We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. Approximate N -body methods, such as fastpm and cola , have been successful in modelling halo and galaxy clustering statistics, but their low resolution on small scales is a limitation for applications that require high precision. Full N -body simulations can provide better accuracy but are too computationally expensive for a quick exploration of cosmological parameters. This paper presents a method for correcting distinct haloes identified in fast N -body simulations, so that various halo statistics improve to a percent level accuracy. The scheme seeks to find empirical corrections to halo properties such that the virial mass is the same as that of a corresponding halo in a full N -body simulation. The modified outer density contour of the corrected halo is determined on the basis of the fastpm settings and the number of particles inside the halo. This method only changes some parameters of the halo finder, and does not require any extra CPU-cost. We demonstrate that the adjusted halo catalogues of fastpm simulations significantly improve the precision of halo mass-based statistics from redshifts |$z=0.0$| to 1.0, and that our calibration can be applied to different cosmologies without needing to be recalibrated. In this paper, we discuss measurements of the stellar population and star-forming properties for 43 spectroscopically confirmed publicly available high-redshift z > 7 JWST galaxies in the JADES and CEERS observational programs. We carry out a thorough study investigating the relationship between spectroscopic features and photometrically derived ones, including from spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of models, as well as morphological and structural properties. We find that the star formation rates (SFRs) measured from H β line emission are higher than those estimated from Bayesian SED fitting and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity, with ratios SFRH β/SFRUV ranging from ∼2 to 13. This is a sign that the star formation history is consistently rising given the time-scales of H β versus UV star formation probes. In addition, we investigate how well equivalent widths (EWs) of H β λ4861, [O  iii ] λ4959, and [O  iii ] λ5007 can be measured from photometry, finding that, on average, the EW derived from photometric excesses in filters is 30 per cent smaller than the direct spectroscopic measurement. We also discover that a stack of the line emitting galaxies shows a distinct morphology after subtracting imaging that contains only the continuum. This gives us a first view of the line or ionized gas emission from z > 7 galaxies, demonstrating that this material has a similar distribution, statistically, as the continuum. We also compare the derived SFRs and stellar masses for both parametric and non-parametric star formation histories, where we find that 35 per cent of our sample formed at least 30 per cent of their stellar mass in recent (<10 Myr) starburst events. In this paper, we set out to construct a set of reference mock galaxy redshift surveys (MGRSs) for the future Chinese Space-station Survey Telescope (CSST) observation, where subsequent survey selection effects can be added and evaluated. This set of MGRSs is generated using the dark matter subhaloes extracted from a high-resolution Jiutian N -body simulation of the standard lambda-cold dark matter cosmogony with Ω m  = 0.3111, ΩΛ = 0.6889, and σ8 = 0.8102. The simulation has a box size of 1  h −1Gpc, and consists of 61443 particles with mass resolution |$3.723 \times 10^{8} \:h^{-1}\rm M_\odot$|⁠. In order to take into account the effect of redshift evolution, we first use all 128 snapshots in the Jiutian simulation to generate a light-cone halo/subhalo catalogue. Next, galaxy luminosities are assigned to the main and subhalo populations using the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) method with the DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) z -band luminosity functions at different redshifts. Multiband photometries, as well as images, are then assigned to each mock galaxy using a 3D parameter space nearest-neighbour sampling of the DESI LS (Legacy Imaging Survey) observational galaxies and groups. Finally, the CSST and DESI LS survey geometry and magnitude limit cuts are applied to generate the required MGRSs. As we have checked, this set of MGRSs can generally reproduce the observed galaxy luminosity/mass functions within 0.1 dex for galaxies with L > 108   h -2 L⊙ (or M * > 108.5  h -2M⊙) and within 1σ level for galaxies with L < 108   h -2 L⊙ (or M * < 108.5  h -2 M⊙). Together with the CSST slitless spectra and redshifts for our DESI LS seed galaxies that are under construction, we will set out to test various slitless observational selection effects in subsequent probes. The cosmic acceleration problem remains one of the most significant challenges in cosmology. One of the proposed solutions to this problem is the modification of gravity on large scales. In this paper, we explore the well-known μ–Σ parametrization scenarios and confront them with observational data, including the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), and South Pole Telescope (SPT), as well as large-scale structure data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; baryon acoustic oscillation + redshift-space distortion) and Pantheon supernova (SN) catalogue. We employ a Bayesian framework to constrain the model parameters and discuss the implications of our results on the viability of modified gravity theories. Our analysis reveals the strengths and limitations of the μ–Σ parametrization and provides valuable insights into the nature of gravity on cosmological scales. From the joint analysis of the ACT + WMAP + SDSS + SN, we find μ0 − 1 = 0.02 ± 0.19 and Σ0 − 1 = 0.021 ± 0.068 at 68 per cent confidence level (CL). In light of the SPT + WMAP + SDSS + SN, we find μ0 − 1 = 0.07 ± 0.18 and |$\Sigma _0 -1 = -0.009^{+0.078}_{-0.11}$| at 68 per cent CL. In all the analyses carried out, we do not find any deviations from the theory of general relativity. Our results represent an observational update on the well-known μ–Σ parametrization in view of current CMB data, independent of and competitive with the constraints obtained with the Planck data. Constraints on the potential properties of superconducting cosmic strings provide an indirect probe of physics beyond the standard model at energies inaccessible to terrestrial particle colliders. In this study, we perform the first joint Bayesian analysis to extract constraints on superconducting cosmic strings from current 21-cm signal measurements while accounting rigorously for the uncertainties in foregrounds and high redshift astrophysics. We include the latest publicly available 21-cm power spectrum upper limits from HERA, 21-cm global signal data from SARAS 3, and the synergistic probe of the unresolved X-ray background in our final analysis. This paper thus constitutes the first attempt to use 21-cm power spectrum data to probe cosmic strings. In contrast to previous works, we find no strong constraints can be placed on superconducting cosmic strings from current 21-cm measurements. This is because of uncertainties in the X-ray emission efficiency of the first galaxies, with X-ray emissivities greater than 3 × 1040 erg s−1 M |$_{\odot }^{-1}$|  yr able to mask the presence of cosmic strings in the 21-cm signal. We conclude by discussing the prospects for future constraints from definitive 21-cm signal measurements and argue that the recently proposed soft photon heating should be cause for optimism due to its potential to break degeneracies that would have otherwise made the signatures of cosmic strings difficult to distinguish from those of astrophysical origin. Recently, hybrid bias expansions have emerged as a powerful approach to modelling the way in which galaxies are distributed in the Universe. Similarly, field-level emulators have recently become possible, thanks to advances in machine learning and N -body simulations. In this paper, we explore whether both techniques can be combined to provide a field-level model for the clustering of galaxies in real and redshift space. Specifically, here we will demonstrate that field-level emulators are able to accurately predict all the operators