Functional MRI (fMRI) at 7T and above provides improved Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Contrast-to-Noise Ratio compared to 3T acquisitions. In addition to the beneficial effects on spin polarization and magnetization of deoxyhemoglobin, the increased applied field also further magnetizes air and tissue. While the magnets themselves typically provide a static B0 field with sufficient spatial homogeneity, the diamagnetism of tissue and the paramagnetism of air causes local field deviations inside the human head. These spatially-varying field offsets (ΔB0) cause image artifacts, especially in single shot EPI, including geometric distortion, signal dropout, and blurring. These effects are particularly strong near air-tissue interfaces such as the frontal sinus, and ear canals. Furthermore, if the field offsets are dynamically modulated through physiological processes such as respiration or motion, then the effect on the image time-series can be even more problematic. While post-processing methods have been developed to mitigate these effects, the ideal solution would be to reduce the ΔB0 variations at their source. Typically 7T scanners contain 2nd and some 3rd order spherical harmonic shim coil terms to cancel static ΔB0 variations of low spatial order. In this article, we will motivate the need for improved, higher-order compensation for B0 inhomogeneity and potentially add dynamic control of these fields. We discuss and compare several promising hardware approaches for static and dynamic B0 shimming using either higher-order spherical harmonic shim coils or multi-coil shim arrays as well as passive shimming approaches, and active variants such and adaptive current networks.

Ultra High Field (UHF) MRI requires improved gradient and shim performance to fully realize the promised gains (SNR as well as spatial, spectral, diffusion resolution) that higher main magnetic fields offer. Both the more challenging UHF environment by itself, as well as the higher currents used in high performance coils, require a deeper understanding combined with sophisticated engineering modeling and construction, to optimize gradient and shim hardware for safe operation and for highest image quality. This review summarizes the basics of gradient and shim technologies, and outlines a number of UHF-related challenges and solutions. In particular, Lorentz forces, vibroacoustics, eddy currents, and peripheral nerve stimulation are discussed. Several promising UHF-relevant gradient concepts are described, including insertable gradient coils aimed at higher performance neuroimaging.

Susceptibility-induced static field (B0) inhomogeneity near the nasal cavity degrades high-field MRI image quality. Many studies have addressed this problem by hardware- or sequence-based methods to improve local B0 shimming or minimize the impact of inhomogeneity. Here, we investigate the feasibility of the head-tilted brain scan as an easily accessible way to reduce B0 inhomogeneity and associated gradient echo signal loss in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). We exploit the fact that the region of intense local B0 gradient can be steered away from the PFC by head reorientation with respect to the main magnetic field. We found that the required chin-up head tilting by a substantial angle (> 30°) can be readily achieved for a group of healthy subjects when their back was raised by about 10 cm. Eleven subjects were scanned at 3T, using a standard 20 channel head-neck coil, for whole-head B0 mapping and gradient-echo EPI-based functional MRI (fMRI) performing a reward-punishment task in normal and tilted head orientations. Additionally, multi-echo gradient echo and resting-state fMRI scans were performed on six subjects in both orientations. Head-tilted sessions, which lasted for at least 20 min, were well-tolerated by all subjects and demonstrated a marked reduction of localized signal loss in the gradient echo-based images and EPI images in the PFC compared to normal orientation scans. Imaging in tilted orientation reduced the group-averaged B0 standard deviation and peak B0 gradient in the orbital gyrus beyond what was possible with simulated 3rd order shimming. The behavioral performance in the head-tilted fMRI scans indicated that the subjects were able to perform a cognitive task with little difficulty, and the tilted fMRI scans successfully produced a robust whole-brain functional activation map consistent with the literature. Our study proposes that the back-raised, head-tilted imaging can benefit the shimming of the prefrontal brain regions while being compatible with moderate-length neuroimaging scans on healthy, cooperating subjects.

