From 0200 to 1000 LST 2 June 2017, the shallow, east–west-oriented mei-yu front (<1 km) cannot move over the Yang-Ming Mountains (with peaks ∼1120 m) when it first arrives. The postfrontal cold air at the surface is deflected by the Yang-Ming Mountains and moves through the Keelung River and Tamsui River valleys into the Taipei basin. The shallow northerly winds are anchored along the northern side of the Yang-Ming Mountains for 8 h. In addition, the southwesterly barrier jet with maximum winds in the 900–950-hPa layer brings in abundant moisture and converges with the northwesterly flow in the southwestern flank of the mei-yu frontal cyclone. Therefore, torrential rain (>600 mm) occurs over the northern side of the Yang-Ming Mountains. From 1100 to 1200 LST, with the gradual deepening of the postfrontal cold air, the front finally passes over the Yang-Ming Mountains and arrives at the Taipei basin, which results in an east–west-oriented rainband with the rainfall maxima over the northwestern coast and Taipei basin. From 1300 to 1400 LST, the frontal rainband continues to move southward with rainfall over the northwestern slopes of the Snow Mountains. In the prefrontal southwesterly flow, the orographic lifting of the moisture-laden low-level winds results in heavy rainfall on the southwestern slopes of the Snow Mountains and the Central Mountain Range. With the terrain of the Yang-Ming Mountains removed in the high-resolution model, the mei-yu front moves quickly southward without a rainfall maximum over the northern tip of Taiwan. Two contrasting localized heavy rainfall events during Taiwan's early summer rainy season with the daily rainfall maximum along the windward mountain range and coast were studied and compared using a combination of observations and numerical simulations. Both events occurred under favorable large-scale settings including the existence of a moisture tongue from the tropics. For the 31 May case, heavy rainfall occurred in the afternoon hours over the southwestern windward slopes after a shallow surface front passed central Taiwan. The orographic lifting of the prevailing warm, moist, west-southwesterly flow aloft, combined with a sea breeze-upslope flow at the surface provided the localized lifting needed for the development of heavy precipitation. On 16 June before sunrise, pronounced orographic blocking of the warm, moist, south-southwesterly flow occurred because of the presence of relatively cold air at low levels as a result of nocturnal and rain evaporative cooling. As a result, convective systems intensified as they moved toward the southwestern coast. During the daytime, the cold pool remained over southwestern Taiwan without the development of onshore/upslope flow. Furthermore, with a south-southwesterly flow aloft parallel to terrain contours, orographic lifting aloft was absent and preexisting rain cells offshore diminished after they moved inland. Over northern Taiwan on the lee side, a sea breeze/onshore flow developed in the afternoon hours, resulting in heavy thundershowers. These results demonstrate the importance of diurnal and local effects on determining the location and timing of the occurrences of localized heavy precipitation during the early summer rainy season over Taiwan. The rainfall regimes of Taiwan are investigated using the 18-yr European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) data (1980-97), the available 38-yr daily rainfall data from 25 conventional surface stations around Taiwan (1961-98), and the 5-yr hourly rainfall data (1994-98) from 249 high-spatial-resolution Automatic Rainfall and Meteorological Telemetry System (ARMTS) stations. Rainfall over the island is usually generated either by transient disturbances embedded in the prevailing monsoon flow or local rainshowers related to terrain or local winds. With the change in the direction of the prevailing winds between the warm and cold seasons as well as a variety of transient subsynoptic disturbances occurring in different seasons (e.g., winter monsoon cold surges, springtime cold fronts, mei-yu fronts in the early summer, typhoons in summer months, and cold fronts in fall) and the presence of the Central Mountain Range, the regional rainfall climate over the island shows large spatial and temporal variabilities. Nevertheless, despite the presence of these transient disturbances, it is shown that the horizontal distributions of climatological rainfall patterns for different rainfall regimes are strongly dependent on the direction of the low-level prevailing flow with much higher rainfall on the windward side. Furthermore, the seasonal variations in rainfall amount and type (light precipitation versus convective precipitation) are also dependent on the thermodynamic stratification and the availability of moisture. Orographic effects on the airflow over Taiwan under the prevailing southwesterly monsoon flow are studied using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU-NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). In particular, the orographically induced low-level strong winds along the northwestern coast of Taiwan are simulated in the absence of radiative forcing, thermal forcing from the surface, and synoptic forcing. The momentum balance for the low-level strong winds along the northwest coast of Taiwan shows that, above the mixed layer, the alongshore force balance is dominated by the inertial advection term and the pressure gradient force term. The significant Lagrangian flow acceleration of the