well as a non-crystalline U(IV) product. The wild-type (WT) strain can produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), prompting precipitation of U some distance from the cells and precluding encrustation. Using cryo-transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy we show that, in the biofilm-deficient mutant ΔmxdA, as well as in the WT strain to a lesser extent, we observe the formation of membrane vesicles (MVs) as an additional means to lessen encrustation. Additionally, under conditions in which the WT does not produce EPS, formation of MVs was the only observed mechanism to mitigate cell encrustation. Viability studies comparing U-free controls to cells exposed to U showed a decrease in the number of viable cells in conditions where MVs alone are detected, yet no loss of viability when cells produce both EPS and MVs. We conclude that MV formation is a microbial strategy to shed encrusted cell surfaces but is less effective at maintaining cell viability than the precipitation of U on EPS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Megacrystalline uraninite (up to one centimeter in size) represents one of the most important discoveries in uranium mineralogy in the western margin of the Yangtze Block and even in China in recent years. However, the genesis of megacrystalline uraninite remains controversial. In this study, the megacrystalline uraninite found in the felsic and quartz veins in the Haita area is examined for the first time. The study examined the geochemical characteristics of uraninite in the two veins and resulted in two primary findings. (1) The genesis of the uraninite was likely intrusive and was closely related to partial melting. (2) The quartz vein and feldspar vein are cogenetic and have a simple differentiation evolution relationship. Therefore, the partial melting of felsic materials during migmatization may be the most important mechanism of uranium mineralization in the study area. Furthermore, further simple fractional crystallization may be another important mechanism for the formation of megacrystalline uraninite. The Datian uranium deposit is a migmatite-hosted, high temperature, hydrothermal deposit in the Kangdian region. Detailed information on the chemical composition and formation age of the uraninite remains lacking, which impedes our understanding of uraninite genesis. Two phases of uraninite have been identified according to their relationships with other minerals and their field relationships. The phase 1 (Ur1) uraninite is characterized by local development of microfractures and pores in the crystal of uraninite, a scattered distribution, and irregular crystal shapes, and it is associated with ilmenite, biotite, and rare earth element (REE) minerals (monazite and xenotime). The phase 2 uraninite (Ur2) has anhedral crystal shapes with well-developed microfractures and pores and is associated with pyrite, albite, pyrrhotite, molybdenite, zircon, and chlorite. X-ray element mapping revealed that the distributions of U, Th, and Pb in the Ur1 uraninite are homogeneous, whereas those in the Ur2 uraninite are heterogeneous. The results of the electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) show that the UO2 and PbO contents of the Ur1 and Ur2 uraninite do not vary significantly. The high ThO2 contents of the Ur1 (1.08–1.68 wt %) and Ur2 uraninite (3.41–4.83 wt %) indicate that they formed at different temperatures. The laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis results show that the ∑REE of the Ur1 uraninite (3747.5–7032.3 ppm) is lower than that of the Ur2 uraninite (8369.2–11,484.3 ppm), and the REE patterns of the Ur1 and Ur2 uraninite are sickle-shaped with large negative Eu anomalies. The LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating results revealed that the ages of the Ur1 (841.4 ± 4.0 Ma) and Ur2 (834.5 ± 4.1 Ma–837.2 ± 4.5 Ma) uraninite are in consistent with that of the migmatite. Thus, the Datian uranium deposit underwent at least two hydrothermal events, and the uraninite was formed due to the migmatization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Guangshigou deposit is the largest pegmatite-type uranium deposit in the Shangdan domain of the North Qinling Orogenic Belt, which is characterized by the enrichment of uraninite hosted in biotite granitic pegmatites. At Guangshigou, uraninite commonly occurs as mineral inclusions in quartz, K-feldspar and biotite or in interstices of these rock-forming minerals with magmatic characteristics (e.g., U/Th < 100, high ThO2, Y2O3 and REE2O3 contents and low concentrations of CaO, FeO and SiO2). It crystallized at 407.6 ± 2.9 Ma from fractionated calc-alkaline high-K