Search

There has been a recent resurgence in hydroxyl (OH) megamaser research driven by Square Kilometre Array (SKA) precursor/pathfinder telescopes. This will continue in the lead-up to the SKA mid-frequency array, which will greatly expand our view of OH megamasers and their cosmic evolution over ≳80 per cent of the age of the Universe. This is expected to yield large scientific returns as OH megamasers trace galaxy mergers, extreme star formation, high molecular gas densities, and potentially binary/dual supermassive black hole systems. In this paper, we predict the distortion to the OH luminosity function that a magnification bias will inflict, and in turn, predict the distortion on the OH megamaser number counts as a function of redshift. We identify spectral flux density thresholds that will enable efficient lensed OH megamaser selection in large spectral line surveys with MeerKAT and SKA. The surface density of lensed galaxies that could be discovered in this way is a strong function of the redshift evolution of the OH megamaser luminosity function, with predictions as high as ∼1 lensed OH source per square degree at high redshifts (z ≳ 1) for anticipated SKA spectral line survey designs. This could enable efficient selection of some of the most highly obscured galaxies in the Universe. This high-redshift selection efficiency, in combination with the large survey speed of the SKA at ≲1 GHz frequencies and the high magnifications possible with compact OH emission regions (μOH ≫ 10), will enable a transformational view of OH in the Universe. The afterglow of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) has been widely argued to arise from the interaction of a relativistic outflow with its ambient medium. During such an interaction, a pair of shocks are generated: a forward shock that propagates into the medium and a reverse shock that propagates into the outflow. Extensive studies have been conducted on the emission from the forward shock viewed off-axis. Furthermore, the observation of a reverse shock in an on-axis short GRB suggests that the reverse shock can produce an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave-detected merger. In this paper, we investigate the contribution of the reverse shock to the afterglow from a top-hat jet viewed off-axis, and apply our model to some short GRBs previously modelled by an off-axis emission. We employ the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to get the model parameters (i.e. the jet's half-opeaning angle θ j , the viewing angle θobs, the initial Lorentz factor Γ0, and the isotropic energy E iso). Our model successfully reproduces off-axis afterglow emission without a structured jet. In addition, our calculations suggest that the reverse shock may produce a prominent feature in an early afterglow, which can be potentially observed in an orphan optical afterglow. Strong gravitational lensing can be used to find otherwise invisible dark matter subhaloes. In such an analysis, the lens galaxy mass model is a significant source of systematic uncertainty. In this paper, we analyse the effect of angular complexity in the lens model. We use multipole perturbations that introduce low-order deviations from pure ellipticity in the isodensity contours, keeping the radial density profile fixed. We find that, in Hubble Space Telescope -like data, multipole perturbations consistent with those seen in galaxy isophotes are very effective at causing false positive substructure detections. We show that the effectiveness of this degeneracy depends on the deviation from a pure ellipse and the lensing configuration. We find that, when multipoles of 1 per cent are allowed in the lens model, the area in the observation where a subhalo could be detected drops by a factor of 3. Sensitivity away from the lensed images is mostly lost. However, the mass limit of detectable objects on or close to the lensed images does not change. We do not expect the addition of multipole perturbations to lens models to have a significant effect on the ability of strong lensing to constrain the underlying dark matter model. However, given the high rate of false positive detections, angular complexity beyond the elliptical power law should be included for such studies to be reliable. The MeerKAT International GigaHertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) is one of the MeerKAT large survey projects, designed to pathfind SKA key science. MIGHTEE is undertaking deep radio imaging of four well-observed fields (COSMOS, XMM -LSS, ELAIS S1, and CDFS) totaling 20 square degrees to μJy sensitivities. Broad-band imaging observations between 880 and1690 MHz yield total intensity continuum, spectro-polarimetry, and atomic hydrogen spectral imaging. Early science data from MIGHTEE are being released from initial observations of COSMOS and XMM –LSS. This paper describes the spectro-polarimetric observations, the polarization data processing of the MIGHTEE early science fields, and presents polarization data images and catalogues. The catalogues include radio spectral index, redshift information, and Faraday rotation measure synthesis results for 13 267 total intensity radio sources down to a polarized intensity detection limit of ∼20 μJy bm−1. Polarized signals were detected from 324 sources. For the polarized detections, we include a catalogue of Faraday Depth from both Faraday Synthesis and Q, U fitting, as well as total intensity and polarization spectral indices. The distribution of redshift of the total radio sources and detected polarized sources are the same, with median redshifts of 0.86 and 0.82, respectively. Depolarization of the emission at longer-wavelengths is seen to increase with decreasing total-intensity spectral index, implying that depolarization is intrinsic to the radio sources. Spiral structure can contribute significantly to a galaxy's luminosity. However, only rarely are proper photometric models of spiral arms used in decompositions. As we show in the previous work, including the spirals as a separate component in a photometric model of a galaxy would both allow to obtain their structural parameters, and reduce the systematic errors in estimating the parameters of other components. Doing so in different wavebands, one can explore how their properties vary with the wavelength. In this paper, second in this series, we perform decomposition of M 51 in 17 bands, from the far-ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared, using imaging from the DustPedia project. We use the same 2D photometric model of spiral structure where each arm is modelled independently. The complex and asymmetric spiral structure in M 51 is reproduced relatively well with our model. We analyse the differences between models with and without spiral arms, and investigate how the fit parameters change with wavelength. In particular, we find that the spiral arms demonstrate the largest width in the optical, whereas their contribution to the galaxy luminosity is most significant in the UV. The disc central intensity drops by a factor of 1.25–3 and its exponential scale changes by 5–10 per cent when spiral arms are included, depending on wavelength. Taking into account the full light distribution across the arms, we do not observe the signs of a long-lived density wave in the spiral pattern of M 51 as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite increasingly precise observations and sophisticated theoretical models, the discrepancy between measurements of H 0 from the cosmic microwave background or from baryon acoustic oscillations combined with big bang nucleosynthesis versus those from local distance ladder probes – commonly known as the ' H 0 tension' – continues to perplex the scientific community. To address this tension, early dark energy (EDE) models have been proposed as alternatives to Lambda cold dark matter, as they can change the observed sound horizon and the inferred Hubble constant from measurements based on this. In this paper, we investigate the use of Bayesian model averaging (BMA) to evaluate EDE as a solution to the H 0 tension. BMA consists of assigning a prior to the model and deriving a posterior as for any other unknown parameter in a Bayesian analysis. BMA can be computationally challenging in that one must approximate the joint posterior of both model and parameters. Here, we present a computational strategy for BMA that exploits existing Markov chain Monte Carlo software and combines model-specific posteriors post hoc. In application to a comprehensive analysis of cosmological data sets, we quantify the impact of EDE on the H 0 discrepancy. We find an EDE model probability of |${\sim} 