Abstract

The call by some taxonomists for doubling the list of bird species from 10,000 to 20,000 based on DNA genetics will pose problems for ornithologists in the understanding of birds, and will affect the status of birds in international wildlife conservation. The debate over the issue revolves around two species concepts, the biological species, and the phylogenetic species concept (PSC).