pegmatitic melts under conditions of 470–700 °C and 2.4–3.4 kbar as deduced by the compositions of coexisting peritectic biotite. The primary uranium mineralization took place during the Late Caledonian post-collisional extension in the North Qinling Orogen. After this magmatic event, uraninite has experienced multiple episodes of fluid-assisted metasomatism, which generated an alteration halo of mineral assemblages. The alteration halo (or radiohalo) was the result of the combined effects of metamictization and metasomatism characterized by an assemblage of goethite, coffinite and an unidentified aluminosilicate (probably clay minerals) around altered uraninite. This fluid-assisted alteration was concomitant with the albitization of K-feldspar subsequently followed by the coffinitization of uraninite during the major period of 84.9–143.6 Ma, as determined by U-Th-Pb chemical ages. Further investigations revealed that the metasomatic overprinting on uraninite initially and preferentially took place along microcracks or cavities induced by metamictization and promoted their amorphization, followed by the release of U and Pb from structure and the incorporation of K, Ca and Si from the fluids, finally resulting in various degrees of uraninite coffinitization. The released U and Pb were transported by alkali-rich, relatively oxidizing fluids and then re-precipitated locally as coffinite and an amorphous U-Pb-rich silicate under low to moderate temperature conditions (85–174 °C). The compositional changes in primary uraninite, its structure amorphization together with the paragenetic sequence of secondary phases, therefore, corroborate a combined result of intense metamictization of uraninite and an influx of alkali–metasomatic fluids during the Late Mesozoic Yanshanian magmatic event in the region. Hence, the remobilization and circulation of uranium in the North Qinling Orogen was most likely driven by post-Caledonian magmatism and hydrothermal activities related to large-scale tectonic events. In this regards, Paleozoic pegmatite-type uranium mineralization may represent a significant uranium source for Mesozoic hydrothermal mineralization identified in the Qinling Orogenic Belt. An occurrence of vein U-Mo mineralization is located in the Majerská valley near Čučma, about 7 km to the NNE of the district town of Rožňava (Eastern Slovakia). Mineralization is hosted in the acidic metapyroclastics of the Silurian Bystrý Potok Fm. (Gemeric Unit), and originated in the following stages: (I.) quartz I, fluorapatite I; (II.) quartz II, fluorapatite II, zircon, rutile chlorite, tourmaline; (III.) uraninite, molybdenite, U-Ti oxides; (IV.) pyrite I, ullmannite, gersdorffite, cobaltite; (Va.) galena, bismuth, tetradymite, joséite A and B, Bi3(TeS)2 mineral phase, (BiPb)(TeS) mineral phase, ikunolite; (Vb.) minerals of the kobellite–tintinaite series, cosalite; (VI.) pyrite II; (VII.) titanite, chlorite; and (VIII.) supergene mineral phases. The chemical in-situ electron-microprobe U-Pb dating of uraninite from a studied vein yielded an average age of around 265 Ma, corresponding to the Guadalupian Epoch of Permian; the obtained data corresponds with the age of Gemeric S-type granites. The age correlation of uraninite with the Gemeric S-type granites and the spatial connection of the studied mineralization with the Čučma granite allows us to assume that it is a Hercynian, granite-related (perigranitic) mineralization. Pegmatite-type uranium mineralization occurs in the Shangdan domain of the North Qinling Orogenic Belt, representing a significant uraniferous province. The Guangshigou deposit is the largest U deposit of the district. Within the North Qinling area, a series of Caledonian granitic igneous rocks intruded the Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Qinling Group in two magmatic stages: (i) the Early Silurian Huichizi granite that was derived from a low degree of partial melting of thickened lower basaltic crust combined with mantle-derived materials following the subduction of the Shangdan Ocean; and (ii) the Late Silurian–Early Devonian Damaogou granite and associated pegmatites derived from the same source but emplaced in a late tectonic post-collisional extension environment. In the Guangshigou deposit, the U mineralization mainly occurs as uraninite disseminated in U-rich granitic biotite pegmatites, which formed by assimilation-fractional crystallization magmatic processes. Petrographic observations showed evidence for coeval crystallization of uraninite and other rock-forming minerals of the host pegmatite including quartz, feldspar, biotite, zircon, monazite, apatite, and xenotime. In addition, the low U/Th