It has been said of today's labor movement in the United States that it needs, more than anything else, some honest rebels within its own ranks-men to kindle fires of protest against union chieftains who have grown out of touch with the rank and file. Such a rebel has now emerged on the West Coast, and under his direction more than 10,000 workers have staged the first major union revolt in almost twenty years. William R. Perrin is president of the new Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers Membership, and the association is composed of mill workers in California, Oregon and Washington. On June 4, Perrin held a news conference to announce that twenty-three West Coast locals, with a membership of slightly more than 10 000 had disaffiliated from the two unions and formed the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers.

The article focuses on several meetings of associations and institutions. The annual meeting of the American Psychological Association, held in New York City last week, in connection with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has directed public attention again to the progress of psychological research. There was an exhibition of the newer methods employed and results achieved in the various laboratories throughout the United States. One of the largest and, from the point of view of general interest, most enjoyable meetings of the Modern Language Association was held this week at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. The character of the papers was even farther removed from the dry-as-dust productions on specialized philological subjects than were those of last year. Of the twenty-three papers, ten were in the field of English literature, and that mainly modern; and six might be roughly grouped under the head of the technique and criticism of literature in general.

The American Philological Association has come and gone. It came without observation; it should not go without notice. It was the thirty-fifth annual session. It was held at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut from July 7 to 9. There were about sixty members in attendance. Some made but a short stay, about forty endured to the end. There were forty-three papers on the printed program. Several professors discuss issues related to philology. Some innovations of procedure were initiated. A permanent committee on nominations was appointed, consisting of five members, one to retire each year.

Socially, the annual meetings of the American Historical and American Political Science Associations at Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, December 28-31, 1908, were notably successful. The hotel arrangements, permitting the great majority of members to live for the time being under one roof, facilitated the personal conference which forms so large a part of the value of these meetings; for it must be admitted that the obligation to listen to papers and discussions sits less and less heavily upon the members as the years go by. The program of papers and conferences, while, as usual, full of variety and information, developed fewer distinctive excellencies than has sometimes been the case, or than the announced titles would in some cases lead one to suppose.

The Seattle-based newspaper "Post Intelligencer," closed for three and a half months by a strike of the American Newspaper Guild, was reopened in true Hearstian style. The Chamber of Commerce called public meetings. And John Boettiger, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's son-in-law, was hired to manage the paper. Assurances were given to the public that Boettiger would have a free hand to run things as he saw fit. Organized labor was told that chiseling on contracts and other unfair practices of the past would be stopped.

The twenty-first annual meeting of the American Economic Association was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, December 28 to 31, 1908. Three smaller bodies, the American Sociological Society, the American Statistical Society, and the American Association for Labor Legislation, convened at the same time and place. Various economists and sociologists read their paper on different subjects. Several joint sessions were devoted to subjects of common interest. Professor J.B. Clark of Columbia University, New York, read the chief paper on collective bargaining. The joint session to consider legislation affecting laborers was opened by an address by Professor H.W. Farnam of Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

This article focuses on the annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences that was held in Washington. It was distinguished by an unusually large attendance of over sixty members and by a program of about thirty-five papers, well distributed among the different sciences. S.J. Meltzer, of the Rockefeller Institute, in a paper on Permeability of Endothelia, undertook to explain the method by which the blood, although flowing in closed vessels, is enabled to introduce liquid into the tissues. The doctrine of vitalism assumes that processes exist which are not explained by physics and chemistry, and that there is a difference between physical and physiological permeability.

The article reports on the papers presented at the annual session of the American Philological Association and the Archeological Institute held on December 27-30 held in the U.S. President of the Philological Association, Professor Paul Shorey of the University of Chicago, delivered the usual annual address before the two societies in joint session. He gave a characteristically witty and profitable discussion of "Classical Philology and National Culture." The meetings of the Archaeological Institute, with its added attraction of lantern illustration of recent excavations, drew the larger attendance.

