Two new species and a new combination of Hypoxylon from Texas were identified and described based on morphological, multigene phylogenetic (ITS [nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2], 28S [5' 1200 bp of nuc 28S rDNA], RPB2 [partial second largest subunit of the DNA-directed RNA polymerase II], TUB2 [partial β-tubulin ] ), and chemotaxonomic data. Hypoxylon olivaceopigmentum is characterized by its pulvinate to glomerate stromata, olivaceous KOH-extractable pigments, equilateral ascospores, and indehiscent perispore. Hypoxylon texense can be distinguished from morphologically similar species by its rust to dark brick KOH-extractable pigments and the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) profile of its stromatal secondary metabolites. Hypoxylon hinnuleum is proposed as the sexual morph of Nodulisporium hinnuleum , featuring dark vinaceous glomerate stromata with dark brick KOH-extractable pigments composed of cohaerin-type azaphilones and smooth equilateral ascospores with indehiscent perispore. Based on these diagnostic characters, H. hinnuleum forms a complex with H. croceum and H. minicroceum . More than 50 ITS sequences with high identity originating from North American and East Asian environmental isolates formed a well-supported clade with the type of N. hinnuleum , demonstrating the widespread distribution of the species complex. In addition, updated descriptions and comprehensive illustrations with detailed information on the diagnostic features of H. fendleri and H. perforatum are provided. The multilocus phylogenetic reconstruction of Hypoxylon supported the status of the new species and broadened the knowledge about intergeneric relationships.

A novel species of Microdochium was identified as the causal agent of a leaf blight of Poa pratensis (Kentucky blue grass) and Agrostis stolonifera (Creeping bentgrasses), two cold-season turfgrasses widely grown on golf courses in northern China. This disease first appears as small, water-soaked, and scattered leaf spots. Under conditions of high temperatures and successive days of rain, the infected leaves rapidly lose their integrity and large diseased patches appear. Fungal strains were isolated from blighted leaf spots. A phylogenetic analysis based on the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions and 5.8S rRNA gene (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) and parts of the β-tubulin (TUB2) and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) genes strongly supported that these isolates are a distinct evolutionary lineage in Microdochium (Microdochiaceae, Xylariales) that represents a new taxonomic species, herein named as M. poae. Microscopic characters confirmed that these strains were morphologically distinct from known Microdochium species. The pathogenicity of M. poae was confirmed by inoculating spore suspension on both grasses and reisolation of the pathogen from symptomatic tissues. The optimal growth temperature suggests that the occurrence of the new leaf blight disease caused by M. poae was significantly different from the microdochium patch disease caused by M. nivale.

Twenty-five fructicolous and seminicolous species of Xylaria are classified into three groups by stromatal morphology: (i) the X. ianthinovelutina group; (ii) the X. carpophila group; and (iii) the X. heloidea group. Xylaria reevesiae, X. rossmanae, and X. vivantii are described as new species. Xylaria reevesiae belongs to the X. carpophila group, resembling X. euphorbiicola but differing from it mainly by having conspicuous perithecial mounds and growing on fallen fruits of a different host plant. Xylaria rossmanae and X. vivantii belong to the X. ianthinovelutina group. Xylaria rossmanae differs from the species of the group mainly by larger, paler, fusoid-inequilateral ascospores, and X. vivantii differs by larger ascospores with a slightly oblique germ slit. A dichotomous key is provided for identifying the 25 species. Doubtful names are also listed and annotated.

In 2010-2011, a Xylaria sp. was documented growing from seeds of both Chlorocardium rodiei and Chlorocardium venenosum, a commercially valuable timber in Guyana. We conducted extensive surveys in 2015-2016, where this Xylaria sp. was observed fruiting from ca. 80% of dispersed seeds in both natural and logged forests in the Upper Demerara-Berbice, Potaro-Siparuni, and the Cuyuni-Mazaruni districts of central Guyana. Species of Xylaria are ascomycetous fungi generally characterized by black, carbonaceous, multiperitheciate ascoma commonly found growing on dead wood. Combined teleomorphic and molecular data indicate that the fungus represents a novel species, described here as Xylaria karyophthora.

