We report on the discovery of Swift J011511.0-725611, a rare Be X-ray binary system (BeXRB) with a White Dwarf (WD) compact object, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by S-CUBED, a weekly X-ray/UV survey of the SMC by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Observations show an approximately 3 month outburst from Swift J011511.0-725611, the first detected by S-CUBED since it began in 2016 June. Swift J011511.0-725611 shows super-soft X-ray emission, indicative of a White Dwarf compact object, which is further strengthened by the presence of an 0.871 keV edge, commonly attributed to O viii K-edge in the WD atmosphere. Spectroscopy by SALT confirms the Be nature of the companion star, and long term light-curve by OGLE finds both the signature of a circumstellar disk in the system at outburst time, and the presence of a 17.4 day periodicity, likely the orbital period of the system. Swift J011511.0-725611 is suggested to be undergoing a Type-II outburst, similar to the previously reported SMC Be White Dwarf binary (BeWD), Swift J004427.3-734801. It is likely that the rarity of known BeWD is in part due to the difficulty in detecting such outbursts due to both their rarity, and their relative faintness compared to outbursts in Neutron Star BeXRBs., 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We revisit the subject of Be star candidates towards the Magellanic Clouds, previously studied by the authors using SPM4 proper motions. We obtain GAIA DR2 parallaxes and proper motions for 2357 and 994 LMC and SMC Be candidates, respectively. Parallaxes and proper motions vs. color V-I easily reveal the presence of the redder galactic contaminant foreground, as concluded in our previous work, but this time we do find a few red Be stars candidates consistent with being true Magellanic objects. A membership assessment to each Magellanic Cloud is done for each Be candidate, based on the distribution of their parallaxes and proper motions. From a compilation of published catalogues of spectroscopically confirmed Be stars, we found that 40 (LMC) and 64 (SMC) of these Be candidates, are in fact Be stars. Near infrared IRSF JHKs magnitudes were obtained for about 70% the Be stars candidates with GAIA DR2 astrometric data. Mid-infrared SAGE IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 $\mu$m magnitudes were obtained for about 85% as well. 6 LMC and 7 SMC confirmed Be stars show optical, near- or mid-infrared colours redder than what has been typically measured for Classical Be stars. Swift J004929.5-733107 is an X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) that has been reported several times, but the optical counterpart has been unclear due to source confusion in a crowded region of the SMC. Previous works proposed [MA93] 302 as the counterpart, however we show here, using data obtained from the S-CUBED project, that the X-ray positio is inconsistent with that object. Instead we propose a previously unclassified object which has all the indications of being a newly identified Be star exhibiting strong HU emission. Evidence for the presence of significant I-band variability strongly suggest that this is, in fact, a Be type star with a large circumstellar disk. Over 18 years worth of optical monitoring by the OGLE project reveal a periodic modulation at a period of 413d, probably the binary period of the system. A SALT optical spectrum shows strong Balmer emission and supports a proposed spectral classification of B1-3 III-IVe. The X-ray data obtained from the S-CUBED project reveal a time-averaged spectrum well fitted by a photon index = 0.93 pm 0.16. Assuming the known distance to the SMC the flux corresponds to a luminosity 10E35 erg/s. All of these observational facts suggest that this is confirmed as a Be star-neutron star X-ray binary (BeXRB) in the SMC, albeit one with an unusually long binary period at the limits of the Corbet Diagram., 9 pages 12 figures

The SDSS-DR16 Quasar Superset and pipeline catalogues are searched for undeclared quasars which were concealed by or confused with other objects, usually due to incomplete deblending. Forty such quasars with redshifts are found and herewith presented. Also, 82 entries in the SDSS-DR16Q main quasar catalogue are shown to be non-quasars, some also due to incomplete deblending, especially "line poachers". Other non-quasars are shown to be star spikes or moving stars or other types, and 7 new quasars are identified from analysis of "unplugged" spectra. These numbers are tiny compared with the millions of DR16 spectra, but highlight some heretofore overlooked systematics. A study on the photosphere and disc of the Be star β Psc is presented. We recover almost 40 yr of high-resolution spectroscopic observations and additional data gathered from the BeSS data base. We evaluate the photospheric parameters from the spectral energy distribution (SED) and fittings of state-of-the-art non-LTE model atmospheres to observed helium, carbon, silicon, and magnesium line profiles. Our models include the stellar geometric deformation as well as the co-latitude dependence of temperature and gravity, aiming to derive the effects of rotation on the stellar parameters. We estimate the circumstellar disc parameters from the fitting of models assuming different disc properties, namely its radius and gas density profile. The disc inclination angle i is constrained from the fittings of He i 4471 Å, Mg ii 4481 Å, C ii 4267 Å, and Si ii 4128, 4132 Å lines with gravity darkened models. Our findings, based on model fittings, suggest that during the last 40 yr, the disc radius changed within the interval 5.5 ≤ Rd ≤ 7.8 $R/R_{*}\,$, the disc base gas density within 5 × 10−13 ≤ ρ ≤ 1 × 10−12 g cm−3, while the radial power-law density index m assumed values between 2.0 and 2.3. We explore the hypothesis that B type emission-line stars (Be stars) have their origin in mass-transfer binaries by measuring the fraction of runaway Be stars. We assemble the largest-to-date catalogue of 632 Be stars with 6D kinematics, exploiting the precise astrometry of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) from the first Gaia Data Release. Using binary stellar evolution simulations, we make predictions for the runaway and equatorial rotation velocities of a runaway Be star population. Accounting for observational biases, we calculate that if all classical Be stars originated through mass transfer in binaries, then $17.5\%$ of the Be stars in our catalogue should be runaways. The remaining $82.5\%$ should be in binaries with subdwarfs, white dwarfs or neutron stars, because those systems either remained bound post-supernova or avoided the supernova entirely. Using a Bayesian methodology, we compare the hypothesis that each Be star in our catalogue is a runaway to the null hypothesis that it is a member of the Milky Way disc. We find that $13.1^{+2.6}_{-2.4}\%$ of the Be stars in our catalogue are runaways, and identify a subset of 40 high-probability runaways. We argue that deficiencies in our understanding of binary stellar evolution, as well as the degeneracy between velocity dispersion and number of runaway stars, can explain the slightly lower runaway fraction. We thus conclude that all Be stars could be explained by an origin in mass-transfer binaries. This conclusion is testable with the second Gaia data release (DR2)., 19 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. The Be phenomenon is present in about 20$\%$ of the B-type stars. Be stars show variability on a broad range of timescales, which in most cases is related to the presence of a circumstellar disk of variable size and structure. For this reason a time resolved survey is highly desirable in order to understand the mechanisms of disk formation which are still poorly understood. In addition, a complete observational sample would improve the statistical significance of the study of the stellar and disk parameters. The "Be Stars Observation Survey" (BeSOS) is a survey containing reduced spectra obtained using the echelle spectrograph PUCHEROS with a spectral resolution of 17000 in the range of 4260-7300 $\text{\AA}$. BeSOS's main objective is to offer consistent spectroscopic and time resolved data obtained with one instrument. The user can download or plot the data and get the stellar parameters directly from the website. We also provide a star-by-star analysis based on photometric, spectroscopic and interferometric data as well as general information about the whole BeSOS sample. Recently, BeSOS led to the discovery of a new Be star HD 42167 and facilitated study of the V/R variation of HD 35165 and HD 120324, the steady disk of HD 110335 and the Be shell status of HD 127972. We use a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code to examine the effects of misaligned binary companions on Be star discs. We systematically vary the degree of misalignment between the disc and the binary orbit, as well as the disc viscosity and orbital period to study their effects on the density in the inner and outer parts of the disc. We find that varying the degree of misalignment, the viscosity, and the orbital period affects both the truncation radius and the density structure of the outer disc, while the inner disc remains mostly unaffected. We also investigate the tilting of the disc in the innermost part of the disc and find the tilt increases with radius until reaching a maximum around 5 stellar radii. The direction of the line of nodes, with respect to the equator of the central star, is found to be offset compared to the orbital line of nodes, and to vary periodically in time, with a period of half a orbital phase. We also compare the scale height of our discs with the analytical scale height of an isothermal disc, which increases with radius as $r^{1.5}$. We find that this formula reproduces the scale height well for both aligned and misaligned systems but underestimates the scale height in regions of the disc where density enhancements develop., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, to be published in MNRAS

