The replication of nano-patterns is a significant means of nanomanufacturing. However, there is still a dearth of nano-replication methods that meet the requirements of both high precision and low cost. Therefore, a new strategy to achieve the replication of nano-patterns, namely centrifugal-force-driven nano-replication (CFDNR), is proposed here. An easily obtained centrifugal force which is perpendicular to the plane of a nanostructured template is designed as a driving power, to compel the dynamic polymer to fully fill the space of the template; then, the nano-pattern can be replicated on a polymer film. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates with nanohole periods of ~450 nm and ~100 nm were employed as the original masters to investigate the nano-replication behaviors. The results of morphology measurements demonstrate excellent precision. The size deviations between the nanohole in the template and the nanopillar on the polymer film are less than 4%. Furthermore, a vacuum-assisted CFDNR scheme is proposed to prevent the formation of cavitation on the polymer replica. In this work, we demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally, a hybrid dielectric-plasmonic multifunctional structure able to provide full control of the emission properties of CsPbI3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). The device consists of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) composed of alternating thin metal (Ag) and dielectric (LiF) layers, covered by TiO2 spherical MIE nanoresonators (i.e., the nanoantenna). An optimum HMM leads to a certain Purcell effect, i.e., an increase in the exciton radiative rate, but the emission intensity is reduced due to the presence of metal in the HMM. The incorporation of TiO2 nanoresonators deposited on the top of the HMM is able to counteract such an undesirable intensity reduction by the coupling between the exciton and the MIE modes of the dielectric nanoantenna. More importantly, MIE nanoresonators result in a preferential light emission towards the normal direction to the HMM plane, increasing the collected signal by more than one order of magnitude together with a further increase in the Purcell factor. These results will be useful in quantum information applications involving single emitters based on PNCs together with a high exciton emission rate and intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermochromic vanadium dioxide (VO2)-based smart radiator devices (SRDs) display emittance variation with changes in temperature, making them very promising for energy-efficient thermal control of spacecrafts in general, and nanosatellites in particular. However, the high solar absorptance of the VO2-based SRDs remains too high for their intended application. Based on an approach combining optical simulation and experimental work, I demonstrate that an additional top stack layer alternating between high and low refractive indices made of a-Si(25 nm)/SiO2(67 nm) reduces the solar absorptance of a VO2-based SRD by 35% (from 0.43 to 0.28) while keeping the emittance performance of the SRD within the requirements for the intended application (low-temperature emittance ε L = 0.35, high-temperature emittance ε H = 0.81 and emittance tuneability with temperature Δ ε = 0.46). I also discuss factors to consider while designing additional top stack layers alternating between high and low refractive indices to further decrease the SRD's solar absorptance without affecting its emittance performance. Strain engineering is a promising and fascinating approach to tailoring the electrical and optical properties of 2D materials, which is of great importance for fabricating excellent nano-devices. Although previous theoretical works have proved that the monolayer tellurene has desirable mechanical properties with the capability of withstanding large deformation and the tunable band gap and mobility conductance induced by in-plane strain, the effects of in-plane and out-of-plane strains on the properties of few-layer tellurene in different phases should be explored deeply. In this paper, calculations based on first-principles density functional theory were performed to predict the variation in crystal structures and electronic properties of few-layer tellurene, including the α and β phases. The analyses of mechanical properties show that few-layer α-Te can be more easily deformed in the armchair direction than β-Te owing to its lower Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. The α-Te can be converted to β-Te by in-plane compressive strain. The variations in band structures indicate that the uniaxial strain can tune the band structures and even induce the semiconductor-to-metal transition in both few-layer α-Te and β-Te. Moreover, the compressive strain in the zigzag direction is the most feasible scheme due to the lower transition strain. In addition, few-layer β-Te is more easily converted to metal especially for the thicker flakes considering its smaller band gap. Hence, the strain-induced tunable electronic properties and semiconductor-to-metal transition of tellurene provide a theoretical foundation for fabricating metal–semiconductor junctions and corresponding nano-devices. MoS2/C nanocomposite coatings were deposited on a 304 stainless steel plate by unbalanced magnetron sputtering from carbon and molybdenum disulfide targets, and the target current of MoS2 was varied to prepare for coating with different carbon contents. The mechanical and tribological properties of the MoS2/C nanocomposite coating with different carbon contents were studied using a low-velocity impact wear machine based on kinetic energy control, and the substrate was used as the comparison material. The atomic content ratio of Mo to S in the MoS2/C coating prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering was approximately 1.3. The