Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have recently drawn enormous attention due to not only their unique chemical, biological, and optical properties but also because a variety of renewable biomasses are readily utilized as carbon sources in their synthesis. This study investigated the synthesis, characterization, and functional evaluation of CQDs from unbleached mechanical pulp as a natural lignocellulosic resource. The CQDs were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal synthesis with varying temperature, time, and pulp consistency. The resulting CQDs exhibit a spherical shape with a size distribution of 9.73 ± 0.82 nm and lattice parameters of 0.21 and 0.34 nm, indicating a graphite core. The photoluminescence spectra showed evident fluorescence characteristics, with an emission peak at 435 nm at an excitation wavelength of 370 nm. The as-prepared CQDs were also chemically composed of C=C and C=O bonds linked to the hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups, which are typically found in lignocellulose-based CQDs. The CQDs demonstrated antibacterial activity exceeding 99.9% against E. coli at the lowest concentration of 0.75 mg/mL. Improving the photogenerated carrier separation efficiency of individual semiconductor materials has always been a key challenge in photocatalysis. In this study, we synthesized a novel photocatalytic material, N-CQDs/UBWO, in situ by combining nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) derived from discarded corn stover with ultrathin Bi2WO6 nanosheets (UBWO). Detailed characterization indicates that the random distribution of N-CQDs on the UBWO surface increases the specific surface area of UBWO, which is beneficial for the adsorption and degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC). More importantly, N-CQDs act as electron acceptors, promoting the effective separation of photogenerated charges, prolonging the lifetime of charge carriers in UBWO, and thereby enhancing the degradation efficiency of OTC. As a result, the optimized 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO could degrade 85% of OTC within 40 min under visible light, with a removal rate four times that of pure Bi2WO6. The performance of photocatalytic degradation over OTC by 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO exceeds that of most reported Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts. The EPR analysis confirmed that ∙O2− and ∙OH are the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of OTC on 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO. This study provides insight into designing green, low-cost, and efficient photocatalysts using CQDs derived from waste biomass and the degradation of emerging pollutants like antibiotics. The liquid-phase method is the most commonly utilized strategy for synthesizing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs). However, the liquid-phase synthesis of CQDs faces challenges such as low yield, complex purification, and the use of toxic solvents, which limit large-scale production and practical applications. In this study, fluorescent CQDs with a high product yield of 78% were synthesized using glucose as a carbon source through a green and facile one-step solid-phase approach, without solvents or post-treatment. A systematic study of the structure and fluorescence properties of the synthesized CQDs was conducted using various characterization techniques. The results indicated that the mean size of obtained CQDs was 4.1 nm, and that their surface had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in favorable water solubility. The synthesized CQDs exhibited excitation-dependent fluorescence, with optimal excitation and emission wavelengths at 358 and 455 nm, respectively. Additionally, the CQDs solution showed bright blue fluorescence under 365 nm UV light, with a quantum yield of 6.21% and a fluorescence lifetime of 3.02 ns. Approximately one-third of the world's food production, i.e., 1.43 billion tons, is wasted annually, resulting in economic losses of nearly USD 940 billion and undermining food system sustainability. This waste depletes resources, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and negatively affects food security and prices. Although traditional packaging preserves food quality, it cannot satisfy the demands of extended shelf life, safety, and sustainability. Consequently, active packaging using biopolymer matrices containing antioxidants and antimicrobials is a promising solution. This review examines the current advancements in the integration of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into biopolymer-based active packaging, focusing on their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. CQDs provide unique advantages over