The radio and gamma-ray pulsar PSR J2032+4127 was recently found to be in a decades-long orbit with the Be star MT91 213, with the pulsar moving rapidly towards periastron. This binary shares many similar characteristics with the previously unique binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883. Here, we describe radio, X-ray, and optical monitoring of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213. Our extended orbital phase coverage in radio, supplemented with Fermi gamma-ray data, allows us to update and refine the orbital period to 45-50 yr and time of periastron passage to 2017 November. We analyse archival and recent Chandra and Swift observations and show that PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213 is now brighter in X-rays by a factor of ~70 since 2002 and ~20 since 2010. While the pulsar is still far from periastron, this increase in X-rays is possibly due to collisions between pulsar and Be star winds. Optical observations of the Halpha emission line of the Be star suggest that the size of its circumstellar disc may be varying by ~2 over timescales as short as 1-2 months. There are over 100 Be stars that are known to have neutron star companions but only one such system with a black hole. Previous theoretical work suggests this is not due to their formation but due to differences in X-ray luminosity. It has also been proposed that the truncation of the Be star's circumstellar disc is dependent on the mass of the compact object. Hence, Be star discs in black hole binaries are smaller. Since accretion onto the compact object from the Be star's disc is what powers the X-ray luminosity, a smaller disc in black hole systems leads to a lower luminosity. In this paper, simulations are performed with a range of eccentricities and compact object mass. The disc's size and density are shown to be dependent on both quantities. Mass capture and, in turn, X-ray luminosity are heavily dependent on the size and density of the disc. Be/black hole binaries are expected to be up to ~10 times fainter than Be/neutron star binaries when both systems have the same eccentricity and can be 100 times fainter when comparing systems with different eccentricity., 8 pages, 8 figures

We report on the discovery of X-ray pulsations in the Be/X-ray binary IGR J21343+4738 during an XMM-Newton observation. We obtained a barycentric corrected pulse period of 320.35+-0.06 seconds. The pulse profile displays a peak at low energy that flattens at high energy. The pulse fraction is 45+-3$% and independent of energy within the statistical uncertainties. The 0.2-12 keV spectrum is well fit by a two component model consisting of a blackbody with kT=0.11+-0.01 keV and a power law with photon index Gamma=1.02+-0.07. Both components are affected by photoelectric absorption with a equivalent hydrogen column density NH=(1.08+-0.15)x 10^{22} cm^{-2} The observed unabsorbed flux is 1.4x10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.2-12 keV energy band. Despite the fact that the Be star's circumstellar disc has almost vanished, accretion continues to be the main source of high energy radiation. We argue that the observed X-ray luminosity (LX~10^{35} erg s^{-1}) may result from accretion via a low-velocity equatorial wind from the optical companion., 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. The interstellar medium in the region of a family of cometary globules including the reflection nebula GM 2-39 has been analyzed basing on our observations with the slit spectrograph, the results of our previous observations with a Fabry-Perot interferometer in the H-alpha line, Spitzer archival data together with CO microwave data. The structure of globules' IR emission, velocity field of ionized gas in the H-alpha line and of molecular gas in the CO line have been considered. We have detected a CO cavern around the eastern globules and faint high-velocity H-alpha features of surrounding gas. The most probable sources of ionizing radiation and wind of the Cyg OB1 association responsible for the globules' formation are proposed. Based on our multicolour photometry, it has been found that the brightest compact source in the southern 'head' of the cometary globule - the star HBHA 3703-01 (IRAS 20153+3850) - is a B(5-6)V star with E(B-V)=1.18 mag. The strong and broad H-alpha emission line was revealed in its spectrum. The spectral energy distribution of HBHA 3703-01 in the 0.44-24 micron range has been modeled. It is shown that the star has a hot dust envelope with T(dust)=1400 K and tau(V)=1.1. Besides, the star HBHA 3703-01 illuminates the encompassing diffuse nebula GM 2-39 with a diameter of about 30 arcsec. We have carried out a comprehensive study of the molecular conditions and star-forming activities in dark cloud L1174 with multi-wavelength data. Mapping observations of L1174 in $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ and $^{12}$CO $J=3-2$ were performed using the KOSMA 3-meter telescope. Six molecular cores with masses ranging from 5 to 31 $M_\odot$ and sizes ranging from 0.17 to 0.39 pc are resolved. Large area ahead of a Herbig Be star, HD 200775, is in expanding and core 1 is with collapse signature. Large line widths of $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ indicate the ubiquity of turbulent motions in this region. Spectra of $^{12}$CO $J=3-2$ prevalently show conspicuously asymmetric double-peaked profiles. In a large area, red-skewed profiles are detected and suggestive of a scenario of global expansion. There is a large cavity around the Herbig Be star HD 200775, the brightest star in L1174. The gas around the cavity has been severely compressed by the stellar winds from HD 200775. Feedbacks from HD 200775 may have helped form the molecular cores around the cavity. Seventeen 2MASS potential young stellar objects were identified according to their 2MASS colour indices. The spatial distribution of the these 2MASS sources indicates that some of them have a triggered origin. All these suggest that feedbacks from a Herbig Ae/Be star may also have the potential to trigger star forming activities., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