This study investigates the diversity and taxonomy of Cryptosphaeria species occurring in the western United States on the basis of morphological characters and multilocus phylogenetic analyses of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, parts of a β-tubulin gene, the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II second-largest subunit gene and the nuclear ribosomal large subunit gene. Cryptosphaeria multicontinentalis sp. nov is described from the Sierra Nevada and central coast of California on Populus tremuloides, P. balsamifera subsp. trichocarpa and P. fremontii. Cryptosphaeria pullmanensis is reported from a wide geographic area in the western United States on the main host, P. fremontii. The pathogen C. lignyota is reported for the first time from the Sierra Nevada of California on P. tremuloides. The phylogenetic analyses showed that C. multicontinentalis is a sister species to C. lignyota. Both species were closely related to C. subcutanea and more distantly related to C. pullmanensis. Phylogenetic analyses based on a broad taxonomic sampling of Ascotricha were conducted using the sequences of nuc rDNA region encompassing the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2, along with the 5.8S rDNA (ITS), partial nuc 18S rDNA (18S) and partial β-tubulin gene (TUB2). Hypoxyloid Xylariaceae and xylarioid Xylariaceae were inferred as two distinct lineages in the Xylariaceae in the combined ITS-TUB2 phylogeny. Within xylarioid Xylariaceae species of Ascotricha form a monophyletic group. Two new marine algae-associated fungi, Ascotricha longipila and A. parvispora, are described on the basis of morphological and molecular characters and the combination, A. sinuosa, is proposed. A new species of Microdochium was identified as the causal agent of leaf blight of seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum), a turf grass widely used in tropical and subtropical golf courses. In 2010 foliar necrosis and canopy thinning were observed on 11 surveyed golf courses in Hainan province, China, especially on fairways and putting greens. The infected leaves initially appeared water-soaked and dark green, rapidly faded to yellow or became chlorotic and quickly died, resulting in a sparse appearance in infected areas, leading to the disease name "sparse leaf patch." Isolates with rich and light pink to yellow mycelia and salmon-colored pionnotes were cultured from diseased turf foliage. Pathogenicity was demonstrated by inoculating these isolates onto "seaspray" seashore paspalum. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer 1-5.8S-internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) and β-tubulin (BenA) indicated these isolates formed as a distinct clade within Microdochium (Xylariales). Further microscopic examination demonstrated that the species was morphologically distinct from three similar species of Microdochium. Six penzigioid Xylaria species that are characterized by small, discoid to pulvinate, soft stromata are included in this study. Xylaria albocinctoides, X. bicampaniformis and X. lechatii are described as new; Nummularia albocincta, Hypoxylon carabayense and H. discolor are moved to the genus Xylaria to form new combinations X. albocincta, X. carabayensis and X. discolor respectively. An identification key is provided for the major aggregates of Xylaria that harbor penzigioid species as well as the species of the X. frustulosa aggregate, to which the six studied penzigioid Xylaria species belong.

The species known in China as the chicken-claw fungus is described as a new species, Xylaria coprinicola. This species is known as an antagonist of cultivation of the edible mushroom Coprinus comatus. Stromata of X. coprinicola are cylindrical, terminate in a sterile apex and arise in fascicles from a relative large submerged base; perithecia are immersed and have conspicuously conical ostiolar openings; ascospores are minute. Phylogenetic analyses based on combined partial sequences of rpb2, β-tub and α-act genes showed that X. coprinicola is closely related to those Xylaria species exclusively associated with termite nests.

Morphological and molecular analyses demonstrate that Coniolariella gamsii and Coniolaria murandii are distinct species. The latter species is validated here as Coniolariella macrothecia. A key to the five species of the genus is provided.

A marine xylarialean fungus, isolated from roots of Rhizophora (mangrove) in Australia, displays morphology of eight ellipsoidal dark brown ascospores in a cylindrical ascus having a refractive apical apparatus. Each ascospore has a longitudinal germ slit. The fungus grew very slowly and produced dark brown water-soluble pigment(s) on various media. It developed unique, column-shaped, indeterminate synnemata on which needle-shaped conidia were produced. The sexual stage of this fungus was not observed under the laboratory conditions tested. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the combined sequences of nuclear ribosomal RNA genes and their internal transcribed spacers placed it at a basal position in the clade of Diatrypaceae of the Xylariales with comparatively high statistical support. However the morphological features and phylogenetic position of this organism do not closely resemble any known fungal taxa. Therefore this fungus is proposed to be a representative of a novel taxon and described as Diatrypasimilis australiensis gen. et sp. nov.