This article presents information about several books on different topics. The Baukside Parallel Edition of the quarto and first folio texts or Shakespeare will employ the entirely unique system of Line Notation finally adopted by the Royal Geographical Society, and which the Society believes to be satisfactorily adjustable for all critical purposes to any edition of the plays. The "Scottish Geographical Magazine" for August contains a paper on recent physical research in the North Sea, founded on observations made by the German Navy during the past few years, and ma abstract of the first Government Report on Upper Burma, giving a thief outline of events leading to its occupation, the present methods of government, its resources etc.

This article focuses on prevailing political conditions the U.S. and around the world, as of November 14, 1907. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt has promised not only to recommend in his annual message to the U.S. Congress the abolition of the oppressive tariffs, but also to urge the Department of Justice to ascertain if the paper manufacturers are violating the anti-Trust laws. The American Newspaper Publishers' Association had appealed for the abolition of the tariff on press paper, wood pulp, and all the wood that goes into the manufacture of paper. Another development focuses on the results of elections in Russia, which showed an almost absolute Majority for the Reactionaries in the new Duma.

This article presents information on various socio-political developments in the U.S. The week before last saw the annual gathering in New York of leading newspaper-makers for the meetings of the Associated Press and of the American Newspaper Publishers' Association. So far as may be judged from the reports, the usual self-satisfaction of these conventions has been marred only by the pressing paper question. That international republic of learning which somehow managed to sustain itself, with varying fortunes, from the days of the medieval universities till the war, though the war shattered it, is beginning to reassemble its shards. The International Research Council continues its existence and its organization, to perform in peace something like the same large services it performed in war. The American Council of Leaned Societies Devoted to Humanistic Studies has been organized for the purpose of choosing delegates to the Union Academique Internationale, itself lately formed in Europe to draw together the scholars of all nations in joint tasks and mutual assistance. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has established in New York the Institute of International Education as a clearing house for the colleges and universities of the world.

The article presents information related to several books and publication. The Baker & Taylor Co. will issue in the autumn "Reminiscences of a Long Life," by the venerable Theodore L. Cuyler, of Brooklyn, now in his eighty-first year. The concluding volume in Messrs. A.C. Armstrong & Son's "Book-Lovers' Library" is to be, "How to Make an Index," by Henry B. Wheatley, certainty a desideratum for a larger majority of authors and publishers. The Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, which owes so much of its prosperity and usefulness to the loving interest of the late John Codman Ropes, has recently published the eleventh volume of its papers, containing a timely account of "Operations against Cuba and Porto Rico, 1595-1762."

This article focuses on the Roman Catholic Church press. More powerful than any other religious press, it includes, according to Chatles H. Ridder, president of the Catholic Press Association, 139 newspapers, with a circulation of 2,639,165, and 197 magazines, with a circulation of 4,604,141, besides more than 4,000 local publications. The American Catholic press is a vital part of the Church's political machinery and was greatly encouraged by Pope Pius XI, who saw it as a powerful agency of Catholic Action, that is, cooperation between laity and hierarchy for the attainment of Catholic aims.

Owing to the good attendance and to the admirable management of the local committee of the Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey faculty, the twenty-sixth meeting of the Modern Language Association held here December 28-30, 1908, was one of the most successful in recent years. The majority of the papers were about equally divided between English and French, whereas, German, Italian, and Spanish were represented by two or three apiece. The address by the president of the association, Professor F.M. Warren of Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, was a plea for the study of Medieval Latin.

This article presents information on publication of several books and papers in the U.S. Several of the studies in Hilaire Belloc's book "Hills and the Sea" were first published in the English dailies, and very much out of place they seemed, in the silly season, in tile columns of the "Morning Post." Number 4, volume 14, New Series, of the Proceedings of the Modern Language Association of America, covering the twenty-third meeting, held last December at Haverford College and the University of Wisconsin, is just issued. Among the most interesting papers are those by Walter Morris Hart, on "Professor Child and the Ballad."