One hundred and twenty-five new high-precision spectropolarimetric observations have been obtained with ESPaDOnS (Eschelle Spectro-Polarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars) at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope and Narval at Telescope Bernard Lyot to investigate the magnetic properties of the classical Be star ω Ori. No Stokes V signatures are detected in our polarimetric data. Measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field, with a median error bar of 30 G, and direct modelling of the mean least-squares deconvolved Stokes V profiles yield no evidence for a dipole magnetic field with polar surface strength greater than ∼80 G. We are therefore unable to confirm the presence of the magnetic field previously reported by Neiner et al. However, our spectroscopic data reveal the presence of periodic emission variability in H and He lines analogous to that reported by Neiner et al., considered as evidence of magnetically confined circumstellar plasma clouds. We revisit this hypothesis in light of the new magnetic analysis. Calculation of the magnetospheric Kepler radius RK and confinement parameter η* indicates that a surface dipole magnetic field with a polar strength larger than 63 G is sufficient to form of a centrifugally supported magnetosphere around ω Ori. Our data are not sufficiently sensitive to detect fields of this magnitude; we are therefore unable to confirm or falsify the magnetic cloud hypothesis. Based on our results, we examine three possible scenarios that could potentially explain the behaviour of ω Ori: (1) that no significant magnetic field is (or was) present in ω Ori, and that the observed phenomena have their origin in another mechanism or mechanisms than corotating clouds. We are, however, unable to identify one; (2) that ω Ori hosts an intermittent magnetic field produced by dynamo processes; however, no such process has been found so far to work in massive stars and especially to produce a dipolar field; and (3) that ω Ori hosts a stable, organized (fossil) magnetic field that is responsible for the observed phenomena, but with a strength that is below our current detection threshold. Of these three scenarios, we consider the second one (dynamo process) as highly unlikely, whereas the other two should be falsifiable with intense monitoring.

The gamma-ray binary system PSR B1259−63/LS 2883 consists of a 48 ms pulsar orbiting a Be star. The system is particularly interesting because it is the only gamma-ray binary system where the nature of the compact object is known. The non-thermal radiation from the system is powered by the spin-down luminosity of the pulsar and the unpulsed radiation originates from the stand-off shock front which forms between the pulsar and stellar wind. The Be star/optical companion in the system produces an excess infrared (IR) flux from the associated circumstellar disc. This IR excess provides an additional photon source for inverse Compton scattering. We discuss the effects of the IR excess near periastron, for anisotropic inverse Compton scattering and associated gamma-ray production. We determine the IR excess from the circumstellar disc using a modified version of a curve of growth method, which takes into account the changing optical depth through the circumstellar disc during the orbit. The model is constrained using archive data and additional mid-IR observations obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) during 2011 January. The inverse Compton scattering rate was calculated for three orientations of the circumstellar disc. The predicted gamma-ray light curves show that the disc contribution is a maximum around periastron and not around the disc crossing epoch. This is a result of the disc being brightest near the stellar surface. Additional spectroscopic and near-IR observations were obtained of the system and these are discussed in relation to the possibility of shock heating during the disc crossing epoch.

Photometric and spectroscopic results are presented for the Be star X Per/HD 24534 from near-infrared monitoring in 2010-2011. The star is one of a sample of selected Be/X-ray binaries being monitored by us in the near-IR to study correlations between their X ray and near-IR behaviour. Comparison of the star's present near-IR magnitudes with earlier records shows the star to be currently in a prominently bright state with mean J, H, K magnitudes of 5.49, 5.33 and 5.06 respectively. The JHK spectra are dominated by emission lines of HeI and Paschen and Brackett lines of HI. Lines of OI 1.1287 and 1.3165 micron are also present and their relative strength indicates, since OI 1.1287 is stronger among the two lines, that Lyman beta fluorescence plays an important role in their excitation. Recombination analysis of the HI lines is done which shows that the Paschen and Brackett line strengths deviate considerably from case B predictions. These deviations are attributed to the lines being optically thick and this supposition is verified by calculating the line center optical depths predicted by recombination theory. Similar calculations indicate that the Pfund and Humphrey series lines should also be expected to be optically thick which is found to be consistent with observations reported in other studies. The spectral energy distribution of the star is constructed and shown to have an infrared excess. Based on the magnitude of the IR excess, which is modeled using a free-free contribution from the disc, the electron density in the disc is estimated and shown to be within the range of values expected in Be star discs.