traditional nanoparticles and natural compounds, including high biocompatibility, tunable surface functionality, and environmental sustainability. This review explores the mechanisms through which CQDs impart antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, their synthesis methods, and their functionalization to optimize the efficacy of biopolymer matrices. Recent studies have highlighted that CQD-enhanced biopolymers maintain biodegradability with enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial functions. Additionally, potential challenges, such as toxicity, regulatory considerations, and scalability are discussed, offering insights into future research directions and industrial applications. This review demonstrates the potential of CQD-incorporated biopolymer matrices to transform active packaging, aligning with sustainability goals and advancing food preservation technologies. The present study explores the synthesis and bio-safety evaluation of gadolinium-doped carbon quantum dots (GCQDs) as a potential dual-contrast agent for diagnostic imaging. GCQDs exhibit both fluorescent and magnetic properties, making them suitable for UV–Vis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The synthesis of GCQDs was achieved via hydrothermal treatment, incorporating gadolinium into the carbon quantum dot matrix. The magnetic properties of GCQDs were analyzed, showing significantly enhanced values compared to gadobutrol, a common MRI contrast agent. However, synthesis constraints limit the gadolinium content achievable in nanodots. To assess the safety of GCQDs, their effects on the embryonic development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) were examined. Various concentrations of GCQDs were tested, observing mortality rates, hatchability, malformations, heartbeats, spontaneous movement, and GCQDs uptake. Dialysis studies indicated that gadolinium ions are incorporated into the internal structure of the carbon nanodots. Zebrafish toxicity tests revealed that while survival rates were comparable to control groups, hatchability decreased significantly with higher gadolinium concentrations in GCQDs. Fluorescence microscopy showed no statistical differences in the fluorescence intensity between groups. These findings suggest that GCQDs could serve as an effective dual-contrast agent, combining the optical imaging capabilities of CQDs with the enhanced MRI contrast provided by gadolinium. In this study, carbon-quantum-dot (CQD)-decorated TiO2 was prepared using an ultrasonic doping method and applied in the photocatalytic degradation of naphthalene under sunlight irradiation. The CQDs were synthesized from a typical macroalgae via diluted sulfuric acid pretreatment and hydrothermal synthesis using an optimal design, i.e., 3 wt% and 200 °C, respectively. The CQD/TiO2 composite remarkably enhanced the photocatalytic activity. The degradation of naphthalene under a visible light environment indicated that there is a synergistic mechanism between the CQDs and TiO2, in which the generation of reactive oxygen species is significantly triggered; in addition, the N that originated from the macroalgae accelerated the photocatalytic efficiency. Kinetic analysis showed that the photocatalytic behavior of the CQD/TiO2 composite followed a pseudo-first-order equation. Consequently, our combined experimental approach not only provides a facile pretreatment process for bio-CQDs synthesis, but also delivers a suitable TiO2 photocatalyst for the visible environment along with critical insights into the development of harmful macroalgae resources. Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. Fluorescent sensors with single reading are generally subject to unpredictable disturbs from environmental and artificial factors. In order to overcome this barrier of detection reliability, a paper-based optical sensor with proportional fluorescence was established and further combined with a smartphone for visual, on-site and quantitative detection of Fe3+, which affects the color, smell and taste of water, and endangers the health of plants and animals. The ratio fluorescent probe was fabricated by rhodamine B and carbon quantum dots derived from xylan. The red fluorescence of rhodamine B was inert to Fe3+, which was referred to as background. And blue emitting carbon quantum dots functioned as signal report units, which would be quenched by Fe3+ and make the fluorescence of the ratio probe change from purple to red. The quantitative detection of Fe3+ was conducted by investigating the RGB value of fluorescent images with a smartphone. With the increase of Fe3+ concentration, the R/B (red/blue) value of the fluorescent paper gradually increased. The linear detection range was 10–180 μM, and the limit of detection was 198.2 nM. Bacillus anthracis has gained international attention as a deadly bacterium and a potentially deadly biological warfare agent. Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is the main component of the protective layer of anthracis spores, and is also an anthrax biomarker. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore an efficient and sensitive DPA detection method. Herein, a novel ratio hybrid probe (CQDs-PIL-Eu3+) was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as an internal reference fluorescence and a covalent bond between CQDs and Eu3+ by using a polyionic liquid (PIL) as a bridge molecule. The ratiometric fluorescence probe was found to have the characteristics of sensitive fluorescence visual sensing in detecting DPA. The structure and the sensing properties of CQDs-PIL-Eu3+ were investigated in detail. In particular, the fluorescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ to CQDs (I616/I440) was linear with the concentration of DPA in the range of 0–50 μM, so the detection limit of the probe was as low as 32 nm, which was far lower than the DPA dose released by the number of anthrax spores in human body (60 μM) and, thus, can achieve sensitive detection. Therefore, the ratiometric fluorescence probe in this work has the characteristics of strong anti-interference, visual sensing, and high sensitivity, which provides a very promising scheme for the realization of anthrax biomarker DPA detection. Carbon quantum dots are the materials of a new era with astonishing properties such as high photoluminescence, chemical tuneability and high biocompatibility. Since their discovery, carbon quantum dots have been described as nanometric high-fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, but this definition has become weaker year after year. Nowadays, the classification and the physical explanation of carbon quantum dots optical properties and their chemical structure remain matter of debate. In this review, we provide a clear discussion on these points, providing a starting point for the rationalization of their classification and a comprehensive view on the optical and chemical features of carbon quantum dots. This study aims to evaluate the effect of berberine-based carbon quantum dots (Ber-CDs) on improving 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced intestinal mucositis in C57BL/6 mice, and explored the mechanisms behind this effect. Thirty-two C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups: normal control (NC), 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis model (5-FU), 5-FU + Ber-CDs intervention (Ber-CDs), and 5-FU + native berberine intervention (Con-CDs). The Ber-CDs improved body weight loss in 5-FU-induced mice with intestinal mucositis compared to the 5-FU group. The expressions of IL-1β and NLRP3 in spleen and serum in Ber-CDs and Con-Ber groups were significantly lower than those in the 5-FU group, and the decrease was more significant in the Ber-CDs group. The expressions of IgA and IL-10 in the Ber-CDs and Con-Ber groups were higher than those in the 5-FU group, but the up-regulation was more significant in the Ber-CDs group. Compared with the 5-FU group, the relative contents of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and the three main SCFAs in the colon contents were significantly increased the Ber-CDs and Con-Ber groups. Compared with the Con-Ber group, the concentrations of the three main short-chain fatty acids in the Ber-CDs group were significantly increased. The expressions of Occludin and ZO-1 in intestinal mucosa in the Ber-CDs and Con-Ber groups were higher than those in the 5-FU group, and the expressions of Occludin and ZO-1 in the Ber-CDs group were more higher than that in the Con-Ber group. In addition, compared with the 5-FU group, the damage of intestinal mucosa tissue in the Ber-CDs and Con-Ber groups were recovered. In conclusion, berberine can attenuate intestinal barrier injury and oxidative stress in mice to mitigate 5-fluorouracil-induced intestinal mucositis, moreover, the above effects of Ber-CDs were more significant than those of native berberine. Porphyrin (TMPyP) functionalized carbon quantum dots (CQDs-TMPyP), a novel and efficient carbon nanocomposite material, were developed as a novel luminescent material, which could be very useful for the sensitive detection of copper ions in the Cu2+ quenching luminescence of functionalized carbon quantum dots. Therefore, we constructed a sensitive "signal off" ECL biosensor for the detection of Cu2+. This sensor can sensitively respond to copper ions in the range of 10 nM to 10 μM, and the detection limit is 2.78 nM. At the same time, it has good selectivity and stability and a benign response in complex systems. CQD/PEDOT:PSS composites were prepared via the hydrothermal