of a second-order hybrid bias expansion. The precision achieved in real and redshift space is similar to that obtained for the non-linear matter power spectrum. This translates to roughly 1–2 per cent precision for the power spectrum of a BOSS (Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey) and a Euclid-like galaxy sample up to |$k\sim 0.6\ h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠. Remarkably, this combined approach also delivers precise predictions for field-level galaxy statistics. Despite all these promising results, we detect several areas where further improvements are required. Recent attempts at measuring the variation of c using an assortment of standard candles and the redshift-dependent Hubble expansion rate inferred from the currently available catalogue of cosmic chronometers have tended to show that the speed of light appears to be constant, at least up to z ∼ 2. A notable exception is the use of high-redshift ultraviolet + X-ray quasars, whose Hubble diagram seems to indicate an ∼2.7σ deviation of c from its value c 0 (≡ 2.99792458 × 1010 cm s−1) on Earth. We show in this paper, however, that this anomaly is due to an error in the derived relation between the luminosity distance, D L, and H (z) when c is allowed to vary with redshift, and an imprecise calibration of the quasar catalogue. When these deficiencies are addressed correctly, one finds that c / c 0 = 0.95 ± 0.14 in the redshift range 0 ≲ z ≲ 2, fully consistent with zero variation within the measurement errors. Cosmic Dawn (CD) and Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are epochs of the Universe which host invaluable information about the cosmology and astrophysics of X-ray heating and hydrogen reionization. Radio interferometric observations of the 21-cm line at high redshifts have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the Universe during this time. However, modelling the evolution of these epochs is particularly challenging due to the complex interplay of many physical processes. This makes it difficult to perform the conventional statistical analysis using the likelihood-based Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (mcmc) methods, which scales poorly with the dimensionality of the parameter space. In this paper, we show how the Simulation-Based Inference through Marginal Neural Ratio Estimation (mnre) provides a step towards evading these issues. We use 21cmFAST to model the 21-cm power spectrum during CD–EoR with a six-dimensional parameter space. With the expected thermal noise from the Square Kilometre Array, we are able to accurately recover the posterior distribution for the parameters of our model at a significantly lower computational cost than the conventional likelihood-based methods. We further show how the same training data set can be utilized to investigate the sensitivity of the model parameters over different redshifts. Our results support that such efficient and scalable inference techniques enable us to significantly extend the modelling complexity beyond what is currently achievable with conventional mcmc methods. Weak galaxy lensing surveys have consistently reported low values of the S 8 parameter compared to the Planck lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. Amon & Efstathiou used KiDS-1000 cosmic shear measurements to propose that this tension can be reconciled if the matter fluctuation spectrum is suppressed more strongly on non-linear scales than assumed in state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations. In this paper, we investigate cosmic shear data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3. The non-linear suppression of the matter power spectrum required to resolve the S 8 tension between DES and the Planck ΛCDM model is not as strong as inferred using KiDS data, but is still more extreme than predictions from recent numerical simulations. An alternative possibility is that non-standard dark matter contributes to the required suppression. We investigate the redshift and scale dependence of the suppression of the matter power spectrum. If our proposed explanation of the S 8 tension is correct, the required suppression must extend into the mildly non-linear regime to wavenumbers |$k\sim 0.2 \, h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠. This paper presents new optical and near-UV spectra of 11 extremely powerful jetted quasars, with radio to optical flux density ratio >103, which concomitantly cover the low-ionization emission of Mg  ii λ2800 and h β as well as the Fe  ii blends in the redshift range 0.35 ≲ z ≲ 1. We aim to quantify broad emission line differences between radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) quasars by using the 4D eigenvector 1 parameter space and its main sequence (MS) and to check the effect of powerful radio ejection on the low-ionization broad emission lines. The h β and Mg  ii λ2800 emission lines were measured by using non-linear multicomponent fittings as well as by analysing their full profile. We found that broad emission lines show large redward asymmetry both in h β and Mg  ii λ2800. The location of our RL sources in a UV plane looks similar to the optical one, with weak Fe  ii UV emission and broad Mg  ii λ2800. We supplement the 11 sources with large samples from previous work to gain some general inferences. We found that, compared to RQ, our extreme RL quasars show larger median h β full width at half maximum (FWHM), weaker Fe  ii emission, larger M BH, lower L bol/ L Edd, and a restricted bf space occupation in the optical and UV MS planes. The differences are more elusive when the comparison is carried out by restricting the RQ population to the region of the MS occupied by RL sources, albeit an unbiased comparison matching M BH and L bol/ L Edd suggests that the most powerful RL quasars show the highest redward asymmetries in h β. The stochastic order redshift technique (sort) is a simple, efficient, and robust method to improve cosmological redshift measurements. The method relies upon having a small (∼10 per cent) reference sample of high-quality redshifts. Within pencil-beam-like sub-volumes surrounding each galaxy, we use the precise d N /d z distribution of the reference sample to recover new redshifts and assign them one-to-one to galaxies such that the original rank order of redshifts is preserved. Preserving the rank order is motivated by the fact that random variables drawn from Gaussian probability density functions with different means but equal standard deviations satisfy stochastic ordering. This process is repeated for sub-volumes surrounding each galaxy in the survey. This results in every galaxy being assigned multiple 'recovered' redshifts from which a new redshift estimate is determined. An earlier paper applied sort to a mock Sloan Digital Sky Survey at z ≲ 0.2 and accurately recovered the two-point correlation function (2PCF) on scales ≳ 4  h −1Mpc. In this paper, we test the performance of sort in surveys spanning the redshift range 0.75 < z < 2.25. We used two mock surveys extracted from the Small MultiDark–Planck and Bolshoi–Planck N -body simulations with dark matter haloes that were populated by the Santa Cruz semi-analytic model. We find that sort overall improves redshift estimates, accurately recovers the redshift-space 2PCF ξ(s) on scales ≳ 2.5  h −1Mpc, and provides improved local density estimates in regions of average or higher density, which may allow for improved understanding of how galaxy properties relate to their environments. Recent observations have revealed remarkable insights into the gas reservoir in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxy haloes. In this paper, we characterize the gas in the vicinity of Milky Way and Andromeda analogues in the hestia (High resolution Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area) suite of constrained Local Group (LG) simulations. The hestia suite comprise of a set of three high-resolution arepo -based simulations of the LG, run using the Auriga galaxy formation model. For this paper, we focus only on the z = 0 simulation data sets and generate mock skymaps along with a power spectrum analysis to show that the distributions of ions tracing low-temperature gas (H  i and Si  iii) are more clumpy in comparison to warmer gas tracers (O  vi , O  vii , and O  viii). We compare to the spectroscopic CGM observations of M31 and low-redshift galaxies. hestia underproduces the column densities of the M31 observations, but the simulations are consistent with the observations of low-redshift galaxies. A possible explanation for these findings is that the spectroscopic observations of M31 are contaminated by gas residing in the CGM of the Milky Way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a spectroscopic redshift catalogue of the SMACS J0723.3−7327 field ('Webb's First Deep Field') obtained from JWST /NIRISS grism spectroscopy and supplemented with JWST /NIRSpec and VLT/MUSE redshifts. The catalogue contains a total of 190 sources with secure spectroscopic redshifts, including 156 NIRISS grism redshifts, 123 of which are for sources whose redshifts were previously unknown. These new grism redshifts are secured with two or more spectroscopic features (64 sources), or with a single spectral feature whose identity is secured from the object's nine-band photometric redshift (59 sources). These are complemented with 17 NIRSpec and 48 MUSE redshifts, including six new NIRSpec redshifts identified in this work. In addition to the z cl = 0.39 cluster galaxy redshifts (for which we provide ∼40 new NIRISS absorption-line redshifts), we also find three prominent galaxy overdensities at higher redshifts – at z  = 1.1, z  = 1.4, and z  = 2.0 – that were until now not seen in the JWST /NIRSpec and VLT/MUSE data. The next generation of weak lensing surveys will measure the matter distribution of the local universe with unprecedented precision, allowing the resolution of non-Gaussian features of the convergence field. This encourages the use of higher-order mass-map statistics for cosmological parameter inference. We extend the forward-modelling based methodology introduced in a previous forecast paper to match these new requirements. We provide multiple forecasts for the |$w$| CDM parameter constraints that can be expected from stage 3 and 4 weak lensing surveys. We consider different survey setups, summary statistics and mass map filters including wavelets. We take into account the shear bias, photometric redshift uncertainties, and intrinsic alignment. The impact of baryons is investigated and the necessary scale cuts are applied. We compare the angular power spectrum analysis to peak and minima counts as well as Minkowski functionals of the mass maps. We find a preference for Starlet over Gaussian filters. Our results suggest that using a survey setup with 10 instead of 5 tomographic redshift bins is beneficial. Adding cross-tomographic information improves the constraints on cosmology and especially on galaxy intrinsic alignment for all statistics. In terms of constraining power, we find the angular power spectrum and the peak counts to be equally matched for stage 4 surveys, followed by minima counts and the Minkowski functionals. Combining different summary statistics significantly improves the constraints and compensates the stringent scale cuts. The article titled "Correction to: Redshift drift and strong gravitational lensing" acknowledges a mistake made in a recent paper by the author. The mistake relates to the measurement of the Hubble constant using the difference in redshift between images of a gravitational-lens system. This paper describes the optimization theory on which vpfit , a non-linear least-squares program for modelling absorption spectra, is based. Particular attention is paid to precision. Voigt function derivatives have previously been calculated using numerical finite difference approximations. We show how these can instead be computed analytically using Taylor series expansions and look-up tables. We introduce a new optimization method for an efficient descent path to the best fit, combining the principles used in both the Gauss–Newton and Levenberg–Marquardt algorithms. A simple practical fix for ill-conditioning is described, a common problem when modelling quasar absorption systems. We also summarize how unbiased modelling depends on using an appropriate information criterion to guard against overfitting or underfitting. The methods and the new implementations introduced in this paper are aimed at optimal usage of future data from facilities such as ESPRESSO/VLT and HIRES/ELT, particularly for the most demanding applications such as searches for space–time variations in fundamental constants and attempts to detect cosmological redshift drift. Intensity mapping (IM) with neutral hydrogen is a promising avenue to probe the large-scale structure of the Universe. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope as a connected interferometer, it is possible to make a statistical detection of H  i in the post-reionization Universe. With the MIGHTEE (MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration) survey project observing in the L -band (856 MHz < ν < 1712 MHz, z < 0.66), we can achieve the required sensitivity to measure the H  i IM power spectrum on quasi-linear scales, which will provide an important complementarity to the single-dish IM MeerKAT observations. We present a purpose-built simulation pipeline that emulates the MIGHTEE observations and forecasts the constraints that can be achieved on the H  i power spectrum at z  = 0.27 for k > 0.3 |$\rm {Mpc}^{-1}$| using the foreground avoidance method. We present the power spectrum estimates with the current simulation on the COSMOS field that includes contributions from H  i , noise, and point-source models constructed from the observed MIGHTEE data. The results from our visibility -based pipeline are in qualitative agreement to the already available MIGHTEE data. This paper demonstrates that MeerKAT can achieve very high sensitivity to detect H  i with the full MIGHTEE survey on quasi-linear scales (signal-to-noise ratio >7 at k  = 0.49 |$\rm {Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠) that are instrumental in probing cosmological quantities such as the spectral index of fluctuation, constraints on warm dark matter, the quasi-linear redshift space distortions, and the measurement of the H  i content of the Universe up to z ∼ 0.5. As the statistical power of imaging surveys grows, it is crucial to account for all systematic uncertainties. This is normally done by constructing a model of these uncertainties and then marginalizing over the additional model parameters. The resulting high dimensionality of the total parameter spaces makes inferring the cosmological parameters significantly more costly using traditional Monte Carlo sampling methods. A particularly relevant example is the redshift distribution, p (⁠|$z$|), of the source samples, which may require tens of parameters to describe fully. However, relatively tight priors can be usually placed on these parameters through calibration of the associated systematics. In this paper, we show, quantitatively, that a linearization of the theoretical prediction with respect to these calibrated systematic parameters allows us to analytically marginalize over these extra parameters, leading to a factor of ∼30 reduction in the time needed for parameter inference, while accurately recovering the same posterior distributions for the cosmological parameters that would be obtained through a full numerical marginalization over 160 p (⁠|$z$|) parameters. The determination of distance is fundamental in astrophysics. Gamma-ray sources are poorly characterized in this sense, as the limited angular resolution and poor photon-count statistics in gamma-ray astronomy makes it difficult to associate them to a multiwavelength object with known redshift. Taking the 1794 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with known redshift from the Fermi -LAT latest AGN catalogue, 4LAC–DR3, we employ machine learning techniques to predict the distance of the rest of AGNs based on their spectral and spatial properties. The state-of-the-art catboost algorithm reaches an average 0.56 R2 score with 0.46 root-mean-squared error, predicting an average redshift value of z avg = 0.63, with a maximum z max = 1.97. We use the shap explainer package to gain insights into the variables influence on the outcome, and also study the extragalactic background light implications. In a second part, we use this regression model to predict the redshift of the