BOOKSTORES - Abstract
The article looks at the challenges being faced by Barnes & Noble, the largest bookstore chain in the U.S. The success of competitors such as Amazon and Apple led to the decline in sales of Barnes & Noble. In an effort to improve the company's performance, founder and chairman Leonard Riggio removed Stephen Riggio, who is also his brother, as chief executive officer (CEO). The company also launched its Nook electronic reader, in response to the success of Amazon's Kindle. Billionaire Ronald Burkle also plans a hostile takeover of the company.