ratios (~19) and Th, REE, and Y enrichments characterized a magmatic origin for uraninite, which was likely derived from fractionated high-K calc-alkaline pegmatitic magma that experienced various degrees of crustal material contamination. In situ U-Pb isotopic dating performed by Secondary-Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) on uraninite from the Guangshigou deposit yielded a crystallization age of 412 ± 3 Ma, which is concomitant (within errors) with the emplacement age of the host pegmatite (415 ± 2 Ma) and constrained the U ore genesis to the Early Devonian, which corresponds to the late Caledonian post-collisional extension in the North Qinling area. Uraninite then experienced various degrees of metamictization and/or post-Caledonian hydrothermal alteration characterized by an alteration rim associated with coffinite, chlorite and limonite. Finally, the characteristics of the pegmatite-related Guangshigou deposit exhibiting Th-rich uraninite which was the product of assimilation-fractional crystallization of pegmatitic magma defined a model significantly different than the one established for the world-class Rössing deposit characterized by Th-poor uraninite hosted in alaskite dykes formed by low degree of partial melting of U-rich metasediments. A comprehensive study of monazite–cheralite–huttonite solid solutions (s.s.) and xenotime from the highly evolved, strongly peraluminous P–F–Li-rich Podlesí granite stock in the Krušné Hory Mts., Czech Republic, indicates that, with the increasing degree of magmatic and high-T early post-magmatic evolution, the content of the cheralite component in monazite increases and the relative dominance of middle rare earth elements (MREE) in xenotime becomes larger. Considering the overall compositional signatures of these two accessory minerals in the late Variscan granites of the Erzgebirge/Krušné Hory Mts., three types of granites can be distinguished: (i) chemically less evolved F-poor S(I)- and A-type granites contain monazite with a smooth, mostly symmetric chondrite-normalized (CN) rare-earth elements (REE) pattern gradually declining from La to Gd; associated xenotime is Y-rich (˃0.8 apfu Y) with a flat MREE–HREE (heavy rare earth elements) pattern; (ii) fractionated A-type granites typically contain La-depleted monazite with Th accommodated as the huttonite component, combined with usually Y-poor (0.4–0.6 apfu Y) xenotime characterized by a smoothly inclining, Yb–Lu-dominant CN-REE pattern; (iii) fractionated peraluminous Li-mica granites host monazite with a flat, asymmetric (kinked at La and Nd) CN-LREE pattern, with associated xenotime distinctly MREE (Gd–Tb–Dy)-dominant. Monazite and xenotime account for the bulk of the REE budgets in all types of granite. In peraluminous S(I)-type granites, which do not bear thorite, almost all Th is accommodated in monazite–cheralite s.s. In contrast, Th budgets in A-type granites are accounted for by monazite–huttonite s.s. together with thorite. The largest portion of U is accommodated in uraninite, if present. The Bigrlyi deposit is a tabular, sandstone-hosted, uranium–vanadium deposit of Carboniferous age located in the Ngalia Basin of central Australia. The deposit is similar to the continental, fluvial Saltwash-type of sandstone-hosted U-V deposits which are well known from the Colorado Plateau, USA. Most mineralization at Bigrlyi occurs as thin, multiple-stacked, stratiform lenses at the base of fluvial channels near the contact between a grey sandstone succession and a hematitic, purple–red sandstone succession. A larger halo of lower grade vanadium mineralization extends beyond the main U-V-mineralized zone. The host is an immature, feldspathic sandstone, grading into arkose and lithic-rich variants. Lithic 'rip-up' clasts of clay-rich sediments are common in the basal parts of fluvial channels, and are frequently the focus of, and have acted as sites for, U-V mineralization. Coffinite and uraninite are the main uranium minerals, with the former dominant. Vanadium is mainly hosted by Fe-V-bearing clays and chlorite, including roscoelite, grading into vanadian illite, the interlayer mineral corrensite, and altered detrital biotite. The V-Fe–oxyhydroxide minerals montroseite, haggite and doloresite, and altered detrital Fe-Ti oxides, are minor V-hosts. Mineralized zones correlate with enrichments in Se, Li, Ba, Be, Mo, Mg and Fe, and elevated Se/S ratios are characteristic of U-mineralized zones. Petrographic studies show that a heterogeneous mixture of variably mineralized lithic clasts is present; in the same rock, some clasts are Fe-rich and only weakly U-V-mineralized, while other clasts are strongly V- and/or