Gradient-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) is the primary method of choice in functional MRI and other methods relying on fast MRI to image brain activation and connectivity. However, the high susceptibility of EPI towards B0 magnetic field inhomogeneity poses serious challenges. Conventional magnetic field shimming with low-order spherical harmonic (SH) functions is capable of compensating shallow field distortions, but performs poorly for global brain shimming or on specific areas with strong susceptibility-induced B0 distortions such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Excellent B0 homogeneity has been demonstrated recently in the human brain at 7 Tesla with the DYNAmic Multi-coIl TEchnique (DYNAMITE) for magnetic field shimming (J Magn Reson (2011) 212:280-288). Here, we report the benefits of DYNAMITE shimming for multi-slice EPI and T2* mapping. A standard deviation of 13Hz was achieved for the residual B0 distribution in the human brain at 7 Tesla with DYNAMITE shimming and was 60% lower compared to conventional shimming that employs static zero through third order SH shapes. The residual field inhomogeneity with SH shimming led to an average 8mm shift at acquisition parameters commonly used for fMRI and was reduced to 1.5-3mm with DYNAMITE shimming. T2* values obtained from the prefrontal and temporal cortices with DYNAMITE shimming were 10-50% longer than those measured with SH shimming. The reduction of the confounding macroscopic B0 field gradients with DYNAMITE shimming thereby promises improved access to the relevant microscopic T2* effects. The combination of high spatial resolution and DYNAMITE shimming allows largely artifact-free EPI and T2* mapping throughout the brain, including prefrontal and temporal lobe areas. DYNAMITE shimming is expected to critically benefit a wide range of MRI applications that rely on excellent B0 magnetic field conditions including EPI-based fMRI to study various cognitive processes and assessing large-scale brain connectivity in vivo. As such, DYNAMITE shimming has the potential to replace conventional SH shim systems in human MR scanners.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) are the major neurotransmitters in the brain. They are crucial for the functioning of healthy brain and their alteration is a major mechanism in the pathophysiology of many neuro-psychiatric disorders. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is the only way to measure GABA and Glu non-invasively in vivo. GABA detection is particularly challenging and requires special MRS techniques. The most popular is MEscher-GArwood (MEGA) difference editing with single-voxel Point RESolved Spectroscopy (PRESS) localization. This technique has three major limitations: a) MEGA editing is a subtraction technique, hence is very sensitive to scanner instabilities and motion artifacts. b) PRESS is prone to localization errors at high fields (≥3T) that compromise accurate quantification. c) Single-voxel spectroscopy can (similar to a biopsy) only probe steady GABA and Glu levels in a single location at a time. To mitigate these problems, we implemented a 3D MEGA-editing MRS imaging sequence with the following three features: a) Real-time motion correction, dynamic shim updates, and selective reacquisition to eliminate subtraction artifacts due to scanner instabilities and subject motion. b) Localization by Adiabatic SElective Refocusing (LASER) to improve the localization accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio. c) K-space encoding via a weighted stack of spirals provides 3D metabolic mapping with flexible scan times. Simulations, phantom and in vivo experiments prove that our MEGA-LASER sequence enables 3D mapping of GABA+ and Glx (Glutamate+Gluatmine), by providing 1.66 times larger signal for the 3.02ppm multiplet of GABA+ compared to MEGA-PRESS, leading to clinically feasible scan times for 3D brain imaging. Hence, our sequence allows accurate and robust 3D-mapping of brain GABA+ and Glx levels to be performed at clinical 3T MR scanners for use in neuroscience and clinical applications.

The full potential of magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is often limited by localization artifacts, motion-related artifacts, scanner instabilities, and long measurement times. Localized adiabatic selective refocusing (LASER) provides accurate B1-insensitive spatial excitation even at high magnetic fields. Spiral encoding accelerates MRSI acquisition, and thus, enables 3D-coverage without compromising spatial resolution. Real-time position- and shim/frequency-tracking using MR navigators correct motion- and scanner instability-related artifacts. Each of these three advanced MRI techniques provides superior MRSI data compared to commonly used methods. In this work, we integrated in a single pulse sequence these three promising approaches. Real-time correction of motion, shim, and frequency-drifts using volumetric dual-contrast echo planar imaging-based navigators were implemented in an MRSI sequence that uses low-power gradient modulated short-echo time LASER localization and time efficient spiral readouts, in order to provide fast and robust 3D-MRSI in the human brain at 3T. The proposed sequence was demonstrated to be insensitive to motion- and scanner drift-related degradations of MRSI data in both phantoms and volunteers. Motion and scanner drift artifacts were eliminated and excellent spectral quality was recovered in the presence of strong movement. Our results confirm the expected benefits of combining a spiral 3D-LASER-MRSI sequence with real-time correction. The new sequence provides accurate, fast, and robust 3D metabolic imaging of the human brain at 3T. This will further facilitate the use of 3D-MRSI for neuroscience and clinical applications.

Important functions of the central nervous system such as sensory processing and motor execution, involve the spinal cord. Recent advances in human functional MRI have allowed to investigate spinal cord neuronal processes using the blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast. However, to assess the functional connectivity between the brain and the spinal cord, functional MRI measurements covering both regions in the same experiment are required. Unfortunately, the ideal MRI setup differs considerably for the brain and the spinal cord with respect to resolution, field-of-view, relevant receive coils, and, in particular, shim adjustments required to minimize distortion artifacts. Here, these issues are addressed for combined T2*-weighted MRI measurements of the human brain and the cervical spinal cord by using adapted parameter settings (field-of-view, in-plane resolution, slice thickness, and receiver bandwidth) for each region, a dynamic receive coil element selection where for each slice only the elements with significant signal contributions are considered, and, most importantly, the implementation of a dynamic update of the frequency and the linear shims in order to provide shim settings individually adapted to the brain and spinal cord subvolume. The feasibility of this setup for combined measurements is demonstrated in healthy volunteers at 3T. Although geometric distortions are slightly more pronounced and the temporal signal-to-noise ratio is lower as compared to measurements focusing to the brain or spinal cord only, the overall image quality can be expected to be sufficient for combined functional MRI experiments. Thus, the presented approach could help to unravel the functional coupling between the brain and the spinal cord.

