Undisturbed galaxy clusters are characterized by a massive and large elliptical galaxy at their center, i.e. the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG). How these central galaxies form is still debated. According to most models, a typical epoch for their assembly is z~1-2. We have performed a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of the core of XDCPJ0044.0-2033 (XDCP0044), one of the most massive and densest galaxy clusters currently known at redshift z~1.6, whose central galaxy population shows high star formation compared to lower-z clusters and an X-ray AGN located close to its center. SINFONI J-, H- and KMOS YJ-, H- bands spectroscopic data have been analyzed, together with deep archival HST photometric data in F105W, F140W, and F160W bands, Chandra X-ray, radio JVLA data at 1-2 GHz, and ALMA band-6 observations. In the central region of the cluster (~70x70 kpc^2), 2 systems of interacting galaxies have been identified and studied (Complex A and B), with a total of 7 confirmed cluster members. These galaxies show perturbed morphologies and 3 of them show signs of AGN activity. In particular, 2 type-1 AGN with typical broad lines have been found at the center of each complex (both of them X-ray obscured and highly accreting; Eddington ratio ~0.5), while a type-2 AGN has been discovered in Complex A. The AGN at the center of Complex B is also detected in X-ray while the other 2 are spatially related to radio emission. The 3 AGN provide one of the closest AGN triple at z>1 revealed so far with a minimum(maximum) projected distance of ~10(40) kpc. The observation of high star formation, merger signatures and nuclear activity in the core of XDCP0044 suggests that all these processes are key ingredients in shaping the nascent BCG. According to our data, XDCP0044 could form a typical massive galaxy of 10^12 Msun, hosting a Black Hole of 2x10^8-10^9 Msun, in a time scale of the order of ~2.5 Gyrs., 15 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. Gamma -ray bursts (GRBs) observed up to redshifts $z>9.4$ can be used as possible probes to test cosmological models. Here we show how changes of the slope of the {\it luminosity $L^*_X$ -break time $T^*_a$} correlation in GRB afterglows, hereafter the LT correlation, affect the determination of the cosmological parameters. With a simulated data set of 101 GRBs with a central value of the correlation slope that differs on the intrinsic one by a $5\sigma$ factor, we find an overstimated value of the matter density parameter, $\Omega_M$, compared to the value obtained with SNe Ia, while the Hubble constant, $H_0$, best fit value is still compatible in 1$\sigma$ compared to other probes. We show that this compatibility of $H_0$ is due to the large intrinsic scatter associated with the simulated sample. Instead, if we consider a subsample of high luminous GRBs ($HighL$), we find that both the evaluation of $H_0$ and $\Omega_M$ are not more compatible in 1$\sigma$ and $\Omega_M$ is underestimated by the $13\%$. However, the $HighL$ sample choice reduces dramatically the intrinsic scatter of the correlation, thus possibly identifying this sample as the standard canonical `GRBs' confirming previous results presented in Dainotti et al. (2010,2011). Here, we consider the LT correlation as an example, but this reasoning can be extended also for all other GRB correlations. In literature so far GRB correlations are not corrected for redshift evolution and selection biases, therefore we are not aware of their intrinsic slopes and consequently how far the use of the observed correlations can influence the derived `best' cosmological settings. Cosmic shear tomography has emerged as one of the most promising tools to both investigate the nature of dark energy and discriminate between General Relativity and modified gravity theories. In order to successfully achieve these goals, systematics in shear measurements have to be taken into account; their impact on the weak lensing power spectrum has to be carefully investigated in order to estimate the bias induced on the inferred cosmological parameters. To this end, we develop here an efficient tool to compute the power spectrum of systematics by propagating, in a realistic way, shear measurement, source properties and survey setup uncertainties. Starting from analytical results for unweighted moments and general assumptions on the relation between measured and actual shear, we derive analytical expressions for the multiplicative and additive bias, showing how these terms depend not only on the shape measurement errors, but also on the properties of the source galaxies (namely, size, magnitude and spectral energy distribution). We are then able to compute the amplitude of the systematics power spectrum and its scaling with redshift, while we propose a multigaussian expansion to model in a non-parametric way its angular scale dependence. Our method allows to self-consistently propagate the systematics uncertainties to the finally observed shear power spectrum, thus allowing us to quantify the departures from the actual spectrum. We show that even a modest level of systematics can induce non-negligible deviations, thus leading to a significant bias on the recovered cosmological parameters., 19 pages, 5 tables, 4 figures