dynamic response and damage analysis revealed that the coating exhibited good impact wear resistance. Under the same experimental conditions, the wear depth of the MoS2/C coating was lower than that of the substrate, and the coating exhibited a different dynamic response process as the carbon content increased. Optically transparent polyimide (PI) films with good dielectric properties and long-term sustainability in atomic-oxygen (AO) environments have been highly desired as antenna substrates in low earth orbit (LEO) aerospace applications. However, PI substrates with low dielectric constant (low-Dk), low dielectric dissipation factor (low-Df) and high AO resistance have rarely been reported due to the difficulties in achieving both high AO survivability and good dielectric parameters simultaneously. In the present work, an intrinsically low-Dk and low-Df optically transparent PI film matrix, poly[4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride-co-2,2-bis(4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl)hexafluoropropane] (6FPI) was combined with a nanocage trisilanolphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (TSP-POSS) additive in order to afford novel organic–inorganic nanocomposite films with enhanced AO-resistant properties and reduced dielectric parameters. The derived 6FPI/POSS films exhibited the Dk and Df values as low as 2.52 and 0.006 at the frequency of 1 MHz, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite films showed good AO resistance with the erosion yield as low as 4.0 × 10−25 cm3/atom at the exposure flux of 4.02 × 1020 atom/cm2, which decreased by nearly one order of magnitude compared with the value of 3.0 × 10−24 cm3/atom of the standard PI-ref Kapton® film. In this study, single groove nanoscratch experiments using a friction force microscope (FFM) with a monocrystalline diamond tip were conducted on a c-plane sapphire wafer to analyze the ductile-regime removal and deformation mechanism including the anisotropy. Various characteristics, such as scratch force, depth, and specific energy for each representative scratch direction on the c-plane of sapphire, were manifested by the FFM, and the results of the specific scratch energy showed a trend of six-fold symmetry on taking lower values than those of the other scratch directions when the scratch directions correspond to the basal slip directions as 0001 〈 11 2 ¯ 0 〉 . Since this can be due to the effect of most probably basal slip or less probably basal twinning on the c-plane, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of zinc, which is one of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystals with similar slip/twining systems, was attempted to clarify the phenomena. The comparison results between the nanoscratch experiment and the MD simulation revealed that both the specific scratch energy and the burr height were minimized when scratched in the direction of the basal slip. Therefore, it was found that both the machining efficiency and the accuracy could be improved by scratching in the direction of the basal slip in the single groove nanoscratch of c-plane sapphire. Facing the increasing demand for various renewable energy storage devices and wearable and portable energy storage systems, the research on electrode materials with low costs and high energy densities has attracted great attention. Herein, free-standing rGO-CNT nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, in which the hierarchical porous network nanostructure is synergistically assembled by rGO nanosheets and CNT with interlaced network distribution. The rGO-CNT composite electrodes with synergistic enhancement of rGO and CNT exhibit high specific capacitance, excellent rate capability, exceptional conductivity and outstanding long-term cycling stability, especially for the optimal rGO-CNT30 electrode. Applied to a symmetric supercapacitor systems (SSS) assembled with an rGO-CNT30 electrode and with 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution as the electrolyte, the SSS possesses a high energy density of 12.29 W h kg−1 and an outstanding cycling stability, with 91.42% of initial specific capacitance after 18,000 cycles. Results from these electrochemical properties suggest that the rGO-CNT30 nanocomposite electrode is a promising candidate for the development of flexible and lightweight high-performance supercapacitors. When nanoimprint serves as a lithography process, it is most attractive for the ability to overcome the typical residual layer remaining without the need for etching. Then, 'partial cavity filling' is an efficient strategy to provide a negligible residual layer. However, this strategy requires an adequate choice of the initial layer thickness to work without defects. To promote the application of this strategy we provide a 'guiding chart' for initial layer choice. Due to volume conservation of the imprint polymer this guiding chart has to consider the geometric parameters of the stamp, where the polymer fills the cavities only up to a certain height, building a meniscus at its top. Furthermore, defects that may develop during the imprint due to some instability of the polymer within the cavity have to be avoided; with nanoimprint, the main instabilities are caused by van der Waals forces, temperature gradients, and electrostatic fields. Moreover, practical aspects such as a minimum polymer height required for a subsequent etching of the substrate come into play. With periodic stamp structures the guiding chart provided will indicate a window for defect-free processing considering all these limitations. As some of the relevant factors are system-specific, the user has to construct his own guiding chart in praxis, tailor-made to his particular imprint situation. To facilitate this task, all theoretical results required are presented in a graphical form, so that the quantities