unassociated sample of the latest LAT point-source catalogue, 4FGL–DR3, using the results of a previous paper to determine the possible AGNs within them. CUSP is a powerful formalism that recovers, from first principles and with no free parameter, all the macroscopic properties of dark matter haloes found in cosmological N -body simulations and unveils the origin of their characteristic features. Since it is not restricted by the limitations of simulations, it covers the whole mass and redshift ranges. In the present Paper we use CUSP to calculate the mass–scale relations holding for halo density profiles fitted to the usual NFW and Einasto functions in the most relevant cosmologies and for the most usual mass definitions. We clarify the origin of these relations and provide accurate analytic expressions holding for all masses and redshifts. The performance of those expressions is compared to that of previous models and to the mass–concentration relation spanning more than 20 orders of magnitude in mass at z  = 0 obtained in recent simulations of a 100 GeV WIMP universe. This paper reviews the question of whether the wide separation double quasar Q2138-431 is a gravitational lens. From early work, the two quasar images are known to have almost identical spectra and redshifts, but no lensing galaxy has so far been detected. In this paper, we used recent deep surveys in infrared and optical bands to search for the presence of a galaxy with the expected properties of a gravitational lens. The search revealed a 5σ detection of a faint galaxy between the two quasar images on a deep J -band frame from the VISTA Science Archive, with apparent magnitude J  = 20.68. Non-detection in the I -band implied a redshift z > 0.6, and mass modelling of the quasar system gave a mass of |$1.31 \times 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| for the lensing galaxy, with mass-to-light ratio M⊙/L⊙ = 9.0. Archival photographic data from the UK 1.2m Schmidt telescope covering 25 yr were used to construct light curves for the two quasar images, which were then cross-correlated to measure any time lag. This showed image B to lead image A by around a year, consistent with 410 d from the mass model. Although the similarity of the spectra and the detection of the lensing galaxy are the most compelling arguments for the classification of Q2138-431 as a gravitational lens, the time delay and mass-to-light ratio provide a consistent picture to support this conclusion. In weak-lensing cosmological studies, peak statistics is sensitive to non-linear structures and thus complementary to cosmic shear two-point correlations. In this paper, we explore a new approach, namely, the peak steepness statistics, with the overall goal to understand the cosmological information embedded there in comparison with the commonly used peak height statistics. We perform the analyses with ray-tracing simulations considering different sets of cosmological parameters Ωm and σ8. A theoretical model to calculate the abundance of high peaks based on steepness is also presented, which can well describe the main trend of the peak distribution from simulations. We employ Δχ2 and Fisher analyses to study the cosmological dependence of the two peak statistics using our limited sets of simulations as well as our theoretical model. Within our considerations without including potential systematic effects, the results show that the steepness statistics tends to have higher sensitivities to the cosmological parameters than the peak height statistics and this advantage is diluted with the increase of the shape noise. Using the theoretical model, we investigate the physical reasons accounting for the different cosmological information embedded in the two statistics. Our analyses indicate that the projection effect from large-scale structures plays an important role to enhance the gain from the steepness statistics. Calibrating the redshift distributions of photometric galaxy samples is essential in weak lensing studies. The self-calibration method combines angular auto- and cross-correlations between galaxies in multiple photometric redshift (photo- z) bins to reconstruct the scattering rates matrix between redshift bins. In this paper, we test a recently proposed self-calibration algorithm using the DECaLS Data Release 9 and investigate to what extent the scattering rates are determined. We first mitigate the spurious angular correlations due to imaging systematics by a machine learning based method. We then improve the algorithm for χ2 minimization and error estimation. Finally, we solve for the scattering matrices, carry out a series of consistency tests, and find reasonable agreements: (1) finer photo- z bins return a high-resolution scattering matrix, and it is broadly consistent with the low-resolution matrix from wider bins; (2) the scattering matrix from the Northern Galactic Cap is almost identical to that from Southern Galactic Cap; (3) the scattering matrices are in reasonable agreement with those constructed from the power spectrum and the weighted spectroscopic subsample. We also evaluate the impact of cosmic magnification. Although it changes little the diagonal elements of the scattering matrix, it affects the off-diagonals significantly. The scattering matrix also shows some dependence on scale cut of input correlations, which may be related to a known numerical degeneracy between certain scattering pairs. This work demonstrates the feasibility of the self-calibration method in real data and provides a practical alternative to calibrate the redshift distributions of photometric samples. In this paper, we present COMET , a Gaussian process emulator of the galaxy power spectrum multipoles in redshift space. The model predictions are based on one-loop perturbation theory and we consider two alternative descriptions of redshift-space distortions: one that performs a full expansion of the real- to redshift-space mapping, as in recent effective field theory models, and another that preserves the non-perturbative impact of small-scale velocities by means of an effective damping function. The outputs of COMET can be obtained at arbitrary redshifts, for arbitrary fiducial background cosmologies, and for a large parameter space that covers the shape parameters ω c , ω b , and ns , as well as the evolution parameters h ,  As , Ω K , w 0, and wa. This flexibility does not impair COMET 's accuracy, since we exploit an exact degeneracy between the evolution parameters that allows us to train the emulator on a significantly reduced parameter space. While the predictions are sped up by two orders of magnitude, validation tests reveal an accuracy of |$0.1\, {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the monopole and quadrupole (⁠|$0.3\, {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the hexadecapole), or alternatively, better than |$0.25\, \sigma$| for all three multipoles in comparison to statistical uncertainties expected for the Euclid survey with a tenfold increase in volume. We show that these differences translate into shifts in mean posterior values that are at most of the same size, meaning that COMET can be used with the same confidence as the exact underlying models. This paper presents a systematic study of the photoionization and thermodynamic properties of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) as traced by rest-frame ultraviolet absorption lines around 26 galaxies at redshift z ≲ 1. The study utilizes both high-quality far-ultraviolet and optical spectra of background QSOs and deep galaxy redshift surveys to characterize the gas density, temperature, and pressure of individual absorbing components and to resolve their internal non-thermal motions. The derived gas density spans more than three decades, from |$\log (n_{\rm H}/{{\rm cm^{-3}}}) \approx -4$| to −1, while the temperature of the gas is confined in a narrow range of log (T /K) ≈ 4.3 ± 0.3. In addition, a weak anticorrelation between gas density and temperature is observed, consistent with the expectation of the gas being in photoionization equilibrium. Furthermore, decomposing the observed line widths into thermal and non-thermal contributions reveals that more than 30 per cent of the components at z ≲ 1 exhibit line widths driven by non-thermal motions, in comparison to <20 per