Recent observations of radio relics - diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters - have revealed that these sources are not smooth but consist of structures in the form of threads and filaments. We investigate the origin of these filamentary structures and the role of projection effects. To this end, we have developed a tool that extracts the filamentary structures from background emission. Moreover, it is capable of studying both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. We apply our structure extractor to, both, observations and cosmological simulations of radio relics. Using Minkowski functionals, we determine the shape of the identified structures. In our 2D analysis, we find that the brightest structures in the observed and simulated maps are filaments. Our analysis of the 3D simulation data shows that radio relics do not consist of sheets but only of filaments and ribbons. Furthermore, we did not find any measurable projection effects that could hide any sheet-like structures in projection. We find that, both, the magnetic field and the shock front consist of filaments and ribbons that cause filamentary radio emission., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Turbulence in the intracluster, intragroup, and circumgalactic medium plays a crucial role in the self-regulated feeding and feedback loop of central supermassive black holes. We dissect the three-dimensional turbulent `weather' in a high-resolution Eulerian simulation of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, shown to be consistent with multiple multi-wavelength observables of massive galaxies. We carry out post-processing simulations of Lagrangian tracers to track the evolution of enstrophy, a proxy of turbulence, and its related sinks and sources. This allows us to isolate in depth the physical processes that determine the evolution of turbulence during the recurring strong and weak AGN feedback events, which repeat self-similarly over the Gyr evolution. We find that the evolution of enstrophy/turbulence in the gaseous halo is highly dynamic and variable over small temporal and spatial scales, similar to the chaotic weather processes on Earth. We observe major correlations between the enstrophy amplification and recurrent AGN activity, especially via its kinetic power. While advective and baroclinc motions are always sub-dominant, stretching motions are the key sources of the amplification of enstrophy, in particular along the jet/cocoon, while rarefactions decrease it throughout the bulk of the volume. This natural self-regulation is able to preserve, as ensemble, the typically-observed subsonic turbulence during cosmic time, superposed by recurrent spikes via impulsive anisotropic AGN features (wide outflows, bubbles, cocoon shocks). Observations of radio relics at very high frequency (>10 GHz) can help to understand how particles age and are (re-)accelerated in galaxy cluster outskirts and how magnetic fields are amplified in these environments. In this work, we present new single-dish 18.6 GHz Sardinia Radio Telescope and 14.25 GHz Effelsberg observations of the well known northern radio relic of CIZA J2242.8+5301. We detected the relic which shows a length of $\sim$1.8 Mpc and a flux density equal to $\rm S_{14.25\,GHz}=(9.5\pm3.9)\,mJy$ and $\rm S_{18.6\,GHz}=(7.67\pm0.90)\,mJy$ at 14.25 GHz and 18.6 GHz respectively. The resulting best-fit model of the relic spectrum from 145 MHz to 18.6 GHz is a power-law spectrum with spectral index $\alpha=1.12\pm0.03$: no evidence of steepening has been found in the new data presented in this work. For the first time, polarisation properties have been derived at 18.6 GHz, revealing an averaged polarisation fraction of $\sim40\%$ and a magnetic field aligned with the 'filaments' or 'sheets' of the relic., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Structure formation shocks are believed to be the largest accelerators of cosmic rays in the Universe. However, little is still known about their efficiency in accelerating relativistic electrons and protons as a function of their magnetization properties, i.e. of their magnetic field strength and topology. In this work, we analyzed both uniform and adaptive mesh resolution simulations of large-scale structures with the magnetohydrodynamical grid code Enzo, studying the dependence of shock obliquity with different realistic scenarios of cosmic magnetism. We found that shock obliquities are more often perpendicular than what would be expected from a random three-dimensional distribution of vectors, and that this effect is particularly prominent in the proximity of filaments, due to the action of local shear motions. By coupling these results to recent works from particle-in-cell simulations, we estimated the flux of cosmic-ray protons in galaxy clusters, and showed that in principle the riddle of the missed detection of hadronic gamma-ray emission by the Fermi-LAT can be explained if only quasi-parallel shocks accelerate protons. On the other hand, for most of the cosmic web the acceleration of