Chirality of materials are known to affect optical, magnetic and electric properties, causing a variety of nontrivial phenomena such as circular dichiroism for chiral molecules, magnetic Skyrmions in chiral magnets and nonreciprocal carrier transport in chiral conductors. On the other hand, effect of chirality on superconducting transport has not been known. Here we report the nonreciprocity of superconductivity-unambiguous evidence of superconductivity reflecting chiral structure in which the forward and backward supercurrent flows are not equivalent because of inversion symmetry breaking. Such superconductivity is realized via ionic gating in individual chiral nanotubes of tungsten disulfide. The nonreciprocal signal is significantly enhanced in the superconducting state, being associated with unprecedented quantum Little-Parks oscillations originating from the interference of supercurrent along the circumference of the nanotube. The present results indicate that the nonreciprocity is a viable approach toward the superconductors with chiral or noncentrosymmetric structures.

If a material with an odd number of electrons per unit-cell is insulating, Mott localisation may be invoked as an explanation. This is widely accepted for the layered compound 1T-TaS2, which has a low-temperature insulating phase comprising charge order clusters with 13 unpaired orbitals each. But if the stacking of layers doubles the unit-cell to include an even number of orbitals, the nature of the insulating state is ambiguous. Here, scanning tunnelling microscopy reveals two distinct terminations of the charge order in 1T-TaS2, the sign of such a double-layer stacking pattern. However, spectroscopy at both terminations allows us to disentangle unit-cell doubling effects and determine that Mott localisation alone can drive gap formation. We also observe the collapse of Mottness at an extrinsically re-stacked termination, demonstrating that the microscopic mechanism of insulator-metal transitions lies in degrees of freedom of inter-layer stacking. Quasi-phase matching (QPM) is a technique extensively utilized in nonlinear optics for enhancing the efficiency and stability of frequency conversion processes. However, the conventional QPM relies on periodically poled ferroelectric crystals, which are limited in availability. The 3R phase of molybdenum disulfide (3R-MoS 2 ), a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDc) with the broken inversion symmetry, stands out as a promising candidate for QPM, enabling efficient nonlinear process. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the QPM at nanoscale, utilizing van der Waals stacking of 3R-MoS 2 layers with specific orientation to realize second harmonic generation (SHG) enhancement beyond the non QPM limit. We have also demonstrated enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) via QPM of 3R-MoS 2 homo-structure, enabling more efficient generation of entangled photon pairs. The tunable capacity of 3R-MoS 2 van der Waals stacking provides a platform for tuning phase-matching condition. Colloidal quantum dots are sub-10 nm semiconductors treated with liquid processes, rendering them attractive candidates for single-electron transistors operating at high temperatures. However, there have been few reports on single-electron transistors using colloidal quantum dots due to the difficulty in fabrication. In this work, we fabricated single-electron transistors using single oleic acid-capped PbS quantum dot coupled to nanogap metal electrodes and measured single-electron tunneling. We observed dot size-dependent carrier transport, orbital-dependent electron charging energy and conductance, electric field modulation of the electron confinement potential, and the Kondo effect, which provide nanoscopic insights into carrier transport through single colloidal quantum dots. Moreover, the large charging energy in small quantum dots enables single-electron transistor operation even at room temperature. These findings, as well as the commercial availability and high stability, make PbS quantum dots promising for the development of quantum information and optoelectronic devices, particularly room-temperature single-electron transistors with excellent optical properties., (© 2023. Van der Waals dielectrics are fundamental materials for condensed matter physics and advanced electronic applications. Most dielectrics host isotropic structures in crystalline or amorphous forms, and only a few studies have considered the role of anisotropic crystal symmetry in dielectrics as a delicate way to tune electronic properties of channel materials. Here, we demonstrate a layered anisotropic dielectric, SiP 2 , with non-symmorphic twofold-rotational C 2 symmetry as a gate medium which can break the original threefold-rotational C 3 symmetry of MoS 2 to achieve unexpected linearly-polarized photoluminescence and anisotropic second harmonic generation at SiP 2 /MoS 2 interfaces. In contrast to the isotropic behavior of pristine MoS 2 , a large conductance anisotropy with an anisotropy index up to 1000 can be achieved and modulated in SiP 2 -gated MoS 2 transistors. Theoretical calculations reveal that the anisotropic moiré potential at such interfaces is responsible for the giant anisotropic conductance and optical response. Semiconducting colloidal quantum dots and their assemblies exhibit superior optical properties owing to the quantum confinement effect. Thus, they are attracting tremendous interest from fundamental research to commercial applications. However, the electrical conducting properties remain detrimental predominantly due to the orientational disorder of quantum dots in the assembly. Here we report high conductivity and the consequent metallic behaviour of semiconducting colloidal quantum dots of lead sulphide. Precise facet orientation control to forming highly-ordered quasi-2-dimensional epitaxially-connected quantum dot superlattices is vital for high conductivity. The intrinsically high mobility over 10 cm 2  V -1  s -1 and temperature-independent behaviour proved the high potential of semiconductor quantum dots for electrical conducting properties. Furthermore, the continuously tunable subband filling will enable quantum dot superlattices to be a future platform for emerging physical properties investigations, such as strongly correlated and topological states, as demonstrated in the moiré superlattices of twisted bilayer graphene., (© 2023. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) condensation and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) are the two limiting ground states of paired Fermion systems, and the crossover between these two limits has been a source of excitement for both fields of high temperature superconductivity and cold atom superfluidity. For superconductors, ultra-low doping systems like graphene and Li x ZrNCl successfully approached the crossover starting from the BCS-side. These superconductors offer new opportunities to clarify the nature of charged-particles transport towards the BEC regime. Here we report the study of vortex dynamics within the crossover using their Hall effect as a probe in Li x ZrNCl. We observed a systematic enhancement of the Hall angle towards the BCS-BEC crossover, which was qualitatively reproduced by the phenomenological time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) theory. Li x ZrNCl exhibits a band structure free from various electronic instabilities, allowing us to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the vortex Hall effect and thereby propose a global picture of vortex dynamics within the crossover. A proximity effect at a van der Waals (vdW) interface enables creation of an emergent quantum electronic ground state. Here we demonstrate that an originally superconducting two-dimensional (2D) NbSe 2 forms a ferromagnetic ground state with spontaneous spin polarization at a vdW interface with a 2D ferromagnet V 5 Se 8 . We investigated the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of the NbSe 2 /V 5 Se 8 magnetic vdW heterostructures, and found that the sign of the AHE was reversed as the number of the V 5 Se 8 layer was thinned down to the monolayer limit. Interestingly, the AHE signal of those samples was enhanced with the in-plane magnetic fields, suggesting an additional contribution to the AHE signal other than magnetization. This unusual behavior is well reproduced by band structure calculations, where the emergence of the Berry curvature along the spin-degenerate nodal lines in 2D NbSe 2 by the in-plane magnetization plays a key role, unveiling a unique interplay between magnetism and Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction in a non-centrosymmetric 2D quantum material., (© 2022. Nonreciprocal or even-order nonlinear responses in symmetry-broken systems are powerful probes of emergent properties in quantum materials, including superconductors, magnets, and topological materials. Recently, vortex matter has been recognized as a key ingredient of giant nonlinear responses in superconductors with broken inversion symmetry. However, nonlinear effects have been probed as excess voltage only under broken time-reversal symmetry. In this study, we report second harmonic transport under time-reversal symmetry in the noncentrosymmetric trigonal superconductor PbTaSe 2 . The magnitude of anomalous nonlinear transport is two orders of magnitude larger than those in the normal state, and the directional dependence of nonlinear signals are fully consistent with crystal symmetry. The enhanced nonlinearity is semiquantitatively explained by the asymmetric Hall effect of vortex-antivortex string pairs in noncentrosymmetric systems. Material structures containing tetrahedral FeAs bonds, depending on their density and geometrical distribution, can host several competing quantum ground states ranging from superconductivity to ferromagnetism. Here we examine structures of quasi two-dimensional (2D) layers of tetrahedral Fe-As bonds embedded with a regular interval in a semiconductor InAs matrix, which resembles the crystal structure of Fe-based superconductors. Contrary to the case of Fe-based pnictides, these FeAs/InAs superlattices (SLs) exhibit ferromagnetism, whose Curie temperature (T C ) increases rapidly with decreasing the InAs interval thickness t InAs (T C ∝ t InAs -3 ), and an extremely large magnetoresistance up to 500% that is tunable by a gate voltage. Our first principles calculations reveal the important role of disordered positions of Fe atoms in the establishment of ferromagnetism in these quasi-2D FeAs-based SLs. These unique features mark the FeAs/InAs SLs as promising structures for spintronic applications.

The Great Oxygenation Event (GOE), ca. 2.4 billion years ago, transformed life and environments on Earth. Its causes, however, are debated. We mathematically analyze the GOE in terms of ecological dynamics coupled with a changing Earth. Anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria initially dominate over cyanobacteria, but their success depends on the availability of suitable electron donors that are vulnerable to oxidation. The GOE is triggered when the difference between the influxes of relevant reductants and phosphate falls below a critical value that is an increasing function of the reproductive rate of cyanobacteria. The transition can be either gradual and reversible or sudden and irreversible, depending on sources and sinks of oxygen. Increasing sources and decreasing sinks of oxygen can also trigger the GOE, but this possibility depends strongly on migration of cyanobacteria from privileged sites. Our model links ecological dynamics to planetary change, with geophysical evolution determining the relevant time scales.