cent found at z ≈ 2–3. Attributing the observed non-thermal line widths to intra-clump turbulence, we find that massive quenched galaxies on average exhibit higher non-thermal broadening/turbulent energy in their CGM compared to star-forming galaxies at z ≲ 1. Finally, strong absorption features from multiple ions covering a wide range of ionization energy (e.g. from Mg  ii to O  iv) can be present simultaneously in a single absorption system with kinematically aligned component structure, but the inferred pressure in different phases may differ by a factor of ≈10. Weak galaxy lensing surveys have consistently reported a lower amplitude for the matter fluctuation spectrum, as measured by the S 8 parameter, than expected in the ΛCDM cosmology favoured by Planck. However, the expansion history follows the predictions of the Planck ΛCDM cosmology to high accuracy, as do measurements of lensing of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. Redshift space distortion measurements also appear to be consistent with Planck ΛCDM. In this paper, we argue that these observations can be reconciled with the Planck ΛCDM cosmology if the matter power spectrum is suppressed more strongly on non-linear scales than assumed in analyses of weak galaxy lensing. We demonstrate this point by fitting a one-parameter model, characterizing a suppression of the non-linear power spectrum, to the KiDS-1000 weak lensing measurements. Such a suppression could be attributed to new properties of the dark matter that affect non-linear scales, or to a response of the matter fluctuations to baryonic feedback processes that are stronger than expected from recent cosmological simulations. Our proposed explanation can be tested using measurements of the amplitude of the matter fluctuation spectrum on linear scales, in particular via high precision redshift space distortion measurements from forthcoming galaxy and quasar redshift surveys. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most explosive phenomena and can be used to study the expansion of Universe. In this paper, we compile a long GRB sample for the E iso– E p correlation from Swift and Fermi observations. The sample contains 221 long GRBs with redshifts from 0.03 to 8.20. From the analysis of data in different redshift intervals, we find no statistically significant evidence for the redshift evolution of this correlation. Then we calibrate the correlation in six subsamples and use the calibrated one to constrain cosmological parameters. Employing a piece-wise approach, we study the redshift evolution of dark energy equation of state (EOS), and find that the EOS tends to be oscillating at low redshift, but consistent with −1 at high redshift. The multimessenger joint observations of GW170817 and GRB170817A shed new light on the study of short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). Not only did it substantiate the assumption that SGRBs originate from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers, but it also confirms that the jet generated by this type of merger must be structured, hence the observed energy of an SGRB depends on the viewing angle from the observer. However, the precise structure of the jet is still subject to debate. Moreover, whether a single unified jet model can be applied to all SGRBs is not known. Another uncertainty is the delay time-scale of BNS mergers with respect to star-formation history of the Universe. In this paper, we conduct a global test of both delay and jet models of BNS mergers across a wide parameter space with simulated SGRBs. We compare the simulated peak flux, redshift, and luminosity distributions with the observed ones and test the goodness-of-fit for a set of models and parameter combinations. Our simulations suggest that GW170817/GRB 170817A and all SGRBs can be understood within the framework of a universal structured jet viewed at different viewing angles. Furthermore, model invoking a jet plus cocoon structure with a lognormal delay time-scale is most favoured. Some other combinations (e.g. a Gaussian delay with a power-law jet model) are also acceptable. The magnification of galaxies in modern galaxy surveys induces additional correlations in the cosmic shear, galaxy–galaxy lensing, and clustering observables used in modern lensing '3 × 2 pt' analyses, due to sample selection. In this paper, we emulate the magnification contribution to all three observables utilizing the SLICS simulations suite, and test the sensitivity of the cosmological model, galaxy bias, and redshift distribution calibration to un-modelled magnification in a Stage-IV-like survey using Monte Carlo sampling. We find that magnification cannot be ignored in any single or combined observable, with magnification inducing >1σ biases in the w 0−σ8 plane, including for cosmic shear and 3 × 2 pt analyses. Significant cosmological biases exist in the 3 × 2 pt and cosmic shear from magnification of the shear sample alone. We show that magnification induces significant biases in the mean of the redshift distribution where a position sample is analysed, which may potentially be used to identify contamination by magnification. In this paper, we report a search for vanishing sources in POSS I red images using virtual observatory (VO) archives, tools, and services. The search, conducted in the framework of the VASCO project, aims at finding POSS I (red) sources not present in recent catalogues like Pan-STARRS DR2 (limiting magnitude r  = 21.4) or Gaia EDR3 (limiting magnitude G  = 21). We found 298 165 sources visible only in POSS I plates, out of which 288 770 had a cross-match within 5 arcsec in other archives (mainly in the infrared), 189 were classified as asteroids, 35 as variable objects, 3592 as artefacts from the comparison to a second digitization (Supercosmos), and 180 as high proper motion objects without information on proper motion in G aia EDR3. The remaining unidentified transients (5399) as well as the 172 163 sources not detected in the optical but identified in the infrared regime are available from a VO compliant archive and can be of interest in searches for strong M-dwarf flares, high-redshift supernovae, asteroids, or other categories of unidentified red transients. No point sources were detected by both POSS-I and POSS-II before vanishing, setting the rate of failed supernovae in the Milky Way during 70 yr to less than one in one billion. This paper provides a new analysis of ROSAT observations of the Coma cluster, to determine the amount of soft X-ray radiation in excess of the contribution from the hot intracluster medium (ICM). The re-analysis is made possible by a high-resolution study of the hot ICM with the XMM–Newton and Planck telescopes out to the cluster's virial radius. The analysis confirms the original findings of a strong excess of soft X-ray radiation, which is likely to be of thermal origin. We find quantitative agreement between the detected soft excess and the physical characteristics of warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments seen in hydrodynamical simulations. We conclude that the most plausible explanation for the soft excess is the presence of ∼10 Mpc long filaments at log  T (K) ≃ 6, with a baryon overdensity of ∼300, converging towards the Coma cluster. This interpretation therefore provides support for the identification of the missing low-redshift baryons with WHIM filaments, as predicted by numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present clustering redshift measurements for Dark Energy Survey (DES) lens sample galaxies used in weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering studies. To perform these measurements, we cross-correlate with spectroscopic galaxies from the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Survey (BOSS) and its extension, eBOSS. We validate our methodology in simulations, including a new technique to calibrate systematic errors that result from the galaxy clustering bias, and we find that our method is generally unbiased in calibrating the mean redshift. We apply our method to the data, and estimate the redshift distribution for 11 different photometrically selected bins. We find general agreement between clustering redshift and photometric redshift estimates, with differences on the inferred mean redshift found to be below |Δ z | = 