We present a spectroscopic study of the most massive stars in the young (4 Myr old) stellar cluster LH 95 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This analysis allows us to complete the census of the stellar population of the system, previously investigated by us down to 0.4 M⊙ with deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys photometry. We perform spectral classification of the five stars in our sample, based on high-resolution optical spectroscopy obtained with the 2.2-m MPG/ESO Fibre-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph. We use complementary ground-based photometry, previously performed by us, to place these stars in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. We derive their masses and ages by interpolation from evolutionary models. The average ages and age spread of the most massive stars are found to be in general comparable with those previously derived for the cluster from its low-mass pre-main-sequence stars. We use the masses of the five sample stars to extend to the high-mass end the stellar initial mass function of LH 95 previously established by us. We find that the initial mass function follows a Salpeter relation down to the intermediate-mass regime at 2 M⊙. The second most massive star in LH 95 shows broad Balmer line emission and infrared excess, which are compatible with a classical Be star. The existence of such a star in the system adds a constrain to the age of the cluster, which is well covered by our age and age spread determinations. Rapidly rotating Be stars are observed as shell stars when the decretion disc is viewed edge on. Transitions between the two implies that the discs may be warped and precessing. Type II X-ray outbursts are thought to occur when the warped disc interacts with the fast stellar wind. We suggest that tides from a misaligned companion neutron star can cause the observed effects. We make numerical models of a Be star decretion disc in which the spin of the Be star is misaligned with the orbital axis of a neutron star companion. Tidal torques from the neutron star truncate the disc at a radius small enough that the neutron star orbit does not intersect the disc unless the eccentricity or misalignment is very large. A magnetic torque from the Be star that is largest at the equator, where the rotation is fastest, is approximated by an inner boundary condition. There are large oscillations in the mass and inclination of the disc as it moves towards a steady state. These large variations may explain the observed changes from Be star to Be shell star and vice-versa and also the Type II X-ray outbursts. We find the tidal timescale on which the disc warps, precesses and reaches a steady state to be around a year up to a few hundred years. If present, the oscillations in mass and disc inclination occur on a fraction of this timescale depending on the orbital parameters of the binary. The timescales associated with the tidal torque for observed Be star binaries suggest that these effects are important in all but the longest period binaries.

PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 is a binary system in which a 48-ms pulsar orbits around a Be star in a high eccentric orbit with a long orbital period of about 3.4 yr. Extensive broadband observational data are available for this system from radio band to very high energy (VHE) range. The multi-frequency emission is unpulsed and nonthermal, and is generally thought to be related to the relativistic electrons accelerated from the interaction between the pulsar wind and the stellar wind, where X-ray emission is from the synchrotron process and the VHE emission is from the inverse Compton (IC) scattering process. Here a shocked wind model with variation of the magnetic parameter $\sigma$ is developed for explaining the observations. By choosing proper param- eters, our model could reproduce two-peak profile in X-ray and TeV light curves. The effect of the disk exhibits an emission and an absorption components in the X-ray and TeV bands respectively. We suggest that some GeV flares will be produced by Doppler boosting the synchrotron spectrum. This model can possibly be used and be checked in other similar systems such as LS I+61o303 and LS 5039.

The southern open cluster NGC 4852 was re-observed in the UBVRI passbands to refine its intrinsic fundamental parameters. An extended spectral coverage was also undertaken aimed at obtaining a clear picture of the kind of stars inhabiting the cluster upper main sequence. We detected an unusual number of B-type stars including a new weak-emission Be star that raises to three the number of confirmed emission objects known in the cluster area. Our analysis, however, is conclusive in that none of them belongs to the cluster. With the new data set, we improved the fundamental parameters of NGC 4852: it is little bit farther than formerly assumed; the reddening, which increases smoothly with the distance, is lower than early estimates; and more importantly, it is really a young object of nearly 40-60 Myr, contrary to the age of 200 Myr stated before. By means of spectroscopic parallaxes we secured the star distances, finding a good agreement between spectroscopic and zero-age main-sequence fitting distances, within the errors. The spatial distribution of the stars allows us to infer that NGC 4852 is the final, closer to the Sun, structure of a star-forming region and that a distant group of early-B-type stars, located immediately beyond the cluster, seems to be part of an extended OB association. The three emission stars detected in the region are related to this farther group. Finally, two extremely faint and blue stars were also found in the cluster zone. They have no connection with NGC 4852 but seem to be white-dwarf candidates.

In the course of the XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a region to the east of the emission nebula N19 was observed in November 2009. To search for new candidates for high mass X-ray binaries the EPIC PN and MOS data of the detected point sources were investigated and their spectral and temporal characteristics identified. A new transient (XMMUJ005011.2-730026= SXP214) with a pulse period of 214.05 s was discovered; the source had a hard X-ray spectrum with power-law index of ~0.65. The accurate X-ray source location permits the identification of the X-ray source with a ~15th magnitude Be star, thereby confirming this system as a new Be/X-ray binary.

HR 7409 (7 Vul) is a newly identified Be star possibly part of the Gould Belt and is the massive component of a 69-day spectroscopic binary. The binary parameters and properties of the Be star measured using high-dispersion spectra obtained at Ondrejov Observatory and at Rozhen Observatory imply the presence of a low mass companion (~ 0.5-0.8 M_sun). If the pair is relatively young (

We have studied the very long-term temporal properties of the optical emission from Be X-ray binaries (BeX) in the Small Magellanic Cloud over a ~ 16 yr baseline, using light curves from the MACHO and OGLE databases. All the BeX in our sample display superorbital variations, many of them quasi-periodic on timescales of ~ 200-3000 d. These long-term variations are believed to be related to the formation and depletion of the circumstellar disc around the Be star and we compare and contrast their behaviour with that of the LMC's prototypical BeX, A0538-66. The great majority of sources show a correlation of outburst amplitude with brightness (the opposite to that seen in A0538-66) although the amplitudes are mostly small (< 0.1 mag). We suggest this is an orbital inclination effect. In addition, we have also detected many of their optical orbital periodicities, visible as a series of precisely regular outbursts. Furthermore, the amplitude of these periodic outbursts can vary through the long-term superorbital cycle, and we discuss mechanisms which can produce this effect, as well as examining an apparent correlation between these periodicities. As a by-product of this variation survey we have compiled a list of all the reported SMC BeX orbital and superorbital periodicities at optical and X-ray wavelengths.