U-mineralized. These observations point to mineralization processes that did not take place in-situ in the host sandstone at the site of deposition as required by conventional groundwater models. Lead isotope results provide evidence of the open-system mobility of radiogenic elements in parts of the deposit. In V-bearing zones, radiogenic Pb contents were found to be unsupported by current U levels, suggesting that over time U has been mobilized from these zones and redistributed, resulting in U-enrichment in other parts of the deposit. Mobility pathways were likely open over time from early in the history of the Bigrlyi deposit. A hybrid mineralization model, involving an interplay between solution-precipitation processes, detrital transport and post-depositional U remobilization, is proposed for Bigrlyi. The Bohemian magmatic complex belongs to granitoid plutons of the Central European Variscides. Hydrothermal uranium mineralization evolved in the small uranium deposits Nahošín and Mečichov is associated with N–S shear zones occurring on the SW margin of the Central Bohemian plutonic complex formed by amphibole-bearing biotite granodiorites of the Blatná suite. The purpose of presented study is description of uranium mineralization bounded on brittle shear zones, which is coupled with intense low-temperature hydrothermal alteration of granitic rocks. Uranium mineralization, formed predominantly of coffinite, rare uraninite, and thorite, is accompanied by intense hematitization, albitization, chloritization, and carbonatization of original granitic rocks that could be described as aceites. These alterations are accompanied by the enrichment in U, Ti, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Y, and Zr and depletion in Si, Ba, and Sr. The analyzed coffinite is enriched in Y (up to 3.1 wt % Y2O3). Uraninite is enriched in Th (up to 9.8 wt % ThO2) and thorite is enriched in Zr (up to 5.7 wt % ZrO2). The REE-elements are concentrated in the REE-fluorcarbonate synchysite-(Ce). Systematic study of the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is necessary to improve the uranium ore extracting process. The presented work aims to argue geochemistry and acid hydrometallurgy accessibility of uraninite from the Mianhuakeng (MHK) granite-hosted uranium deposit, South China, which provides insight on this ore extracting domain. Mineralogy, geochemical composition, U–Th–Pb chemical age, and uranium deportment of the uraninite were systematically analyzed by using scanning electron microscope with energy dispersion spectrum (SEM-EDS), an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that uraninite was intergrowth with coffinite, probably due to uraninite being partly metasomatized into coffinite along the fissures. The major element content of uraninite such as for UO2, SiO2, and CaO were 79.46 ± 2.03 wt%, 6.19 ± 1.36 wt%, and 5.09 ± 0.80 wt%, respectively. Single-point U–Th–Pb chemical ages for uraninite grains were calculated with the EPMA data, and the results showed ages ranging from a few million to dozens of million years, indicating Pb loss after uraninite formed. Uranium deportment in uraninite generally existed in the forms of UO2, U3O8, and UO3, and mostly showed high valence states suggested by XPS. Uranium on the surface of the uraninite grain was partially oxidized by sulfuric acid leaching, which led to tetravalent uranium converting to hexavalent uranium, suggesting uraninite in the MHK uranium deposit is accessible to be leached by sulfuric acid. A new organically templated uranyl molybdate [C3H9NH+]4[(UO2)3(MoO4)5] was prepared by a hydrothermal method at 220 °C. The compound is monoclinic, Сс, a = 16.768(6), b = 20.553(8), c = 11.897(4) Å, β = 108.195(7), V = 3895(2) Å3, R1 = 0.05. The crystal structure is based upon [(UO2)3(MoO4)5]4− uranyl molybdate layers. The isopropylammonium cations are located in the interlayer. The layers in the structure of [C3H9NH+]4[(UO2)3(MoO4)5] are considered as modular architectures. Topological analysis of layers with UO2:TO4 ratio of 3:5 (TVI = S, Cr, Se, Mo) was performed. Modular description is employed to elucidate the relationships between different structural topologies of [(UO2)3(TO4)5]4− layers and inorganic uranyl-based nanotubules. The Longshoushan Metallogenic Belt (northwestern China) is known for its word-class Jinchuan Ni-Cu sulfide (Pt) deposit and is also an important uranium metallogenic belt. The Jiling uranium deposit in this belt is a typical Na-metasomatic uranium deposit, which rarely occurs in China. Mineralization in the Jiling uranium deposit is hosted in granitoids that have suffered a Na-metasomatic alteration. There are three kinds of uranium