0.01 in most of the bins. We also test a method to calibrate a width parameter for redshift distributions, which we found necessary to use for some of our samples. Our typical uncertainties on the mean redshift ranged from 0.003 to 0.008, while our uncertainties on the width ranged from 4 to 9 per cent. We determine the [O III]λ5007 equivalent width (EW) distribution of |$1.700\lt \rm {z}\lt 2.274$| rest-frame ultraviolet (UV)-selected (MUV < −19) star-forming galaxies in the GOODS North and South fields. We make use of deep HDUV broad-band photometry catalogues for selection and 3D- HST WFC3/IR grism spectra for measurement of line properties. The [O III]λ5007 EW distribution allows us to measure the abundance of extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) within this population. We model a lognormal distribution to the [O III]λ5007 rest-frame EWs of galaxies in our sample, with location parameter μ = 4.24 ± 0.07 and variance parameter σ = 1.33 ± 0.06. This EW distribution has a mean [O III]λ5007 EW of 168 ± 1 Å. The fractions of |$\rm {z}\sim 2$| rest-UV-selected galaxies with [O III]λ5007 EWs greater than 500, 750, and 1000 Å are measured to be |$6.8^{+1.0}_{-0.9}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , |$3.6^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , and |$2.2^{+0.5}_{-0.4}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , respectively. The EELG fractions do not vary strongly with UV luminosity in the range (−21.6 < M UV < −19.0) considered in this paper, consistent with findings at higher redshifts. We compare our results to |$\rm {z}\sim 5$| and |$\rm {z}\sim 7$| studies, where candidate EELGs have been discovered through Spitzer /IRAC colours, and we identify rapid evolution with redshift in the fraction of star-forming galaxies observed in an extreme emission line phase (a rise by a factor ∼10 between |$\rm {z}\sim 2$| and |$\rm {z}\sim 7$|⁠). This evolution is consistent with an increased incidence of strong bursts in the galaxy population of the reionization era. While this population makes a sub-dominant contribution of the ionizing emissivity at |$\rm {z}\simeq 2$|⁠ , EELGs are likely to dominate the ionizing output in the reionization era. In this paper, we present photometric redshifts for 2.7 million galaxies in the XMM-LSS and COSMOS fields, both with rich optical and near-infrared data from VISTA and HyperSuprimeCam. Both template fitting (using galaxy and active galactic nuclei templates within LePhare) and machine learning (using gp z) methods are run on the aperture photometry of sources selected in the K s-band. The resulting predictions are then combined using a Hierarchical Bayesian model, to produce consensus photometric redshift point estimates and probability distribution functions that outperform each method individually. Our point estimates have a root mean square error of ∼0.08–0.09, and an outlier fraction of ∼3–4 percent when compared to spectroscopic redshifts. We also compare our results to the COSMOS2020 photometric redshifts, which contain fewer sources, but had access to a larger number of bands and greater wavelength coverage, finding that comparable photo- z quality can be achieved (for bright and intermediate luminosity sources where a direct comparison can be made). Our resulting redshifts represent the most accurate set of photometric redshifts (for a catalogue this large) for these deep multisquare degree multiwavelength fields to date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a void clustering analysis in configuration-space using the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 samples. These samples consist of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) combined with the high-redshift tail of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) DR12 CMASS galaxies (called as LRG+CMASS sample), Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs), and quasars (QSOs). We build void catalogues from the three eBOSS DR16 samples using a ZOBOV-based algorithm, providing 2814 voids, 1801 voids, and 4347 voids in the LRG+CMASS, ELG, and QSO samples, respectively, spanning the redshift range 0.6 < z < 2.2. We measure the redshift space distortions around voids using the anisotropic void-galaxy cross-correlation function and we extract the distortion parameter β. We test the methodology on realistic simulations before applying it to the data, and we investigate all our systematic errors on these mocks. We find βLRG(z = 0.74) = 0.415 ± 0.087, βELG(z = 0.85) = 0.665 ± 0.125 and βQSO(z = 1.48) = 0.313 ± 0.134, for the LRG+CMASS, ELG, and QSO sample, respectively. The quoted errors include systematic and statistical contributions. In order to convert our measurements in terms of the growth rate f σ8, we use consensus values of linear bias from the eBOSS DR16 companion papers, resulting in the following constraints: f σ8(z = 0.74) = 0.50 ± 0.11, f σ8(z = 0.85) = 0.52 ± 0.10, and f σ8(z = 1.48) = 0.30 ± 0.13. Our motion through the Universe generates a dipole in the temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and also in the angular distribution of sources. If the cosmological principle is valid, these two dipoles are directly linked, such that the amplitude of one determines that of the other. However, it is a longstanding problem that number counts of radio sources and of quasars at low and intermediate redshifts exhibit a dipole that is well aligned with that of the CMB but with about twice the expected amplitude, leading to a tension reaching up to 4.9σ. In this paper, we revisit the theoretical derivation of the dipole in the sources number counts, explicitly accounting for the redshift evolution of the population of sources. We argue that if the spectral index and magnification bias of the sources vary with redshift, the standard theoretical description of the dipole may be inaccurate. We provide an alternative expression which does not depend on the spectral index, but instead on the time evolution of the population of sources. In this paper, we present photometric redshift (photo- z) estimates for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys, currently the most sensitive optical survey covering the majority of the extragalactic sky. Our photo- z methodology is based on a machine-learning approach, using sparse Gaussian processes augmented with Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) that allow regions of parameter space to be identified and trained separately in a purely data-driven way. The same GMMs are also used to calculate cost-sensitive learning weights that mitigate biases in the spectroscopic training sample. By design, this approach aims to produce reliable and unbiased predictions for all parts of the parameter space present in wide area surveys. Compared to previous literature estimates using the same underlying photometry, our photo- z s are significantly less biased and more accurate at z  > 1, with negligible loss in precision or reliability for resolved galaxies at z < 1. Our photo- z estimates offer accurate predictions for rare high-value populations within the parent sample, including optically selected quasars at the highest redshifts (z  > 6), as well as X-ray or radio continuum selected populations across a broad range of flux (densities) and redshift. Deriving photo- z estimates for the full Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 8, the catalogues provided in this work offer photo- z estimates predicted to be of high quality for ≳9 × 108 galaxies over |${\sim}19\, 400\, \text{deg}^{2}$| and spanning 0 < z ≲ 7, offering one of the most extensive samples of redshift estimates ever produced. The Zwicky Transient Facility recently announced the detection of an optical transient AT2020blt at redshift z  = 2.9, consistent with the afterglow of an on-axis gamma-ray burst. However, no prompt emission was observed. We analyse AT2020blt with detailed models, showing the data are best explained as the afterglow of an on-axis long gamma-ray burst, ruling out other hypotheses such as a cocoon and a low-Lorentz factor jet. We search Fermi data for prompt emission, setting deeper upper limits on the prompt emission than in the original detection paper. Together with KONUS- Wind observations, we show that the gamma-ray efficiency of AT2020blt is |$\lesssim 0.3\!