A biography of U.S. cowpuncher Edward C. Abbott is presented. Born in England, Abbott migrated to the U.S. with his family in 1971. He drove Texas cattle to in Dakota Territory and Nebraska for a number of outfits including the FUF outfit in Texas in 1883. He married a woman named Mary Stuart and had eight children with her. He wrote a memoir titled "We Pointed Them North: Recollections of a Cowpuncher."

The article focuses on polo playing in Big Horn, Montana area at the end of the nineteenth century and during the early twentieth century. British expatriates and younger sons of British aristocrats O. H. (Oliver Henry) Wallop and brothers Malcolm and William Moncreiffe settled in Big Horn in the 1890s to raise horses and cattle, eventually adding polo ponies to their interests. Their interest in polo was passed onto neighboring American cowboys and ranchers, resulting in weekly Sunday polo games which garnered international attention for their level of play. The history and origins of polo are also discussed.

The article explores the activities of 19th century stockmen's associations in Montana. The problems posed by raising livestock on open land are explored with particular focus given to the prevalence of horse and cattle thieves. Early legislation developed and promoted by the organizations is discussed and include plans to divide counties into stock districts, elect stock inspectors, and brand stray cattle found within the districts. The rise of the Territorial Stock Association, cooperation among ranchers in identifying brands in stolen stock, and conflict among association members regarding the use of vigilantism or restraint in confronting cattle rustlers are also discussed.