We report on finding variations in amplitude of the two main oscillation frequencies found in the Be star Achernar, over a period of 5 years. They were uncovered by analysing photometric data of the star from the SMEI instrument. The two frequencies observed, 0.775 c/d and 0.725 c/d, were analysed in detail and their amplitudes were found to increase and decrease significantly over the 5-year period, with the amplitude of the 0.725 c/d frequency changing by up to a factor of eight. The nature of this event has yet to be properly understood, but the possibility of it being due to the effects of a stellar outburst or a stellar cycle are discussed.

The intent of this study is to determine the nature of the star and associated nebulosity S 235 B, which are located in a region of active star formation still heavily obscured by the parent molecular cloud. Low-resolution (R = 400) long-slit spectra of the star and nebulosity, and medium- (R = 1800) and high-resolution (R = 60 000) spectra of the central star are presented along with the results of Fabry-Perot interferometric imaging of the entire region. Based on the long-slit and Fabry-Perot observations, the nebulosity appears to be entirely reflective in nature, with the stellar component S 235 B providing most of the illuminating flux. The stellar source itself is classified here as a B1V star, with emission-line profiles indicative of an accretion disc. S 235 B thus belongs to the relatively rare class of early-type Hebrig Be stars. Based on the intensity of the reflected component, it is concluded that the accretion disc must be viewed nearly edge-on. Estimates of the accretion rate of S 235 B from the width of the Hα profile at 10 per cent of maximum intensity, a method which has been used lately for T Tauri stars and Brown Dwarfs, appear to be inconsistent with the mass outflow rate and accretion rate implied from previous infrared observations by Felli et al., suggesting this empirical law does not extend to higher masses. © 2009 RAS.

Recent papers published in the last years contributed to resolve the enigma on the hypothetical Be nature of the hot pulsating star $\beta$ Cep. This star shows variable emission in the H$\alpha$ line, typical for Be stars, but its projected rotational velocity is very much lower than the critical limit, contrary to what is expected for a typical Be star. The emission has been attributed to the secondary component of the $\beta$ Cep spectroscopic binary system. In this paper, using both ours and archived spectra, we attempted to recover the H$\alpha$ profile of the secondary component and to analyze its behavior with time for a long period. To accomplish this task, we first derived the atmospheric parameters of the primary: T$_{\rm eff}$ = 24000 $\pm$ 250 K and $\log g$ = 3.91 $\pm$ 0.10, then we used these values to compute its synthetic H$\alpha$ profile and finally we reconstructed the secondary's profile disentangling the observed one. The secondary's H$\alpha$ profile shows the typical two peaks emission of a Be star with a strong variability. We analyzed also the behavior versus time of some line width parameters: equivalent width, V/R, FWHM, peaks separation and radial velocity of the central depression. Projected rotational velocity ($v \sin i$) of the secondary and the dimension of the equatorial surrounding disk have been estimated, too.

We have constructed models of axisymmetric, circumstellar envelopes for Be star discs by successfully combining two numerical codes: a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer code which calculates the level populations and disc temperature distribution self-consistently, and a hydrodynamical code. The output of one code is used as input to the other code, and hence evolving density and thermal structures may be examined. The temperatures, disc density and velocity distribution are used to investigate the outflowing viscous disc model for Be stars. We find that these simulations place constraints on the power-law density decrease in the disc with increasing distance from the star. We find that the power-law index for the line-forming region of the disc lies between 3 and 3.5 with a small dispersion.

Optical and X-ray observations are presented here of a newly reported X-ray transient system in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The data reveal many previously unknown X-ray detections of this system and clear evidence for a 49.995d binary period. In addition, the optical photometry show recurring outburst features at the binary period which may well be indicative of the neutron star interacting with a circumstellar disk around a Be star.

After our recent discovery of four magnetic Herbig stars, we have decided to study in detail one of them, HD 200775, to determine if its magnetic topology is similar to that of the main sequence magnetic stars. With this aim, we monitored this star in Stokes I and V over more than two years, using the new spectropolarimeters ESPaDOnS at CFHT, and Narval at TBL. Using our data, we find that HD 200775 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary system, whose secondary seems similar, in temperature, to the primary. We determine the luminosity ratio of the system, and using the luminosity of the system found in literature, we derive the luminosity of both stars. From our measurements of the radial velocities of both stars we determine the ephemeris and the orbital parameters of the system. We have fitted 30 Stokes V profiles simultaneously, using a chi2 minimisation method, with a decentered-dipole model. The best-fit model provides a rotation period of 4.3281 d an inclination angle of 60 degrees, and a magnetic obliquity angle of 125 degrees. The polar strength of the magnetic dipole field is 1000 G, which is decentered by 0.05 R* from the center of the star. The derived magnetic field model is qualitatively identical to those commonly observed in the Ap/Bp stars, which bring strong argument in favour of the fossil field hypothesis, to explain the origin of the magnetic fields in the main sequence Ap/Bp stars. Our determination of the inclination of the rotation axis leads to a radius of the primary which is smaller than that derived from the HR diagram position. This can be explained by a larger intrinsic luminosity of the secondary relative to the primary, due to a larger circumstellar extinction of the secondary relative to the primary.

