During the three thousand years in which the present music notation system has evolved, numerous notation methods have been considered, each with shortcomings in its ability either to meet the requirements of modern composers or to serve as an instructional system. How does the inclusion of popular music affect school choral groups? Gene Grier gives us an overview and a surprisingly positive report of the situation.

Since MEJ published “Can We Still Sing Christmas Carols in Public Schools?” in its November 1976 issue, we have received many requests to update and expand the information contained in that article. We there fore contacted state music supervisors and various interest groups during June and July 1979 to determine whether any significant new guidelines were being developed on the issue of using sacred music in schools. This article is a report on this survey and not an expression of any official MENC policy or MEJ staff opinions.