As soon as their extragalactic origins were established, the hope to make Gamma - Ray Bursts (GRBs) standardizeable candles to probe the very high - z universe has opened the search for scaling relations between redshift independent observable quantities and distance dependent ones. Although some remarkable success has been achieved, the empirical correlations thus found are still affected by a significant intrinsic scatter which downgrades the precision in the inferred GRBs Hubble diagram. We investigate here whether this scatter may come from fitting together objects belonging to intrinsically different classes. To this end, we rely on a cladistics analysis to partition GRBs in homogenous families according to their rest frame properties. Although the poor statistics prevent us from drawing a definitive answer, we find that both the intrinsic scatter and the coefficients of the $E_{peak}$\,-\,$E_{iso}$ and $E_{peak}$\,-\,$L$ correlations significantly change depending on which subsample is fitted. It turns out that the fit to the full sample leads to a scaling relation which approximately follows the diagonal of the region delimited by the fits to each homogenous class. We therefore argue that a preliminary identification of the class a GRB belongs to is necessary in order to select the right scaling relation to be used in order to not bias the distance determination and hence the Hubble diagram.

The spatial variation of the colour of a galaxy may introduce a bias in the measurement of its shape if the PSF profile depends on wavelength. We study how this bias depends on the properties of the PSF and the galaxies themselves. The bias depends on the scales used to estimate the shape, which may be used to optimise methods to reduce the bias. Here we develop a general approach to quantify the bias. Although applicable to any weak lensing survey, we focus on the implications for the ESA Euclid mission. Based on our study of synthetic galaxies we find that the bias is a few times 10^-3 for a typical galaxy observed by Euclid. Consequently, it cannot be neglected and needs to be accounted for. We demonstrate how one can do so using spatially resolved observations of galaxies in two filters. We show that HST observations in the F606W and F814W filters allow us to model and reduce the bias by an order of magnitude, sufficient to meet Euclid's scientific requirements. The precision of the correction is ultimately determined by the number of galaxies for which spatially-resolved observations in at least two filters are available. We focus on a modified version of Horava - Lifschitz theory and, in particular, we consider the impact of its weak - field static spherically symmetric limit on the galaxy dynamics. In a previous paper, we used the modified gravitational potential obtained in this theory to evaluate the Milky Way rotation curve using a spheroidal truncated power - law bulge and a double exponential disc as the only sources of the gravitational field and showed that the modified rotation curved is not in agreement with the data. Making a step forward, we here include also the contribution from a dark matter halo in order to see whether this helps fitting the rotation curve data. As a test case, we consider a sample of spiral galaxies with smooth baryon matter distribution and well measured circular velocity profiles. It turns out that, although a marginal agreement with the data can be found, this can only be obtained if the dark matter halo has an unrealistically small virial mass and incredibly large concentration. Such results can be interpreted as a strong evidence against the reliability of the gravitational potential obtained in the modified version of Horava -Lifschitz theory that we consider.

According to the now strongly supported concordance Λ cold dark matter model, galaxies may be grossly described as a luminous component embedded in a dark matter halo. The density profile of these mass-dominating haloes may be determined by N-body simulations which mimic the evolution of the tiny initial density perturbations during the process leading to the structures we observe today. Unfortunately, when the effect of baryons is taken into account, the situation gets much more complicated due to the difficulties in simulating their physics. As a consequence, a definitive prediction of how dark matter haloes should presently look is still missing. We revisit here this issue from an observational point of view devoting our attention to dwarf galaxies. Being likely dark matter dominated, these systems are ideal candidates to investigate the present-day halo density profiles and check whether dark matter related quantities correlate with stellar ones or the environment. By fitting a large sample of well-measured rotation curves, we infer constraints on both halo structural parameters (such as the logarithmic slope of the density profile and its concentration) and derived quantities (e.g. the mass fraction and the Newtonian acceleration) which could then be used to constrain galaxy formation scenarios. Moreover, we investigate whether the halo properties correlate with the environment the galaxy lives in, thus offering a new tool to deepen our understanding of galaxy formation.