90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| whenever we include the H 0 measurement from Type Ia supernovae in the analysis, whereas the other data show a strong preference for the standard cosmological model. We finally present constraints on common parameters marginalized over both cosmological models. We conducted multi-epoch, multifrequency parsec-scale studies on the gigahertz-peaked spectrum quasar PKS 0858 − 279 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Our observations on 2005 November 26 elucidated a weak core, characterized by an inverted spectrum, and a distinctly bent jet that exhibited a notable bright feature in its Stokes I emission. Through comprehensive analysis of polarization and spectral data, we inferred the formation of a shock wave within this feature, stemming from interactions with a dense cloud in the ambient medium. In this paper, Very Long Baseline Interferometry- Gaia astrometry further reinforces the core identification. With a deep analysis of six additional VLBA epochs spanning from 2007 to 2018, we observed that while the quasar's parsec-scale structure remained largely consistent, there were discernible flux density changes. These variations strongly imply the recurrent ejection of plasma into the jet. Complementing our VLBA data, RATAN-600 observations of the integrated spectra suggested an interaction between standing and travelling shock waves in 2005. Moreover, our multi-epoch polarization analysis revealed a drastic drop in rotation measure values from 6000 to 1000 rad m−2 within a single year, attributable to diminishing magnetic fields and particle density in an external cloud. This change is likely instigated by a shock in the cloud, triggered by the cloud's interaction with the jet, subsequently prompting its expansion. Notably, we also observed a significant change in the magnetic field direction of the jet, from being perpendicular post its observed bend to being perpendicular prior to the bend – an alteration possibly induced by the dynamics of shock waves. Rotationally enhanced red giant stars are astrophysically interesting but rare. In this paper, we present a catalogue of 3217 active red giant candidates in the APOGEE DR16 (Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment – Data Release 16) survey. We use a control sample in the well-studied Kepler fields to demonstrate a strong relationship between rotation and anomalies in the spectroscopic solution relative to typical giants. Stars in the full survey with similar solutions are identified as candidates. We use v sin i measurements to confirm that 50 ± 1.2 per cent of our DR16 candidates are rotationally enhanced (v sin i > 5 km s−1), compared to 4.9 ± 0.2 per cent in the Kepler control sample. In both, the Kepler control sample and a control sample from DR16, we find that there are 3–4 times as many giants rotating with intermediate velocities of 5 < v sin i < 10 km s−1 compared to velocities of v sin i > 10 km s−1, the traditional threshold for rapid rotation for red giants. The vast majority of intermediate rotators are not spectroscopically anomalous. We use binary diagnostics from APOGEE and Gaia to infer a binary fraction of 73 ± 2.4 per cent among the confirmed rotationally enhanced giants in DR16. We identify a significant bias in the reported metallicity for DR16 candidates with complete spectroscopic solutions, with a median offset of −0.37 dex in [M/H] from a control sample. As such, up to 10 per cent of stars with reported [M/H]<−1 are not truly metal poor. Satellite galaxies within the Milky Way's (MW's) virial radius R vir are typically devoid of cold gas due to ram pressure stripping by the MW's corona. The density of this corona is poorly constrained today and essentially unconstrained in the past, but can be estimated using ram pressure stripping. In this paper, we probe the MW's corona at z ≈ 1.6 using the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We assume that (i) Draco's orbit is determined by its interaction with the MW, whose dark matter halo we evolve in time following cosmologically motivated prescriptions, (ii) Draco's star formation was quenched by ram pressure stripping and (iii) the MW's corona is approximately smooth, spherical, and in hydrostatic equilibrium. We used Gaia proper motions to set the initial conditions and Draco's star formation history to estimate its past gas content. We found indications that Draco was stripped of its gas during the first pericentric passage. Using 3D hydrodynamical simulations at a resolution that enables us to resolve individual supernovae and assuming no tidal stripping, which we estimate to be a minor effect, we find a density of the MW corona ≥8 × 10−4 cm−3 at a radius ≈0.72 R vir. This provides evidence that the MW's corona was already in place at z ≈ 1.6 and with a higher density than today. If isothermal, this corona would have contained all the baryons expected by the cosmological baryon fraction. Extrapolating to today shows good agreement with literature constraints if feedback has removed ≲30 per cent of baryons accreted on to the halo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filamentary flows towards the centre of molecular clouds have been recognized as a crucial process in the formation and evolution of stellar clusters. In this paper, we present a comprehensive observational study that investigates the gas properties and kinematics of the Giant Molecular Cloud G148.24+00.41 using the observations of CO (1-0) isotopologues. We find that the cloud is massive (105 M⊙) and is one of the most massive clouds of the outer Galaxy. We identified six likely velocity coherent filaments in the cloud having length, width, and mass in the range of 14–38 pc, 2.5–4.2 pc, and (1.3–6.9) × 103 M⊙, respectively. We find that the filaments are converging towards the central area of the cloud, and the longitudinal accretion flows along the filaments are in the range of ∼ 26–264 M⊙ Myr−1. The cloud has fragmented into seven clumps having mass in the range of ∼ 260–2100 M⊙ and average size around ∼ 1.4 pc, out of which the most massive clump is located at the hub of the filamentary structures, near the geometric centre of the cloud. Three filaments are found to be directly connected to the massive clump and transferring matter at a rate of ∼ 675 M⊙ Myr−1. The clump hosts a near-infrared cluster. Our results show that large-scale filamentary accretion flows towards the central region of the collapsing cloud is an important mechanism for supplying the matter necessary to form the central high-mass clump and subsequent stellar cluster. Accretion luminosity of young star FU Ori (FUOR) increased from undetectable levels to hundreds of L⊙ in 1937 and remains nearly as high at the present time. In a recent paper, we showed how Extreme Evaporation (EE) of a young gas giant planet that migrated to a ∼10 d orbit around the star may power FUOR. However, our model assumed a power-law mass–radius relation for the evaporating planet. Here, we employ a stellar evolution code to model mass losing planets. We find that adiabatic planets expand rapidly, which results in runaway FUOR bursts. Superadiabatic planets contract while losing mass; their outbursts are dimming with time. Long steadily declining bursts such as FUOR require relatively fine-tuned internal planetary structure, which may be rare. More commonly we find that superadiabatic planets contract too rapidly and their EE falters, leading to FUOR burst stutter. This stutter allows a single planet to produce many short repeating bursts, which may be relevant to bursts observed in V346 Nor, V899, and V1647. We compute broad-band spectra of our best-fitting scenario for FUOR. Since the outburst is triggered behind the planet location, the mid-infrared (mid-IR) emission rises many months before the optical, similar to bursts in Gaia -17bpi and Gaia -18dvy. We show that in outbursts powered by the classic thermal instability, mid-IR lags the optical, whereas the dead zone activation models predict mid-IR light precede the optical burst by many years to decades. Many accreting black holes and neutron stars exhibit rapid variability in their X-ray light curves, termed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). The most commonly observed type is the low-frequency (≲10 Hz), type-C QPO, while only a handful of sources exhibit high-frequency QPOs (≳60 Hz). The leading model for the type-C QPO is Lense-Thirring precession of a hot, geometrically thick accretion flow that is misaligned with the black hole's spin axis. However, existing versions of this model have not taken into account the effects of a surrounding, geometrically thin disc on the precessing, inner, geometrically thick flow. In Bollimpalli et. al 2023 , using a set of GRMHD simulations of tilted, truncated accretion discs, we confirmed that the outer thin disc slows down the precession rate of the precessing torus, which has direct observational implications for type-C QPOs. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of those simulations and compare them with an aligned truncated disc simulation. We find that the misalignment of the disc excites additional variability in the inner hot flow, which is absent in the comparable aligned-disc simulations. This suggests that the misalignment may be a crucial requirement for producing QPOs. We attribute this variability to global vertical oscillations of the inner torus at epicyclic frequencies corresponding to the transition radius. This paper presents a method for finding ram pressure stripped (RPS) galaxy candidates by performing a morphological analysis of galaxy images obtained from the Legacy survey. We consider a sample of about 600 galaxies located in different environments such as groups and clusters, tidally interacting pairs and the field. The sample includes 160 RPS previously classified in the literature into classes from J1 to J5, based on the increasing level of disturbances. Our morphological analysis was done using the astromorphlib software followed by the inspection of diagnostic diagrams involving combinations of different parameters like the asymmetry (A), concentration (C), Sérsic index (n), and bulge strength parameters |$F(G,\, M_{20})$|⁠. We found that some of those diagrams display a distinct region in which galaxies classified as J3, J4, and J5 decouples from isolated galaxies. We call this region as the morphological transition zone and we also found that tidally interacting galaxies in pairs are predominant within this zone. Nevertheless, after visually inspecting the objects in the morphological transition zone to discard obvious contaminants, we ended up with 33 bona fide new RPS candidates in the studied nearby groups and clusters (Hydra, Fornax, and CLoGS sample), of which one-third show clear evidence of unwinding arms. Here, we consider the general radiative transfer theory in a magnetized atmosphere for any value of parameter |$x=\omega _B/\omega \simeq 0.933\times 10^{-8}\lambda (\mu \mathrm{m}) B(\text{G})$|⁠ , where ω B is the cyclotron frequency of electron rotation and ω is the angular frequency of considered monochromatic radiation. The main term of the radiative transfer equations  |$\textbf {J}_{\alpha \beta }$| for the Stokes parameters I, V, U , and Q describes the scattering of radiation coming from all directions and distances. All Stokes parameters of the incident radiation mutually transform into each other along their path due to interference and different cross-sections for them. To find this transformation of the Stokes parameters one has to solve the complex system of transfer equations without the sources and term |$\textbf {J}_{\alpha \beta }$|⁠. This is done in our paper. First, we present the general solution and then give the solution for the case of a homogeneous magnetic field, where the formulas have clear algebraic form. We note that for small parameter x our formulas describe the known Faraday rotation. Our formulas allow us to derive an integral equation for the density of polarized radiation, multiple scattered in a magnetized atmosphere for any values of the parameter x. The obtained correct radiation transfer equation allows us to calculate the Stokes parameters of radiation emerging from an atmosphere, in particular, for the Milne problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we construct the circular velocity curve of the Milky Way out to ∼30 kpc, providing an updated model of the dark matter density profile. We derive precise parallaxes for 120 309 stars with a data-driven model, using APOGEE DR17 spectra combined with Gaia DR3, 2MASS , and WISE photometry. At outer galactic radii up to 30 kpc, we find a significantly faster decline in the circular velocity curve compared to the inner parts. This decline is better fit with a cored Einasto profile with a slope parameter |$0.91^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$| than a generalized Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) profile. The virial mass of the best-fitting dark matter halo profile is only |$1.81^{+0.06}_{-0.05}\times 10^{11}$| M⊙, significantly lower than what a generalized NFW profile delivers. We present a study of the potential systematics, affecting mainly large radii. Such a low mass for the Galaxy is driven by the functional forms tested, given that it probes beyond our measurements. It is found to be in tension with mass measurements from globular clusters, dwarf satellites, and streams. Our best-fitting profile also lowers the expected dark matter annihilation signal flux from the galactic centre by more than an order of magnitude, compared to an NFW profile-fit. In future work, we will explore profiles with more flexible functional forms to more fully leverage the circular velocity curve and observationally constrain the properties of the Milky Way's dark matter halo. A gold standard for the study of M dwarfs is the eclipsing binary CM Draconis. It is rare because it is bright (J mag = 8.5) and contains twin fully convective stars on an almost perfectly edge-on orbit. Both masses and radii were previously measured to better than 1 per cent precision, amongst the best known. We use 15 sectors of data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to show that CM Draconis is the gift that keeps on giving. Our paper has three main components. First, we present updated parameters, with radii and masses constrained to previously unheard-of precisions of ≈0.06 and ≈0.12 per cent, respectively. Secondly, we discover strong and variable spot modulation, suggestive of spot clustering and an activity cycle of the order of ≈4 yr. Thirdly, we discover 163 flares. We find a relationship between the spot modulation and flare rate, with flares more likely to occur when the stars appear brighter. This may be due to a positive correlation between flares and the occurrence of bright spots (plages). The flare rate is surprisingly not reduced during eclipse, but one flare may show evidence of being occulted. We suggest that the flares may be preferentially polar, which has positive implications for the habitability of planets orbiting M dwarfs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) is scheduled to launch soon, which is expected to provide a vast amount of image potentially containing low-surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). However, detecting and characterizing LSBGs is known to be challenging due to their faint surface brightness, posing a significant hurdle for traditional detection methods. In this paper, we propose LSBGnet, a deep neural network specifically designed for automatic detection of LSBGs. We established LSBGnet-SDSS model using data set from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The results demonstrate a significant improvement compared to our previous work, achieving a recall of 97.22 per cent and a precision of 97.27 per cent on the SDSS test set. Furthermore, we use the LSBGnet-SDSS model as a pre-training model, employing transfer learning to retrain the model with LSBGs from Dark Energy Survey (DES), and establish the LSBGnet-DES model. Remarkably, after retraining the model on a small DES sample, it achieves over 90 per cent precision and recall. To validate the model's capabilities, we utilize the trained LSBGnet-DES model to detect LSBG candidates within a selected 5 sq. deg area in the DES footprint. Our analysis reveals the detection of 204 LSBG candidates, characterized by a mean surface brightness range of |$23.5\ \mathrm{ mag}\ \mathrm{ arcsec}^{-2}\le \bar{\mu }_{\text{eff}}(g)\le 26.8\ \mathrm{ mag}\ \mathrm{ arcsec}^{-2}$| and a half-light radius range of 1.4 arcsec ≤ r 1/2 ≤ 8.3 arcsec. Notably, 116 LSBG candidates exhibit a half-light radius ≥2.5 arcsec. These results affirm the remarkable performance of our model in detecting LSBGs, making it a promising tool for the upcoming CSST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 (M |$_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$|⁠), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are |${\rm H}\, \rm{\small I}$| deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation histories and gas masses of the two dwarf satellite galaxies, we show that they could not have been quenched solely by direct ram pressure stripping of