A significant problem in the concurrent application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the image artefact caused by the effect of the TMS-coil on the homogeneity of the static magnetic field (B0). The resulting field inhomogeneity can lead to spatial distortions and local signal loss in echo-planar (EP) images. Here we demonstrate that passive shimming using thin patches of austenitic stainless steel can reduce the effect of the TMS-coil on B0 by ~80%, thus essentially eliminating the associated artefact. Initially the effect of the TMS-coil on B0 was measured using the phase of gradient echo images. Consequently the ideal distribution for the steel was simulated using the magnetic properties of the steel and the effects of the TMS-coil. Finally we demonstrate the effect of two different implementations of the passive shim on a spherical phantom and in vivo.

Signal loss in gradient-echo echo planar imaging (GE-EPI) due to susceptibility-induced magnetic field inhomogeneity makes it difficult to assess the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) effect in fMRI investigations. The z-shim method that applies an additional gradient moment is one of the more popular methods of compensating for GE-EPI signal loss. However, this method requires a calibration sweep scan and post-processing to identify the optimal z-shim gradients, which slows down fMRI experiments. This study attempts to decrease the calibration time by introducing a real-time feedback framework. Creating a feedback loop between the image processing and the GE-EPI pulse sequence converts the calibration of z-shim gradients to an optimization problem, which can be accelerated by local search methods. This study proposes an interleaved scan that allows the simultaneous optimization of two z-shim gradient moments and allocates sufficient processing time for networking and computation. The z-shim compensated images obtained by the proposed real-time method are comparable to those created by the sweep method. The optimization procedure for obtaining negative and positive gradient moments generally requires about twenty GE-EPI repetitions. In conclusion, the proposed z-shim method includes an automated real-time framework to achieve a significant reduction in susceptibility-induced signal loss in GE-EPI with a minimal increase in calibration time. The proposed procedure is fully automatic and compatible with conventional GE-EPI and can thus serve as a pre-adjustment module in EPI-based fMRI researches.

The presence of the head in an MRI scanner leads to inhomogeneities in the magnetic field. These cause the 'susceptibility artifacts' of image distortion and signal dropout. In this paper, we evaluate a technique called passive shimming, which has the potential to reduce field inhomogeneities and the resultant artifacts. A piece of a magnetically active material (pyrolytic graphite) is held on the roof of the participant's mouth by a plastic mouth mould. We evaluate the effects in several different ways. We show that the presence of a shim reduces field inhomogeneity across much of the brain. From field maps, we generate simulations of EPI image intensity and BOLD sensitivity. Both of these are mainly improved by the presence of shim, although there were small reductions in some regions. Measured EPI image intensity also mostly increased. Finally, we ran a reward-punishment task in our subjects, and found that the presence of a shim increased functional sensitivity in the orbitofrontal cortex. Using the BOLD sensitivity measure, we provide estimates of the improvement to be expected in functional studies for a range of neural structures. Passive shims are quick to make and reasonably comfortable to wear, and have substantial potential for researchers investigating inferior frontal brain regions using MRI.

This study demonstrates how the rigid body registration parameters for good registration of serially acquired 3-D magnetic resonance images vary systematically when the registration routine is presented with a series of cropped data sets that are systematically positioned throughout the entire volume. The results of the registration of these subcubes are compared with the results of a single registration of the complete volume for two consecutive 3-D scans of the brain of a normal volunteer, with one scan having optimized shim coil currents and the other having all second-order shim coil currents set to zero. The technique is sensitive and able to reveal subvoxel misregistrations.

T2*-weighted imaging of the spinal cord suffers from signal dropouts that hamper blood-oxygenation-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). They are due to field inhomogeneities caused by the different magnetic susceptibilities of the vertebrae and the intervertebral disks that vary periodically along the cord and, thus, cannot be compensated appropriately with conventional (constant) shimming. In this study, a single, slice-specific gradient pulse ("z-shim") is applied in echo-planar imaging of axial sections in order to compensate for the corresponding through-slice signal dephasing without affecting the acquisition time, i.e. the temporal resolution. Based on a reference acquisition sampling a range of compensation moments, the value yielding the maximum signal amplitude within the spinal cord is determined for each slice. Severe N/2 ghosting for larger compensation moments is avoided by applying the gradient pulse after the corresponding reference echoes. Furthermore, first-order flow compensation in the slice direction of both the slice-selection and the z-shim gradient pulse considerably reduces signal fluctuations in the cerebro-spinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord, i.e. would minimize ringing artifacts in fMRI. Phantom and in vivo experiments show the necessity to use slice-specific compensation moments in the presence of local susceptibility differences. Measurements performed in a group of 24 healthy volunteers at 3T demonstrate that this approach improves T2*-weighted imaging of axial sections of the cervical spinal cord by (i) increasing the signal intensity (overall by about 20%) and (ii) reducing signal intensity variations along the cord (by about 80%). Thus, it may help to improve the feasibility and reliability of fMRI of the spinal cord. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

