Purpose. This article examines options available for Ukraine as the country considers proposals to reform and restructure Ukrzaliznytsia. Methodology. The basic restructuring options observed internationally are presented, and the literature concerning their impacts and effectiveness is reviewed. Findings. The creation of competition among freight train companies has been found to improve system performance, but the EU policy prescription of complete vertical separation may not be required in order to achieve this. The Americas-style policy of horizontal separation has also been found to improve system performance, and may be more appropriate for a country as large as Ukraine and a railway as dependent on freight operations as Ukrzaliznytsia. Originality. Most of the literature on railways restructuring focuses on vertical separation or third party access, while the focus here is on a policy option arguably more appropriate to Ukraine. Practical value. Ukraine’s economy is dependent on the efficient shipment of bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, steel, and grains – commodities that travel most economically over long distances by rail. The successful reform and restructuring of Ukrzaliznytsia will be a crucial part of Ukrainian economic reforms going forward.

Purpose. The movement of rail transport (speed rolling stock, traffic safety, etc.) is largely dependent on the quality of the track. In this case, a special role is the transition curve, which ensures smooth insertion of the transition from linear to circular section of road. The article deals with modeling of spatial transition curve based on the parabolic distribution of the curvature and torsion. This is a continuation of research conducted by the authors regarding the spatial modeling of curved contours. Methodology. Construction of the spatial transition curve is numerical methods for solving nonlinear integral equations, where the initial data are taken coordinate the starting and ending points of the curve of the future, and the inclination of the tangent and the deviation of the curve from the tangent plane at these points. System solutions for the numerical method are the partial derivatives of the equations of the unknown parameters of the law of change of torsion and length of the transition curve. Findings. The parametric equations of the spatial transition curve are calculated by finding the unknown coefficients of the parabolic distribution of the curvature and torsion, as well as the spatial length of the transition curve. Originality. A method for constructing the spatial transition curve is devised, and based on this software geometric modeling spatial transition curves of railway track with specified deviations of the curve from the tangent plane. Practical value. The resulting curve can be applied in any sector of the economy, where it is necessary to ensure a smooth transition from linear to circular section of the curved space bypass. An example is the transition curve in the construction of the railway line, road, pipe, profile, flat section of the working blades of the turbine and compressor, the ship, plane, car, etc.

In the article the issues of increasing the possibilities of computer modeling of the dynamic interaction of bridge constructions and their infrastructure with moving transport and flows are considered.

The history of development of electrification of railways in the world, Russia and Ukraine is considered. The specific amount of transportations on electrified lines is presented. The main ideas of determination of economic efficiency for electrification of railways are substantiated.

The article is devoted to consideration of basic models of choice of marketing competition and business strategy directed on forming of set of competitive advantages of railway transport, providing and defense of competitively attractive positions at the market of transport services for population. The practical aspects of these problems are represented in the article too.

In this article we have touched the problem of high freight traffic of the main railway lines ofUkraine. The analysis of the present condition of these lines is given and their technical equipment is described. The main undertakings directed towards increasing the traffic and carrying capacity of the railways are also considered. The dynamics of the wagon traffic volume and train mass changes related to the mentioned lines over the past years is presented. The possible measures which should secure minimum costs for the wide usage of the trains of increased mass and length are also considered and planed.

The structure of the insert of direct current on the traction substation, which makes it possible to remove a number of deficiencies in the acting feeding scheme of the overhead electric transport power line of alternating current, is proposed. Additional possibilities on improvement in the use of electrical equipment by change in the form of voltage in the overhead electric transport power line are analyzed.