minerals, including uraninite, pitchblende, and coffinite in the Jiling uranium deposit. Pitchblende is the predominant uranium mineral. Integrating the mineralogy and geochemistry of uranium minerals, and in situ electron microprobe analyzer (EMPA) U-Th-Pb chemical dating, we aimed to unravel the age and nature of the mineralization, to decipher the characteristics of the hydrothermal alteration and the U mineralization process. Based on the microtextural features and compositional variations, primary uraninite was altered to uraninite A and B, and fresh pitchblende was altered to pitchblende A and B. The best-preserved uraninite crystals displayed a euhedral-shape with high Pb and low SiO2, CaO, FeO, and Al2O3 contents, and was interpreted as primary uraninite. The EMPA U-Th-Pb chemical ages revealed that uraninite may have formed at 435.9 ± 3.3 Ma. High ThO2 + ΣREE2O3 + Y2O3 contents illustrated that the best preserved uraninite crystallized at a high temperature. Altered pitchblende A showed a relatively brighter gray color in backscattered electron (BSE) images and with a lower SiO2 content than B. Three analysis spots of the fresh pitchblende showed low contents of ΣSiO2 + CaO, indicating no obvious alteration. EMPA U-Th-Pb chemical dating gave a mean chemical age of 361 Ma. The low Th + ΣREE2O3 contents indicated that this pitchblende formed at a relatively low temperature. According to the different characteristics of occurrence and chemical composition, the coffinite in the Jiling uranium deposit can be divided into coffinite A and B, respectively. The compositional variation of the fresh and altered uraninite and pitchblende indicated that both uraninite and pitchblende underwent at least two discrete hydrothermal fluid alterations. The U mineralization was divided into two stages; uraninite was formed at a high temperature and possibly from a magmatic-hydrothermal fluid during ore stage I. Then, pitchblende was formed at a low temperature, during ore stage II. Identification of uraninite provenance for the purpose of nuclear forensics requires a multifaceted approach. Various geochemical signatures, such as chondrite normalized rare earth element patterns, help identify and limit the potential sources of uraninite based on the geological setting of the uranium ore mineralization. The inclusion of accurate age determinations to discriminate geochemical signatures for natural uranium ores may help to potentially restrict geographical areas for provenance consideration. Determining a robust age for uraninite formation is somewhat difficult, due to well known, inherent difficulties associated with open system behavior that involve either uranium and/or lead loss or gain. However, open system behavior should not perturb their Pb isotopic compositions to the same degree as Pb isotopes should not fractionate during alteration processes. Here, a suite of pristine and altered samples of uraninite was examined for their Pb isotope compositions, and these yielded geologically meaningful secondary Pb–Pb isochron ages. The degree of alteration within individual uraninite samples, which is extremely variable, does not appear to affect the calculated ages. This study reports trace element abundances and Pb, Sr, and U isotopic signatures of uraninite from a variety of ore deposits in order to establish baseline forensic information for source attribution of raw, natural U-rich samples. Trace element concentrations, reported here, provide insights into uraninite crystal substitution mechanisms and possible crustal sources of U, including mobility of trace elements between pristine versus altered fractions. Spatially resolved laser ablation (LA) multicollector (MC) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses were used to determine secondary 207Pb-206Pb isochron ages, and these were validated by corroborative results obtained by solution mode (SM) MC-ICP-MS for the same sample. Secondary Pb-Pb isochron ages obtained, in this study, indicate that uraninite alteration occurs shortly after ore mineralization. Initial 87Sr/86Sr values correlate in general with host craton age, and therefore suggest that uraninite ore formation is closely linked to the nature of the bedrock geology. The δ238U values are explained by invoking multiple physicochemical conditions and parameters such as temperature, nuclear field shift, oxidation, and source rock composition. The δ234U values indicate that the uraninites, investigated here, have undergone recent alteration, but the latter has not perturbed the Pb-Pb secondary isochron ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biotite pegmatites in the Shangdan domain of the North Qinling orogenic