Studies have revealed that some Xylaria species were closely associated with fungus-growing termite nests. However this relationship rarely had been investigated and the host specificity of termite-associated Xylaria was not yet clearly established. Eighteen Xylaria rDNA-ITS sequences were obtained from fungus combs belonging to 11 Macrotermitinae species from eight regions. Low diversity was found between isolates, and nine sequences were retrieved. Termite-associated Xylaria were shown to be monophyletic, with three main clades, all including strains from various termite hosts and geographical localities. This new molecular study shows no species specificity with respect to fungus-growing termites, which suggests that there might be substrate specialization.

Nine species of Xylaria were collected in Taiwan from nests of Odontotermes formosanus, the only known macrotermitine termite in Taiwan. These include six newly described species, X. acuminatilongissima, X. atrodivaricata, X. brunneovinosa, X. griseosepiacea, X. intraflava and X. ochraceostroma, and three previously known species, X. cirrata, X. escharoidea and X. nigripes. We obtained cultures and ITS sequences from the nine species found in Taiwan and describe anamorphs for eight of them. Before the current study teleomorph-anamorph connections in the Xylaria species associated with termite nests have been established unequivocally in X. escharoidea only. Xylaria angulosa, X. fimbriata, X. kedahae, X. micrura, X. radicans, X. reinkingii and X. tolosa also are considered and annotated because they were reported to grow on ground and likely are associated with termite nests. Epitypifications are made for X. cirrata, X. escharoidea and X. nigripes. Xylaria sanchezii is considered a nomen dubium. Photographs are presented for most of the aforementioned species. A dichotomous key to 25 Xylaria species growing on termite nests or ground also is given.

Morphological and molecular studies led to the description of Microdochium triticicola as new species isolated from roots of wheat in the United Kingdom. The morphological features of all known Microdochium species are tabulated.

A new Rosellinia species, R. capetribulensis isolated from Calamus sp. in Australia is described. R. capetribulensis is characterized by perithecia immersed within a carbonaceous stroma surrounded by subiculum-like hyphae, asci with large, barrel-shaped amyloid apical apparatus and large dark brown spores. Morphologically, R. capetribulensis appears to be similar to R. bunodes, R. markhamiae and R. megalospora. To gain further insights into the phylogeny of this new taxon we analyzed the ITS-5.8S rDNA using maximum parsimony and likelihood methods. In addition, a morphological dataset also was analyzed phylogenetically to investigate possible affinities. ITS rDNA based phylogenies reveal that R. capetribulensis is closely related to other Rosellinia species showing closest affinity to R. arcuata, RL necatrix and R. pepo. However, analysis of R. capetribulensis forms an unsupported branch sister to these taxa. Results from the morphological matrix indicate a close morphological affinity to members of Rosellinia subgenus Rosellinia. Despite that ITS rDNA and morphological analyses present difficulties in constructing a proper phylogenetic framework among Rosellinia and allied genera, there is sufficient evidence to support the establishment of the new taxon in the genus Rosellinia. The morphological similarities and differences between R. capetribulensis and allied genera such as Astrocystis and Entoleuca are also briefly discussed.

Xylaria arenicola, X. brasiliensis, X. escharoidea, X. furcata, X. nigripes, X. piperiformis and X. rhizomorpha represent ancient names of fungi known to inhabit abandoned termite nests. We attempt to redescribe them and to reduce the confusion among them. Xylaria tanganyikaensis and X. readeri, species that might be associated with termite nests, are described. We describe a new variety, X. furcata var. hirsuta, and discuss an unnamed fungus that probably represents a new species. Photographs and a key are presented to aid the identification of these taxa.

Six xylariaceous fungi, including two Hypoxylon taxa and four Nemania taxa, are described as new. They were collected from either Costa Rica or Taiwan. Two of the Nemania species--N. flavitextura and N. primolutea--were cultured and typical Geniculosporium anamorphs were produced.
