G-quadruplexes (G4s) are non-canonical secondary structures that play a crucial role in the regulation of genetic expression. This study explores the interaction between G4s and a small family of oligostyrylbenzene (OSB) derivatives, characterized by tris(styryl)benzene and tetrastyrylbenzene backbones, functionalized with either trimethylammonium or 1-methylpyridinium groups. Initially identified as DNA ligands, these OSB derivatives have now been recognized as potent G4 binders, surpassing in binding affinity commercially available ligands such as pyridostatin and displaying good selectivity for G4s over duplex DNA. Furthermore, OSB derivatives 1 and 2 demonstrated significant antiparasitic activity against bloodstream forms of T. brucei and extracellular L. major, with high selectivity indices when compared to MRC-5 healthy control cells. Derivatives 1 and 2 exhibited moderate biocidal effects against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Notably, a synergistic antibacterial effect was observed when these compounds were combined with traditional antibiotics, particularly against Acinetobacter baumannii, highlighting their potential utility in addressing drug-resistant bacterial infections. The differences in bioactivity among the OSB derivatives can be attributed to variations in cellular uptake, as proved by flow cytometry analysis. We report a step-economic strategy for the direct synthesis of novel polycyclic N-heterocycle-fused naphthoquinones by merging intramolecular oxidative coupling and cascade [4 + 2] cycloaddition. In the protocol, mechanistic investigations suggest that the cascade reaction involves the intermediate spiro polycyclic N-heterocycles and [4 + 2] cycloaddition processes. This protocol is featured with moderate to excellent yields, wide substrate scope, and divergent structures of products. In addition, the photophysical properties of the synthesized products were evaluated. A series of iridium(III) triimine complexes incorporating 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) and 2,6-bis(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine (dtpy) derivatives were successfully designed and synthesized to investigate the impact of the peripheral rings (pyridine, thiazole) and substituents (thiophene, bithiophene, EDOT) attached to the triimine skeleton on their photophysical properties. The Ir(III) complexes were fully characterized using IR, 1H, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray analysis. Their thermal properties were evaluated using TGA measurements. Photoluminescence spectra of [IrCl3L1–6] were investigated in solution at 298 and 77 K. The experimental studies were accompanied by DFT/TDDFT calculations. Methyl 4-(1,3a,6a-triazapentalen-3-yl)benzoate (TAP1) shows interesting properties as a small molecule fluorophore. In the search for post-functionalization methods, palladium-catalyzed arylation reactions were demonstrated. Direct CH arylation reactions of TAP1 with various aryl halides resulted in 3,6-diaryltriazapentalenes TAP4, although mostly in poor yields. Bromination of TAP1 followed by Suzuki coupling, on the other hand, requires a more delicate procedure, but gave arylated products with the same regiochemistry (TAP4) in moderate to good yields. The structure of 6-phenyltriazapentalene TAP4a was confirmed by crystallographic analysis. In addition, the effect of the C6 arylation on the fluorescent properties of 3-aryl-1,3a,6a-triazapentalenes was studied in dichloromethane at room temperature and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at 77 K, while the photophysical properties of two saponified derivatives were measured in acetonitrile. A series of luminescent bis-cyclometalated iridium complexes with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (tpy), [Ir(C^N)2(tpy)]PF6 (C^N = 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) for 1; benzo[h]quinolinate (bzq) for 2; 1-phenylisoquinolinate (piq) for 3; and 2-phenylbenzothiazolate (pbt) for 4), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the tpy ligands of 1–4 are coordinated to the iridium center in a bidentate fashion, and the uncoordinated pendant pyridine rings in the tpy ligands of 1–4 form intramolecular π-π stacking interactions with a phenyl moiety of C^N ligands. In addition, the pendant pyridine ring in the tpy ligand of 1 forms an intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction, unlike in 2–4. Of interest, the photophysical properties of 1–4 are strongly influenced by the C^N ligands; 1 shows a luminescence band at 572 nm, with a short lifetime (τ) value of 80 nsec and a lower absolute luminescence quantum yield (Φ) of 3.72%, whereas 3 exhibits an intense luminescence band at 588 nm with a long τ value of 1965 nsec and a moderate Φ value of 9.57%. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the luminescence originates from the triplet metal–ligand to ligand charge transfer (3MLL′CT) excited state.

