Atomically thin narrow-bandgap layered PdSe2 has attracted much attention due to its rich and unique electrical properties. For silicon-compatible device integration, direct wafer-scale preparation of high-quality PdSe2 thin film on a silicon substrate is highly desired. Here, we present the low-temperature synthesis of large-area polycrystalline PdSe2 films grown on SiO2/Si substrates by plasma-assisted metal selenization and investigate their charge carrier transport behaviors. Raman analysis, depth-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy were used to reveal the selenization process. The results indicate a structural evolution from initial Pd to intermediate PdSe2-x phase and eventually to PdSe2. The field-effect transistors fabricated from these ultrathin PdSe2 films exhibit strong thickness-dependent transport behaviors. For thinner films (4.5 nm), a record high on/off ratio of 104 was obtained. While for thick ones (11 nm), the maximum hole mobility is about 0.93 cm2 V-1 S-1, which is the record high value ever reported for polycrystalline films. These findings suggest that our low-temperature-metal-selenized PdSe2 films have high quality and show great potential for applications in electrical devices.

Vaccines have become one of the most effective strategies to deal with various infectious diseases and chronic noninfectious diseases, such as SARS virus, Novel Coronavirus, cancer, etc. However, recent studies have found that the neutralizing antibody titers induced by vaccines would drop to half level or even lower after vaccination. In this study, we designed a novel small-sized positively charged nanofiber-1 (PEI-CNF-1) as a vaccine carrier, which can induce a high long-term humoral immune response by controlled release of antigen. Further studies showed that PEI-CNF-1 could significantly induce the release of immune response factor IL-1β and bone marrow-derived cell (BMDC) maturation. Moreover, compare to other cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), PEI-CNF-1 combined antigen (ovalbumin, OVA) induced and maintained the highest and longest antibody titers after vaccination. Interestingly, the antibody titers have no significant difference between at 21 and 90 d. Mechanically, we found that PEI-NCF-1 not only could control the slow-release of antigen, but also could be more easily swallowed by macrophages and metabolized by the bodies, thus presenting antigen more effectively. In conclusion, we believe that PEI-CNF-1 have a very high application prospect in inducing long-term humoral immune response, so as to achieve efficient prevention effect to epidemic viruses.

The influence of multiple dimensional carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene quantum dots (GQD), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and graphene sheets (GNS) of the thermoelectric properties in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS)-based hybrids have been investigated. PEDOT: PSS matrix was successfully used to prepare PEDOT: PSS/GQDs (PGQD), PEDOT: PSS/MWCNT (PCNT) and PEDOT: PSS/GNS (PGNS) composite films. According to structural characteristics, strongπ-πinteractions existed between carbon materials and PEDOT: PSS, and PEDOT: PSS layers with organized and arranged morphology were easier templated by GNS than GQD or MWCNT. It was found that besides energy filtering effect, hole-phonon interaction occurred with further addition of GNS and GQDs in PGNS and PGQD composite films. The optimal power factor (PF) of approximately 580 and 103μW m-1K-2at 363 K were acquired in PGNS composite films at 5 wt% GNS and PGQD films with 1 wt% GQD filling, respectively. Unlike PGNS and PGQD films, electrical conductivity of PCNT reduced upon the addition of MWCNT, while the Seebeck coefficient decreased firstly, and then increased and reached to the highest value at 10 wt% MWCNT. The optimal PF of 381.8μW m-1K-2at 363 K was obtained with weight fraction of 0.1 wt% in PCNT films.

Contact resistance (R C ) is of great importance for radio frequency (RF) applications of graphene, especially graphene field effect transistors (FETs) with short channel. FETs and transmission line model test structures based on chemical vapor deposition grown graphene are fabricated. The effects of employing traditional lithography solvent (Acetone) and strong solvents for photo resist, such as N, N-Dimethylacetamide (ZDMAC) and N-Methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), are systematically investigated. It was found that ZDMAC and NMP have more proficiency than acetone to remove the photo-resist residues and contaminations attached on graphene surface, enabling clean surface of graphene. However, strong solvents are found to destroy the lattice structure of graphene channel and induce defects in graphene lattice. Clean surface contributes to a significant reduction in the R C between graphene channel and metal electrode, and the defects introduced on graphene surface underneath metal electrodes also contribute the reduction of R C . But defects and deformation of lattice will increase the resistance in graphene channel and lead to the compromise of device performance. To address this problem, a mix wet-chemical approach employing both acetone and ZDMAC was developed in our study to realize a 19.07% reduction of R C , without an unacceptable mass production of defects.