The article presents economic and social updates of the U.S., as of November 28, 1901. How strong, and often malign, may be the prejudice connected with old battle cries, was shown again at the opening of the Reciprocity Convention in Washington on November 19. To some delegates, free trade was evidently a dragon hidden somewhere in the hail, and ready to rush upon them if they were unwary. In another update, at the Charities Conference last week George F. Canfield, President of the State Charities Aid Association, read a paper on the influence of politics on State and city institutions. The conclusions, which he reached, are founded upon reports received in answer to inquiries sent throughout the State asking information on this particular point.

This article profiles the life and career of Joseph Patrick Ryan, President of International Longshoremen's Association. Ryan looks considerably younger than his sixty-two years. He was born in Babylon, Long Island. He left school at the age of twelve and moved to the Chelsea district of Manhattan, New York. He got work papers at fourteen and became a stock boy, clerk, street-car conductor. He was a married man with a family when in 1912 he turned to work on the docks, six days a week for $18.

In this age of congresses, literary, theological, and scientific, it is not strange that the workers in the new science of psychology should want a congress. Congresses may be said to have two main functions, one scientific and the other social. There are those who say that they should have only one function, the scientific, and there are those who claim that, as a matter of fact, they have only one function, the social. The present International Congress of Experimental Psychology, while successful in most respects, yet lacked one thing which, in most gatherings of the kind, has been an important stimulative feature. The programme was allowed to grow to such length that altogether too little time was given to discussion and criticism.

The fifty-fourth meeting of The Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis was held at Columbia University on December 26 and 27, 1920. Both in point of attendance and in the interest aroused by the papers presented the meeting was an unusually successful one. Four separate sessions for the reading of papers were held and a fifth one on Friday evening conjointly with the American Philological Association and the Archeological Institute of America, which met in New York on the same days.

This article discusses several books on scientific literature and presents developments in the field of science, as of August 29, 1907. The seventh annual meeting of the International Zoological Congress, held at the Harvard Medical School in August 1907, emphasized the new features, which have come to characterize zoology-physiology and mathematics. Professor H.F. Osborn of Columbia University delivered an address on "Evolution as it Appears to the Paleontologist," in which he enunciated some general laws of great significance. The book "Practical Health," L.E. Whipple, principle of the American School of Metaphysics, seeks to simplify the application of doctrines presented for some years past in several editions of his widely read book "Mental Health."

More than 400 members were the guests of Columbia University at the thirty-second annual meeting of the Modern Language Association of America on December 29, 30, and 31. Besides the usual social features, the proceedings consisted of papers excellently representative of most of the interests of present American scholarship. Most timely was the analysis of the contemporary religious revival in France, which finds expression in art, science, and philosophy.

The session of the American Philosophical Society at Philadelphia during April 18 to April 20, 1912 was interesting and successful. Researcher E.A. Spitzka of the Jefferson Medical College presented the results of his study of the weight and morphologic appearances of the human brain and its several parts, resulting from a series of studies upon specimens of various races and notable individuals. Professor William H. Hobbs of the University of Michigan, in his paper on "Some Considerations Bearing Upon the Origin of Lava," called attention to the fact that the ideas generally held concerning the origin of lava have all supposed a liquid interior to the earth.

This article focuses on the book "Studies in Musical Education, History and Aesthetics." Twenty-nine years ago the Music Teachers' National Association was founded, and many papers read at the annual gatherings have been worth preserving. A year ago the Association printed the Proceedings of its 1906 meeting, and we now have a Second Series, for the meeting of 1907, which was held on the last five days of that year. The volume covers a variety of topics, yet considerably more than half its pages are devoted to the problems of music in schools and universities.