their interstellar media, as is common in denser environments. Instead, we find that separation of the satellites from pristine gas inflows, coupled with stellar-feedback-driven outflows from the satellites (jointly referred to as the starvation quenching model), can quench the satellites on time-scales consistent with their likely infall times into NGC 3109's halo. It is currently believed that starvation is caused by 'weak' ram pressure that prevents low-density, weakly bound gas from being accreted on to the dwarf satellite, but cannot directly remove the denser interstellar medium. This suggests that star-formation-driven outflows serve two purposes in quenching satellites in low-mass environments: outflows from the host form a low-density circumgalactic medium that cannot directly strip the interstellar media from its satellites, but is sufficient to remove loosely bound gaseous outflows from the dwarf satellites driven by their own star formation. We present a two-dimensional study of the gas distribution, excitation, and kinematics of the OH absorber galaxy IRAS 19154+2704 using Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph integral field unit observations. Its continuum image shows a disturbed morphology indicative of a past or ongoing interaction. The ionized gas emission presents two kinematic components: a narrow (σ ≲ 300 km s−1) component that may be tracing the gas orbiting in the galaxy potential and a broad (σ ≳ 500 km s−1) component, which is produced by an active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflow, with velocities reaching −500 km s−1, which may exceed the escape velocity of the galaxy. The emission-line ratios and Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagrams confirm that the gas excitation in the inner ∼2 kpc is mainly due to the AGN, while in regions farther away, a contribution from star formation is observed. We estimate a mass-outflow rate of |$\dot{M}_{\rm out}=4.0\pm 2.6$|  M⊙ yr−1 at a distance of 850 pc from the nucleus. The corresponding outflow kinetic power, |$\dot{E}_{\rm out} = (2.5\pm 1.6)\times 10^{42}$|  erg s−1, is only 3 × 10−4 Lbol (the AGN luminosity), but the large mass-outflow rate, if kept for an ∼10 Myr AGN life cycle, will expel ≈108 M⊙ in ionized gas alone. This is the sixth of a series of papers in which we have investigated the kinematics of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, most of which are interacting galaxies showing OH megamasers. IRAS 19154 shows the strongest signatures of an active AGN, supporting an evolutionary scenario: interactions trigger AGN that fully appears in the most advanced stages of the interaction. The merging of a binary system involving two neutron stars (NSs), or a black hole (BH) and an NS, often results in the emission of an electromagnetic (EM) transient. One component of this EM transient is the epic explosion known as a kilonova (KN). The characteristics of the KN emission can be used to probe the equation of state (EoS) of NS matter responsible for its formation. We predict KN light curves from computationally simulated BH–NS mergers, by using the 3D radiative transfer code possis. We investigate two EoSs spanning most of the allowed range of the mass–radius diagram. We also consider a soft EoS compatible with the observational data within the so-called 2-families scenario in which hadronic stars co-exist with strange stars. Computed results show that the 2-families scenario, characterized by a soft EoS, should not produce a KN unless the mass of the binary components are small (M BH ≤ 6 M⊙ and M NS ≤ 1.4 M⊙) and the BH is rapidly spinning (χBH ≥ 0.3). In contrast, a strong KN signal potentially observable from future surveys (e.g. the Vera Rubin Observatory) is produced in the 1-family scenario for a wider region of the parameter space, and even for non-rotating BHs (χBH = 0) when M BH = 4 M⊙ and M NS = 1.2 M⊙. We also provide a fit that allows for the calculation of the unbound mass from the observed KN magnitude, without running timely and costly radiative transfer simulations. Findings presented in this paper will be used to interpret light curves anticipated during the fourth observing run (O4), of the advanced LIGO, advanced Virgo, and KAGRA interferometers and thus to constrain the EoS of NS matter. In this paper, we use an approximative stable limit cycle solution of the hybrid Van der Pol-Duffing differential equation, obtained by homotopy and Poincaré–Lindstedt perturbation methods, to describe the toroidal component of the solar magnetic field B (t). This analytic approach allows us to recover an explicit relationship between the parameter μ, which is related to the meridional circulation, and the period of the Hale's magnetic cycle with a correlation coefficient of r = −0.58. Furthermore, assuming that the sunspot number (SN) is proportional to the square of the toroidal magnetic field (SN ∝ B 2), our solution accurately predict the presence of an harmonic oscillation in the SN data, occurring at a period of T /4 = 5.52 ± 0.44 yr. This prediction has been validated through Lomb–Scargle analysis, with a high statistical significance. Additionally, we find that the ratio of spectral powers between the T/4 harmonic and the main T/2 oscillation is almost equal to the value obtained from our solution using the mean values of the parameters. Interestingly, this study also reveals a correlation between the intermittent 5.52-yr cycle and μ, the parameter associated with the meridional circulation of the Sun. Both follow a similar pattern, suggesting that the origin of the five-year cycle lies within the meridional circulation. Finally, we will see how, using this model, we can overcome the limitations of direct observations and reconstruct the variation profile of the meridional circulation over two centuries using a single observation (from the last magnetic cycle). In this paper, we look to analyse the spiral features of grand-design, multiarmed, and flocculent spiral galaxies using deep optical imaging from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. We explore the resulting distributions of various characteristics of spiral structure beyond the optical radius, such as the distributions of azimuthal angle, the extent of spiral arms, and of the spiral arm widths for the aforementioned galaxy classes. We also compare the measured properties for isolated galaxies and galaxies in groups and clusters. We find that, on average, compared to multiarmed and flocculent spiral galaxies, the spiral arms of grand-design galaxies exhibit slightly larger azimuthal angles, greater extent, and larger widths in the periphery of the galaxy. Furthermore, on average, isolated galaxies tend to have slightly smaller widths of outer spiral arms compared to galaxies in tight environments, which is likely related to the tidally induced mechanism for generating wider outer spiral arms. Models derived in 2009 to fit mid-infrared (8–24 micron) source counts from the IRAS, ISO, and Spitzer missions, provide an excellent fit to deep counts with JWST , demonstrating that the evolution of dusty star-forming galaxies is well understood. The evolution of dust in galaxies at high redshifts is discussed and a simple prescription is proposed to model this. This allows more realistic models for source-counts at submillimetre wavelength. A reasonable fit to 250, 500, 850, and 1100 micron counts is obtained. In this paper we detect double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2) in five open clusters: NGC 2243, NGC 2420, NGC 3532, NGC 6253, and NGC 6705 (M 11) using a method based on high values of the projected rotational velocity when they are fitted with single star spectral model. Observed spectra were obtained from the European Southern Observatory archive. The method was validated on the sets of synthetic spectra for the single and binary stars. It is able to reliably select spectroscopic binaries without confusing them with single stars, if the components in a binary rotate slowly and the radial velocity separation is sufficiently high. We found 60 SB2 candidates: two in NGC 2243, eight each in NGC 2420 and NGC 3532, 17 in NGC 6253, and 25 in NGC 6705. The overlap of galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments presents an ideal opportunity for joint cosmological data set analyses. In this paper we develop a halo model-based method for the first joint analysis combining these two experiments using 10 correlated two-point functions (10 × 2pt) derived from galaxy position, galaxy shear, CMB lensing convergence, and Compton- y fields. We explore this method using the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Simons