Recently, graphene has led to unprecedented progress in device performance at the atom limit. A high performance of field-effect transistors requires a low graphene–metal contact resistance. However, the chemical doping methods used to tailor or improve the properties of graphene are sensitive to ambient conditions. Here, we fabricate a single-layer perfluorinated polymeric sulfonic acid (PFSA), also known as Nafion, between the graphene and the substrate as a p-type dopant. The PFSA doping method, without inducing any additional structural defects, reduces the contact resistance of graphene by ∼28.8%, which has a significant impact on practical applications. This reduction can be maintained for at least 67 days due to the extreme stability of PFSA. Effective, uniform and stable, the PFSA doping method provides an efficient way to reduce the contact resistance of graphene applications.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occupies a pivotal position in fuel cell applications, and it is a challenge to obtain highly durable ORR catalysts. Herein, porous cobalt oxide microsphere growing at the surface of on nitrogen-doped graphitized-nano-diamond (CoOx/N-GND) was prepared using hydrothermal and subsequent heat treatment process. Porous cobalt oxide of high specific surface area could expose more surface Co2+that act as active sites than bulk one does. The doping of nitrogen also promotes the catalytic activity. Besides, nano-diamond (ND) ofsp3hybrid structure was used as an electronic conduction carriers of ultrahigh stability to improve the durability of catalytic composite. Prepared CoOx/N-GND shows a satisfactory half-wave potential of 0.82 V (versus RHE), which is close to that of Pt/C (0.85 V), an excellent methanol tolerance and a lower activity loss after 5000 cycles. These merits inspire the application of CoOx/N-GND as the cathode of Zn-air battery and the battery performance was evaluated in this work. In general, this work highlights an innovate approach to design and prepare highly durable catalyst.

Thermosets possess diverse physical and chemical properties and thus they are widely used in various applications such as electronic packaging, construction, and automotive industries. However, their poor thermal conductivity and weak mechanical performance jeopardize their continual spread in modern industry. In this study, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were employed to promote both mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy nanocomposites. BNNSs and their epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated usingin situsolvent ultrasonication andin situpolymerization, respectively. Thermal conductivity was enhanced by 153% increment in epoxy/BNNS nanocomposite at 7 wt% in comparison with neat epoxy. In parallel, Young's modulus, lap shear strength, fracture toughness (K1C) and energy release rate (G1C) increased by 69%, 31%, 122% and 118%, respectively at 1 wt% BNNSs. Moreover, fatigue life and strength of lap shear joints were significantly improved upon adding BNNSs. A numerical model of the single lap shear joint was developed to validate the accuracy of the material constants obtained. Epoxy/BNNS nanocomposites exhibited an outstanding mechanical performance as well as high thermal conductivity giving them merits to widen their applications in electronic and automotive industry.

This system was further developed as an ECL immunosensor used in the detection of E. coli O157:H7. Due to the global infection problem caused by the abuse of antibiotics, the preparation of novel antibacterial nanomaterials is a key and basic requirement for applications in antibacterial and bacterial imaging fields. This paper reports the one-step preparation of blue–green-emitting carbon dots (CDs) under low temperature (80 °C) with glucose as the carbon source, citric acid as the dehydrating agent, and polyethyleneimine as the nitrogen source. Through inhibition zone tests and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) experiments, the inhibitory abilities of prepared CDs against various microorganisms, including gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria and fungi, were compared. It is worth mentioning that the MIC of CDs against Staphylococcus aureus reaches 4.7 μg ml−1, and the CDs exhibit excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, studies on visual-treatment therapy, in which infection treatment can be performed at the same time as bacterial imaging, with the prepared functional antibacterial CDs based on fluorescence confocal imaging would be beneficial to their promising future in medical and biological fields.

Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants has been proved to be an effective strategy for wastewater treatment. Herein, TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized on a Ti3C2 matrix by in situ growth, forming Z-scheme TiO2@Ti3C2/Cd0.5Zn0.5S (TO/CZS) multilevel structured nanocomposites via one-step hydrothermal route. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and Cd0.5Zn0.5S content on microstructure and properties of composites were assessed. TO/CZS nanocomposites were probed into phase composition, morphological and optical properties with x-ray diffractometer, infrared radiation, scanning electron microscope and UV–vis reflective spectra. Following the hydrothermal reaction at 160 °C for 12 h, TiO2 nanoparticles of 30 nm in diameter were generated in situ on Ti3C2 lamina and Cd0.5Zn0.5S particles were evenly distributed on the Ti3C2 matrix. The photocatalytic activity of TO/CZS composites were evaluated, which found that degradation rate constant (k = 0.028 min−1) of TO/CZS-40 on Rhodamine B was 5.19 times that of pure TiO2 and 4.48 times that of Cd0.5Zn0.5S. Through anchoring Ti3C2 as an electron transition mediator and combination with TiO2 and Cd0.5Zn0.5S, the new Z-scheme between TiO2 oxidized by Ti3C2 and Cd0.5Zn0.5S establishes a multilevel structure of separating electron-hole pairs. This work demonstrates a valid way to control electrons and hole transfer directions efficiently through designing multilevel semiconductor structural designs.

Preparation of p-n heterojunction with hierarchical structure is of great significance for photocatalysis due to its large specific surface area, abundant active sites and increased charge separation rate. Herein, we designed the novel p-n heterojunction photocatalyst TiO2/SnO microflower (TiO2/F-SnO) with hierarchical architecture by decorating TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the SnO microflower via a simple hydrothermal route. As compared to pure TiO2 and the TiO2/SnO with microplate structure (TiO2/P-SnO), the TiO2/F-SnO heterojunctions exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performances for organics removal such as toluidine blue O (TBO) and methylene blue (MB) under daylight fluorescent lamp irradiation (350-800 nm). The improved performance was not only ascribed to the promoted charge transfer and separation efficiency induced by the formation of p-n junction, but also attributed to the larger specific surface area, sufficient active sites and stronger redox ability provided by the hierarchical microflowers. Moreover, after three photocatalytic cycles (24 hours), TiO2/SnO heterojunction still exhibited a stable photocatalytic activity. Finally, the photocatalytic enhancement mechanism for the TiO2/SnO heterojunction was proposed based on band alignments calculation and the active species trapping experiments.

Tunable transport properties and Fano resonances are predicted in a circular bilayer phosphorene nanoring. The conductance exhibits Fano resonances with varying incident energy and applied perpendicular magnetic field. These Fano resonance peaks can be accurately fitted with the well known Fano curves. When a magnetic field is applied to the nanoring, the conductance oscillates periodically with magnetic field which is reminiscent of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Fano resonances are tightly related to the discrete states in the central nanoring, some of which are tunable by the magnetic field.

With the high demand for developing novel composites with integrated performance, graphene-based nanostructures have been drawing great attention in environmental and biomedical applications because of their extraordinary physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Although graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets exhibit some antibacterial activities, novel GO based nanostructures with enhanced antibacterial activities are highly desired. To realize this aim, polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified GO as a tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) carrier and release platform was constructed (pGO-TCH). The nanostructures were fully characterized by TEM, AFM, FTIR and Raman spectra, which demonstrated that TCH were uniformly and compactly deposited on PEI modified GO nanosheets. The antibacterial performances of the prepared nanostructures were investigated by disk diffusion method and bacterial growth kinetics method towards Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. Results show that pGO-TCH nanostructures exhibit good antibacterial behavior. The mechanism of antibacterial activity was studied. Moreover, the nanostructures showed good cytocompatibility. This study not only highlights a promising pGO-TCH nanostructure as a candidate of graphene-based antibacterial agent, but also provides us antibacterial mechanism between bacteria and graphene-based nanomaterials.

Resistive switching nanostructures are a promising candidate for next-generation non-volatile memories. In this report, we investigate the switching behaviors of single-crystalline ZnO nanowires suspended in air. They exhibit significantly higher current density, lower switching voltage, and more pronounced multiple conductance states compared to nanowires in direct contact with substrate. We attribute the effect to enhanced Joule heating efficiency, reduced surface scattering, and more significantly, the positive feedback established between the current density and local temperature in the suspended nanowires. The proposed mechanism has been quantitatively examined by finite element simulations. We have also demonstrated an innovative approach to initiating the current-temperature mutual enhancement through illumination by ultraviolet light, which further confirmed our hypothesis and enabled even greater enhancement. Our work provides further insight into the resistive switching mechanism of single-crystalline one-dimensional nanostructures, and suggests an effective means of performance enhancement and device optimization.