method from glucose carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and an aqueous solution of PEDOT:PSS conducting polymer and their electrical and optical properties were investigated. The morphology and structure of these samples were investigated by AFM, SEM, EDX, and EBSD. It was found that the CQDs and CQD/PEDOT:PSS composites had a globular structure with globule sizes of ~50–300 nm depending on the concentration of PEDOT:PSS in these composites. The temperature dependence of the resistivity was obtained for the CQD/PEDOT:PSS (3%, 5%, 50%) composites, which had a weak activation character. The charge transport mechanism was discussed. The dependence of the resistivity on the storage time of the CQD/PEDOT:PSS (3%, 5%, 50%) composites and pure PEDOT:PSS was obtained. It was noted that mixing CQDs with PEDOT:PSS allowed us to obtain better electrical and optical properties than pure CQDs. CQD/PEDOT:PSS (3%, 5%, 50%) composites are more conductive composites than pure CQDs, and the absorbance spectra of CQD/PEDOT:PSS composites are a synergistic effect of interaction between CQDs and PEDOT:PSS. We also note the better stability of the CQD/PEDOT:PSS (50%) composite than the pure PEDOT:PSS film. Conversion of hazardous compounds to value-added chemicals using clean energy possesses massive industrial interest. This applies especially to the hazardous compounds that are frequently released in daily life. In this work, a S-scheme photocatalyst is optimized by rational loading of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the synthetic process. As a bridge, the presence of CQDs between TiO2 and CdIn2S4 improves the electron extraction from TiO2 and supports the charge transport in S-scheme. Thanks to this, the TiO2/CQDs/CdIn2S4 presents outstanding photoactivity in converting the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released by cigarette to value-added benzaldehyde. The optimized photocatalyst performs 87.79% conversion rate and 72.76% selectivity in 1 h reaction under a simulated solar source, as confirmed by FT-IR and GC-MS. Surfactants are one of the major pollutants in laundry powder, which have an impact on the environment and human health. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are spherical zero-dimensional fluorescent nanoparticles with great potential for fluorescent probing, electrochemical biosensing and ion sensing. Herein, a bottom-up approach was developed for the synthesis of CQDs from biomass to detect laundry detergent and laundry powder. Waste chicken bones were used as carbon precursors after being dried, crushed and reacted with pure water at 180 °C for 4 h to generate CQDs, which exhibited a monodisperse quasi-spherical structure with an average particle size of 3.2 ± 0.2 nm. Functional groups, including -OH, C=O, C=C and C-O, were identified on the surface of the prepared CQDs. The optimal fluorescence excitation wavelength of the yellow-brown CQDs was 380 nm, with a corresponding emission peak at 465 nm. CQDs did not significantly increase cell death in multiple cell lines at concentrations of 200 µg·mL−1. Fluorescence enhancement of CQDs was observed after addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, a major anionic surfactant in laundry powder. A linear relationship between fluorescence enhancement CQDs and the concentration of laundry powder was established. Objective: A sensitive and selective fluorescence-detection platform based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was designed and developed for the determination of methotrexate (MTX), for the purpose of minimizing the possible toxic threat of MTX in clinics. Methods: The approach was prepared for the first time by a simple, hydrothermal method, making the synthesis and modification processes realized in one step using polyethyleneimine (PEI), and the proposed PEI-CQDs were obtained with high fluorescence quantum yield (38%). Results: MTX was found highly responsive and effective in quenching the fluorescence of the PEI-CQDs, due to a suggested fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism or inner-filter effect. The linear range of MTX was between 1 and 600 μmol/L under optimum conditions, with a detection limit (LOD) as low as 0.33 μmol/L. Furthermore, the fluorescent method was established for the MTX assay, and satisfactory results were acquired in real-sample determination. The average labeled quantity was 98.2%, and the average added standard recovery was 100.9%. This study designed a "turn-off–on" fluorescence analysis method based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to detect metal ions and amino acids in real sample systems. CQDs were derived from green pomelo peel via a one-step hydrothermal process. The co-doped CQDs with N and S atoms imparted excellent