The article discusses the history and significance of the Lahemaa National Park in Estonia. Established during the Soviet era, the park is said to have served as a focus for Estonian nationalism while, paradoxically, inspiring the creation over other such parks throughout the Soviet Union. The tensions between the implicit assertion of Estonian nationhood represented by the Laheema project and the intention of Soviet Communist Party bureaucrats, led by Leonid Brezhnev, to maintain the dominion of the Soviet Union are analyzed.