Three-dimensional (3D) SnO hierarchical architectures were synthesized via a one-step dissolution–precipitation route under room temperature using SnCl2 2H2O and Na2CO3 as the initial reagents. The morphology and size of the prepared SnO structures could be easily tailored by alternating the solvent from deionized water with absolute ethanol. The SEM observation showed that the prepared 3D SnO hierarchical architectures consisted of nanosheets. The size of the SnO hierarchical architectures could be effectively reduced from 4–10 μm to 1–2 μm when the solvent was changed from water to ethanol while the thickness of the assembling nanosheets was reduced from 200–500 nm to 20–30 nm at the same time. The possible formation mechanism of the 3D SnO hierarchical architectures is proposed in this paper. The photodegradation of methylene blue revealed that the SnO hierarchical structures prepared using ethanol as the solvent exhibit much better photocatalytic activity due to its smaller particle size, larger specific surface area, and appropriate band structure as well.

Suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been synthesized on Si inverse-opal structures by laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition (LCVD). A CW CO2 laser at 10.6 µm was used to directly irradiate the substrates during the LCVD process. At a laser power density of 14.3 MW m−2, suspended SWNT networks were found predominantly rooted at the sharp edges in the Si inverse-opal structures. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the SWNT networks were composed of high-quality defect-free SWNTs with an average diameter of 1.3 nm. At a lower laser power density (6.4 MW m−2), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were grown on the entire surface of the substrates. The preference for the synthesis of SWNTs or MWNTs was attributed to the difference in the catalyst sizes as well as the growth temperature in the LCVD process.

We report on the realization of high electron mobility (over 103 cm2 V−1 s−1) in structure-ordered and lattice-strained hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) due to the decrease of conduction effective mass and phonon scattering. The nc-Si:H thin films were grown on crystalline silicon substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition through the radio-frequency power to properly control the chemical reactions of H atoms with the Si–Si network. The electron mobility and concentration in the nc-Si:H have been extracted with the aid of magnetic-field-dependent Hall effect measurements. X-ray diffraction, Raman, and infrared transmission experiments have been employed to yield information about the lattice strain and structural order in the Si nanocrystals. The room-temperature experimental mobility has been well explained by a generalized Drude transport model unifying both the diffusive and ballistic transport mechanisms.

The stable small Ag seeds (size in diameter10 nm) were obtained in the presence of inositol hexakisphosphoric (IP₆) micelles. Then Ag-Au bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized through a replacement reaction with the rapid interdiffusion process between such small Ag seeds in nanoclusters and HAuCl₄. Adjusting the dosage of HAuCl₄ resulted in different products, which possessed unique surface plasmon resonances (SPR). The morphologies of the as-made nanoparticles were observed using transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy and their compositions were determined by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Among them, the Ag-Au alloy nanoparticles with the cauliflower-like structure had a suitable SPR for highly sensitive Raman detection application as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with a long-term stability of six months.

Highly branched Pd 2D nanowire networks are prepared by a template- and surfactant-free method in an ethylene glycol (EG)-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mixture under mild conditions. Pd nanowire networks with lengths ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers and branches with uniform diameters of ∼8 nm are grown. The most likely formation mechanism is also proposed. The as-produced Pd nanowire networks exhibit high surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity for 4-mercaptopyridine probe molecules with 5.0 × 10(-8) M concentration.

We report a one-step process for decorating poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) nanofibers with CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs). Using the QD-decorated PTT nanofibers with diameters of 400-800 nm as active subwavelength waveguides, their high photostability for 630 nm red light and low absorption coefficient down to 2.6 cm( - 1) were characterized by both evanescent waveguiding excitation and irradiation excitation. Compared with the irradiation excitation, a 200 times enhancement was obtained from the active subwavelength waveguides under the evanescent waveguiding excitation.