At higher static magnetic field (B(0)) strengths (>/=3 T), the study of human inferior frontal cortex (IFC) when utilising a variety of MRI techniques is severely hampered by the presence of susceptibility artifacts. This is particularly the case for blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI, where large signal voids are generally encountered in the frontal lobes. A previous study described an approach to artifact correction involving a mouth insert consisting of a prototype diamagnetic passive shim [Magn. Reson. Med. 48 (2002), 906]. Here we extend that method by investigating the effect of five different intraoral passive shims on B(0) homogeneity and echoplanar imaging susceptibility artifacts within the brain, and particularly the IFC, of six subjects. The optimal passive shim is shown to be subject- and study-specific, providing an average reduction in mean absolute B(0) offset within the IFC of 57%, along with a concomitant reduction in echoplanar susceptibility artifact. All subjects were at ease while wearing the intraoral shims. A 4-min in vivo protocol to determine the optimal passive shim from the available set, utilising intrinsic structural and B(0) subject data, is described and shown to be accurate and reliable.

A new single-shot echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence with interleaved z-shim and optimized compensation for susceptibility-induced signal loss is proposed in this paper. Experiments on human brain demonstrated that the new method is able to regain signal dropout in brain areas with severe susceptibility-induced local gradients, while its image acquisition speed is comparable to that of conventional single-shot EPI techniques. Significant signal-to-noise ratio improvements were demonstrated in the ventral prefrontal and lateral temporal lobes with the new technique compared to a conventional EPI. Brain activation experiments with a bilateral finger-tapping task were performed with intentionally introduced local gradients near the left sensorimotor cortex, by a small gadolinium (Gd)-doped bottle placed on the left side of the head. The results of the functional experiments showed that the interleaved z-shim EPI sequence effectively recovered the signal loss caused by the Gd-doped bottle and reliably detected activation signals in bilateral sensorimotor regions, while the activation signals on the left side diminished considerably in a conventional EPI technique. The new technique, with the capability of reducing susceptibility artifacts and rapid scanning speed, may be particularly useful for event-related functional MRI experiments in the base of the brain, which are of great importance in neuropsychiatric studies.

The aim of this novel technique is to allow researchers, particularly those operating at high static magnetic field strengths on fMRI applications, to tailor the static magnetic field within the brain. The optimum solution for their experimental needs is reached, utilizing the full potential of the active shims at their disposal. The method for shimming human brain, which incorporates automatic brain segmentation to remove nonbrain tissue from the optimization routine, is presented and validated. The technique is fast, robust, and accurate, achieving the global minimum to a static field homogeneity function of the in vivo brain. Both global and specified local regions of the brain can be selected on which to optimize the shims without requiring skilled intervention. The effectiveness of the automated local shim is demonstrated in an olfactory fMRI study where significant activations in the orbitofrontal cortex were very clear when the above method was employed.

Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy of the spinal cord stand to benefit greatly from the increased signal-to-noise ratio of ultra-high field. However, ultra-high field also poses considerable technical challenges, especially related to static and dynamic B0 fields. Breathing causes the field to fluctuate with the respiratory cycle, giving rise to artifacts such as ghosting and apparent motion in images. We here investigated the spatial and temporal characteristics of breathing-induced B0 fields in the cervical spinal cord at 7T. We analyzed the magnitude and spatial profile of breathing-induced fields during breath-holds in an expired and inspired breathing state. We also measured the temporal field evolution during free breathing by acquiring a time series of fast phase images, and a principal component analysis was performed on the measured field evolution. In all subjects, the field shift was largest around the vertebral level of C7 and lowest at the top of the spinal cord. At C7, we measured peak-to-peak field fluctuations of 36 Hz on average during normal free breathing; increasing to on average 113 Hz during deep breathing. The first principal component could explain more than 90% of the field variations along the foot-head axis inside the spinal cord in all subjects. We further implemented a proof-of-principle shim correction, demonstrating the feasibility of using the shim system to compensate for the breathing-induced fields inside the spinal cord. Effective correction strategies will be crucial to unlock the full potential of ultra-high field for spinal cord imaging.