Compound 3 demonstrates exceptional cytotoxicity, surpassing the potency of Doxorubicin. The fluorescence spectra of the synthesized 1–6 in different solvents reveal solvent-dependent shifts in the emission maximum values, highlighting the influence of the solvent environment on their fluorescence properties. A quantum chemical TD-DFT analysis provides insights into the electronic structure and fluorescence behavior of 1–6, elucidating HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, electronegativity values, and dipole moments, contributing to a deeper understanding of their electronic properties and potential reactivity. The strategic functionalisation of pyrene at non-K region and nodal positions is crucial for expanding its utility, allowing for diverse functionalisation strategies. Bromo-substituted precursors serve as vital intermediates in synthetic routes; however, the substitution pattern of bromoderivatives significantly impacts their subsequent functionalisation and properties, posing challenges in synthesis and purification. Understanding the distinct electronic structure of pyrene is pivotal, dictating the preferential electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions at specific positions. Despite the wealth of literature, contradictions and complexities persist in synthesising suitably substituted bromopyrenes due to the unpredictable nature of substitution reactions. Building upon historical precedents, this study provides a comprehensive overview of bromine introduction in pyrene derivatives, offering optimised synthesis conditions based on laboratory research. Specifically, the synthesis of mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrabromopyrene isomers at non-K positions (1-, 3-, 6-, 8-) and nodal positions (2-, 7-) is systematically explored. [(Z)-2′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se (5, L1) and [(Z)-4′-{2-C6H5-(4H)-oxazol-5-one}CHC6H4]2Se (6, L2) were prepared, structurally characterized and used as ligands to obtain new metal complexes of types [MX(Ln)] [L1: M = Ag, X = OTf (7); M = Au, X = Cl (13); L2: M = Ag, X = OTf (8); M = Au, X = Cl (14)], [(MX)2(Ln)] [M = Ag, X = OTf, L1 (9); L2 (10)], [ZnCl2(Ln)] [L1 (15); L2 (16)] and [Ag(Ln)][PF6] [L1 (11); L2 (12)]. The silver complexes 7 and 8 were ionic species (1:1 electrolytes) in a MeCN solution, while in the solid state, the triflate fragments were bonded to the silver cations. Similarly, the 2:1 complexes 9 and 10 were found to behave as 1:2 electrolytes in a MeCN solution, but single-crystal X-ray diffraction demonstrated that compound 9 showed the formation of a dimer in the solid state: a tetranuclear [Ag(OTf)]4 built through bridging triflate ligands was coordinated by two bridging organoselenium ligands through the nitrogen from the oxazolone ring and the selenium atoms in a 1κN:2κSe fashion. Supramolecular architectures supported by intermolecular C−H∙∙∙π, C−H∙∙∙O, Cl∙∙∙H and F∙∙∙H interactions were observed in compounds 4, 5 and 9. The compounds exhibited similar photophysical properties, with a bathochromic shift in the UV-Vis spectra caused by the position of the oxazolone ring on the phenyl ring attached to the selenium atoms. The comparison of experimental and theoretical vibrational spectra can help understand basic vibration patterns and provides a better interpretation of IR spectra. The UV–Vis spectrum of HMD was computed using density functional theory (DFT)/B3LYP/6-311 G(d,p) basis set in the gas state, and the maximum wavelength was in accord with the experimental data. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and Hirshfeld surface analysis confirmed O(1)–H(1A)···O(2) intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the HMD molecule. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis provided delocalizing interactions between π→π* orbitals and n→σ*/π* charge transfer transitions. The present work describes the preparation and characterization of a new cobalt(III) porphyrin coordination compound named (chlorido)(nicotinoylchloride)[meso-tetra(para-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt(III) dichloromethane monosolvate with the formula [CoIII(TClPP)Cl(NTC)]·CH2Cl2 (4). The single-crystal X-ray molecular structure of 4 shows very important ruffling and waving distortions of the porphyrin macrocycle. The Soret and Q absorption bands of 4 are very red-shifted as a consequence of the very distorted porphyrin core. This coordination compound was also studied by fluorescence and cyclic voltammetry. The efficiency of our four porphyrinic compounds—the H2TClPP (1) free-base porphyrin, the [CoII(TClPP)] (2) and [CoIII(TClPP)Cl] (3) starting materials, and the new Co(III) metalloporphyrin [CoIII(TClPP)Cl(NTC)]·CH2Cl2 (4)—as catalysts in the photochemical degradation was tested on malachite green (MG) dye. Quantum-chemical calculations on the spectral properties of some aryl substituted 3-phosphonocoumarins were performed, and the effect of the substituents in the aryl moiety was evaluated. The structures possessing promising fluorescent properties were successfully synthesized via Suzuki and Sonogashira cross-coupling. The synthetic protocol was also applied for the phosphorous chemoisomer of 3-phosphonocoumarin, 1,2-benzoxaphosphorin, and their carboxylate analogues. The optical properties of the arylated and alkynylated products were experimentally determined. The obtained quantum-chemical and experimental results give the possibility for a fine tuning of the optical properties of phosphorous-containing coumarin systems by altering the substituent at its C-6 position. The use of alkynyl gold(I) complexes covers different research fields, such as bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis, and material science, considering the luminescent properties of the complexes. Regarding this last application, we report here the synthesis of three novel dinuclear gold(I) complexes of the general formula [(diNHC)(Au-C≡CPh)2]: two Au-C≡CPh units are connected by a bridging di(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligand, which should favor the establishment of semi-supported aurophilic interactions. The complexes can be easily synthesized through mechanochemistry upon reacting the pristine dibromido complexes [(diNHC)(AuBr)2] with phenylacetylene and KOH. Interestingly, we were also able to isolate the monosubstituted complex [(diNHC)(Au-C≡CPh)(AuBr)]. The gold(I) species were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Interestingly, we were also able to isolate the monosubstituted complex [(diNHC)(Au-C≡CPh)(AuBr)]. The gold(I) species were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The emission properties were also evaluated, and the salient data are comparable to those of analogous compounds reported in the literature.

