Abstract Distributing quantum entanglement between distant parties is a significant but difficult task in quantum information science, as it can enable numerous applications but suffers from exponential decay in the quantum channel. Quantum repeaters are one of the most promising approaches towards this goal. In a quantum repeater protocol, it is essential that the entanglement generation speed within each elementary link is faster than the memory decoherence rate, and this stringent requirement has not been implemented over a fiber of metropolitan scale so far. As a step towards this challenging goal, in this work we experimentally realize multiplexing-enhanced generation of heralded atom-photon quantum correlation over a 12 km fiber. We successively generate 280 pairs of atom-photon quantum correlations with a train of photonic time-bin pulses filling the long fiber, and read out the excited memory modes on demand with either fixed or variable storage time after successful heralding. With the multiplexing enhancement, the heralding rate of atom-photon correlation can reach 1.95 kHz, and the ratio between the quantum correlation generation rate to memory decoherence rate can be improved to 0.46 for a fiber length of 12 km. This work therefore constitutes an important step towards the realization of a large-scale quantum repeater network.

Abstract Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters provide an ideal platform for investigating photoredox catalysis. The central challenge is balancing their stability and catalytic activity. Here we show a photochemical reduction–oxidation cascade method for synthesizing an Au8Cu6 nanocluster, which features a robust structure and active surface. Photoredox catalytic activity of Au8Cu6 is developed for the functionalization of alkynes under oxidative conditions. Mechanism studies based on the precise structure reveal the catalytic process of the Au8Cu6 nanocluster. Oxidant-dependent selectivity of Au8Cu6 catalysis is developed for chemodivergent synthesis of mono- and di-functionalized products in high efficiency. The results will stimulate more research on metal nanocluster synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract Simultaneously improving the activity and stability of catalysts for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) remains a notable challenge. Here, we report a chromium-doped ruthenium dioxide with oxygen vacancies, termed Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x, that drives OER with an overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and operates stably over 2000 h in acidic media. Experimental and theoretical studies show that the synergy of Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy induces an unconventional dopant-mediated hydroxyl spillover mechanism. Such dynamic hydroxyl spillover from Cr dopant to Ru active site changes the rate-determining step from OOH* formation to O2 formation and thus greatly improves the OER performance. Moreover, the Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy also play a crucial role in stabilizing surface Ru and lattice oxygen in the Ru-O-Cr structural motif. When assembled into the anode of a practical PEMWE device, Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x enables long-term durability of over 200 h at an ampere-level current density and 60 degrees centigrade.

Abstract Optical spectrometers are essential tools for analysing light‒matter interactions, but conventional spectrometers can be complicated and bulky. Recently, efforts have been made to develop miniaturized spectrometers. However, it is challenging to overcome the trade-off between miniaturizing size and retaining performance. Here, we present a complementary metal oxide semiconductor image sensor-based miniature computational spectrometer using a plasmonic nanoparticles-in-cavity microfilter array. Size-controlled silver nanoparticles are directly printed into cavity-length-varying Fabry‒Pérot microcavities, which leverage strong coupling between the localized surface plasmon resonance of the silver nanoparticles and the Fabry‒Pérot microcavity to regulate the transmission spectra and realize large-scale arrayed spectrum-disparate microfilters. Supported by a machine learning-based training process, the miniature computational spectrometer uses artificial intelligence and was demonstrated to measure visible-light spectra at subnanometre resolution. The high scalability of the technological approaches shown here may facilitate the development of high-performance miniature optical spectrometers for extensive applications.

Abstract Cross-dehydrogenative coupling of C(sp3)-H bonds is an ideal approach for C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond construction. However, conventional approaches mainly rely on a single activation mode by either stoichiometric oxidants or electrochemical oxidation, which would lead to inferior selectivity in the reaction between similar C(sp3)-H bonds. Herein we describe our development of a paired electrocatalysis strategy to access an unconventional selectivity in the cross-dehydrogenative coupling of alcoholic α C(sp3)-H with allylic (or benzylic) C-H bonds, which combines hydrogen evolution reaction catalysis with hydride transfer catalysis. To maximize the synergistic effect of the catalyst combinations, a HER catalyst pentacoordinated Co-salen is disclosed. The catalyst displays a large redox-potential gap (1.98 V) and suitable redox potential. With the optimized catalyst combination, an electrochemical cross-dehydrogenative coupling protocol features unconventional chemoselectivity (C-C vs. C-O coupling), excellent functional group tolerance (84 examples), valuable byproduct (hydrogen), and high regio- and site-selectivity. A plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed to rationalize the experimental observations.