belt contain economic concentrations of U, constituting a low-grade, large-tonnage pegmatite-hosted uraniferous province. Uraninite is predominant and ubiquitous ore mineral and coffinite is common alteration mineral after initial deposit formation. A comprehensive survey of the uraninite and coffinite assemblage of the Chenjiazhuang, Xiaohuacha, and Guangshigou biotite pegmatites in this uraniferous province reveal the primary magmatic U mineralization and its response during subsequent hydrothermal events. Integrating the ID-TIMS (Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry) 206Pb/238U ages and U-Th-Pb chemical ages for the uraninites with those reported from previous studies suggests that the timing of U mineralization in the uraniferous province was constrained at 407–415 Ma, confirming an Early Devonian magmatic ore-forming event. Based on microtextural relationships and compositional variation, three generations of uranium minerals can be identified: uaninite-A (high Th-low U-variable Y group), uranite-B (low Th-high U, Y group), and coffinite (high Si, Ca-low U, Pb group). Petrographic and microanalytical observations support a three-stage evolution model of uranium minerals from primary to subsequent generations as follows: (1) during the Early Devonian (stage 1), U derived from the hydrous silicate melt was mainly concentrated in primary magmatic uaninite-A by high-T (450–607 °C) precipitation; (2) during the Late Devonian (stage 2), U was mobilized and dissolved from pre-existing uraninite-A by U-bearing fluids and in situ reprecipitated as uraninite-B under reduced conditions. The in situ transformation of primary uraninite-A to second uraninite-B represent a local medium-T (250–450 °C) hydrothermal U-event; and (3) during the later low-T (100–140 °C) hydrothermal alteration (stage 3), U was remobilized and derived from the dissolution of pre-existing uraninite by CO2- and SiO2-rich fluids and interacted with reducing agent (e.g., pyrite) leading to reprecipitation of coffinite. This process represents a regional and extensive low-T hydrothermal U-event. In view of this, U minerals evolved from magmatic uraninite-A though fluid-induced recrystallized uraninite-B to coffinite, revealing three episodes of U circulation in the magmatic-hydrothermal system. The chemical and isotopic (U, Pb, Sr) signatures for a suite (n = 23) of pristine (>80 wt. % UO2) and altered uraninite samples (>70–80 wt. % UO2) from various locations worldwide have been determined for the purpose of identifying potential fingerprints for nuclear forensic analysis. The characterization of the uraninite samples included determination of major, minor and trace element contents, Sr, Pb, and U isotopic compositions, and secondary mineral assemblages. Due to the multivariate approach adopted in this study, principal component analysis (PCA) has been employed to allow the direct comparison of multiple variable types. The PCA results indicate that the geological origin (sandstone, metamorphite, intrusive, granite and unconformity) of pristine uraninite can be readily identified utilizing various combinations of major and/or trace element concentrations with isotopic compositions. Uraninite-coffinite vein-type mineralisation with significant predominance of uraninite over coffinite occurs in the Příbram, Jáchymov and Horní Slavkov ore districts and the Potůčky, Zálesí and Předbořice uranium deposits. These uranium deposits are hosted by faults that are mostly developed in low- to high-grade metamorphic rocks of the basement of the Bohemian Massif. Textural features and the chemical composition of uraninite, coffinite and ningyoite were studied using an electron microprobe. Collomorphic uraninite was the only primary uranium mineral in all deposits studied. The uraninites contained variable and elevated concentrations of PbO (1.5 wt %–5.4 wt %), CaO (0.7 wt %–8.3 wt %), and SiO2 (up to 10.0 wt %), whereas the contents of Th, Zr, REE and Y were usually below the detection limits of the electron microprobe. Coffinite usually forms by gradual coffinitization of uraninite in ore deposits and the concentration of CaO was lower than that in uraninites, varying from 0.6 wt % to 6.5 wt %. Coffinite from the Jáchymov ore district was partly enriched in Zr (up to 3.3 wt % ZrO2) and Y (up to 5.5 wt % Y2O3), and from the Potůčky uranium deposit, was distinctly enriched in P (up to 8.8 wt % P2O5), occurring in association with ningyoite. The chemical composition of ningyoite was similar to that from type locality; however, ningyoite from Potůčky was distinctly enriched in REE, containing up to 22.3 wt % REE2O3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