Observatory (SO) as examples. We find such LSS × CMB joint analyses lead to significant improvement in Figure-of-Merit of Ωm and S 8 over the constraints from using LSS-only probes within Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. We identify that the shear– y and y–y correlations are the most valuable additions when thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dolvich (tSZ) is included. We further identify the dominant sources of halo model uncertainties in the small-scale modelling, and investigate the impact of halo self-calibration due to the inclusion of small-scale tSZ information. The irregular satellites of Jupiter produce dust particles through the impact of interplanetary micrometeoroids. In this paper, the dynamics of these particles is studied by both high-accuracy numerical simulation and analytical theory, in order to learn their transport, final fate, and spatial distribution. The perturbation forces that are considered in our dynamical model include the solar radiation pressure, solar gravity, Poynting–Robertson drag, Jovian oblateness, and the Galilean satellites' gravity. The trajectories of different size particles are simulated until they hit Jupiter, the Galilean satellites, or escape from the Jovian system. The average dynamical lifetimes of dust with different grain sizes are calculated, and the final fate of dust particles is reported and analysed. The steady-state spatial number density of particles is estimated by integrating the trajectories of dust particles over their initial size distribution, and compared to the previous work. The impact sites of dust on Callisto's surface are recorded and provide an important clue for the study of the hemisphere asymmetry of Callisto. Besides, the mass accretion rate, cross-sectional area influx, and mass influx density of dust on Callisto are calculated. A ring outside the orbit of Callisto dominated by dust between 2 and 25 µm from Jupiter's irregular satellites is suggested, with the average normal geometric optical depth of the order of 10−8 and the configuration of the ring ansae similar to Jupiter's gossamer rings. Multiphase galactic outflows, generated by supernova (SN) feedback, are likely to be more metal rich than the interstellar media from which they are driven due to incomplete mixing between SN ejecta and the ambient interstellar medium. This enrichment is important for shaping galactic metallicities and metallicity gradients, but measuring it quantitatively from simulations requires resolution high enough to resolve mass, momentum and energy exchanges between the different phases of the outflows. In this context, we present QED, which are simulations of outflows, driven by SN feedback, conducted using Quokka , a new GPU-optimized adaptive mesh refinement radiation-hydrodynamics code. This code allows us to reach combinations of resolution, simulation volume, and simulation duration larger than those that have previously been possible, and to resolve all gas phases from cold neutral medium, T ∼ 100 K, to hot ionized gas, T ≳ 107 K. In this, a first of a series of papers exploring generation and evolution of multiphase outflows from a wide range of galactic environments and star formation rates, we quantify the extent of selective metal loading in solar neighbourhood-like environments. We explain the selective metal loading, we find as a result of the transport of metals within and between phases, a phenomenon we can study owing to the parsec-scale resolution that our simulations achieve. In this paper, we introduce a novel data augmentation methodology based on Conditional Progressive Generative Adversarial Networks (CPGAN) to generate diverse black hole (BH) images, accounting for variations in spin and electron temperature prescriptions. These generated images are valuable resources for training deep learning algorithms to accurately estimate black hole parameters from observational data. Our model can generate BH images for any spin value within the range of [−1, 1], given an electron temperature distribution. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we employ a convolutional neural network to predict the BH spin using both the GRMHD images and the images generated by our proposed model. Our results demonstrate a significant performance improvement when training is conducted with the augmented data set while testing is performed using GRMHD simulated data, as indicated by the high R 2 score. Consequently, we propose that GANs can be employed as cost-effective models for black hole image generation and reliably augment training data sets for other parametrization algorithms. During substructure formation in magnetized astrophysical plasma, dissipation of magnetic energy facilitated by magnetic reconnection affects the system dynamics by heating and accelerating the ejected plasmoids. Numerical simulations are a crucial tool for investigating such systems. In astrophysical simulations, the energy dissipation, reconnection rate, and substructure formation critically depend on the onset of reconnection of numerical or physical origin. In this paper, we hope to assess the reliability of the state-of-the-art numerical codes, pluto and koral by quantifying and discussing the impact of dimensionality, resolution, and code accuracy on magnetic energy dissipation, reconnection rate, and substructure formation. We quantitatively compare results obtained with relativistic and non-relativistic, resistive and non-resistive, as well as two- and three-dimensional set-ups performing the Orszag–Tang test problem. We find sufficient resolution in each model, for which numerical error is negligible and the resolution does not significantly affect the magnetic energy dissipation and reconnection rate. The non-relativistic simulations show that at sufficient resolution, magnetic and kinetic energies convert to internal energy and heat the plasma. In the relativistic system, energy components undergo mutual conversion during the simulation time, which leads to a substantial increase in magnetic energy at 20 per cent and 90 per cent of the total simulation time of 10 light-crossing times – the magnetic field is amplified by a factor of 5 due to relativistic shocks. We also show that the reconnection rate in all our simulations is higher than 0.1, indicating plasmoid-mediated regime. This document is a correction to a previous article titled "Comparing emission- and absorption-based gas-phase metallicities in GRB host galaxies at z = 2−4 using JWST." The correction addresses two errors in the original paper. Firstly, the redshift of the host galaxy of GRB 090323 was mistakenly reported as z = 4.7, when it is actually at redshift z = 3.58. Secondly, there was a bug in the code that produced the surface brightness maps of the host galaxies of GRB 050820A and GRB 150403A, causing the labelled physical pixel scale to be too small. Supernovae (SNe) explosions are thought to be an important source of dust in galaxies. At the same time strong shocks from SNe are known as an efficient mechanism of dust destruction via thermal and kinetic sputtering. A critically important question of how these two hypotheses of SNe activity control the dust budget in galaxies is still not quite clearly understood. In this paper, we address this question within 3D multifluid hydrodynamical simulations, treating separately the SNe injected dust and the dust pre-existed in ambient interstellar gas. We focus primarily on how the injected and the pre-existing dust is destroyed by shock waves and hot gas in the SN bubble depending on the density of ambient gas. Within our model, we estimate an upper limit of the SN-produced dust mass which can be supplied into interstellar medium. For an SN progenitor mass of 30 M⊙ and the ejected dust mass M d = 1 M⊙, we constrain the dust mass that can be delivered into the ISM as ≥0.13 M⊙, provided that the SN has injected large dust particles with a ≥ 0.1 µm. The fraction of ionizing photons that escape their host galaxies to ionize hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is a critical parameter in analyses of the reionization era. In this paper, we use the meraxes semi-analytic galaxy formation model to infer the mean ionizing photon escape fraction and its dependence on galaxy properties through joint modelling of the observed high redshift galaxy population and existing constraints on the reionization history. Using a Bayesian framework, and under the assumption that escape fraction is primarily related to halo mass, we find that the joint constraints of the ultraviolet luminosity function, cosmic microwave background optical