Abstract Establishing appropriate metal-support interactions is imperative for acquiring efficient and corrosion-resistant catalysts for water splitting. Herein, the interaction mechanism between Ru nanoparticles and a series of titanium oxides, including TiO, Ti4O7 and TiO2, designed via facile non-stoichiometric engineering is systematically studied. Ti4O7, with the unique band structure, high conductivity and chemical stability, endows with ingenious metal-support interaction through interfacial Ti–O–Ru units, which stabilizes Ru species during OER and triggers hydrogen spillover to accelerate HER kinetics. As expected, Ru/Ti4O7 displays ultralow overpotentials of 8 mV and 150 mV for HER and OER with a long operation of 500 h at 10 mA cm−2 in acidic media, which is expanded in pH-universal environments. Benefitting from the excellent bifunctional performance, the proton exchange membrane and anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with Ru/Ti4O7 achieves superior performance and robust operation. The work paves the way for efficient energy conversion devices.

Abstract Living in the global-changing era, intelligent and eco-friendly electronic components that can sense the environment and recycle or reprogram when needed are essential for sustainable development. Compared with solid-state electronics, composite hydrogels with multi-functionalities are promising candidates. By bridging the self-assembly of azobenzene-containing supramolecular complexes and MXene nanosheets, we fabricate a MXene-based composite gel, namely MXenegel, with reversible photo-modulated phase behavior. The MXenegel can undergo reversible liquefication and solidification under UV and visible light irradiations, respectively, while maintaining its conductive nature unchanged, which can be integrated into traditional solid-state circuits. The strategy presented in this work provides an example of light-responsive conducting material via supramolecular bridging and demonstrates an exciting platform for functional soft electronics.

Abstract Immune checkpoints play key roles in maintaining self-tolerance. Targeted potentiation of the checkpoint molecule PD-L1 through in situ manipulation offers clinical promise for patients with autoimmune diseases. However, the therapeutic effects of these approaches are often compromised by limited specificity and inadequate expression. Here, we report a two-step dual-anchor coupling strategy for enhanced immobilization of PD-L1 on target endogenous cells by integrating bioorthogonal chemistry and physical insertion of the cell membrane. In both type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis mouse models, we demonstrate that this approach leads to elevated and sustained conjugation of PD-L1 on target cells, resulting in significant suppression of autoreactive immune cell activation, recruitment of regulatory T cells, and systematic reshaping of the immune environment. Furthermore, it restores glucose homeostasis in type 1 diabetic mice for over 100 days. This specific in situ bioengineering approach potentiates the functions of PD-L1 and represents its translational potential.

Abstract The interphase genome is dynamically organized in the nucleus and decorated with chromatin-associated RNA (caRNA). It remains unclear whether the genome architecture modulates the spatial distribution of caRNA and vice versa. Here, we generate a resource of genome-wide RNA-DNA and DNA-DNA contact maps in human cells. These maps reveal the chromosomal domains demarcated by locally transcribed RNA, hereafter termed RNA-defined chromosomal domains. Further, the spreading of caRNA is constrained by the boundaries of topologically associating domains (TADs), demonstrating the role of the 3D genome structure in modulating the spatial distribution of RNA. Conversely, stopping transcription or acute depletion of RNA induces thousands of chromatin loops genome-wide. Activation or suppression of the transcription of specific genes suppresses or creates chromatin loops straddling these genes. Deletion of a specific caRNA-producing genomic sequence promotes chromatin loops that straddle the interchromosomal target sequences of this caRNA. These data suggest a feedback loop where the 3D genome modulates the spatial distribution of RNA, which in turn affects the dynamic 3D genome organization.