We analyze the stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) gradients in a large sample of local galaxies taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, spanning a wide range of stellar masses and morphological types. As suggested by the well known relationship between M/L ratios and colors, we show that M/L gradients are strongly correlated with colour gradients, which we trace to the effects of age variations. Stellar M/L gradients generally follow patterns of variation with stellar mass and galaxy type that were previous found for colour and metallicty gradients. In late-type galaxies M/L gradients are negative, steepening with increasing mass. In early-type galaxies M/L gradients are shallower while presenting a two-fold trend: they decrease with mass up to a characteristic mass of \M* \sim 10^10.3 M_sun and increase at larger masses. We compare our findings with other analyses and discuss some implications for galaxy formation and for dark matter estimates.

Thanks to their enormous energy release which allows to detect them up to very high redshift, Gamma Rays Bursts (GRBs) have recently attracted a lot of interest to probe the Hubble diagram (HD) deep into the matter dominated era and hence complement Type Ia Supernoave (SNeIa). However, lacking a local GRBs sample, calibrating the scaling relations proposed as an equivalent to the Phillips law to standardize GRBs is not an easy task because of the need to estimate the GRBs luminosity distance in a model independent way. We consider here three different calibration methods based

Scaling relations among dark matter (DM) and stellar quantities are a valuable tool to constrain formation scenarios and the evolution of galactic structures. However, most of the DM properties are actually not directly measured, but derived through model dependent mass mapping procedures. It is therefore crucial to adopt theoretically and observationally well founded models. We use here an updated version of the secondary infall model (SIM) to predict the halo density profile, taking into account the effects of angular momentum, dissipative friction and baryons collapse. The resulting family of halo profiles depends on one parameter only, the virial mass, and nicely fits the projected mass and aperture velocity dispersion of a sample of intermediate redshift lens galaxies. We derive DM related quantities (namely the column density and the Newtonian acceleration) and investigate their correlations with stellar mass, luminosity, effective radius and virial mass.

Considering galaxies as self - gravitating systems of many collisionless particles allows to use methods of statistical mechanics inferring the distribution function of these stellar systems. Actually, the long range nature of the gravitational force contrasts with the underlying assumptions of Boltzmann statistics where the interactions among particles are assumed to be short ranged. A particular generalization of the classical Boltzmann formalism is available within the nonextensive context of Tsallis q -statistics, subject to non -additivity of the entropies of sub - systems. Assuming stationarity and isotropy in the velocity space, it is possible solving the generalized collsionless Boltzmann equation to derive the galaxy distribution function and density profile. We present a particular set of nonextensive models and investigate their dynamical and observable properties. As a test of the viability of this generalized context, we fit the rotation curve of M33 showing that the proposed approach leads to dark matter haloes in excellent agreement with the observed data.

A viable alternative to the dark energy as a solution of the cosmic speed up problem is represented by Extended Theories of Gravity. Should this be indeed the case, there will be an impact not only on cosmological scales, but also at any scale, from the Solar System to extragalactic ones. In particular, the gravitational potential can be different from the Newtonian one commonly adopted when computing the circular velocity fitted to spiral galaxies rotation curves. Phenomenologically modelling the modified point mass potential as the sum of a Newtonian and a Yukawa-like correction, we simulate observed rotation curves for a spiral galaxy described as the sum of an exponential disc and a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter halo. We then fit these curves assuming parameterized halo models (either with an inner cusp or a core) and using the Newtonian potential to estimate the theoretical rotation curve. Such a study allows us to investigate the bias on the disc and halo model parameters induced by the systematic error induced by forcing the gravity theory to be Newtonian when it is not. As a general result, we find that both the halo scale length and virial mass are significantly overestimated, while the dark matter mass fraction within the disc optical radius is typically underestimated. Moreover, should the Yukawa scale length be smaller than the disc half mass radius, then the logarithmic slope of the halo density profile would turn out to be shallower than the NFW one. Finally, cored models are able to fit quite well the simulated rotation curves, provided the disc mass is biased high in agreement with the results in literature, favoring cored haloes and maximal discs. Such results make us argue that the cusp/core controversy could actually be the outcome of an incorrect assumption about which theory of gravity must actually be used in computing the theoretical circular velocity.

Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) has been shown to be able to fit spiral galaxy rotation curves as well as giving a theoretical foundation for empirically determined scaling relations, such as the Tully - Fisher law, without the need for a dark matter halo. As a complementary analysis, one should investigate whether MOND can also reproduce the dynamics of early - type galaxies (ETGs) without dark matter. As a first step, we here show that MOND can indeed fit the observed central velocity dispersion $\sigma_0$ of a large sample of ETGs assuming a simple MOND interpolating functions and constant anisotropy. We also show that, under some assumptions on the luminosity dependence of the Sersic n parameter and the stellar M/L ratio, MOND predicts a fundamental plane for ETGs : a log - linear relation among the effective radius $R_{eff}$, $\sigma_0$ and the mean effective intensity $\langle I_e \rangle$. However, we predict a tilt between the observed and the MOND fundamental planes.

We present the Hubble diagram (HD) of 66 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) derived using only data from their X - ray afterglow lightcurve. To this end, we use the recently updated L_X - T_a correlation between the break time T_a and the X - ray luminosity L_X measured at T_a calibrated from a sample of Swift GRBs with lightcurves well fitted by the Willingale et al. (2007) model. We then investigate the use of this HD to constrain cosmological parameters when used alone or in combination with other data showing that the use of GRBs leads to constraints in agreement with previous results in literature. We finally argue that a larger sample of high luminosity GRBs can provide a valuable information in the search for the correct cosmological model.

We analyse the colour gradients (CGs) of ∼50 000 nearby Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies estimated by their photometrical parameters (Sersic index, total magnitude and effective radius). From synthetic spectral models based on a simplified star formation recipe, we derive the mean spectral properties and explain the observed radial trends of the colour as gradients of the stellar population age and metallicity. CGs have been correlated with colour, luminosity, size, velocity dispersion and stellar mass. Distinct behaviours are found for early- and late-type galaxies (ETGs and LTGs), pointing to slightly different physical processes at work in different morphological types and at different mass scales. In particular, the most massive ETGs (M * ≳ 10 11 M ⊙ ) have shallow (even flat) CGs in correspondence of shallow (negative) metallicity gradients. In the stellar mass range (10 10.3 -10 10.5 ) ≲ M * ≲ 10 11 M ⊙ , the metallicity gradients reach their minimum of ∼ - 0.5 dex -1 . At M * ∼ 10 10.3 - 10 10.5 M ⊙ , colour and metallicity gradient slopes suddenly change. They turn out to anticorrelate with the mass, becoming highly positive at the very low masses, the transition from negative to positive occurring at M * ∼ 10 9-9.5 M ⊙ . These correlations are mirrored by similar trends of CGs with the effective radius and the velocity dispersion. We have also found that age gradients anticorrelate with metallicity gradients, as predicted by hierarchical cosmological simulations for ETGs. On the other side, LTGs have colour and metallicity gradients which systematically decrease with mass (and are always more negative than in ETGs), consistently with the expectation from gas infall and supernovae feedback scenarios. Metallicity is found to be the main driver of the trend of CGs, especially for LTGs, but age gradients are not negligible and seem to play a significant role too. Owing to the large data set, we have been able to highlight that older galaxies have systematically shallower age and metallicity gradients than younger ones. The emerging picture is qualitatively consistent with the predictions from hydrodynamical and chemodynamical simulations. In particular, our results for high-mass galaxies are in perfect agreement with predictions based on the merging scenario, while the evolution of LTGs and younger and less massive ETGs seems to be mainly driven by infall and supernovae feedback.