LSI +61 303 is one of the few X-ray binaries with Be star companion from which both radio and high-energy gamma-ray emission have been observed. We present XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations which reveal variability of the X-ray spectral index of the system. The X-ray spectrum is hard (photon index ~ 1.5) during the orbital phases of both high and low X-ray flux. However, the spectrum softens at the moment of transition from high to low X-ray state. The spectrum of the system in the hard X-ray band does not reveal the presence of a cut-off (or, at least a spectral break) at 10-60 keV energies, expected if the compact object is an accreting neutron star. The observed spectrum and spectral variability can be explained if the compact object in the system is a rotation powered pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, accepted to MNRAS

We report long-slit spectroscopic observations of the Herbig Ae/Be star Elias 1 in the 3.2-3.6 mum region covering the C-H stretch emission features of hydrogen-terminated diamonds and PAHs. The data were recorded at UKIRT using UIST and yield information on the profiles and intensities of the bands as a function of offset along the N-S and E-W axes centred on the close binary. The diamond and nearby IR continuum emission arises from a symmetrical inner core region (< 0.34 arcsec or 48 AU). The 3.3 mum PAH emission is extended along the E-W axis up to ~ 100 AU each side of the star. This result supports a suggestion of Haas, Leinert & Richichi (1997) of an E-W oriented bipolar nebula in Elias 1.

PSR B1259-63 is in a highly eccentric 3.4 year orbit with a Be star and crosses the Be star disc twice per orbit, just prior to and just after periastron. Unpulsed radio, X-ray and gamma-ray emission observed from the binary system is thought to be due to the collision of pulsar wind with the wind of Be star. We present here the results of new XMM-Newton observations of the PSR B1259-63 system during the beginning of 2004 as the pulsar approached the disc of Be star.We combine these results with earlier unpublished X-ray data from BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton as well as with ASCA data. The detailed X-ray lightcurve of the system shows that the pulsar passes (twice per orbit) through a well-defined gaussian-profile disk with the half-opening angle (projected on the pulsar orbit plane) ~18.5 deg. The intersection of the disk middle plane with the pulsar orbital plane is inclined at ~70 deg to the major axis of the pulsar orbit. Comparing the X-ray lightcurve to the TeV lightcurve of the system we find that the increase of the TeV flux some 10--100 days after the periastron passage is unambiguously related to the disk passage. At the moment of entrance to the disk the X-ray photon index hardens from 1.8 up to 1.2 before returning to the steeper value 1.5. Such behaviour is not easily accounted for by the model in which the X-ray emission is synchrotron emission from the shocked pulsar wind. We argue that the observed hardening of the X-ray spectrum is due to the inverse Compton or bremsstrahlung emission from 10-100 MeV electrons responsible for the radio synchrotron emission., 9 pages, accepted to MNRAS

We present a catalogue with coordinates and photometric data of 2446 Be star candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on a search of the OGLE II data base. The I-band light curves of these stars show outbursts in 24 per cent of the sample (Type-1 stars), high and low states in 10 per cent, periodic variations in 6 per cent (Type-3 stars), and stochastic variations in 60 per cent of the cases. We report on the result of the statistical study of light curves of Type-1 and Type-3 stars in the LMC, and the comparison with the previously reported results of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) sample. We find a statistically significant difference between amplitude, duration and asymmetry distributions of outbursts in both galaxies. Outbursts of SMC Type-1 stars are usually brighter, longer and with a slower decline. We find a bimodal distribution of periods of Type-3 stars in both galaxies, probably related to the recently discovered double periodic blue variables. We find also period and amplitude distributions of Type-3 LMC stars statistically different from those of the SMC stars. Our findings above suggest that the mechanisms causing the observed photometric variability of Type- 1 and Type-3 stars could depend on metallicity. Moreover, they suggest that the outbursts are not primarily caused by stellar winds.

Positions of High-Mass X-ray Binaries are often known precisely enough to unambiguously identify the optical component, and a number of those stars are monitored by the OGLE and MACHO collaborations. The light curves of two such candidates are examined for evidence of Be star behavior and for periodicity. One of the stars exhibits two periods of 6.833 and 15.586 hours, much shorter and more stable than periods of Be/X-Ray Binaries that are attributed to the Be star's disk, but consistent with short-term Be variability attributed to pulsations. The multiperiodicity is quantified with Fourier techniques and examined for phase stability; a combination of radial and non-radial pulsations is discussed.

This work represent the first major study of the optical and IR characteristics of the mass donor companions to the X-ray pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). In this work several new counterparts have been identified, and possible ones confirmed, as companions to X-ray pulsars in the SMC giving a total of 34 such objects now identified. In addition this work presents three new binary periods and confirms two X-ray periods using optical data for objects in this group. This homogeneous sample has been studied as a group to determine important general characteristics that may offer insight into the evolution of such systems. In particular, the spectral class distribution shows a much greater agreement with those of isolated Be stars, and appears to be in some disagreement with the galactic population of Be stars in Be/X-ray binaries. Studies of the long term optical modulation of the Be star companions reveal an extremely variable group of objects, a fact which will almost certainly make a major contribution to the pronounced X-ray variability. The spatial distribution of these systems within the SMC is investigated and strongly suggests a link between massive star formation and the HI density distribution. Finally, studies of the circumstellar disk characteristics reveal a strong link with optical variability offering important clues into the long-term stability of such disks.