Abstract Every animal secretes mucus, placing them among the most diverse biological materials. Mucus hydrogels are complex mixtures of water, ions, carbohydrates, and proteins. Uncertainty surrounding their composition and how interactions between components contribute to mucus function complicates efforts to exploit their properties. There is substantial interest in commercializing mucus from the garden snail, Cornu aspersum, for skincare, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and composite materials. C. aspersum secretes three mucus—one shielding the animal from environmental threats, one adhesive mucus from the pedal surface of the foot, and another pedal mucus that is lubricating. It remains a mystery how compositional differences account for their substantially different properties. Here, we characterize mucus proteins, glycosylation, ion content, and mechanical properties that could be used to provide insight into structure-function relationships through an integrative “mucomics” approach. We identify macromolecular components of these hydrogels, including a previously unreported protein class termed Conserved Anterior Mollusk Proteins (CAMPs). Revealing differences between C. aspersum mucus shows how considering structure at all levels can inform the design of mucus-inspired materials.

Abstract The sole situation of semi-crystalline structure induced single performance remarkably limits the green cryogels in the application of soft devices due to uncontrolled freezing field. Here, a facile strategy for achieving multifunctionality of cryogels is proposed using total amorphization of polymer. Through precisely lowering the freezing point of precursor solutions with an antifreezing salt, the suppressed growth of ice is achieved, creating an unusually weak and homogenous aggregation of polymer chains upon freezing, thereby realizing the tunable amorphization of polymer and the coexistence of free and hydrogen bonding hydroxyl groups. Abstract The investigation of chirality at the nanoscale is important to bridge the gap between molecular and macroscopic chirality. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters provide an ideal platform for this research, while their enantiopure preparation poses a challenge. Here, we describe an efficient approach to enantiopure metal nanoclusters via asymmetric transformation, that is, achiral Au23(SC6H11)16 nanoclusters are converted into chiral and enantiopure Au24(L)2(SC6H11)16 nanoclusters by a chiral inducer phosphoramidite (L). Two enantiomers of Au24(L)2(SC6H11)16 are obtained and the crystal structures reveal their hierarchical chirality, which originates from the two introduced chiral L molecules, the transformation-triggered asymmetric rearrangement of the staple motifs on the surface of the gold core, and the helical arrangement of nanocluster molecules. The construction of this type of enantiomerically pure nanoclusters is achieved based on the easy-to-synthesize and modular L. Lastly, the chirality-related chiroptical performance was investigated, revealing a negative nonlinear CD-ee dependence.

Abstract Effective reprogramming of chronic wound healing remains challenging due to the limited drug delivery efficacy hindered by physiological barriers, as well as the inappropriate dosing timing in distinct healing stages. Herein, a core-shell structured microneedle array patch with programmed functions (PF-MNs) is designed to dynamically modulate the wound immune microenvironment according to the varied healing phases. Specifically, PF-MNs combat multidrug-resistant bacterial biofilm at the early stage via generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under laser irradiation. Subsequently, the ROS-sensitive MN shell gradually degrades to expose the MN core component, which neutralizes various inflammatory factors and promotes the phase transition from inflammation to proliferation. In addition, the released verteporfin inhibits scar formation by blocking Engrailed-1 (En1) activation in fibroblasts. Our experiments demonstrate that PF-MNs promote scarless wound repair in mouse models of both acute and chronic wounds, and inhibit the formation of hypertrophic scar in rabbit ear models.

Chronic mitochondrial stress associates with major neurodegenerative diseases. Recovering stressed mitochondria constitutes a critical step of mitochondrial quality control and thus energy maintenance in early stages of neurodegeneration. Here, we reveal Mul1-Mfn2 pathway that maintains neuronal mitochondrial integrity under stress conditions. Mul1 deficiency increases Mfn2 activity that triggers the first phasic mitochondrial hyperfusion and also acts as an ER-Mito tethering antagonist. Reduced ER-Mito coupling leads to increased cytoplasmic Ca 2+ load that activates calcineurin and induces the second phasic Drp1-dependent mitochondrial fragmentation and mitophagy. Overexpressing Mfn2, but not Mfn1, mimics Mul1-deficient phenotypes, while expressing PTPIP51, an ER-Mito anchoring protein, suppresses Parkin-mediated mitophagy. Thus, by regulating mitochondrial morphology and ER-Mito contacts, Mul1-Mfn2 pathway plays an early checkpoint role in maintaining mitochondrial integrity. Our study provides new mechanistic insights into neuronal mitochondrial maintenance under stress conditions, which is relevant to several major neurodegenerative diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and altered ER-Mito interplay.