required can simply be read from these graphs. By means of examples, the implications of the guiding chart with respect to the choice of the initial layer are discussed with typical imprint scenarios, nanoimprint at room temperature, at elevated temperature, and under electrostatic forces. Polymeric nanomaterials that degrade in acidic environments have gained considerable attention in nanomedicine for intracellular drug delivery and cancer therapy. Among various acid-degradable linkages, spirocyclic acetals have rarely been used to fabricate such vehicles. In addition to acid sensitivity, they benefit from conformational rigidity that is otherwise not attainable by their non-spirocyclic analogs. Herein, amphiphilic spirocyclic polyacetals are synthesized by Cu-catalyzed alkyne–azide "click" polymerization. Unlike conventional block copolymers, which often form core–shell structures, these polymers self-assemble to form core amphiphilic assemblies capable of encapsulating Nile red as a hydrophobic model drug. In vitro experiments show that while release from these materials can occur at neutral pH with preservation of their integrity, acidic pH accelerates efficient cargo release and leads to the complete degradation of assemblies. Moreover, cellular assays reveal that these materials are fully cytocompatible, interact with the plasma membrane, and can be internalized by cells, rendering them as potential candidates for cancer therapy and/or drug delivery. Chemoinformatics has developed efficient ways of representing chemical structures for small molecules as simple text strings, simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) and the IUPAC International Chemical Identifier (InChI), which are machine-readable. In particular, InChIs have been extended to encode formalized representations of mixtures and reactions, and work is ongoing to represent polymers and other macromolecules in this way. The next frontier is encoding the multi-component structures of nanomaterials (NMs) in a machine-readable format to enable linking of datasets for nanoinformatics and regulatory applications. A workshop organized by the H2020 research infrastructure NanoCommons and the nanoinformatics project NanoSolveIT analyzed issues involved in developing an InChI for NMs (NInChI). The layers needed to capture NM structures include but are not limited to: core composition (possibly multi-layered); surface topography; surface coatings or functionalization; doping with other chemicals; and representation of impurities. NM distributions (size, shape, composition, surface properties, etc.), types of chemical linkages connecting surface functionalization and coating molecules to the core, and various crystallographic forms exhibited by NMs also need to be considered. Six case studies were conducted to elucidate requirements for unambiguous description of NMs. The suggested NInChI layers are intended to stimulate further analysis that will lead to the first version of a "nano" extension to the InChI standard. The high drug loading capacity, cytocompatibility and easy functionalization of ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) make them attractive nanocarriers to treat several pathologies. OMCs' efficiency could be further increased by embedding them into a hydrogel phase for an in loco prolonged drug release. In this work, OMCs were embedded into injectable thermosensitive hydrogels. In detail, rod-like (diameter ca. 250 nm, length ca. 700 nm) and spherical (diameter approximately 120 nm) OMCs were synthesized by nanocasting selected templates and loaded with ibuprofen through a melt infiltration method to achieve complete filling of their pores (100% loading yield). In parallel, an amphiphilic Poloxamer® 407-based poly(ether urethane) was synthesized ( M n ¯ 72 kDa) and solubilized at 15 and 20% w/v concentration in saline solution to design thermosensitive hydrogels. OMC incorporation into the hydrogels (10 mg/mL concentration) did not negatively affect their gelation potential. Hybrid systems successfully released ibuprofen at a slower rate compared to control gels (gels embedding ibuprofen as such), but with no significant differences between rod-like and spherical OMC-loaded gels. OMCs can thus work as effective drug reservoirs that progressively release their payload over time and also upon encapsulation in a hydrogel phase, thus opening the way to their application to treat many different pathological states (e.g., as topical medications). Graphene-based van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction plays an important role in next-generation optoelectronics, nanoelectronics, and spintronics devices. The tunability of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) is beneficial for improving device performance, especially for the contact resistance. Herein, we investigated the electronic structure and interfacial characteristics of the graphene/AlN interface based on density functional theory. The results show that the intrinsic electronic properties of graphene changed slightly after contact. In contrast, the valence band maximum of AlN changed significantly due to the hybridization of Cp and Np orbital electrons. The Bader charge analysis showed that the electrons would transfer from AlN to graphene, implying that graphene would induce acceptor states. Additionally, the Schottky contact nature can be effectively tuned by the external electric field, and it will be tuned from the p-type into n-type once the electric field is larger than about 0.5 V/Å. Furthermore, the optical absorption of graphene/AlN is enhanced after contact. Our findings imply that the SBH is controllable, which is highly desirable in nano-electronic devices. How the environment contributes to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's is not well understood. In recent years, science has