The article provides information from the field of science. It discusses the book, The Nervous System of Vertebrates, by J.B. Johnston. In this article an attempt has been made to give an account of the nervous system as a whole, to trace its phylogenetic history, and to show the factors, which have determined the course of evolution. Last week the American Chemical Society held its thirty-fifth general meeting. The members were guests of Columbia University, New York City and of the College of the City of New York. About one hundred papers, mostly on highly technical topics, were presented to the various sections.

Among the transactions of the Illinois State Historical Society of the year 1908 was a narrative of a movement initiated by Thomas Jefferson in 1784 to prevent the introduction of slavery in the Northwestern Territory. The narrative was presented in a paper read by Joseph B. Lemen, of' O'Fallon, Illinois and was included in the published volume of that year. Jefferson had failed by one vote in the Congress of 1784 to pass an ordinance excluding slavery from all of the unoccupied territory of the U.S., both north and south of the Ohio River.

The article presents notes regarding the publication of various books. The Oxford University Press announces for immediate publication of the book "The Layman's Old Testament," which will be procurable in two volumes or one. The book comprises the major part of the Old Testament, with selections from the book "Apocrypha," edited with brief notes by Canon Glazebrook. It is announced by the Henry Bradshaw Society of London that the introduction to the book "Stowe Missal" is now in the press and that the work will be completed by the publication at an early date of the long-delayed second volume.

The article presents information on recent publications and opening of new educational societies. The November issue of the journal "The International Review," is rather heavy but a paper on "States Debts and Repudiation," by Robert P. Porter makes it valuable. The Society for Political Education is a new organization located in New York City which aims to remove the reproach in present political system. This organization, "non-partisan in its character and, in the best sense, national in its scope," is managed by an Executive Committee of twenty five members.

The article presents information related to several books and publishers. M. Alphonse Lemerre, the publisher of most contemporary-French poets, has formed an alliance with M. Guillauine, who devised the decorations of "Tartarin sur les Alpes," to issue a new series of illustrated novels, to begin with M. Daudet's "Les Femmes d'Artiste." "Irish Pictures," by Richard Lovett, is one of the best of the series of "Pictures of Different Countries" published by the Religious Tract Society and by Nelson & Sons, New York. The views are, for the most part, true to nature and to the spirit of the scenery, and the letterpress is written in a kindly, fresh, and appreciative spirit.

At a recent meeting of the German Archæological Institute in Rome, Prof. M. Meurer read an important paper regarding the famous gold ornaments from the shaft graves at Mycenæ. The Italians have explored a large necropolis at the ancient Roman town of Ola. near Tripoli, and have discovered twenty-one rock-hewn tombs containing many glass and bronze vases as well as earthenware cinerary urns. The excavations carried on at Abydos by the Egypt Exploration Fund, under the direction of E. Naville, have led to some remarkable results.

Education in Great Britain has just been undergoing a careful scrutiny. The Educational Section of the British Association has been listening to papers and addresses on a wide range of topics, which have then become the subject of general discussion. Some of these topics are the same as those Americans are accustomed to; others are strikingly unfamiliar. On both sides of the Atlantic there is complaint of the want of coordination between secondary school and college. But in the United States it takes the form of an outcry against the tyranny of the college. In Great Britain there is protest against the "un-natural ascendancy" enjoyed by secondary education. In the very process of leading democracy to higher levels, education makes efforts to adjust itself to the ideals of the institution for which it ostensibly sets the ideals. In the United States this is shown of late by the emphasis put upon vocational training. Democracy is willing to be educated, but it is inclined to prescribe its own courses.

The article discusses various related with reforming newspaper readers. A beginning of the work has been made on a modest scale in England. The effects of sensational and childish methods of journalism are also observable in the English Press. Accordingly, the Clubs' Industrial Association has taken a first step. This organization, situated in the north of England, has recently formed a "newspaper class" for working girls. The object is to teach them what papers to read and what to avoid, and also what parts of any given newspaper to give chief attention to and what to skim or skip.

The Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at the Montreal meeting in August, 1882, are distributed in two paper-covered parts of about 300 pages each. This bulkiness might have been considerably reduced by omitting abstracts as worthless as that on the "Future of the Balloon" which does not contain a single idea. Horace C. Hovey's paper on "Subterranean Map-making" is accompanied by a tolerably accurate plotting of the Wyandot Cave, a still better one of the Luray Cavern, and a partial but trustworthy one of the Mammoth Cave.

Less spectacular than the struggle in automobiles or steel but almost equally important to labor's future is the life-and-death battle between the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations now raging in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle and other Pacific Coast cities seem to be a testing ground for the most vicious attacks yet made by the federation leadership upon progressive unionism and the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Pushed out in front by William Green and American Federation of Labor the executive council is Dave Beck, regional vice-president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Beck is an ambitious, rotund little man with an unusual talent for employing strong-arm methods with telling effect. He has built up an empire of about 10,000 teamsters in the region around Seattle alone, where his power is most concentrated.

This is the last piece in this series for consumers. Three recent conferences, all announced as for the consumer, show how that poor, abused word is being overworked. One of the conferences made page one of the newspapers, the second was buried inside, the third was not even mentioned in any large city paper. The conference that made page one was that of the National Association of Better Business Bureaus, held in Buffalo. Better Business Bureaus exist in every important city and town in the country.

Another volume of the "Journal des Goncourt," has appeared; is the last. It would seem so, as it extends from 1892 to 1895. The Goncourts were in their youth the intimate friends of Gavarni, and Goncourt is just now the president of a committee formed for the erection of a monument to the great humorous designer who flourished under the July Government. dreamy and poetical feeling. They have a minuteness which appears almost exaggerated, but the result is sometimes very powerful. Goncourt has pushed almost ad absurdum the descriptive mania, he gives the readers.

Neither the American Historical Association nor the American Political Science Association, both of which organizations, reconvening after an interval of two years, held their annual meetings at Cleveland, Ohio from December 27-January 1, allowed the war to overshadow entirely the other interests with which they have long been severally concerned. The American Historical Association, with which was also joined the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, devoted special sessions to ancient history, the history of the Mississippi Valley region, American economic history, Hispanic-American and European history, and American colonial history, in addition to two sessions dealing with agricultural history and a conference on history and education for citizenship in the schools.

Some steps have been taken by the city government for the establishment of a large free public library in New York. Some of the London papers are agitating for a similar institution there. In their appeals, they bring New York up as a conspicuous example of a city abounding in free libraries. In other developments, the Palestine Exploration Fund has begun to yield most promising results in a province where they were least expected and most needed— in that of Semitic Palaeography. A number of photographs, taken by the exploring expedition on various spots of the holy Land, were submitted by the committee to the British Museum.

Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) have been spilling back into the U.S. for four years now, but as yet their group forays into politics have been sporadic at best, and more than a little unwelcome to many of the volunteers. Indeed, one of the major concerns of a 1965 conference of returned corpsmen, titled "Citizen in a Time of Change," was a parcel of several proposals for a national association. Vietnam is certainly the catalyst, but it is not Vietnam alone. The mounting racial tensions in southern Africa, the agonizing deterioration of the Alliance for Progress, the growing U.S. military presence in Thailand, these and other occurrences are provoking serious thought among ex-PCVs.

Under the title "The Sham Argument Against Latin," the Classical Association of New England and the New York Latin Club have recently issued a vigorous rejoinder by C. H. Forbes, of Phillips Andover, to the disingenuous and grossly misleading attack upon the teaching of the classics in our schools by Mr. Abraham Flexner in his pamphlet "A Modern School," published a year ago by the Rockefeller General Education Board.