depth, and the Ly α forest require an escape fraction of |$(18\pm 5)$| per cent for galaxies within haloes of M ≲ 109 M⊙ and |$(5\pm 2)$| per cent for more massive haloes. In terms of galaxy properties, this transition in escape fraction occurs at stellar masses of M ⋆ ∼ 107 M⊙, nearly independent of redshift. As a function of redshift, reionization is dominated by the smaller M ⋆ ≲ 107 M⊙ galaxies with high escape fractions at z ≳ 6 and by the larger M ⋆ ≳ 107 M⊙ galaxies with lower escape fractions at z ≲ 6. Galaxies with star formation rates of 10−2.5 M⊙yr−1 to 10−1.5 M⊙yr−1 provide the dominant source of ionizing photons throughout reionization. Our results are consistent with recent direct measurements of a |$\sim 5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| escape fraction from massive galaxies at the end of reionization and support the picture of low mass galaxies being the dominant sources of ionizing photons during reionization. In this paper, we analyse the metallicity structure of the Magellanic Clouds using parameters derived from the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) low-resolution XP (for Blue/Red Photometer) spectra, astrometry, and photometry. We find that the qualitative behaviour of the radial metallicity gradients in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is quite similar, with both of them having a metallicity plateau at intermediate radii and a second at larger radii. The LMC has a first metallicity plateau at [M/H] ≈ −0.8 for 3–7°, while the SMC has one at [M/H] ≈ −1.1 for 3–5°. The outer LMC periphery has a fairly constant metallicity of [M/H] ≈ −1.0 (10–18°), while the outer SMC periphery has a value of [M/H] ≈ −1.3 (6–10°). The sharp drop in metallicity in the LMC at ∼8° and the marked difference in age distributions in these two regions suggest that there were two important evolutionary phases in the LMC. In addition, we find that the Magellanic periphery substructures, likely Magellanic debris, are mostly dominated by LMC material stripped off in old interactions with the SMC. This presents a new picture in contrast with the popular belief that the debris around the clouds had been mostly stripped off from the SMC due to having a lower mass. In this work, we extend the non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) solver in the moving-mesh code arepo to include the Hall effect. The core of our algorithm is based on an estimation of the magnetic field gradients by a least-squares reconstruction on the unstructured mesh, which we also used in the companion paper for Ohmic and ambipolar diffusion. In an extensive study of simulations of a magnetic shock, we show that without additional magnetic diffusion our algorithm for the Hall effect becomes unstable at high resolution. We can however stabilize it by artificially increasing the Ohmic resistivity, ηOR, so that it satisfies the condition ηOR ≥ ηH/5, where ηH is the Hall diffusion coefficient. Adopting this solution, we find second-order convergence for the C-shock and are also able to accurately reproduce the dispersion relation of the whistler waves. As a first application of the new scheme, we simulate the collapse of a magnetized cloud with constant Hall parameter ηH and show that, depending on the sign of ηH, the magnetic braking can either be weakened or strengthened by the Hall effect. The quasi-Lagrangian nature of the moving-mesh method used here automatically increases the resolution in the forming core, making it well suited for more realistic studies with non-constant magnetic diffusivities in the future. Recent attempts at measuring the variation of c using an assortment of standard candles and the redshift-dependent Hubble expansion rate inferred from the currently available catalogue of cosmic chronometers have tended to show that the speed of light appears to be constant, at least up to z ∼ 2. A notable exception is the use of high-redshift ultraviolet + X-ray quasars, whose Hubble diagram seems to indicate an ∼2.7σ deviation of c from its value c 0 (≡ 2.99792458 × 1010 cm s−1) on Earth. We show in this paper, however, that this anomaly is due to an error in the derived relation between the luminosity distance, D L, and H (z) when c is allowed to vary with redshift, and an imprecise calibration of the quasar catalogue. When these deficiencies are addressed correctly, one finds that c / c 0 = 0.95 ± 0.14 in the redshift range 0 ≲ z ≲ 2, fully consistent with zero variation within the measurement errors. The Hubble constant (H 0) is a crucial parameter in cosmology. Different cosmic observations have resulted in varying estimates results for H 0, that is the well-known H 0 tension. To address this issue, it is beneficial to use other data set to constrain H 0. In this paper, via the cosmographic approach based on the Friedman–Lemaitre–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) metric to the dispersion measure (DM) of the intergalactic medium DMIGM(z) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), we obtain the Taylor expansion of 〈DMIGM(z)〉 in terms of redshift z. Utilizing the uncalibrated type Ia supernaove (SNe Ia) and 18 localized FRBs, we give the cosmological constraints, |$H_0=65.5^{+6.4}_{-5.4}$| km s−1 Mpc−1 (68 per cent CL), cosmological deceleration parameter q 0 = −0.50 ± 0.20 and the jerk parameter |$j_0=-0.1^{+2.0}_{-2.5}$|⁠. To demonstrate the impact of parameter degeneracies on our analysis methods, we compare the results using three different forms of f IGM(z) and two different prior distributions of Ωb, 0. After that, we find that the uncertainty in H 0 is not significantly affected by the width of the prior interval of f IGM(z) and Ωb, 0, but the mean value is influenced by the priors for f IGM(z) and Ωb, 0 due to parameter degeneracies with H 0. Employing f IGM(z) that evolves with redshift, we obtain |$H_0=69.0^{+6.7}_{-5.7}$| km s−1 Mpc−1. In addition, the mock analyses provide a posterior estimation of H 0 with an accuracy of 4.6 per cent and higher precision for q 0 and j 0 in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the 'Cosmological Jellyfish' project – a citizen-science classification program to identify jellyfish (JF) galaxies within the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations. JF are satellite galaxies that exhibit long trailing gas features – 'tails' – extending from their stellar body. Their distinctive morphology arises due to ram-pressure stripping (RPS) as they move through the background gaseous medium. Using the TNG50 and TNG100 simulations, we construct a sample of |$\sim 80\, 000$| satellite galaxies spanning an unprecedented range of stellar masses, |$10^{8.3}{-}10^{12.3}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , and host masses, |$M_\mathrm{200,c}=10^{10.4}{-}10^{14.6}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$| back to z  = 2. Based on this sample, |$\sim 90\, 000$| galaxy images were presented to volunteers in the citizen-science Zooniverse platform, who were asked to determine whether the galaxy image resembles a JF. Based on volunteer votes, each galaxy received a score determining if it is a JF or not. This paper describes the project, the inspected satellite sample, the methodology, and the classification process that resulted in a data set of 5307 visually identified JF galaxies. We find that JF is common in nearly all group- and cluster-sized systems, with the JF fraction increasing with host mass and decreasing with satellite stellar mass. We highlight JF galaxies in three relatively unexplored regimes: low-mass hosts of |$M_\mathrm{200,c}\sim 10^{11.5}{-}10^{13}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , radial positions within hosts exceeding the virial radius R 200, c, and at high redshift up to z  = 2. We present fitcov an approach for accurate estimation of the covariance of two-point correlation functions that requires fewer mocks than the standard mock-based covariance. This can be achieved by dividing a set of mocks into jackknife regions and fitting the correction term first introduced in Mohammad & Percival (2022), such that the mean of the jackknife covariances corresponds to the one from the mocks. This extends the model beyond the shot-noise limited regime, allowing it to be used for denser samples of galaxies. We test the performance of our fitted jackknife approach, both in terms of accuracy and precision, using lognormal mocks with varying densities and approximate EZmocks mimicking the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument LRG and ELG samples in the redshift range of z  = [0.8, 1.1]. We find that the Mohammad–Percival correction produces a bias in