2. A distance to the galaxy NGC4258 from observations of Cepheid variable stars

Abstract

A portion of the nearby galaxy NGC4258 was observed to look for Cepheid variable stars using the WFPC2 camera and the Hubble Space Telescope on 11 epochs in 1998. It was possible to identify and determine light curves, periods, mean magnitudes and colours for 15 Cepheids. The distance calculated from the Cepheids was 8.1 plus or minus 0.4 Mpc. Revising Cepheid-calibrated distance indicators on the basis of the maser distance would boost the measured Hubble constant by 12% plus or minus 9%, with the corresponding age of the Universe falling similarly.

Abstract

Galaxy distances and velocities are needed to determine the expansion rate of the Universe, as described by the Hubble constant H(sub 0). Accurate distances of nearby galaxies and clusters are needed to measure indirect distance indicators, using Cepheid variable stars. A Cepheid distance of 18.6 plus or minus 1.9 (statistical error) plus or minus 1.9 Mpc (systematic error) for the galaxy NGC1365 in Fornax is reported.

Abstract

Use of the Hubble Space Telescope to determine the distance to the Virgo cluster galaxy yields a new value for the Hubble constant at 80 plus or minus 17 kilometers per second per megaparsecs. The Hubble constant, which provides the expansion rate of the universe, is the ratio of the recession velocity to the distance for a galaxy.

Abstract

A large, cool disk of dust in NGC4261 appears to be the outer accretion disk surrounding and feeding a black hole. Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope's Planetary Camera, Palomar Mountain's 48'' Schmidt telescope, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array reveal an outer disk surrounding a point source with two lobed jets. The inner source seems to be an inner accretion disk, through which the outer disk feeds the structure's engine.
