We use multiwavelength data from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) and Herschel ATLAS (H-ATLAS) surveys to compare the relationship between various dust obscuration measures in galaxies. We explore the connections between the ultraviolet (UV) spectral slope, $\beta$, the Balmer decrement, and the far infrared (IR) to $150\,$nm far ultraviolet (FUV) luminosity ratio. We explore trends with galaxy mass, star formation rate (SFR) and redshift in order to identify possible systematics in these various measures. We reiterate the finding of other authors that there is a large scatter between the Balmer decrement and the $\beta$ parameter, and that $\beta$ may be poorly constrained when derived from only two broad passbands in the UV. We also emphasise that FUV derived SFRs, corrected for dust obscuration using $\beta$, will be overestimated unless a modified relation between $\beta$ and the attenuation factor is used. Even in the optimum case, the resulting SFRs have a significant scatter, well over an order of magnitude. While there is a stronger correlation between the IR to FUV luminosity ratio and $\beta$ parameter than with the Balmer decrement, neither of these correlations are particularly tight, and dust corrections based on $\beta$ for high redshift galaxy SFRs must be treated with caution. We conclude with a description of the extent to which the different obscuration measures are consistent with each other as well as the effects of including other galactic properties on these correlations., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 12 pages, 8 figures

We identify and investigate the nature of the 20 brightest 250μm sources detected by the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimetre Telescope (BLAST) within the central 150arcmin2 of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-South field. Aided by the available deep VLA 1.4GHz radio imaging, reaching S1.4 ~= 40μJy (4σ), we have identified radio counterparts for 17/20 of the 250μm sources. The resulting enhanced positional accuracy of ~=1arcsec has then allowed us to exploit the deep optical (Hubble Space Telescope), near-infrared (VLT) and mid-infrared (Spitzer) imaging of GOODS-South to establish secure galaxy counterparts for the 17 radio-identified sources, and plausible galaxy candidates for the three radio-unidentified sources. Confusion is a serious issue for this deep BLAST 250μm survey, due to the large size of the beam. Nevertheless, we argue that our chosen counterparts are significant, and often dominant contributors to the measured BLAST flux densities. For all of these 20 galaxies we have been able to determine spectroscopic (eight) or photometric (12) redshifts. The result is the first near-complete redshift distribution for a deep 250μm-selected galaxy sample. This reveals that 250μm surveys reaching detection limits of ~=40mJy have a median redshift z ~= 1, and contain not only low-redshift spirals/LIRGs, but also the extreme z ~= 2 dust-enshrouded starburst galaxies previously discovered at sub-millimetre wavelengths. Inspection of the LABOCA 870μm imaging of GOODS-South yields detections of ~=1/3 of the proposed BLAST sources (all at z > 1.5), and reveals 250/870μm flux-density ratios consistent with a standard 40K modified blackbody fit with a dust emissivity index β = 1.5. Based on their Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) colours, we find that virtually all of the BLAST galaxy identifications appear better described as analogues of the M82 starburst galaxy, or Sc star-forming discs rather than highly obscured ULIRGs. This is perhaps as expected at low redshift, where the 250μm BLAST selection function is biased towards spectral energy distributions which peak longward of λrest = 100μm. However, it also appears largely true at z ~= 2.

PHOTORESISTORS ,ASTROPHYSICS ,WAVELENGTHS ,ASTRONOMICAL photometry - Abstract
We present the first major data release of the largest single key-project in area carried out in open time with the Herschel Space Observatory. The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) is a survey of 600 deg² in five photometric bands - 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 µm - with the Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) cameras. In this paper and the companion Paper II, we present the survey of three fields on the celestial equator, covering a total area of 161.6 deg² and previously observed in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey. This paper describes the Herschel images and catalogues of the sources detected on the SPIRE 250 µm images. The 1σ noise for source detection, including both confusion and instrumental noise, is 7.4, 9.4 and 10.2 mJy at 250, 350 and 500 µm. Our catalogue includes 120 230 sources in total, with 113 995, 46 209 and 11 011 sources detected at >4σ at 250, 350 and 500 µm. The catalogue contains detections at >3σ at 100 and 160 µm for 4650 and 5685 sources, and the typical noise at these wavelengths is 44 and 49 mJy.We include estimates of the completeness of the survey and of the effects of flux bias and also describe a novel method for determining the true source counts. The H-ATLAS source counts are very similar to the source counts from the deeper HerMES survey at 250 and 350 µm, with a small difference at 500 µm. Appendix A provides a quick start in using the released data sets, including instructions and cautions on how to use them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