-\!4.5{{\ \rm per\, cent}}$|⁠. We speculate that AT2020blt and AT2021any belong to the low-efficiency tail of long gamma-ray burst distributions that are beginning to be readily observed due to the capabilities of new observatories like the Zwicky Transient Facility. Following Cui et al. (2018 ; hereafter Paper I) on the classification of large-scale environments (LSE) at |$z$| = 0, we push our analysis to higher redshifts and study the evolution of LSE and the baryon distributions in them. Our aim is to investigate how baryons affect the LSE as a function of redshift. In agreement with Paper I, the baryon models have negligible effect on the LSE overall investigated redshifts. We further validate the conclusion obtained in Paper I that the gas web is an unbiased tracer of total matter – even better at high redshifts. By separating the gas mainly by temperature, we find that about 40 per cent of gas is in the so-called warm–hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). This fraction of gas mass in the WHIM decreases with redshift, especially from |$z$|  = 1 (29 per cent) to |$z$|  = 2.1 (10 per cent). By separating the whole WHIM gas mass into the four large-scale environments (i.e. voids, sheets, filaments, and knots), we find that about half of the WHIM gas is located in filaments. Although the total gas mass in WHIM decreases with redshift, the WHIM mass fractions in the different LSE seem unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first catalogue of galaxy cluster candidates derived from the third data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. The sample of clusters has been produced using the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (amico) algorithm. In this analysis, amico considers the luminosity, spatial distribution, and photo- |$z$| of galaxies, without performing any selection based on their colours. In this way, we minimize the dependence of the selection function on the detectability or even absence of the red sequence in the clusters. The catalogue comprises 7988 candidate galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.1 < |$z$| < 0.8 down to signal-to-noise ratio > 3.5 with a purity approaching 95 per cent over the entire redshift range. In addition to the catalogue of galaxy clusters, we also provide a catalogue of galaxies with their probabilistic association to the detected clusters. We quantify the sample purity, completeness, and the uncertainties of the detections properties, such as richness, redshift, and position, by means of mock galaxy catalogues. The simulations are derived directly from the data to fully reproduce their statistical properties including photo- |$z$| uncertainties, unknown absorption across the survey, missing data, spatial correlation of galaxies, and galaxy clusters. Being based on real data, such mock catalogues do not have to rely on the assumptions on which numerical simulations and semi-analytic models are based on. We investigate the 'Local Hole', an anomalous underdensity in the local galaxy environment, by extending our previous galaxy K- band number-redshift and number-magnitude counts to ≈90 per cent of the sky. Our redshift samples are taken from the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the 2M++ catalogues, limited to K < 11.5. We find that both surveys are in good agreement, showing an |$\approx 21\!-\!22{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| underdensity at z < 0.075 when compared to our homogeneous counts model that assumes the same luminosity function (LF) and other parameters as in our earlier papers. Using the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) for n (K) galaxy counts, we measure an underdensity relative to this model of |$20 \pm 2 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at K < 11.5, which is consistent in both form and scale with the observed n (z) underdensity. To examine further the accuracy of the counts model, we compare its prediction for the fainter n (K) counts of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We further compare these data with a model assuming the parameters of a previous study where little evidence for the Local Hole was found. At 13 < K < 16, we find a significantly better fit for our galaxy counts model, arguing for our higher LF normalization. Although our implied underdensity of |$\approx 20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| means local measurements of the Hubble Constant have been overestimated by ≈3 per cent, such a scale of underdensity is in tension with a global ΛCDM cosmology at an ≈3 σ level. Correlations in and with the flux transmission of the Lyman α (Ly α) forest in the spectra of high-redshift quasars are powerful cosmological tools, yet these measurements can be compromised if the intrinsic quasar continuum is significantly uncertain. One particularly problematic case is broad-absorption-line (BAL) quasars, which exhibit blueshifted absorption associated with many spectral features that are consistent with outflows of up to ∼0.1 c. As these absorption features can both fall in the forest region and be difficult to distinguish from Ly α absorption, cosmological analyses eliminate the ∼12–16 per cent of quasars that exhibit BALs. In this paper, we explore an alternate approach that includes BALs in the Ly α autocorrelation function, with the exception of the expected locations of the BAL absorption troughs. This procedure returns over 95 per cent of the path-length that is lost by the exclusion of BALs, as well as increasing the density of sightlines. We show that including BAL quasars reduces the fractional uncertainty in the covariance matrix and correlation function by 12 per cent and does not significantly change the shape of the correlation function relative to analyses that exclude BAL quasars. We also evaluate different definitions of BALs, masking strategies, and potential differences in the quasar continuum in the forest region for BALs with different amounts of absorption. In this paper, we study the cosmic age problem in holographic (HDE) and generalized ghost dark energy (GGDE) models. To this end, we consider these two models in presence of non-linear interaction terms for three special cases, presented in the literature. We explain the impacts of the mentioned interaction terms on the cosmic age during the evolution of the Universe. There are many old cosmic objects (OCOs) which their evaluated age is not consistent with that of dark energy models. Here, we confine our attention on five cases of more known OCOs at different redshift. The purpose is to constrain the DE models, using the age of these OCOs. We obtain boundary values for free parameters of the HDE (b 2 and c) using the age test and find that, such non-linear interactions can alleviate the age problem in spite of the linear one. The GGDE was already constrained using a joint analysis of data sets SHBC. We find a new bound for ξ that wasn't predicted via SHBC analysis. This paper aims to quantify how the lowest halo mass that can be detected with galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing depends on the quality of the observations and the characteristics of the observed lens systems. Using simulated data, we measure the lowest detectable NFW mass at each location of the lens plane, in the form of detailed sensitivity maps. In summary, we find that: (i) the lowest detectable mass M low decreases linearly as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increases and the sensitive area is larger when we decrease the noise; (ii) a moderate increase in angular resolution (0.07″ versus 0.09″) and pixel scale (0.01″ versus 0.04″) improves the sensitivity by on average 0.25 dex in halo mass, with more significant improvement around the most sensitive regions; (iii) the sensitivity to low-mass objects is largest for bright and complex lensed galaxies located inside the caustic curves and lensed into larger Einstein rings (i.e rE ≥ 1.0″). We find that for the sensitive mock images considered in this work, the minimum mass that we can detect at the redshift of the lens lies between 1.5 × 108 and |$3\times 10^{9}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. We derive analytic relations between M low, the SNR and resolution and discuss the impact of the lensing configuration and