The author believes that it would be wholly unfair to say that journalist William Randolph Hearst is the guild's Enemy No. 1. A few months ago he announced that his attitude toward the guild was precisely the same as that of journalists E.W. Scripps and Roy Wilson Howard. At the time he claimed too much. Unfortunately Howard was out of the country on Election Day and may not have had an opportunity yet to study the returns quite as closely as Hearst seems to have done. The working newspaperman in this country is somewhat limited in his field of choice.

The article focuses on the book "Voodoo Fire in Haiti," by Richard A. Loederer and translated by Desmond I. Vesey. This book is a combination of distorted borrowings from other works on Haiti, nonsensical reporting of what the author claims to have seen in the island and attempted sensationalism that can only be regarded as a reductio ad absurdum of the "steaming-jungle, booming-tom-tom" school of adventure writing. It is a pity that stuff of this sort still has currency; it is even more a pity that such a book should be circulated by one of the important book clubs. For the author, an artist from Vienna, apparently cannot put pen to paper, whether in writing or drawing, without exaggerating what he has seen, changing it to fit his purpose, or, what is worse, inserting statements of fact not at all applicable to his subject.

The free world association recently planned a public debate on the Ball-Burton-Hatch-Hill resolution that the United States should cooperate with other nations to enforce peace after the war, but had to call it off because it could not find two isolationists willing to submit their view to debate. With orders on hand for 30,000 pairs of shoes to be made of wood and paper, a Norwegian factory had to delay production when the Nazis discovered that the paper for the uppers was red, white, and blue. Smoking at street-car stops in Belgium is now verboten.

This article presents information related to various political and social happenings in the U.S. during 1939. Although National Labor Relations Board hearings on charges of anti-union policies brought against the newspaper "New York Times," have been progressing for many weeks, only the radical and labor papers have reported them, the major dailies have maintained an almost unbroken silence. When American Nazi organizations staged an exposition at New York's Grand Central Palace, the banner of the Protestant War Veterans, a new pro-fascist group, hung beside the swastika. Despite his refusal to affirm or deny the reports, there is good foundation for the story that Columnist Heywood Broun has been converted to Catholicism.

Old party lines are breaking down in the Northwest and new issues are coming to the front in Montana. The elections to be held on November 5, 1914 possesses unusual interest. Three influences promised to make the campaign in Montana exciting as well as significant. First, the NonPartisan League was to enter Montana politics for the first time. Second, the workers in Butte, exasperated by the losing of several bitter strikes, promised to support the League. These two organizations embodied the accumulated feeling of resentment against the alleged domination of State politics by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and represented the organized demand for political and economic reform.

The article presents information about recent publications of the Bibliographical Society of London. Some of them are "Transactions of the Bibliographical Society," vol. 12; "A Hand-List of English Books in the Library of Emmanuel College"; "Abstracts From the Wills and Testamentary Documents of Printers, Binders, and Stationers of Cambridge From 1504 to 1699, " by G.J. Gray and W.M. Palmer. From the annual report for 1915 it appears that the prosperity of the Bibliographical Society has been much less affected by the continuance of the war than could have been expected. Of members of the Society in temporary cheek. But the membership has not yet been diminished and the monthly meetings have been regularly held.

The American Association for the Promotion of Social Science will meet in this city from November 19-21, 1867. It held its third annual meeting in Boston and listened to able addresses and papers on the present state of social science; its prospects and achievements in this country; on the population of Massachusetts, and changes in the physical organization of women in relation to the laws of human increase; on the effects of the condensation of population on human life. Appropriate mention was made of the high character and public services of the late Charles G. Loring, and resolutions adopted deploring his loss.

The article focuses on the work of the Senefelder Club in the field of Lithography. Their fifth exhibition, which has just opened, finds them in the gallery of Goupil & Co., the largest and most spacious in which they have as yet exhibited, showing the strongest work they have yet done, enjoying the official recognition of honorary members. Year by year the members seem to get a firmer grasp of their medium, to express themselves more eloquently in it, to understand better what it can and cannot do. And it can do a great deal.