The tuning of photophysical properties of the poly[2-methoxy-5-(3,7-dimethyl-octyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]—end capped with dimethylphenyl (DMP), MDMO-PPV–DMP, was achieved by incorporation of ZnO NPs with various contents. Hybrid nanocomposites of MDMO-PPV–DMP with ZnO NPs were prepared by solution blending method and then deposited onto glass substrates. The structural properties of the hybrid nanocomposites samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and FE-SEM, while their optical properties were extracted from the absorption and photoluminescence spectra. The energy band gap, energy tail, steepness parameter, and CIE chromatic coordinates were tuned by increase the content of ZnO NPs into the polymer matrix. The ZnO NPs incorporation assists the emission wavelength shift and multicolor emitting from the hybrid nanocomposites.

Functional organic dyes play a key role in many fields, namely in biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Herein, we report two novel 2,3- and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl substituted rosamines (3 and 4, respectively) that were successfully synthesized through a microwave-assisted protocol. The best reaction yields were obtained for rosamine 4, which also showed the most interesting photophysical properties, specially toward biogenic amines (BAs). Several amines including n- and t-butylamine, cadaverine, and putrescine cause spectral changes of 4, in UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra, which are indicative of their potential application as an effective tool to detect amines in acetonitrile solutions. In the gas phase, the probe response is more expressive for spermine and putrescine. Additionally, we found that methanolic solutions of rosamine 4 and n-butylamine undergo a pink to yellow color change over time, which has been attributed to the formation of a new compound. The latter was isolated and identified as 5 (9−aminopyronin), whose solutions exhibit a remarkable increase in fluorescence intensity together with a shift toward more energetic wavelengths. Other 9-aminopyronins 6a, 6b, 7a, and 7b were obtained from methanolic solutions of 4 with putrescine and cadaverine, demonstrating the potential of this new xanthene entity to react with primary amines.

Inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites, as alternative light absorbers for organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells, have attracted more and more attention due to their superb thermal stability for photovoltaic applications. However, the humid air instability of CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) hinders their further development. The optoelectronic properties of CsPbI2Br films are closely related to the quality of films, so preparing high-quality perovskite films is crucial for fabricating high-performance PSCs. For the first time, we demonstrate that the regulation of ambient temperature of the dry air in the glovebox is able to control the growth of CsPbI2Br crystals and further optimize the morphology of CsPbI2Br film. Through controlling the ambient air temperature assisted crystallization, high-quality CsPbI2Br films are obtained, with advantages such as larger crystalline grains, negligible crystal boundaries, absence of pinholes, lower defect density, and faster carrier mobility. Accordingly, the PSCs based on as-prepared CsPbI2Br film achieve a power conversion efficiency of 15.5% (the maximum stabilized power output of 15.02%). Moreover, the optimized CsPbI2Br films show excellent robustness against moisture and oxygen and maintain the photovoltaic dark phase after 3 h aging in an air atmosphere at room temperature and 35% relative humidity (R.H.). In comparison, the pristine films are completely converted to the yellow phase in 1.5 h.

In this work we report solvatochromic and luminescent properties of ethyl N-salicylideneglycinate (1), ethyl N-(5-methoxysalicylidene)glycinate (2), ethyl N-(5-bromosalicylidene)glycinate (3), and ethyl N-(5-nitrosalicylidene)glycinate (4) dyes. 1–4 correspond to a class of N-salicylidene aniline derivatives, whose photophysical properties are dictated by the intramolecular proton transfer between the OH-function and the imine N-atom, affording tautomerization between the enol-imine and keto-enamine forms. Photophysical properties of 1–4 were studied in different pure non-polar and (a)protic polar solvents as well as upon gradual addition of NEt3, NaOH, and CH3SO3H. The DFT calculations were performed to verify the structures of 1–4 as well as their electronic and optical properties.

Synthesis, structural characterization and photophysical properties for a series of new trans-A2B2- and A3B-type ethynyl functionalized meso-phenothiazinyl-phenyl porphyrin derivatives are described. The new compounds displayed the characteristic porphyrin absorption spectra slightly modified by weak auxochromic effects of the substituents and fluorescence emission in the range of 651–659 nm with 11–25% quantum yields. The changes recorded in the UV-vis absorption spectra in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) are consistent with the protonation of the two internal nitrogen atoms of the free-base porphyrin (19 nm bathochromic shift of the strong Soret band and one long wave absorption maxima situated in the range of 665–695 nm). Protonation of the phenothiazine substituents required increased amounts of TFA and produced a distinct hypsochromic shift of the long wave absorption maxima. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of a porphyrin dication pointed out a saddle-distorted porphyrin ring as the ground-state geometry.

Two near-infrared (NIR) absorbing di(thien-2-nyl)-di(dimethylanilino)azaBODIPY dyes 2a and 2b were synthesized and characterized that differ depending on whether the dimethylaniline substituents are introduced at the 3,5- or 1,7-positions of the azaBODIPY core. The main spectral bands lie at 824 and 790 nm, respectively, in CH2Cl2. The effect of substituent position on the photophysical and pH sensing properties was analyzed through a comparison of the optical properties with the results of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Protonation of the dimethylamino nitrogen atoms eliminates the intramolecular charge transfer properties of these compounds, and this results in a marked blue-shift of the main absorption bands to 696 and 730 nm, respectively, in CH2Cl2, and a fluorescence “turn-on” effect in the NIR region. The pH dependence studies reveal that the pKa values of the non-protonated 2a and 2b molecules are ca. 6.9 (±0.05) and 7.3 (±0.05), respectively, while that of the monoprotonated species for both dyes is ca. 1.4 (±0.05) making them potentially suitable for use as colorimetric pH indicators under highly acidic conditions.

A series of D−π−A diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP)-based small molecules were designed for organic light-emitting diode(OLEDs) and organic solar cell(OSCs) applications. Applying the PBE0/6-31G(d,p) method, the ground state geometry and relevant electronic properties were investigated. The first excited singlet state geometry and the absorption and fluorescent spectra were simulated at the TD-PBE0/6-31G(d,p) level. The calculated results revealed that the photophysical properties were affected through the introduction of different end groups. Furthermore, the electronic transitions corresponding to absorption and emission exhibited an intramolecular charge transfer feature. Our results suggest that the designed molecules acted not only as luminescent for OLEDs, but also as donor materials in OSCs. Moreover, they can also be used as potential electron transfer materials for OLEDs and OSCs.