found augmenting evidence that nano-sized particles generated by transport (e.g., fuel combustion, tire wear and brake wear) may promote Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals residing close to busy roads are at higher risk of developing AD, and nanomaterials that are specifically generated by traffic-related processes have been detected in human brains. Since AD represents a neurodegenerative disease characterized by amyloid protein aggregation, this review summarizes our current knowledge on the amyloid-generating propensity of traffic-related nanomaterials. Certain nanoparticles induce the amyloid aggregation of otherwise soluble proteins in in vitro laboratory settings, cultured neuronal cells and vertebrate or invertebrate animal models. We discuss the challenges for future studies, namely, strategies to connect the wet laboratory with the epidemiological data in order to elucidate the molecular bio-interactions of airborne nanomaterials and their effects on human health. Manipulating the light emission direction and boosting its directivity have essential importance in integrated nanophotonic devices. Here, we theoretically propose a single dielectric silicon nanoblock as an efficient, multifunctional and ultracompact all-dielectric nanoantenna to direct light into a preferential direction. Unidirectional scattering of a plane wave as well as switchable directive emission fed by a localized emitter are demonstrated within the nanoantenna. The high directionalities are revealed to originate from a variety of mechanisms that can coexist within a single nanoblock, which contribute to the far-field radiation patterns of the outcoming light, thanks to the wealth of multipolar electric and magnetic resonances. The efficient beam redirections are also observed, which are sensitive to the local configurations of the emitter antenna coupled system. The designed antenna, with extreme geometry simplicity, ultracompact and low-loss features, could be favorable for highly sensitive sensing as well as applications in optical nanocircuits. It is essential to build multiaxis oriented nanocellulose films in the plane for developing thermal or optical management films. However, using conventional orientation techniques, it is difficult to align nanocelluloses in multiple directions within the plane of single films rather than in the thickness direction like the chiral nematic structure. In this study, we developed the liquid-phase three-dimensional (3D) patterning technique by combining wet spinning and 3D printing. Using this technique, we produced a checkered film with multiaxis oriented nanocelluloses. This film showed similar retardation levels, but with orthogonal molecular axis orientations in each checkered domain as programmed. The thermal transport was enhanced in the domain with the oriented pattern parallel to the heat flow. This liquid-phase 3D patterning technique could pave the way for bottom-up design of differently aligned nanocellulose films to develop sophisticated optical and thermal materials. Nickel-rich layered LiNi1−x−yCoxMnyO2 (LiMO2) is widely investigated as a promising cathode material for advanced lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, and a much higher energy density in higher cut-off voltage is emergent for long driving range. However, during extensive cycling when charged to higher voltage, the battery exhibits severe capacity fading and obvious structural collapse, which leads to poor cycle stability. Herein, Sn-doping and in situ formed Li2SnO3 nano-coating layer co-modified spherical-like LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 samples were successfully prepared using a facile molten salt method and demonstrated excellent cyclic properties and high-rate capabilities. The transition metal site was expected to be substituted by Sn in this study. The original crystal structures of the layered materials were influenced by Sn-doping. Sn not only entered into the crystal lattice of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, but also formed Li+-conductive Li2SnO3 on the surface. Sn-doping and Li2SnO3 coating layer co-modification are helpful to optimize the ratio of Ni2+ and Ni3+, and to improve the conductivity of the cathode. The reversible capacity and rate capability of the cathode are improved by Sn-modification. The 3 mol% Sn-modified LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 sample maintained the reversible capacity of 146.8 mAh g−1 at 5C, corresponding to 75.8% of its low-rate capacity (0.1C, 193.7mAh g−1) and kept the reversible capacity of 157.3 mAh g−1 with 88.4% capacity retention after 100 charge and discharge cycles at 1C rate between 2.7 and 4.6 V, showing the improved electrochemical property. The interest around essential oils is constantly increasing thanks to their biological properties exploitable in several fields, from pharmaceuticals to food and agriculture. However, their widespread use and marketing are still restricted due to their poor physico-chemical properties; i.e., high volatility, thermal decomposition, low water solubility, and stability issues. At the moment, the most suitable approach to overcome such limitations is based on the development of proper formulation strategies. One of the approaches suggested to achieve this goal is the so-called encapsulation process through the preparation of aqueous nano-dispersions. Among them, micro- and nanoemulsions are the most studied thanks to the ease of formulation, handling and to their manufacturing costs. In this direction, this review intends to offer an overview of the formulation, preparation and stability parameters of micro- and nanoemulsions. Specifically, recent literature has been examined in order to define the most common practices adopted (materials and fabrication methods), highlighting their suitability and effectiveness.