Early - type galaxies (ETGs) define a narrow strip in the size - mass plane because of the observed correlation between the effective radius $R_{eff}$ and the total stellar mass $M_{\star}$. When expressed in logarithmic units, a linear relation, $\log{R_{eff}} \propto \gamma \log{M_{\star}}$, is indeed observationally found, but the slope $\gamma$ deviates from the canonical $\gamma = 1/2$ value which can be naively predicted for a spherically symmetric isotropic system. We propose here that a transfer of angular momentum to the stellar component induces an anisotropy in the velocity space thus leading to a modified distribution function (DF). Assuming an Osipkov - Merritt like anisotropic DF, we derive an analytic relation between the slope $\gamma$ of the size - mass relation and the slope $\alpha$ of the angular momentum term in the DF. With this simple model, we are then able to recover the observed $\gamma$ value provided $\alpha$ is suitably set. It turns out that an anisotropy profile which is tangential inside $\sim 0.6 r_a$ and radial outside, with $r_a$ the anisotropy radius, is able to reproduce the observed size - mass relation observed for massive ($M_{\star} \ge 2 \times 10^{10} \ h^{-1} {\rm M}_{\odot}$) elliptical galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the possibility that the observed flatness of the rotation curves of spiral galaxies is not an evidence for the existence of dark matter haloes, but rather a signal of the breakdown of General Relativity. To this aim, we consider power - law fourth order theories of gravity obtained by replacing the scalar curvature $R$ with $f(R) = f_0 R^n$ in the gravity Lagrangian. We show that, in the low energy limit, the gravitational potential generated by a pointlike source may be written as $\Phi(r) \propto r^{-1} \left [ 1 + (r/r_c)^{\beta} \right ]$ with $\beta$ a function of the slope $n$ of the gravity Lagrangian and $r_c$ a scalelength depending on the gravitating system properties. In order to apply the model to realistic systems, we compute the modified potential and the rotation curve for spherically symmetric and for thin disk mass distributions. It turns out that the potential is still asymptotically decreasing, but the corrected rotation curve, although not flat, is higher than the Newtonian one thus offering the possibility to fit rotation curves without dark matter. To test the viability of the model, we consider a sample of 15 low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies with combined HI and H$\alpha$ measurements of the rotation curve extending in the putative dark matter dominated region. We find a very good agreement between the theoretical rotation curve and the data using only stellar disk and interstellar gas.

We present a numerical method to estimate the lensing parameters and the Hubble constant H_0 from quadruply imaged gravitational lens systems. The lens galaxy is modeled using both separable deflection potentials and constant mass-to-light ratio profiles, while possible external perturbations have been taken into account introducing an external shear. The model parameters are recovered inverting the lens and the time delay ratio equations and imposing a set of physically motivated selection criteria. We investigate correlations among the model parameters and the Hubble constant. Finally, we apply the codes to the real lensed quasars PG 1115+080 and RX J0911+0551, and combine the results from these two systems to get H_0 = 56 +/- 23 km/(s Mpc). In addition, we are able to fit to the single systems a general elliptical potential with a non fixed angular part, and then we model the two lens systems with the same potential and a shared H_0: in this last case we estimate H_0=49_(-11)^(+6) km/(s Mpc).

The Horava - Lifshitz (HL) theory has recently attracted a lot of interest as a viable solution to some quantum gravity related problems and the presence of an effective cosmological constant able to drive the cosmic speed up. We show here that, in the weak field limit, the HL proposal leads to a modification of the gravitational potential because of two additive terms (scaling respectively as $r^2$ and $r^{-4}$) to the Newtonian $1/r$ potential. We then derive a general expression to compute the rotation curve of an extended system under the assumption that the mass density only depends on the cylindrical coordinates $(R, z)$ showing that the HL modification induces a dependence of the circular velocity on the mass function which is a new feature of the theory. As a first exploratory analysis, we then try fitting the Milky Way rotation curve using its visible components only in order to see whether the HL modified potential can be an alternative to the dark matter framework. This turns out not to be the case so that we argue that dark matter is still needed, but the amount of dark matter and the dark halo density profile have to be revised according to the new HL potential.