We study the accretion on to the neutron star in Be/X-ray binaries, using a 3D SPH code and the data imported from a simulation by \citet{oka2} for a coplanar system with a short period ($P_{\rm orb}=24.3 \rm{d}$) and a moderate eccentricity $(e=0.34)$, which targeted the Be/X-ray binary 4U 0115+63. For simplicity, we adopt the polytropic equation of state. We find that a time-dependent accretion disc is formed around the neutron star regardless of the simulation parameters. In the long term, the disc evolves via a two-stage process, which consists of the initial developing stage and the later developed stage. The developed disc is nearly Keplerian. In the short term, the disc structure modulates with the orbital phase. The disc shrinks at the periastron passage of the Be star and restores its radius afterwards. The accretion rate on to the neutron star is also phase dependent, but its peak is broader and much lower than that of the mass-transfer rate from the Be disc, unless the polytropic exponent is as large as 5/3. Our simulations show that the truncated Be disk model for Be/X-ray binaries is consistent with the observed X-ray behaviour of 4U 0115+63., 13pages, 62figures, accepted to MNRAS. Detailed evidence on the system AX J0049.4-7323 is presented here to show how the passage of the neutron star in the binary system disrupts the circumstellar disk of the mass donor Be star. A similar effect is noted in three other Be/X-ray binary systems. Together the observational data should provide valuable tools for modelling these complex interactions., 4 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on a recent event in which, after more than a decade of slowly fading, the visual brightness of the massive young binary Z CMa suddenly started to rise by about 1 magnitude in December 1999, followed by a rapid decline to its previous brightness over the next six months. This behaviour is similar to that exhibited by this system around its eruption in February 1987. A comparison of the intrinsic luminosities of the system with recent evolutionary calculations shows that Z CMa may consist of a 16 M_sun B0 IIIe primary star and a ~ 3 M_sun FUOr secondary with a common age of ~ 3 x 10^5 yr. We also compare new high-resolution spectra obtained in Jan. and Feb. 2000, during the recent rise in brightness, with archive data from 1991 and 1996. The spectra are rich in emission lines, which originate from the envelope of the early B-type primary star. The strength of these emission lines increased strongly with the brightness of Z CMa. We interpret the collected spectral data in terms of an accretion disc with atmosphere around the Herbig B0e component of Z CMa, which has expanded during the outbursts of 1987 and 2000. A high resolution profile of the 6300 A [O I] emission line, obtained by us in March 2002 shows an increase in flux and a prominent blue shoulder to the feature extending to ~ -700 km/s, which was much fainter in the pre-outburst spectra. We propose that this change in profile is a result of a strong change in the collimation of a jet, as a result of the outburst at the start of this century., 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the viscous effects on the interaction between the coplanar Be-star disc and the neutron star in Be/X-ray binaries, using a three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics code. For simplicity, we assume the Be disc to be isothermal at the temperature of half the stellar effective temperature. In order to mimic the gas ejection process from the Be star, we inject particles with the Keplerian rotation velocity at a radius just outside the star. Both Be star and neutron star are treated as point masses. We find that the Be-star disc is effectively truncated if the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha_SS >> 1, which confirms the previous semi-analytical result. In the truncated disc, the material decreted from the Be star accumulates, so that the disc becomes denser more rapidly than if around an isolated Be star. The resonant truncation of the Be disc results in a significant reduction of the amount of gas captured by the neutron star and a strong dependence of the mass capture rate on the orbital phase. We also find that an eccentric mode is excited in the Be disc through direct driving due to a one-armed bar potential of the binary. The strength of the mode becomes greater in the case of a smaller viscosity. In a high-resolution simulation with alpha_SS=0.1, the eccentric mode is found to precess in a prograde sense. The mass capture rate by the neutron star modulates as the mode precesses., 15 pages, including 20 figures and 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Long-term variations are well-known in Be X-ray binaries, and are attributed to non-orbital changes in the structure of the Be circumstellar (equatorial) disc. However, the timescales involved are so long (tens of days, to years) that systematic studies have been very restricted. The ~8 year MACHO monitoring of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) therefore presents an ideal opportunity to undertake such studies of Be X-ray systems that lie within the monitored fields. Here we present MACHO observations of two LMC Be X-ray transients, EXO 0531-66 and H 0544-665, the light curves of which show substantial (~0.5 mag) long-term variations. However, our analysis shows little evidence for any periodic phenomena in the light curves of either source. We find an upper limit for detection of a short (1-100 d) periodicity in the V- and R-band light curves of EXO 0531-66 of 0.041 mag and 0.047 mag semi-amplitude, respectively. The upper limits for the V- and R-band data of H 0544-665 are 0.054 mag and 0.075 mag semi-amplitude, respectively. Both EXO 0531-66 and H 0544-665 become redder as they brighten, possibly due to variations in the structure of the equatorial disc around the Be star. Spectra of both sources show H$\alpha$ emission; for EXO 0531-66 we find the emission varies over time, thereby confirming its optical identification.

We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far infrared wavelengths. Fractional infrared luminosity $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$ and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than that found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may then represent the youngest examples of Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star as evident from the low $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$, scarcity of circumstellar dust, low polarization, presence of H$\alpha$ emission and near infrared excess and far infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free-free emission similar to other well known classical Be stars., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present an analysis of 555 high-dispersion echelle spectra of 19 Mon obtained from two sites as well as 115 Stromgren uvby observations. We show that three periodicities are present at 5.22994, 0.17019 and 4.88956 cycle d - 1 . The first periodicity has by far the largest amplitude. Photometric amplitude ratios and phase differences indicate an l = 2 mode, while the line profile variations unequivocally point to l = 2,m = -2. Because of the low amplitudes of the other two modes, very little can be said concerning them. Although 19 Mon was originally selected on the basis of its classification as a marginal Be star, the Be nature of the star is not supported by our observations.

We present three seasons of photometric observations and one season of intensive high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the Be star A Eridani. We show that only one period, P = 0.70173 d, is present in the photometry, although there are large light amplitude variations from season to season. We confirm a suspicion that light outbursts repeat at intervals of about 475 d. A total of 348 echelle spectra of the star were obtained over a 2-week observing run. We show that the periodic variations are present in the emission wings of the helium lines, in the emission wings of the Ha line and in the absorption cores of Hβ and Hy. Together with the fact that the periodic variations appear outside the projected rotational velocity limit, this indicates that they are associated with circumstellar material immediately above the photosphere and supports the idea of corotating gas clouds. We present evidence in support of a true rotational period of 2P = 1.40346 d and suggest that the mass loss in Be stars is caused by centrifugal magnetic acceleration.

