Rare earth elements (REEs) are widely used in high-tech industries, and REE waste emissions have become a concern for ecosystems, food quality and human beings. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have repeatedly been reported to alleviate plant stress in metal-contaminated soils. To date, little information is available concerning the role of AMF in REE-contaminated soils. We recently showed that there was no transfer of Sm to alfalfa by Funneliformis mosseae, but only a single REE was examined, while light and heavy REEs are present in contaminated soils. To understand the role of AMF on the transfer of REEs to plants, we carried out an experiment using alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in compartmented pots with separate bottom compartments that only were accessible by F. mosseae fungal hyphae. The bottom compartments contained a mixture of four REEs at equal concentrations (La, Ce, Sm and Yb). The concentration of REEs in plants was higher in roots than in shoots with higher REE soil-root than root-shoot transfer factors. Moreover, significantly higher light-REEs La and Ce were transferred to ryegrass shoots than Sm and the heavy-REE Yb, but this was not observed for alfalfa. Alfalfa dry weight was significantly increased by F. mosseae inoculation, but not ryegrass dry weight. For both plant species, there was significantly higher P uptake by the mycorrhizal plants than the nonmycorrhizal plants, but there was no significant transfer of La, Ce, Sm or Yb to alfalfa and ryegrass roots or shoots due to F. mosseae inoculation.

International audience; The presence of dark septate endophytes (DSEs) or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in plant roots and their effects on plant fitness have been extensively described. However, little is known about their interactions when they are simultaneously colonizing a plant root, especially in trace element (TE)-polluted soils. We therefore investigated the effects of Cadophora sp. and Funneliformis mosseae on ryegrass (Lolium perenne) growth and element uptake in a Cd/Zn/Pb-polluted soil. The experiment included four treatments, i.e., inoculation with Cadophora sp., inoculation with F. mosseae, co-inoculation with Cadophora sp. and F. mosseae, and no inoculation. Ryegrass biomass and shoot Na, P, K, and Mg concentrations significantly increased following AMF inoculation as compared to non-inoculated controls. Similarly, DSE inoculation increased shoot Na concentration, whereas dual inoculation significantly decreased shoot Cd concentration. Moreover, oxidative stress determined by ryegrass leaf malondialdehyde concentration was alleviated both in the AMF and dual inoculation treatments. We used quantitative PCR and microscope observations to quantify colonization rates. They demonstrated that DSEs had no effect on AMF colonization, while AMF colonization slightly decreased DSE frequency. We also monitored fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis and alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity in the rhizosphere soils. FDA hydrolysis remained unchanged in the three inoculated treatments, but AMF colonization increased AP activity and P mobility in the soil whereas DSE colonization did not alter AP activity. In this experiment, we unveiled the interactions between two ecologically important fungal groups likely to occur in roots which involved a decrease of oxidative stress and Cd accumulation in shoots. These results open promising perspectives on the fungal-based phytomanagement of TE-contaminated sites by the production of uncontaminated and marketable plant biomass.

Interactions between the plant and its microbial communities in the rhizosphere control microbial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) biodegradation processes. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can influence plant survival and PAH degradation in polluted soil. This work was aimed at studying the contribution of the mycorrhizosphere to PAH biodegradation in the presence of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L., cv. Barclay) inoculated with Glomus mosseae (BEG 69) by taking into account the structure and activity of bacterial communities, PAH degrading culturable bacteria as a function of the distance from roots. Ryegrass was grown in compartmentalized systems designed to harvest successive sections of rhizosphere in lateral compartments polluted or not with phenanthrene (PHE). Colonization of roots by G. mosseae (BEG 69) modified the structure and density of bacterial populations in the mycorrhizosphere, compared to the rhizosphere of non-mycorrhizal plants. G. mosseae increased the density of culturable heterotrophic and PAH degrading bacteria beyond the immediate rhizosphere in the presence of PHE, and increased the density of PAH degraders in the absence of the pollutant. Biodegradation was not significantly increased in the mycorrhizosphere, compared to control non-mycorrhizal plants, where PHE biodegradation already reached 92% after 6 weeks. However, dioxygenase transcriptional activity was found to be higher in the immediate mycorrhizosphere in the presence of G. mosseae (BEG 69).