cosmic-ray electrons is still allowed, due to the abundance of quasi-perpendicular shocks. Turbulence generated by large-scale motions during structure formation affects the evolution of the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium. As enstrophy is a measure of the magnitude of vorticity, we study the generation and evolution of turbulence by analysing the Lagrangian history of enstrophy. For this purpose we combine cosmological simulations carried out with the ENZO-code with our Lagrangian post-processing tool CRaTer. This way we are able to quantify the individual source terms of enstrophy in the course of the accretion of groups onto galaxy clusters. Here we focus on the redshift range from $z=1$ to $z=0$. Finally, we measure the rate of dissipation of turbulence and estimate the resulting amplification of intracluster magnetic fields. We find that compressive and baroclinic motions are the main sources of enstrophy, while stretching motions and dissipation affect most of the ensuing enstrophy evolution. Radio emission in the form of giant radio relics is observed at the periphery of galaxy clusters. This non-thermal emission is an important tracer for cosmic-ray electrons and intracluster magnetic fields. One striking observational feature of these objects is their high degree of polarisation which provides information on the magnetic fields at the relics' positions. In this contribution, we test if state-of-the-art high resolution cosmological simulations are able to reproduce the polarisation features of radio relics. Therefore, we present a new analysis of high-resolution cosmological simulations to study the polarisation properties of radio relics in detail. In order to compare our results with current and future radio observations, we create mock radio observations of the diffuse polarised emission from a massive galaxy clusters using six different projections, for different observing frequencies and for different telescopes. Our simulations suggest that, due to the effect of Faraday rotation, it is extremely difficult to relate the morphology of the polarised emission for observing frequencies below $1.4 \ \mathrm{GHz}$ to the real magnetic field structure in relics. We can reproduce the observed degree of polarisation and also several small-scale structures observed in real radio relics, but further work would be needed to reproduce some large-scale spectacular features as observed in real radio relics, such as the "Sausage" and the "Toothbrush" relics., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages, 13 figures

Radio relics are sites of electron (re)acceleration in merging galaxy clusters but the mechanism of acceleration and the topology of the magnetic field in and near relics are yet to be understood. We are carrying out an observational campaign on double relic galaxy clusters starting with RXC J1314.4-2515. With $Jansky Very Large Array$ multi-configuration observations in the frequency range 1-4 GHz, we perform both spectral and polarization analyses, using the Rotation Measure synthesis technique. We use archival $XMM-Newton$ observations to constrain the properties of the shocked region. We discover a possible connection between the activity of a radio galaxy and the emission of the eastern radio relic. In the northern elongated arc of the western radio relic, we detect polarized emission with an average polarization fraction of $31 \ \%$ at 3 GHz and we derive the Mach number of the underlying X-ray shock. Our observations reveal low levels of fractional polarization and Faraday-complex structures in the southern region of the relic, which point to the presence of thermal gas and filamentary magnetic field morphology inside the radio emitting volume. We measured largely different Rotation Measure dispersion from the two relics. Finally, we use cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations to constrain the magnetic field, viewing angle, and to derive the acceleration efficiency of the shock. We find that the polarization properties of RXC J1314.4-2515 are consistent with a radio relic observed at $70^{\circ}$ with respect to the line of sight and that efficient re-acceleration of fossil electrons has taken place., 24 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The joint analysis of the Dispersion and Faraday Rotation Measure from distant, polarised Fast Radio Bursts may be used to put constraints on the origin and distribution of extragalactic magnetic fields on cosmological scales. While the combination of Dispersion and Faraday Rotation Measure can in principle give the average magnetic fields along the line-of-sight, in practice this method must be used with care because it strongly depends on the assumed magnetisation model on large cosmological scales. Our simulations show that the observation of Rotation Measures with $\geq 1-10 ~\rm rad/m^2$ in $\sim 10^2$ Fast Radio Bursts will be able to discriminate between extreme scenarios for the origin of cosmic magnetic fields, independent of the exact distribution of sources with redshift.
