Abstract

We synthesized freestanding bulkthree-dimensional nanoporous Siusing dealloying in a metallic melt, a top-down process. Using thisnanoporous Si, we fabricated negative electrodes with high lithiumcapacity, nearing their theoretical limits, and greatly extended cyclelifetimes, considerably improving the battery performance comparedwith those using electrodes made from silicon nanoparticles. By operatingthe electrodes below the accommodation volume limit of their pores,we prolonged their cycle lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