ABSTRA C T In order to reveal the star-forming history of the molecular cloud complex we studied the intermediate mass stellar population in the Cepheus Flare region. (Paper I dealt with the distance and the young stellar object candidates of the region.) Correlating the IRAS Point Source Catalogue and Faint Source Catalogue positions with those of 1214 B8‐A8 and 1760 F0‐F5 type stars brighter than V < 13 mag and classified during an objective prism survey, we identified 19 stars showing far-infrared excess emission in the Cepheus Flare region. In addition to the 16 stars whose counterparts are given in the IRAS catalogues, we found three more stars with infrared excess not recognized before. In order to identify the young medium-mass stars associated with the Cepheus Flare molecular clouds we observed the optical spectra of the IR-excess stars, and using published optical photometry and the IRAS data we examined their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and IRAS two-colour diagram. The observations resulted in the discovery of a new Herbig Ae/Be star, BD 16881118, coinciding with IRAS 2116916842. More evolved HAe/Be stars may be SAO 19953, BD 16781314 and BD 16981231, whose Ha lines showed weak emission components. Possible b Pictoris- or Vega-type stars may be HD 203854, HD 212826 and HD 216486, whereas the far-infrared fluxes at the positions of BD 17281018, HD 210806 and HD 217903 can be attributed to the heating of the interstellar environment. We used distances and radial velocities of the stars derived from the spectroscopy and published optical photometry as indicators of their relations to the clouds. Information on the environment of the observed stars deduced from the diffuse interstellar band at l 6613 is briefly discussed.

We present the results of a multisite spectroscopic and photometric campaign on the Be star ω Orionis. From the photometry and radial velocity variation of several spectral lines, we confirm that the star is a variable with period P=0.97d. Only one period can be extracted from both the photometric and radial velocity observations. We find that the projected rotational velocity from the helium lines (vsini=173kms-1) is considerably smaller than from the metal lines (vsini=226kms-1). The line profiles show an excess absorption feature moving from blue to red for half the period and from red to blue for the other half of the period. Another excess absorption feature moves exactly out of phase. The excess absorption features are present in photospheric lines as well as in lines which are significantly affected by circumstellar material, such as Hβ. From this we conclude that the periodic variations are most probably associated with corotating circumstellar material.

We present new intensive photometric observations of the Be star μ Cen for several seasons which support a period close to 1 d. We also present high-resolution spectroscopic data consisting of 302 spectra in 1999 and 864 spectra in 2000, all obtained within a two-week observing run in each season. We use stacked grey-scale plots of spectra, from which the mean line profile has been removed, to examine the profile variations. We find that most nights show one residual absorption feature, moving from blue to red, visible in all helium and metal lines and also clearly visible in Hα and other lines formed in the circumstellar environment. We therefore conclude that this feature is of circumstellar origin. In addition, a residual absorption feature moving from red to blue is sometimes seen at irregular intervals. We find that the residual absorption feature frequently strays outside the projected rotational velocity limit and that on occasions it remains well within this limit. The radial velocity data reproduce only two of the six frequencies previously found in the star. We point out that this by no means implies that the star is a multiperiodic, non-radial pulsator. Photometric data obtained over several seasons indicate a period very close to 1 d and not the 0.5-d period found from the radial velocities. We describe an outburst which occurred during the run and which resulted in increased Hα emission two nights later. It is clear that outbursts in Be stars are localized events and that the gas released by outbursts is probably responsible for localized increased absorption, resulting in periodic light and line profile variations.

We present a ~ 5-yr optical light curve of the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A0538-66 obtained as a by-product of the MACHO Project. These data reveal both a long-term modulation at P = 420.8 +/- 0.8 d and a short-term modulation at 16.6510 +/- 0.0022 d which, within errors, confirms the previously found orbital period. Furthermore, the orbital activity is only seen at certain phases of the 421 d cycle suggesting that the long-term modulation is related to variations in the Be star envelope., 4 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report observations which confirm the identity of the optical/IR counterpartto the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer transient source XTE J0111.2–7317. The coun-terpart is suggested to be a B0-B2 star (luminosity class III–V) showing an IR excessand strong Balmer emission lines. The distance derived from reddening and systemicvelocity measurements puts the source in the SMC. Unusually, the source exhibits anextended asymetric Hα structure.Key words: stars: emission-line, Be - star: binaries - infrared: stars - X-rays: stars -stars: pulsars 1 INTRODUCTIONThe Be/X-ray and supergiant binary systems represent theclass of massive X-ray binaries. A survey of the literaturereveals that of the 96 proposed massive X-ray binary pul-sar systems, 67% of the identified systems fall within theBe/X-ray group of binaries. The orbit of the Be star andthe compact object, presumably a neutron star, is generallywide and eccentric. The optical star exhibits Hα line emis-sion and continuum free-free emission (revealed as excessflux in the IR) from a disk of circumstellar gas. Most of theBe/X-ray sources are also very transient in the emission ofX-rays.Progress towards a better understanding of the physicsof these systems depends on a multi-wavelength programmeof observations. From observations of the Be star in the opti-cal and IR, the physical conditions under which the neutronstar is accreting matter can be determined. In combinationwith hard X-ray timing and flux observations, this yields anear complete picture of the accretion process. We analyse a series of line profile observations of the He i 6678 line in z Oph. A period analysis on these data using the mode and moments of the line profile confirms the two previously known periods. We describe a new method of mode identification for pulsating stars in which the calculated profiles are directly fitted to observed profiles. The method yields the full set of pulsational parameters including the spherical harmonic degree, `, and azimuthal number, m. Application of the method to these data confirms the mode identifications previously suggested for the two periodicities. We find that the derived pulsational parameters are physically realistic and conclude that non-radial pulsation is the most likely explanation for the travelling subfeatures. However, a unique mode identification is still not possible ± several non-sectorial modes fit the data as well as the usually adopted sectorial identifications. The predicted photometric amplitudes are in good accord with upper limits derived from photometric observations. We conclude that z Oph is a star in the b Cep instability strip in which two modes of high degree (probably ` ˆ 4 and ` ˆ 8) are excited. We present an interpretation of these findings in which the cause of the low-order line profile and light variations in periodic Be stars is corotating photospheric clouds, while the travelling subfeatures are incidental to the Be phenomenon and are a result of non-radial