optical properties (quantum yield = 17.31%). The prepared CQDs could be used as fluorescent "turn-off" probes to detect Fe3+ with a limit of detection of 0.086 µM, a linear detection range of 0.1–160 µM, and recovery of 83.47–106.53% in water samples. The quenched CQD fluorescence could be turned on after adding L-cysteine (L-Cys), which allowed detection of L-Cys with a detection limit of 0.34 µM and linear range of 0.4–85 µM. Recovery of L-Cys in amino acid beverage was 87.08–122.74%. Visual paper-based testing strips and cellulose/CQDs composite hydrogels could be also used to detect Fe3+ and L-Cys. The simultaneous identification of multiple metal ions in water has attracted enormous research interest in the past few decades. We herein describe a novel method for multiple metal ion detection using a carbon quantum dots (CQDs)-based chemosensor array and the CQDs are functionalized with different amino acids (glutamine, histidine, arginine, lysine and proline), which act as sensing elements in the sensor array. Eleven metal ions are successfully identified by the designed chemosensor array, with 100% classification accuracy. Importantly, the proposed method allowed the quantitative prediction of the concentration of individual metal ions in the mixture with the aid of a support vector machine (SVM). The sensor array also enables the qualitative detection of unknown metal ions under the interference of tap water and local river water. Here, based on self-assembly of carbon quantum dots (CDs), an innovative method to prepare nanomaterials under the action of a metal catalyst was presented. CDs were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with citric acid (CA) as the carbon source, ethylenediamine (EDA) as the passivator and FeSO4•7H2O as the pre-catalyst. In the experiment, it was found that the nano-carbon films with a graphene-like structure were formed on the surface of the solution. The structure of the films was studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), etc. The results demonstrated that the films were formed by the self-assembly of CDs under the action of the gas–liquid interface template and the metal catalyst. Meanwhile, the electrochemical performance of the films was evaluated by linear cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge discharge (GOD) tests. In addition, the bulk solution could be further reacted and self-assembled by reflux to form a bifunctional magnetic–fluorescent composite material. Characterizations such as X-ray diffractometer (XRD), fluorescence spectra (FL), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), etc. revealed that it was a composite of superparamagnetic γ-Fe2O3 and CDs. The results showed that self-assembly of CDs is a novel and effective method for preparing new carbon nanomaterials.

A detection system consisting of C/N-dots and Ag+ complex was established. In this system, C/N-dots possessed the photoluminescent property and the Ag+ complex owned the RLS property, so, by combining the two luminescent properties to achieve complementary advantages, we could detect biothiols and solve the problem of distinguishing between Cys and GSH. Additionally, we optimized detecting conditions and investigated the detection mechanism of fluorescence quenching and RLS detecting. Results showed that the analytical response of fluorescence was linear in the range 0−140 μM and the detection limit (LOD) was calculated to be 6.6 μM for Cys, and the addition of GSH had no effect on fluorescence. RLS response ranges were 0−167 μM for Cys and 0−200 μM for GSH, with LOD down to 64 nM and 74 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the probe was successfully used for detecting Cys in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples by fluorescence method, and also, by RLS technique, the content of GSH in FBS samples was detected.

'Nanozymes', a term coined by Scrimin, Pasquato, and co-workers to describe nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics, represent an exciting and emerging research area in the field of artificial enzymes. Indubitably, the last decade has witnessed substantial advancements in the design of a variety of functional nanoscale materials, including metal oxides and carbon-based nanomaterials, which mimic the structures and functions of naturally occurring enzymes. Among these, carbon nanodots (C-dots) or carbon quantum dots (CQDs) offer huge potential due to their unique properties as compared to natural enzymes and/or classical artificial enzymes. In this mini review, we discuss the peroxidase-like catalytic activities of C-dots and their applications in biosensing. The scope intends to cover not only the C-dots but also graphene quantum dots (GQDs), doped C-dots/GQDs, carbon nitride dots, and C-dots/GQDs nanocomposites.