In recent years, flexible perovskite solar cells have drawn tremendous attention in the field of wearable devices, and optimization of perovskite composition plays an important role in improving film quality and photophysical properties. At present, some researchers have only studied A-site organic cations mixing or X-site halide anions mixing in the ABX3 structure of perovskite, but there are few reports on co-mixing of A-site and X-site ions in flexible perovskite solar cells. In this paper, we mainly try to study the effects of different concentrations of mixed formamidine methylamine halide (FAxMA1-xBrxClyI1-x-y) precursor solutions on the quality and photophysical properties of perovskite films under low temperature process. We conclude that the film quality and photophysical properties reached the best results when the optimized precursor solution concentration was 60:6:6. The investigation on composition optimization in this experiment laid the foundation for the improvement of the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells. We also use the results of this experiment to prepare flexible perovskite solar cells based on carbon electrodes, which are expected to be applied in other flexible optoelectronic or electro-optical devices.

In contrast to the chloro-bromo substituted quinazolines in which selectivity has been previously found to generally favor substitution at the more activated C(4)-Cl bond over the weaker Csp2-Br bond, substitution in the case of the chloro-iodo derivatives favors cross-coupling through the intrinsically more reactive Csp2-I bond. The electronic absorption and emission properties of the prepared 2,3-diaryl-6-(phenylethynyl)quinazolines were studied in solvents of different polarity (dichloromethane, toluene, DMF, methanol) and CH2Cl2-TFA mixture using UV-Vis and emission spectroscopic techniques complemented with density functional theory method to establish the effect of substituents on intramolecular charge transfer properties.

Coordination compounds have many interesting properties which find diverse applications in numerous aspects of human life. Fourteeen contributions were received for this Special Issue covering very different aspects of metal complexes and their practical applications. The highest number of manuscripts deals with the biological activity of complexes which might potentially be used in the clinical practice. Authors have tested their cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity and enzyme inhibition. Their optical properties were studied in view of their potential use in photodynamic therapy. Moreover, optical properties could also be used for bioanalysis. It is also known that metal complexes are useful catalysts and a few such examples are also described herein. Many other interesting properties and facts about the isolated and described complexes are also reported (radioactivity, design of metal-organic frameworks, etc.).

Natural and synthetic macrocycles like porphyrins, corroles and phthalocyanines are considered strong candidates to be used in different fields, such as catalysis, sensing, medicine, materials science, or in the development of advanced biomimetic models. All these applications are strongly dependent on the availability of compounds with adequate and specific structural features. This Special Issue has collected 13 contributions which consolidate and expand our knowledge on the application of these macrocycles in different fields accompanied by innovative synthetic methodologies to afford and to functionalize this type of compounds.

A number of novel ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes have been designedand synthesized for use as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) due totheir rich photophysical properties such as intense absorption, long-lived lifetimes, highemission quantum yields and unique redox characteristics. Many of these complexesexhibit photophysical behavior that can be readily controlled through a careful choice ofligands and/or substituents. With this perspective, we review the design and general syntheticmethods of some polypyridine ligands based on bipyridine, phenanthroline, terpyridine andquaterpyridine with/without anchoring groups with a view to correlate functionality ofligand structures with the observed photophysical, electroredox and power conversionefficiency of some examples of Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes that have been reported andparticularly used in the DSSCs applications. The main interest, however, is focused onshowing the development of new polypyridine ligand materials containing long-rangeelectron transfer motifs such as the alkenyl, alkynyl and polyaromatic donor functionalities.

Iodine-catalyzed condensation of 2-amino-3,5-dibromobenzamide with cyclohexane-1,3-dione derivatives in refluxing toluene afforded the corresponding bisquinazolinones. Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of the latter with arylboronic acids afforded tetraarylbisquinazolinones. The electronic absorption and emission properties of these tetraarylbisquinazolinones were measured in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and acetic acid by means of UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with quantum chemical methods to understand the influence of substituents on intramolecular charge transfer (ICT).

Further transformation of the 2-aryl-6,8-dibromo-4-(phenylethynyl)quinazolines via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with arylboronic acids occurred without selectivity to afford the corresponding 2,6,8-triaryl-4-(phenylethynyl)quinazolines. The absorption and emission properties of these polysubstituted quinazolines were also determined.
