Research in optical metasurfaces has explosively grown in recent years, primarily due to their ability of exercising complete control over the transmitted and reflected fields. Application prospects in many emerging technologies require this control to become dynamic, so that the metasurface response could be tuned with external stimuli. In this work, electrically tunable optical metasurfaces operating in reflection as optical free-space modulators are demonstrated. The intensity modulation is achieved by exploiting the electro-optic Pockels effect and tuning the Fabry-Perot resonance in a 320 nm-thick lithium niobate (LN) film sandwiched between a continuous thick gold film and an array of gold nanostripes, serving also as control electrodes. The proposed compact (<1000 μm 2 ) modulators operate in the wavelength range of 900-1000 nm, featuring a maximum intensity modulation depth of ∼20% at the driving voltage of ± 10 V within the bandwidth of 8.0 MHz (with the potential bandwidth of ∼25 GHz). By arranging a 2 × 2 array of individually addressable modulators, space-variant control of light reflection is demonstrated, therefore opening a way towards the realization of inertia-free, ultrafast, and robust spatial light modulators based on tunable LN flat optics components.

Conventional beam splitters and wave plates, while being essential components in diverse optical systems, require considerable space, especially when used in combination. Here, we designed and experimentally demonstrated metasurface-enabled efficient broadband beam splitters integrated with quarter-wave plate (QWP) functionality for simultaneous power splitting and circular-to-linear polarization conversion in the near-infrared range. By utilizing two different gap-plasmon meta-atoms, which function as QWPs performing efficient circular-to-linear polarization conversion and provide the phase difference of π between reflected linearly polarized beams, we designed a metasurface that completely suppress the specular reflection (zero-order diffraction) and second-order diffraction, while ensuring efficient and equal beam splitting of a circularly polarized wave into two reflected beams with predesigned directions and well-defined linear-polarization states in the wavelength range of 750-950 nm. The fabricated metasurface exhibits excellent performance of circular-to-linear conversion and power splitting, with efficient suppression of specular reflection (<1%) and splitting efficiencies above 50% for both right and left circularly polarized excitation at the design wavelength of λ = 850 nm. By enabling the combined functionalities of a conventional beam splitter and a QWP, our approach opens up new prospects for advanced research and applications targeting photonics integration and miniaturization.

Miniaturization of functional optical devices and circuits is a key prerequisite for a myriad of applications ranging from biosensing to quantum information processing. This development has considerably been spurred by rapid developments within plasmonics exploiting its unprecedented ability to squeeze light into subwavelength scale. In this study, we investigate on-chip plasmonic systems allowing for synchronous excitation of multiple inputs and examine the interference between two adjacent excited channels. We present a branchless interferometer consisting of two parallel plasmonic waveguides that can be either selectively or coherently excited via ultra-compact antenna couplers. The total coupling efficiency is quantitatively characterized in a systematic manner and shown to exceed 15% for small waveguide separations, with the power distribution between the two waveguides being efficiently and dynamically shaped by adjusting the incident beam position. The presented design principle can readily be extended to other configurations, giving new perspectives for highly dense integrated plasmonic circuitry, optoelectronic devices, and sensing applications.

High temporal stability and spin dynamics of individual nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond crystals make them one of the most promising quantum emitters operating at room temperature. We demonstrate a chip-integrated cavity-coupled emission into propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes narrowing the NV center's broad emission bandwidth with enhanced coupling efficiency. The cavity resonator consists of two distributed Bragg mirrors that are built at opposite sides of the coupled NV emitter and are integrated with a dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide (DLSPPW), using electron-beam lithography of hydrogen silsesquioxane resist deposited on silver-coated silicon substrates. A quality factor of ∼70 for the cavity (full width at half maximum ∼10 nm) with full tunability of the resonance wavelength is demonstrated. An up to 42-fold decay rate enhancement of the spontaneous emission at the cavity resonance is achieved, indicating high DLSPPW mode confinement.

Surface plasmon polaritons enable light concentration within subwavelength regions, opening thereby new avenues for miniaturizing the device and strengthening light-matter interactions. Here we realize efficient electro-optic modulation in low-loss plasmonic waveguides with the aid of graphene, and the devices are fully integrated in the silicon-on-insulator platform. By advantageously exploiting low-loss plasmonic slot-waveguide modes, which weakly leak into a substrate while featuring strong fields within the two-layer-graphene covered slots in metals, we successfully achieve a tunability of 0.13 dB μm -1 for our fabricated graphene-plasmonic waveguide devices with extremely low insertion loss, which outperforms previously reported graphene-plasmonic devices. Our results highlight the potential of graphene plasmonic leaky-mode hybrid waveguides to realize active ultra-compact devices for optoelectronic applications.

Controlling and confining light by exciting plasmons in resonant metallic nanostructures is an essential aspect of many new emerging optical technologies. Here we explore the possibility of controllably reconfiguring the intrinsic optical properties of semi-continuous gold films, by inducing permanent morphological changes with a femtosecond (fs)-pulsed laser above a critical power. Optical transmission spectroscopy measurements show a correlation between the spectra of the morphologically modified films and the wavelength, polarization, and the intensity of the laser used for alteration. In order to understand the modifications induced by the laser writing, we explore the near-field properties of these films with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). A comparison between our experimental data and full-wave simulations on the exact film morphologies hints toward a restructuring of the intrinsic plasmonic eigenmodes of the metallic film by photothermal effects. We explain these optical changes with a simple model and demonstrate experimentally that laser writing can be used to controllably modify the optical properties of these semi-continuous films. These metal films offer an easy-to-fabricate and scalable platform for technological applications such as molecular sensing and ultra-dense data storage.

Tapered metallic grooves have been shown to support plasmons - electromagnetically coupled oscillations of free electrons at metal-dielectric interfaces - across a variety of configurations and V-like profiles. Such plasmons may be divided into two categories: gap-surface plasmons (GSPs) that are confined laterally between the tapered groove sidewalls and propagate either along the groove axis or normal to the planar surface, and channeled plasmon polaritons (CPPs) that occupy the tapered groove profile and propagate exclusively along the groove axis. Both GSPs and CPPs exhibit an assortment of unique properties that are highly suited to a broad range of cutting-edge nanoplasmonic technologies, including ultracompact photonic circuits, quantum-optics components, enhanced lab-on-a-chip devices, efficient light-absorbing surfaces and advanced optical filters, while additionally affording a niche platform to explore the fundamental science of plasmon excitations and their interactions. In this Review, we provide a research status update of plasmons in tapered grooves, starting with a presentation of the theory and important features of GSPs and CPPs, and follow with an overview of the broad range of applications they enable or improve. We cover the techniques that can fabricate tapered groove structures, in particular highlighting wafer-scale production methods, and outline the various photon- and electron-based approaches that can be used to launch and study GSPs and CPPs. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that remain for further developing plasmonic tapered-groove devices, and consider the future directions offered by this select yet potentially far-reaching topic area.