northern branch of the deflected airflow along the northwest coast is mainly related to the pressure gradient force as the airflow moves down the orographically induced pressure ridge along the windward coast. Even though the alongshore pressure gradient force along the northwest coast is largest at the surface, the observed and simulated wind profiles show that the wind speed maximum in the vertical of the barrier jet occurs at a height of ∼ 800 m primarily due to frictional retardation in the lowest levels. Within the well-mixed layer, the alongshore force balance is a three-way balance between inertial advection, pressure gradient force, and frictional force. Normal to the northwest coast, the force balance is approximately geostrophic. In addition, the location and the strength of the orographically induced low-level strong winds along the northwest coast of Taiwan also depend on the impinging angle and the wind speed of the prevailing winds. The role of offshore convergence on the coastal rainfall maximum along the northwestern coast of Taiwan is analyzed based on TAMEX (Taiwan Area Mesoscale Experiment) data and numerical experiments using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU-NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). From a case study during TAMEX IOP 3, moderate rainfalls (~40 mm h[SUP-1]) are observed along the northwestern coast of Taiwan associated with the arrival of three rainbands in succession during 1000-1600 LST These rainbands form over the Taiwan Strait with northeast-southwest or north-south orientation. They intensify off the northwestern coast. There is a tendency for the most intense echoes to align in a northeast-southwest orientation off the northwestern coast. An orographically enhanced convergence zone with a northeast-southwest orientation occurs in the area where the deflected southerly flow converges with the prevailing southwesterly flow that is modified by the storm-induced westerlies immediately behind the convective line. From the numerical experiment with synoptic-scale forcing but without the island topography over Taiwan, a large-scale cloud band is simulated within the Taiwan Strait without the localized rainfall maximum along the northwestern coast. The coastal rainfall maximum is simulated when the influences of the orographic effects are included. The results from the radar analyses and numerical simulations indicate that the convergence off the northwestern coast is a combination of the synoptic-scale forcing, orographic effects, and the feedback of the convection. A barrier jet is frequently found along the northwestern coast of Taiwan in the prefrontal southwesterly flow regime during the Taiwan Area Mesoscale Experiment (TAMEX). It has a maximum wind speed of 14 m s 21 at approximately 1 km above the surface with a vertical wind shear approximately 10 3 10 23 s 21 below and 4 3 10 23 s 21 above that altitude. During TAMEX, the southwesterly monsoon flow strengthens over Taiwan when the low-level pressure trough/surface front moves toward the southeastern China coast. The barrier jet is a result of the stably stratified airflow past an island obstacle under a small--Froude number [,O(1)] flow regime. During the occurrence of a barrier jet, a windward pressure ridge is observed along the southwestern coast due to island blocking. In low levels, the incoming southwesterly flow decelerates off the southwestern coast and moves around the island. Along the western coast, the deflected airflow accelerates northward with a large cross-contour wind component down the pressure gradient along the western coast, resulting in a barrier jet over northwestern Taiwan. A north–south-oriented, multicellular squall line during the Taiwan Area Mesoscale Experiment’s (TAMEX) intensive observation period 2 was studied, using dual-Doppler radar data, as it moved over the island of Taiwan. Over the open ocean, it moved eastward at a constant speed (∼15.5 m s[sup -1] ). As the squall line encountered Taiwan Island’s complex mountainous areas, the leading edge moved slower in the mountain ridge areas than over the valleys. As a result, its orientation became approximately parallel to the terrain contours. In the upper levels, the eastward movement of the squall line aloft was less affected by the terrain compared to the low levels. As a result, the westward tilt of the rising motion at the front became less significant. Part of the system-relative rear-to-front flow entered the rising branch of the storm’s circulation as a result of orographic lifting, as illustrated by the trajectory analysis, and was enhanced by latent heat release. The system-relative rear-to-front flow did not appear to descend to the lowest levels. Furthermore, it is unlikely that the low-level cold pool behind the leading edge would move upslope. When the squall line moved over the higher terrain areas, the midlevel system-relative westerly flow from the rear entered the storm’s updraft. The vertical motion pattern was dominated by orographic lifting and sinking. Low-level system-relative front-to-rear inflow was absent. Weak echo maxima were found, mainly associated with orographic lifting ahead of or near the mountain peaks. These changes occurred within a short time (∼40 min) after the squall line encountered the mountainous terrain. The environmental low-level wind ahead of the squall line exhibited a weak southerly flow west of the mountain ridge areas and a weak southwesterly flow in the valley areas because of island blocking.
