There are things in Alexandre O. Philippe's frenetic, paper-thin but entertaining documentary ''The People vs. George Lucas'' that test your patience. When the latter-day ''Star Wars'' movies are likened to child abuse, for example. Or when Mr. Lucas's supposed lack of regard for the feelings of his fans is compared to Holocaust denial. ''The People vs.'' moves so quickly, though, that such moments don't fester. It takes a standard interviews-and-clips approach to the history of ''Star Wars'' fandom, framed by several large and fuzzy issues: what responsibility, if any, Mr. Lucas has to the people who have bought so many light sabers and Han Solo action figures, and whether his later fiddling with the original 1977 film -- not to mention his authorship of its benighted prequels -- is tantamount to criminal activity. The stories of people's reactions on first seeing ''The Phantom Menace'' are a high point, a hilarious outpouring of populist film criticism, as is the inclusion of several French critics defending the character Jar Jar Binks. A couple of weeks ago, H.P. invited me to a preview of 11 new printers, enough to populate a very large boardroom table. I don't normally find printers totally mesmerizing-and I hope you don't either-but two were definitely worthy of a little rubbernecking. For starters, I've never seen a printer like the $249 H.P. Envy 100 e-All-in-One. It looks nothing like a printer: There's no unsightly paper trays or feeders, no awkward pop-up LCDs or even the slightest glimpse of a drive roller. Instead, the Envy 100 looks like a handsomely designed stereo component; all its printer-like mechanisms are tucked inside until you need them. For those who long for but can't afford Georg Jensen's silver hollow-ware, the company has been introducing a few well-known items in stainless steel, in its Masterpieces collection. The latest is the 1302 tray by Verner Panton, a k a the Car Crash tray. ''Our silversmiths always find nicknames for their favorite pieces, and this one became the Car Crash,'' explained Ulrik Garde Due, the chief executive. ''But Panton originally looked at it more as a sheet of paper he was crumpling.'' The stainless-steel version comes in two sizes, about 14 by 17 1/2 inches ($575) and 6 by 7 inches ($125). thoMissPrint, a London company, is introducing new wallpapers in time for summer: Leaves, the latest pattern, joins the already-popular Dandelion Mobile print, which came out last year and is now available in two additional colorways (porcelain with powder blue, shown, and mist green with white). MissPrint's design team, mother and daughter Yvonne and Rebecca Drury, began producing wallpaper, fabric and accessories decorated with hand-drawn patterns in 2005. WHEN the designer Lisa Perry saw the Carl Fischer photograph of Andy Warhol drowning in a sea of soup, she immediately thought to herself, This would be a phenomenal dress. She modeled them after several paper dresses she owned, including a kooky one made by the Campbell Soup Company, a 1960s marketing gimmick that embodied the Pop Art motif of consumer culture. Ms. Perry's dresses, which are made of cotton twill, have the same clean shape and bold graphics ($1,295; later this summer, T-shirts, $100). The last lace mill, MYB Textiles, in the once-appropriately named Scottish town of Newmilns, has collaborated with the Glaswegian design studio Timorous Beasties to create wallpaper based on patterns from the lace maker's archives. Margo Graham, the head designer at MYB, selected the company's perennially popular Lydia, which dates to the 1920s, as the basis for two wallpapers, Rose Damask and Ribbon Damask, above. Ghost Buster, a commode designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell, is a single piece of transparent molded plastic with two open shelves that requires the user to be scrupulously, compulsively, obsessively neat. There is a burning trailer in ''The Burning Plain'' and also a crashing plane. As literal-minded as much of the movie is, we can safely assume that the title is metaphorical. Important symbols are scattered through this film, which opens in theaters nationwide on Friday after spending about a month as a video-on-demand insomnia cure. Sometimes birds take wing and soar through the sky, though they can also be killed by slingshot and roasted on a makeshift grill. There are physical scars that characters display (or inflict on themselves) to make manifest the pain within. A tidy little term paper could be written about the motifs in ''The Burning Plain'' and about the way they wind through a multistranded, chronologically fractured story of loss, guilt, betrayal and general moroseness. Actually, the assignment has already been completed, in the form of Guillermo Arriaga's screenplay. Like his scripts for ''21 Grams'' and ''Babel,'' this one makes heavy use of happenstance and temporal displacement, and like them, too, it depends on ideas about human behavior that can only be called preposterous. Filled with glancing light and happy faces, ''Marina of the Zabbaleen,'' Engi Wassef's compassionate documentary about a poor community of garbage recyclers, fights hard to sweeten the misery of its surroundings. Its success is due in no small part to Rob Hauer's eloquent cinematography, which creeps inside the mind of a child to turn a rat carcass into a shiny toy and mounds of rubbish into a mysterious kingdom. The child in question is 7-year-old Marina, who lives with her family and 30,000 zabbaleen (recyclers) in Muqqattam village in Cairo. Using a model that has been copied worldwide, Marina's family sorts and sells paper (others specialize in plastic or aluminum) under the watchful eye of a witchy neighbor and the constant threat of eviction.