The thermoelectric effect is attracting a renewed interest as a concept for energy harvesting technologies. Nanomaterials have been considered a key to realize efficient thermoelectric conversions owing to the low dimensional charge and phonon transports. In this regard, recently emerging two-dimensional materials could be promising candidates with novel thermoelectric functionalities. Here we report that FeSe ultrathin films, a high-T c superconductor (T c ; superconducting transition temperature), exhibit superior thermoelectric responses. With decreasing thickness d, the electrical conductivity increases accompanying the emergence of high-T c superconductivity; unexpectedly, the Seebeck coefficient α shows a concomitant increase as a result of the appearance of two-dimensional natures. When d is reduced down to ~1 nm, the thermoelectric power factor at 50 K and room temperature reach unprecedented values as high as 13,000 and 260 μW cm -1 K -2 , respectively. The large thermoelectric effect in high T c superconductors indicates the high potential of two-dimensional layered materials towards multi-functionalization.

Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition sparks. Laser-produced relativistic electron beam (REB) deposits a part of kinetic energy in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, due to the inherent large angular spread of the produced REB, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core. Here, we demonstrate a factor-of-two enhancement of laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation zone to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. This scheme may provide more efficient energy coupling compared to the conventional ICF scheme.

The decoy effect is a cognitive bias documented in behavioural economics by which the presence of a third, (partly) inferior choice causes a significant shift in people's preference for other items. Here, we performed an experiment with human volunteers who played a variant of the repeated prisoner's dilemma game in which the standard options of "cooperate" and "defect" are supplemented with a new, decoy option, "reward". We show that although volunteers rarely chose the decoy option, its availability sparks a significant increase in overall cooperativeness and improves the likelihood of success for cooperative individuals in this game. The presence of the decoy increased willingness of volunteers to cooperate in the first step of each game, leading to subsequent propagation of such willingness by (noisy) tit-for-tat. Our study thus points to decoys as a means to elicit voluntary prosocial action across a spectrum of collective endeavours.

Superconductor-insulator transition is one of the remarkable phenomena driven by quantum fluctuation in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Such a quantum phase transition (QPT) was investigated predominantly on highly disordered thin films with amorphous or granular structures using scaling law with constant exponents. Here, we provide a totally different view of QPT in highly crystalline 2D superconductors. According to the magneto-transport measurements in 2D superconducting ZrNCl and MoS 2 , we found that the quantum metallic state commonly observed at low magnetic fields is converted via the quantum Griffiths state to the weakly localized metal at high magnetic fields. The scaling behavior, characterized by the diverging dynamical critical exponent (Griffiths singularity), indicates that the quantum fluctuation manifests itself as superconducting puddles, in marked contrast to the thermal fluctuation. We suggest that an evolution from the quantum metallic to the quantum Griffiths state is generic nature in highly crystalline 2D superconductors with weak pinning potentials.

In state-of-the-art silicon devices, mobility of the carrier is enhanced by the lattice strain from the back substrate. Such an extra control of device performance is significant in realizing high-performance computing and should be valid for electric-field-induced superconducting (SC) devices, too. However, so far, the carrier density is the sole parameter for field-induced SC interfaces. Here we show an active organic SC field-effect transistor whose lattice is modulated by the strain from the substrate. The soft organic lattice allows tuning of the strain by a choice of the back substrate to make an induced SC state accessible at low temperature with a paraelectric solid gate. An active three-terminal Josephson junction device thus realized is useful both in advanced computing and in elucidating a direct connection between filling-controlled and bandwidth-controlled SC phases in correlated materials.

Electrical manipulation and read-out of quantum states in zero-dimensional nanostructures by nano-gap metal electrodes is expected to bring about innovation in quantum information processing. However, electrical tunability of the quantum states in zero-dimensional nanostructures is limited by the screening of gate electric fields. Here we demonstrate a new way to realize wide-range electrical modulation of quantum states of single self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) with a liquid-gated electric-double-layer (EDL) transistor geometry. The efficiency of EDL gating is 6-90 times higher than that of the conventional solid gating. The quantized energy level spacing is modulated from ~15 to ~25 meV, and the electron g-factor is electrically tuned over a wide range. Such a field effect tuning can be explained by the modulation in the confinement potential of electrons in the QDs. The EDL gating on the QDs also provides potential compatibility with optical manipulation of single-electron charge/spin states.
