Abstract
When the curtain goes up on ''Smokey Joe's Cafe'' at the Paper Mill Playhouse, four guys are standing casually around a jukebox. They begin singing ''Neighborhood'' (''Faded pictures in my scrapbook/Just thought I'd take one more look'') as the other five cast members stroll onstage and join in. If that setup is a playful reference to the term ''jukebox musical,'' no show has a greater right to use it. The show (full name: ''Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller''), which opened on Broadway in 1995, may have been the first of the genre. Critics didn't think much of the whole idea, but the show ran just short of five years and earned seven Tony Award nominations. The Paper Mill production exhibits all the strengths and weaknesses of the form. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
