Attempts have been made to determine the global star-formation history of the Universe, based on information from deep redshift surveys and the Lyman-limit galaxies statistics. It has been made possible to undertake unbiased surveys and quantify star-formation activity in the young Universe, with the recent commissioning of the sensitive submillimetre array camera (SCUBA). The results of an ultra-deep submillimetre survey focusing on the Hubble Deep field are reported, including identification of a population of high-redshift dusty starbust galaxies.