The effect of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) on white clover and ryegrass grown together in a soil spiked with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was assessed in a pot experiment. The soil was spiked with 500 mg kg–1 anthracene, 500 mg kg–1 chrysene and 50 mg kg–1 dibenz(a,h)anthracene, representing common PAH compounds with three, four and five aromatic rings, respectively. Three treatments and two harvest times (8 and 16 weeks) were imposed on plants grown in spiked soil: no mycorrhizal inoculation, mycorrhizal inoculation (Glomus mosseae P2, BEG 69) and mycorrhizal inoculation and surfactant addition (Triton X-100). Pots without PAH were also included as a control of plant growth and mycorrhizal colonization as affected by PAH additions. The competitive ability of clover vis-a-vis ryegrass regarding shoot and root growth was enhanced by AM, but reduced by PAH and the added surfactant. This was reflected by mycorrhizal root colonization which was moderate for clover (20–40% of total root length) and very low for ryegrass (0.5–5% of total root length). Colonization of either plant was similar in spiked soil with and without the added surfactant, but the PAH reduced colonization of clover to half that in non-spiked soil. P uptake was maintained in mycorrhizal clover when PAH were added, but was reduced in non-mycorrhizal clover and in mycorrhizal clover that received surfactant. Similar effects were not observed on ryegrass. These results are discussed in the context of the natural attenuation of organic pollutants in soils.

The ability of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi from a metal-tolerant plant (Viola calaminaria, violet) to colonise and reduce metal uptake by a non-tolerant plant (Trifolium subterraneum, subterranean clover) in comparison to a metal-tolerant AM fungus isolated from a non-tolerant plant was studied. AM spores from the violet rhizosphere and from violet roots were characterised by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the SSU rDNA, and sequencing. Subterranean clover was grown in pots containing a soil supplemented with Cd and Zn salts and inoculated either with a mixture of spores extracted from the violet rhizosphere or with spores of a Cd-tolerant Glomus mosseae P2 (BEG 69), or non-inoculated. The diversity of fungi, including AM fungi, colonising clover roots was assessed and analysed using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. At least four different Glomus species were found in the violet rhizosphere. After 8 weeks in a growth chamber, colonisation of clover roots with spores from the violet rhizosphere increased Cd and Zn concentrations in clover roots without significantly affecting the concentrations of metals in the shoot and plant growth. G. mosseae P2 reduced plant growth and slightly increased the Cd concentration. Only one AM fungus (Glomus b) from the violet rhizosphere colonised clover roots, but other fungi were present. AM fungi from heavy metal-contaminated soils and associated with metal-tolerant plants may be effective in accumulating heavy metals in roots in a non-toxic form.

High concentrations of heavy metals in soil have an adverse effect on micro-organisms and microbial processes. Among soil microorganisms, mycorrhizal fungi are the only ones providing a direct link between soil and roots, and can therefore be of great importance in heavy metal availability and toxicity to plants. This review discusses various aspects of the interactions between heavy metals and mycorrhizal fungi, including the effects of heavy metals on the occurrence of mycorrhizal fungi, heavy metal tolerance in these micro-organisms, and their effect on metal uptake and transfer to plants. Mechanisms involved in metal tolerance, uptake and accumulation by mycorrhizal hyphae and by endo- or ectomycorrhizae are covered. The possible use of mycorrhizal fungi as bioremediation agents in polluted soils or as bioindicators of pollution is also discussed.

In two pot-culture experiments with maize in a silty loam (P2 soil) contaminated by atmospheric deposition from a metal smelter, root colonization with indigenous or introduced arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and their influence on plant metal uptake (Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Mn) were investigated. Soil was γ-irradiated for the nonmycorrhizal control. In experiment 1, nonirradiated soil provided the mycorrhizal treatment, whereas in experiment 2 the irradiated soil was inoculated with spores of a fungal culture from P2 soil or a laboratory reference culture, Glomus mosseae. Light intensity was considerably higher in experiment 2 and resulted in a fourfold higher shoot and tenfold higher root biomass. Under the conditions of experiment 1, biomass was significantly higher and Cd, Cu, Zn and Mn concentrations significantly lower in the mycorrhizal plants than in the nonmycorrhizal plants, suggesting a protection against metal toxicity. In contrast, in experiment 2, biomass did not differ between treatments and only Cu root concentration was decreased with G. mosseae-inoculated plants, whereas Cu shoot concentration was significantly increased with the indigenous P2 fungal culture. The latter achieved a significantly higher root colonization than G. mosseae (31.7 and 19.1%, respectively) suggesting its higher metal tolerance. Zn shoot concentration was higher in both mycorrhizal treatments and Pb concentrations, particularly in the roots, also tended to increase with mycorrhizal colonization. Cd concentrations were not altered between treatments. Cu and Zn, but not Pb and Cd root-shoot translocation increased with mycorrhizal colonization. The results show that the influence of AM on plant metal uptake depends on plant growth conditions, on the fungal partner and on the metal, and cannot be generalized. It is suggested that metal-tolerant mycorrhizal inoculants might be considered for soil reclamation, since under adverse conditions AM may be more important for plant metal resistance. Under the optimized conditions of normal agricultural practice, however, AM colonization even may increase plant metal absorption from polluted soils.