source structure. Our results start to fill the gap between approximate predictions and real data and demonstrate the challenging nature of calculating precise forecasts for gravitational imaging. In light of our findings, we discuss possible strategies for designing strong lensing surveys and the prospects for HST , Keck, ALMA, Euclid and other future observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the first of a series of papers constraining cosmological parameters with weak lensing peak statistics using ∼ 450 deg2 of imaging data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-450). We measure high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR: ν) weak lensing convergence peaks in the range of 3 < ν < 5, and employ theoretical models to derive expected values. These models are validated using a suite of simulations. We take into account two major systematic effects, the boost factor and the effect of baryons on the mass-concentration relation of dark matter haloes. In addition, we investigate the impacts of other potential astrophysical systematics including the projection effects of large-scale structures, intrinsic galaxy alignments, as well as residual measurement uncertainties in the shear and redshift calibration. Assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter model, we find constraints for S8=σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.746+0.046-0.107 S8=σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.746-0.107+0.046 according to the degeneracy direction of the cosmic shear analysis and Σ8=σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.38=0.696+0.048-0.050 Σ8=σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.38=0.696-0.050+0.048 based on the derived degeneracy direction of our high-SNR peak statistics. The difference between the power index of S8 and in Σ8 indicates that combining cosmic shear with peak statistics has the potential to break the degeneracy in σ8 and Ωm. Our results are consistent with the cosmic shear tomographic correlation analysis of the same data set and ∼2σ lower than the Planck 2016 results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a galaxy redshift survey, the objects to be targeted for spectra are selected from a photometrically observed sample. The observed magnitudes and colours of galaxies in this parent sample will be affected by their peculiar velocities, through relativistic Doppler and relativistic beaming effects. In this paper, we compute the resulting expected changes in galaxy photometry. The magnitudes of the relativistic effects are a function of redshift, stellar mass, galaxy velocity and velocity direction. We focus on the CMASS sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which is selected on the basis of colour and magnitude. We find that 0.10 per cent of the sample (~585 galaxies) has been scattered into the targeted region of colour-magnitude space by relativistic effects, and conversely 0.09 per cent of the sample (~532 galaxies) has been scattered out. Observational consequences of these effects include an asymmetry in clustering statistics, which we explore in a companion paper. Here, we compute a set of weights that can be used to remove the effect of modulations introduced into the density field inferred from a galaxy sample. We conclude by investigating the possible effects of these relativistic modulation on large-scale clustering of the galaxy sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

General relativistic effects have long been predicted to subtly influence the observed large-scale structure of the universe. The current generation of galaxy redshift surveys has reached a size where detection of such effects is becoming feasible. In this paper, we report the first detection of the redshift asymmetry from the cross-correlation function of two galaxy populations that is consistent with relativistic effects. The data set is taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 CMASS galaxy sample, and we detect the asymmetry at the 2.7σ level by applying a shell-averaged estimator to the cross-correlation function. Our measurement dominates at scales around 10 h-1 Mpc, larger than those over which the gravitational redshift profile has been recently measured in galaxy clusters, but smaller than scales for which linear perturbation theory is likely to be accurate. The detection significance varies by 0.5σ with the details of our measurement and tests for systematic effects. We have also devised two null tests to check for various survey systematics and show that both results are consistent with the null hypothesis. We measure the dipole moment of the cross-correlation function and from this the asymmetry is also detected, at the 2.8σ level. The amplitude and scale dependence of the clustering asymmetries are approximately consistent with the expectations of general relativity and a biased galaxy population, within large uncertainties. We test the bandpass smoothness performance of two prototype Square Kilometre Array (SKA) SKA1-Low log-periodic dipole antennas, SKALA2 and SKALA3 ('SKA Log-periodic Antenna'), and the current dipole from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) precursor telescope. Throughout this paper, we refer to the output complex-valued voltage response of an antenna when connected to a low-noise amplifier, as the dipole bandpass. In Paper I, the bandpass spectral response of the log-periodic antenna being developed for the SKA1-Low was estimated using numerical electromagnetic simulations and analysed using low-order polynomial fittings, and it was compared with the HERA antenna against the delay spectrum metric. In this work, realistic simulations of the SKA1-Low instrument, including frequency-dependent primary beam shapes and array configuration, are used with a weighted leastsquares polynomial estimator to assess the ability of a given prototype antenna to perform the SKA Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) statistical experiments. This work complements the ideal estimator tolerances computed for the proposed EoR science experiments in Trott & Wayth, with the realized performance of an optimal and standard estimation (calibration) procedure. With a sufficient sky calibration model at higher frequencies, all antennas have bandpasses that are sufficiently smooth to meet the tolerances described in Trott & Wayth to perform the EoR statistical experiments, and these are primarily limited by an adequate sky calibration model and the thermal noise level in the calibration data. At frequencies of the Cosmic Dawn, which is of principal interest to SKA as one of the first next-generation telescopes capable of accessing higher redshifts, the MWA dipole and SKALA3 antenna have adequate performance, while the SKALA2 design will impede the ability to explore this era. Emulation of the Global (sky-averaged) 21-cm signal with neural networks has been shown to be an essential tool for physical signal modelling. In this paper, we present globalemu , a Global 21-cm signal emulator that uses redshift as a character-defining variable alongside a set of astrophysical parameters to estimate the signal brightness temperature. Combined with physically motivated data pre-processing, this makes for a reliable and fast emulator that is relatively insensitive to the network design. globalemu  can emulate a high-resolution signal in 1.3 ms in comparison to 133 ms, a factor of 102 improvement, when using the existing public state-of-the-art 21cmGEM. We illustrate, with the standard astrophysical models used to train 21cmGEM , that globalemu  is almost twice as accurate and for a test set of ≈1700 signals we achieve a mean root mean squared error of 2.52 mK across the band z  = 7–28 [≈10 per cent the expected noise of the Radio Experiment for the Analysis of Cosmic Hydrogen (REACH)]. The models are parametrized by the star formation efficiency, f *, minimum virial circular velocity, V c, X-ray efficiency, f X, cosmic microwave background optical depth, τ, the slope and low energy cut-off of the X-ray spectral energy density, α and ν min, respectively, and the mean free path of ionizing photons, R mfp. globalemu  provides a flexible framework for easily emulating updated simulations of the Global signal and in addition the neutral fraction history.