the two-point correlation function covariance matrix that grows with number density and that our fitted jackknife approach does not. We also study the effect of the covariance on the uncertainty of cosmological parameters by performing a full-shape analysis. We demonstrate that our fitted jackknife approach based on 25 mocks can recover unbiased and as precise cosmological parameters as the ones obtained from a covariance matrix based on 1000 or 1500 mocks, while the Mohammad–Percival correction produces uncertainties that are twice as large. The number of mocks required to obtain an accurate estimation of the covariance for the two-point correlation function is therefore reduced by a factor of 40–60. This paper presents the third data release of the INvestigating Stellar Population In RElics (INSPIRE) project, comprising 52 ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph. We measure integrated stellar velocity dispersion, [Mg/Fe] abundances, ages, and metallicities for all the INSPIRE objects. We thus infer star formation histories and confirm the existence of a degree of relicness (DoR), defined in terms of the fraction of stellar mass formed by z  = 2, the time at which a galaxy has assembled 75 per cent of its mass, and the final assembly time. Objects with a high DoR assembled their stellar mass at early epochs, while low-DoR objects show a non-negligible fraction of later formed populations and hence a spread in ages and metallicities. A higher DoR correlates with larger [Mg/Fe], supersolar metallicity, and larger velocity dispersion values. The 52 UMCGs span a large range of DoR from 0.83 to 0.06, with 38 of them having formed more than 75  per cent of their mass by z  = 2. Of these, nine are extreme relics (DoR>0.7), since they formed the totality (⁠|$\gt 99~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of their stellar mass by redshift z  = 2. The remaining 14 UCMGs cannot be considered relics, as they are characterized by more extended star formation histories. With INSPIRE  we built the first sizeable sample of relics outside the local Universe, up to z ∼ 0.4, increasing the number of confirmed relics by a factor of >10, and opening up an important window to explain the mass assembly of massive galaxies in the high- z Universe. This paper presents a new approach to determining the dimensions of particles that can be lifted to a coma by the sublimation flux of water ice. Due to the diverse colour of the cometary surfaces, in the presented calculations we take into account the influence of the reflectance coefficient (hemispherical albedo) on the size of particles lifted from the surface of the nucleus. A Cary 5000 spectrometer was used to measure hemispherical albedo. Spectroscopic measurements used dust particles that consisted of pure silicate or were a mixture of pure silicate and organic compounds such as charcoal, soot, and ash. In addition, these admixtures acted as a means of darkening the tested sample. Depending on the colour of the sample and the wavelength, the measured value of hemispherical albedo oscillated in the range from 4.93 per cent to 48.65 per cent. A thermodynamic model of cometary matter emission was developed based on the results of hemispherical albedo measurements. The performed numerical simulations show that the temperature decreases with the increase of the hemispherical albedo, which translates into the sublimation flux and the dynamics of the dust-ice particles present on the surface of the cometary nucleus. Taking into account the extreme values of the hemispherical albedo, the differences in the size of particles carried away from the surface of the nucleus are in the order of centimeters. This paper presents a comprehensive X-ray and multiwavelength study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in NGC 1566 using archival Chandra, Swift/XRT, JWST , and HST observations. The main results are, first, from the hardness ratio diagram, where spectral state transitions from hard to soft as seen in typical Galactic high-mass X-ray binaries for ULX-3 were observed. Secondly, a new transient ULX candidate (ULX-4) was identified, reaching a peak luminosity of ∼1040 erg s−1. Thirdly, the optical and NIR (near-infrared) counterparts of the ULXs were searched from the precise astrometric calculations. For ULX-1 and ULX-2, evidence was found that the observed NIR emission is due to the circumbinary disc/dust disrupted by X-rays. Lastly, the optical observations suggest that the possible donor star of ULX-3 is a B-type supergiant. The tidal acceleration experienced by an object at the event horizon of a black hole decreases as one over the square of the black hole's mass. As such there is a maximum mass at which a black hole can tidally disrupt an object outside of its event horizon and potentially produce observable emission. This maximum mass is known as the 'Hills mass', and in full general relativity is a function of both the black hole's spin a • and the inclination angle of the incoming object's orbit with respect to the black hole's spin axis ψ. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Hills mass can be represented by a simple analytical function of a • and ψ, the first general solution of this problem. This general solution is found by utilizing the symmetries of a class of critical Kerr metric orbits known as the innermost bound spherical orbits. Interestingly, at fixed black hole spin the maximum Hills mass can lie at incoming orbital inclinations outside of the black hole's equatorial plane ψ ≠ π/2. When compared to previous results in the literature this effect can lead to an increase in the maximum Hills mass (at fixed spin) by as much as a factor of |$\sqrt{11/5} \simeq 1.48$| for a maximally rotating black hole. We then demonstrate how Bayesian inference, coupled with an estimate of the mass of a black hole in a tidal disruption event, can be used to place conservative constraints on that black hole's spin. We analyse the XMM – Newton RGS spectra of Wolf–Rayet (WR) 140, an archetype long-period eccentric WR+O colliding wind binary. We evaluate the spectra of O and Fe emission lines and find that the plasmas emitting these lines have the largest approaching velocities with the largest velocity dispersions between phases 0.935 and 0.968 where the inferior conjunction of the O star occurs. This behaviour is the same as that of the Ne line-emission plasma presented in our previous paper. We perform a diagnosis of the electron number density n e using the He-like triplet lines of O and Ne-like Fe–L lines. The former results in a conservative upper limit of n e ≲ 1010–1012 cm−3 on the O line-emission site, while the latter cannot impose any constraint on the Fe line-emission site because of statistical limitations. We calculate the line-of-sight velocity and its dispersion separately along the shock cone. By comparing the observed and calculated line-of-sight velocities, we update the distance of the Ne line-emission site from the stagnation point. By assuming radiative cooling of the Ne line-emission plasma using the observed temperature and the local stellar wind density, we estimate that the line-emission site extends along the shock cone by at most ±58 per cent (phase 0.816) of the distance from the stagnation point. In this framework, the excess of the observed velocity dispersion over that calculated is ascribed to turbulence in the hot-shocked plasma at earlier orbital phases of 0.816, 0.912, and 0.935, with the largest velocity dispersion of 340-630 km s−1 at phase 0.912. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow light curves and spectra provide information about the density of the environment, the energy of the explosion, the properties of the particle acceleration process, and the structure of the decelerating jet. Due to the large number of parameters involved, the model can present a certain degree of parameter degeneracy. In this paper, we generated synthetic photometric data points using a standard GRB afterglow model and fit them using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. This method has emerged as the preferred approach for analysing and interpreting data in astronomy. We show that, depending on the choice of priors, the parameter degeneracy can go unnoticed by the MCMC method. Furthermore, we apply the MCMC method to analyse the GRB 170817A afterglow. We find that there is a complete degeneracy between the energy of the explosion E , the density of the environment n , and the microphysical parameters describing the particle acceleration process (e.g. ϵ e and ϵ B ), which cannot be determined by the afterglow light curve alone. Our results emphasize the importance of gaining a deep understanding of the degeneracy properties which can be present in GRB afterglows models, as well as the limitations of the MCMC method. In the case of GRB 170817, we get the following values for the physical parameters: E  = 8 × 1050–1 × 1053 erg, n  = 7 × 10−5–9 × 10−3, ϵ e  = 10−3–0.3, ϵ B  = 10−10–0.3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detecting the cosmic 21 cm signal from epoch of reionization has always been a difficult task. Although the Galactic foreground can be regarded as a smooth power-law spectrum, due to the chromaticity of the antenna, additional structure will be introduced into the global spectrum, making the polynomial fitting algorithm perform poorly. In this paper, we introduce an improved polynomial fitting algorithm – the Vari-Zeroth-Order Polynomial (VZOP) fitting and use it to fit the simulation data. This algorithm is developed for the upcoming low-frequency anechoic chamber experiment, yet it is a general method suitable for application in any single antenna-based global 21 cm signal experiment. VZOP defines a 24-h averaged beam model that brings information about the antenna beam into the polynomial model. Assuming that the beam can be measured, VZOP can successfully recover the 21 cm absorption feature, even if the beam is extremely frequency-dependent. In real observations, due to various systematics, the corrected measured beam contains residual errors that are not completely random. Assuming the errors are frequency-dependent, VZOP is capable of recovering the 21 cm absorption feature even when the error reaches 10 per cent. Even in the most extreme scenario where the errors are completely random, VZOP can at least give a fitting result that is not worse than the common polynomial fitting. In conclusion, the fitting effect of VZOP depends on the structure of the error and the accuracy of the beam measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jellyfish galaxies are promising laboratories for studying radiative cooling and magnetic fields in multiphase gas flows. Their long, dense tails are observed to be magnetized, and they extend up to 100 kpc into the intracluster medium (ICM), suggesting that their gas is thermally unstable so that the cold gas mass grows with time rather than being fully dissolved in the hot wind as a result of hydrodynamical interface instabilities. In this paper, we use the arepo code to perform magnetohydrodynamical windtunnel simulations of a jellyfish galaxy experiencing ram-pressure stripping by interacting with an ICM wind. The ICM density, temperature and velocity that the galaxy encounters are time-dependent and comparable to what a real jellyfish galaxy experiences while orbiting the ICM. In simulations with a turbulent magnetized wind, we reproduce observations, which show that the magnetic field is aligned with the jellyfish tails. During the galaxy infall into the cluster with a near edge-on geometry, the gas flow in the tail is fountain-like, implying preferential stripping of gas where the rotational velocity vectors add up with the ram pressure while fall-back occurs in the opposite case. Hence, the tail velocity shows a memory of the rotation pattern of the disc. At the time of the nearest cluster passage, ram-pressure stripping is so strong that the fountain flow is destroyed and instead the tail is dominated by the removal of gas. Extreme debris discs can show short-term behaviour through the evolution and clearing of small grains produced in giant impacts, and potentially a longer period of variability caused by a planetesimal population formed from giant impact ejecta. In this paper, we present results of numerical simulations to explain how a planetesimal populated disc can supply an observed extreme debris disc with small grains. We simulated a sample of giant impacts from which we form a planetesimal population. We then use the N -body code rebound to evolve the planetesimals spatially and collisionally. We adopt a simplistic collision criteria in which we define destructive collisions to be between planetesimals with a mutual impact velocity that exceeds two times the catastrophic disruption threshold, V *. We find that for some configurations, a planetesimal populated disc can produce a substantial amount of dust to sustain an observable disc. The semimajor axis at which the giant impact occurs changes the mass added to the observed disc substantially, while the orientation of the impact has less of an effect. We determine how the collision rate at the collision point changes over time and show that changes in semimajor axis and orientation only change the initial collision rate of the disc. Black widows (BWs) are a type of eclipsing millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with low companion masses (⁠|$\lesssim 0.05\, \rm M_\odot$|⁠) and tight orbits (<1 d). PSR J1953+1844 (i.e. M71E) is a black window (BW) with the shortest orbital period (∼53 min) ever discovered, which was recently detected by Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. Its companion mass is |$\sim 0.01\, \rm M_\odot$| according to its mass function, indicating that the companion may be a hydrogen-deficient star. However, the origin of PSR J1953+1844 is highly unclear. In this paper, we explored the origin of PSR J1953+1844 through the neutron star+He star channel, in which the system can experience ultracompact X-ray binary phase. We found that the He star donor channel can reproduce the characteristics of PSR J1953+1844, indicating that this work provides an alternative formation channel for this source. Meanwhile, the minimum orbital period of BWs formed by this channel is ∼28 min, corresponding to the companion mass of |$0.058\, \rm M_\odot$|⁠. In addition, we note that even though PSR J1953+1844 has a short orbital period, it cannot be detected by the gravitational wave (GW) observatories like Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, TaiJi, and TianQin. However, we still expect that the BWs with extremely tight orbit produced by this channel are the potential sources of future space-based GW observatories. The current properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in the nearby Universe are a consequence of an evolutionary history ruled by accretion and disruption processes. The analysis of scaling relations for GCSs is crucial for understanding the relevance of different physical processes involved in their origin and subsequent survival. In this work, radial profiles are calculated for a sample of GCSs associated with nearby massive galaxies. This is supplemented with results from our previous papers, achieving a total sample of 53 GCSs with radial profiles homogeneously calculated, and spanning more than two orders of magnitude in stellar mass of the host galaxy. Scaling relations involving different parameters of the GCSs are obtained for the entire sample, and their significance in terms of different scenarios is considered. Precursors have been observed seconds to minutes before some short gamma-ray bursts. While the precursor origins remain unknown, one explanation relies on the resonance of neutron star pulsational modes with the tidal forces during the inspiral phase of a compact binary merger. In this paper, we present a model for short gamma-ray burst precursors that relies on tidally resonant neutron star oceans. In this scenario, the onset of tidal resonance in the crust–ocean interface mode ignites the precursor flare, possibly through the interaction between the excited neutron star ocean and the surface magnetic fields. From just the precursor total energy, the time before the main event, and a detected quasi-periodic oscillation frequency, we may constrain the binary parameters and neutron star ocean properties. Our model can immediately distinguish neutron star–black hole mergers from binary neutron star mergers without gravitational wave detection. We apply our model to GRB 211211A, the recently detected long duration short gamma-ray burst with a quasi-periodic precursor, and explore the parameters of this system. The precursor of GRB 211211A is consistent with a tidally resonant neutron star ocean explanation that requires an extreme mass ratio neutron star–black hole merger and a high-mass neutron star. While difficult to reconcile with the main gamma-ray burst and associated kilonova, our results constrain the possible precursor mechanisms in this system. A systematic study of short gamma-ray burst precursors with the model presented here can test precursor origin and probe the possible connection between gamma-ray bursts and neutron star–black hole mergers.