Toxic metal accumulation in soils of agricultural interest is a serious problem needing more attention, and investigations on soil-plant metal transfer must be pursued to better understand the processes involved in metal uptake. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are known to influence metal transfer in plants by increasing plant biomass and reducing metal toxicity to plants even if diverging results were reported. The effects of five AM fungi isolated from metal contaminated or non-contaminated soils on metal (Cd, Zn) uptake by plant and transfer to leachates was assessed with Medicago truncatula grown in a multimetallic contaminated agricultural soil. Fungi isolated from metal-contaminated soils were more effective to reduce shoot Cd concentration. Metal uptake capacity differed between AM fungi and depended on the origin of the isolate. Not only fungal tolerance and ability to reduce metal concentrations in plant but also interactions with rhizobacteria affected heavy metal transfer and plant growth. Indeed, thanks to association with nodulating rhizobacteria, one Glomus intraradices inoculum increased particularly plant biomass which allowed exporting twofold more Cd and Zn in shoots as compared to non-mycorrhizal treatment. Cd concentrations in leachates were variable among fungal treatments, but can be significantly influenced by AM inoculation. The differential strategies of AM fungal colonisation in metal stress conditions are also discussed.

The congress MYCOMED was held from 11 to 13 October 2010 in Marrakesh, Morocco, and organised by Prof. M. Hafidi (University Cadi Ayyad of Marrakesh) and Dr. R. Duponnois (IRD, LSTM, Montpellier). It brought together 180 participants from 22 countries with the aim to present recent results and concepts concerning the expected benefits of mycorrhizal symbiosis for the conservation of Mediterranean endemic plant diversity and for the rehabilitation of degraded soils (e.g. mining sites). Below, we present a synthesis of the scientific content and perspectives for further development in the research area. Oral presentations (53) and posters (61) were organised into three sessions devoted to: mycorrhizal symbiosis and performance of the ecoand agro systems, mycorrhizal symbiosis and rehabilitation of soils, and biotechnology of mycorrhizal inoculations and their applications. In the opening lecture, Thierry Gauquelin addressed the question What are Mediterranean ecosystems and environments? He presented the complexity, limits, and characteristics of the Mediterranean region, giving the framework of this congress. In Mediterranean countries, performances of ecoand agro systems largely depend on plant-associated microorganisms because of their role in plant adaptation to environmental stresses such as drought, high disturbance, poor soils, etc. The first session on Mycorrhizal symbiosis and performance of the ecoand agro systems was opened by a lecture from Jean Garbaye highlighting long-term consequences of human activities on diversity and functioning of ectomycorrhizal species. This was followed by a presentation illustrating the complexity of Acacia taxonomy with regard to the diversity of their microbial symbioses (nitrogen-fixing nodules, arbuscular mycorrhiza, ectomycorrhiza) and communications showing how the mycorrhizal symbiosis may influence structural and functional diversity of soil microflora, particularly mycorrhizospheric bacterial populations. A full understanding of the impact of complex interactions between soil microorganisms on ecosystem organization is still a long way off, but research is actively contributing. Another 16 talks about diverse ecosystems in Mediterranean and Sahelian regions focused on the possible role of mycorrhizae in positive effects of shrub on high-altitude tree species establishment, the importance of ectomycorrhizal fungi in plant management and adaptation to particular soil conditions, new ways of land management aimed at enhancing edible Boletus and Terfez production, arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation of crops, mycorrhizal fungal population density D.
