Reports that the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will offer in January 2005 an academic course called, "Examining 'American Idol' Through Music Critique," which consists of watching the popular television show twice a week and deciding what factors are important in music and music performance.

After a century firmly anchored in Boston, Northeastern University is branching out -- becoming Southeastern, Northwestern and perhaps Western and Midwestern as well. Northeastern, known for its co-op program in which undergraduates spend significant amounts of time in the workplace, opened its first satellite campus this fall in Charlotte, N.C., and is planning a second in Seattle next year; outposts in Austin, Tex., Minnesota and Silicon Valley are under discussion.