Chemical sensors based on semiconducting metal oxide nanocrystals are of academic and practical significance in industrial processing and environment-related applications. Novel alcohol response sensors using two-dimensional WO3 nanoplates as active elements have been investigated in this paper. Single-crystalline WO3 nanoplates were synthesized through a topochemical approach on the basis of intercalation chemistry (Chen et al 2008 Small 4 1813). The as-obtained WO3 nanoplate pastes were coated on the surface of an Al2O3 ceramic microtube with four Pt electrodes to measure their alcohol-sensing properties. The results show that the WO3 nanoplate sensors are highly sensitive to alcohols (e.g., methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and butanol) at moderate operating temperatures (260–360 ◦ C). For butanol, the WO3 nanoplate sensors have a sensitivity of 31 at 2 ppm and 161 at 100 ppm, operating at 300 ◦ C. For other alcohols, WO3 nanoplate sensors also show high sensitivities: 33 for methanol at 300 ppm, 70 for ethanol at 200 ppm, and 75 for isopropanol at 200 ppm. The response and recovery times of the WO3 nanoplate sensors are less than 15 s for all the test alcohols. A good linear relationship between the sensitivity and alcohol concentrations has been observed in the range of 2–300 ppm, whereas the WO3 nanoparticle sensors have not shown such a linear relationship. The sensitivities of the WO3 nanoplate sensors decrease and their response times become short when the operating temperatures increase. The enhanced alcohol-sensing performance could be attributed to the ultrathin platelike morphology, the high crystallinity and the loosely assembling structure of the WO3 nanoplates, due to the advantages of the effective adsorption and rapid diffusion of the alcohol molecules. We report a novel method of synthesizing a kind of silver nanoparticles aided by the inositol hexakisphosphoric micelle as a soft template and stabilizer. By controlling the reaction time, UV-vis and TEM observations of the size growth of the nanoparticles are performed. Careful examinations of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of 2-mercaptopyridine (2-Mpy) on the as-produced silver nanoparticles exhibit very stable and reproducible Raman signals within about 4 months.

In an effort to develop an alternative formulation of podophyllotoxin suitable for drug release and delivery, podophyllotoxin-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (PPT-SLNs) were constructed, characterized and examined for in vitro cytotoxicity and tumor inhibition. The SLNs were prepared by using a solvent emulsification–evaporation method, and their size was around 50 nm. TEM detection showed that the SLNs were homogeneous and spherical in shape, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement revealed a new conformation of PPT-SLNs. An in vitro drug release study showed that PPT was released from the SLNs in a slow but time-dependent manner. Furthermore, the treatment of 293T and HeLa cells with PPT-SLNs demonstrated that PPT-SLNs were less toxic to normal cells and more effective in anti-tumor potency compared with unconjugated PPT. A colony forming efficiency assay showed an effective long-term cancer growth suppression of PPT-SLNs; in addition, they can also enhance the apoptotic and cellular uptake processes on tumor cells compared with PPT. These results collectively demonstrated that this SLN formulation has a potential application as an alternative delivery system for anti-tumor drugs.

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have been among the most promising emerging fluorescent labels for cellular imaging. In this work, a new facile synthesis method was developed for fabricating CDs from polystyrene foam waste and common organic solvents. The CDs obtained have tunable emission from blue to orange and are expected to be of use for labeling different cellular structures simultaneously. Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectrophotometry (PL) were employed to investigate the structures and luminescence properties of CDs. The highest quantum yield (QY) achieved was 36%. The mechanisms for the formation and luminescence of the CDs are analyzed. The ability of the solvent to disperse the CDs plays a very important role in the origin of PL. The type of organic solvent has an important influence on the position of emission peaks and the QY. Different emissive traps play the dominant role in the luminescence of carbon materials. Furthermore, a hemolysis assay was performed to evaluate the biocompatibility of these CDs in vitro. The biocompatibility of the CDs, even at very high doses, ensures their potential in biomedical applications.

The large instantaneous magnetoresistance of + 90% observed at low axial strain was a result of conduction pathway breaking caused by preferential orientation of the conducting nanotubes perpendicular to the axial current flow: a result of the magnetic torque experienced by the ferromagnetic nanotube core. At large strain the observed large instantaneous change in resistance of - 90% resulted from voltage-driven relaxation in the conducting nanotube network. At high axial strain the competition between voltage-driven relaxation and a magnetic torque gave rise to an oscillatory component of resistance relaxation.

Well-aligned tin-doped indium (ITO) nanowires have been prepared using the electrospinning process. The Sn doping mechanism and microstructure have been characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Devices for I-V measurement and field-effect transistors (FETs) were assembled using ITO nanowires with top contact configurations. The effect of Sn doping on the electrical conductivity was significant in that it enhanced the conductance by over 10(7) times, up to ∼1 S cm(-1) for ITO nanowires with an Sn content of 17.5 at.%. The nanowire FETs were operated in the depletion mode with an electron mobility of up to 0.45 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and an on/off ratio of 10(3).
