The reluctance -- or outright refusal -- of ostensibly grown men to behave like adults is more than just a favored theme of modern movie comedy. It is an axiom, a principle, a worldview. The varieties of male immaturity seem almost infinite, even if the guys on screen are almost always white, middle class and at least presumptively, if not always successfully, heterosexual. Each of these man-children offers his own special blend of innocence and id, balancing the pitiable traits of slackness and aggression with more appealing qualities of sweetness and honesty. But Jason Segel is special. Oh, I know, they're all special, including Adam Sandler, the puerile granddaddy of them all. The continued success of Adam Sandler -- the audiences who flocked to ''Grown Ups'' can be counted on to show up for his new one, ''Jack and Jill'' -- proves that everyone loves a sore winner. Back in the 1990s, when he was consolidating his stardom and working his id in epochal comedies like ''Billy Madison'' and ''The Waterboy,'' Mr. Sandler's puerile aggression had a naughty, anti-authoritarian kick. His genial hostility was a grinning rebuke to propriety, his brattiness a breath of fresh air in a prim and anxious culture. But now that he has settled into grumpy, dumpy middle age (it takes one to know one is all I'm saying), Mr. Sandler's comedy shows signs of curdling. His most recent feature-length gags are tantrums of entitlement. In ''Jack and Jill,'' as in ''Grown Ups'' (both directed by Dennis Dugan), he plays a guy with a more or less perfect life -- cute kids, cool job, big house, hot wife -- who is grievously annoyed by people variously defined as losers. This expansive category includes anyone who can be mocked for reasons of hygiene, physical appearance or ethnic background, though at the last minute, just to prove what a nice guy he is, Mr. Sandler will substitute condescension for contempt. Two years later Ms. Brown -- who had been born to a 16-year-old and adopted as a toddler -- was tried as an adult, found guilty of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery, and sentenced to life. In this ''Independent Lens'' presentation, Daniel H. Birman follows Ms. Brown, above, for six years, starting the week she was arrested, in the hope of exposing the reasons for violence among youth. What he discovered was a history, seemingly shaped by heredity and circumstance, that had repeated itself through each generation of Ms. Brown's biological family. 5:30 P.M. (Cinemax) FUNNY PEOPLE (2009) In this film from Judd Apatow, Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, a stand-up comedian turned Hollywood star and jerk, who discovers that he has a rare, potentially fatal blood disease. Seth Rogen is Ira, the fledgling comic George hires as an assistant, who for the time being seems only too content to accept scraps from his employer. Mr. Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann, plays Laura, the love who got away from George, and the one he wants back now that he's dying. (The Apatows' daughters play Laura's children.) Writing in The New York Times, Manohla Dargis said there was ''something irritatingly self-satisfied'' about the film, partly stemming from the autobiographical touches. The directorJudd Apatow has temporarily returned to his stand-up roots. Mr. Apatow, the writer and director of ''Knocked Up'' and ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin'' and the producer of ''Superbad'' and the forthcoming ''Pineapple Express,'' was a stand-up comedian for seven years before moving behind the camera in 1992. (He gave up performing, he said in an interview last week, because ''I lacked something very specific: charisma.'') Adam Sandler's production company, Happy Madison, is branching into thrillers with a new division called Scary Madison, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The division's first picture is ''Shortcut,'' about two brothers who find a neglected -- and presumably frightening -- route in their town. Not counting Happy Madison's latest movie, ''You Don't Mess With the Zohan,'' which stars Mr. Sandler and opened on Friday, the company has produced 18 films that have grossed more than $1.1 billion in ticket sales, according to Baseline, an entertainment database. ... Let me be blunt: ''You Don't Mess With the Zohan'' is the finest post-Zionist action-hairdressing sex comedy I have ever seen. Directed by Dennis Dugan from a script by Judd Apatow, Robert Smigel and Adam Sandler (who also stars), ''Zohan'' has its share of scatology, crude sexual humor and queasy homophobia, the basic elements from which male-centered Hollywood comedies are constructed these days. There are supporting roles for stand-up comedians (Ahmed Ahmed, Nick Swardson) and ''Saturday Night Live'' veterans (Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon), a few oddball cameos (Shelley Berman, Chris Rock) and exquisitely random ''as themselves'' appearances by John McEnroe and Mariah Carey. Why not? Less amusingly, there are also some lumpy computer-assisted special effects, an overstuffed plot and a scattering of awkwardly executed gags. But a lot of the crude bodily-function jokes are actually pretty funny, not least because they are supplemented by more hummus-based humor than you might have thought possible. ADAM SANDLER'S comedies can usually be distinguished -- if that's the right word -- by setups so improbable that they border on the ridiculous, from the re-education of a man forced to complete grades 1 through 12 (''Billy Madison'') to the sham gay marriage of two heterosexual firefighters (''I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry''). Yet his latest movie places him in what may be his most improbable scenario to date. In ''You Don't Mess With the Zohan'' (opening June 6), Mr. Sandler plays an Israeli assassin who flees to the United States to become a hairdresser. Trailers for the film promise plenty of broad farce, physical comedy and at least one lewd dance routine. What the ad campaign for ''Zohan'' does not emphasize is that the film also attempts to satirize the continuing tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and provide humorous commentary on one of the least funny topics of modern times with a comedian who is not exactly known for incisive political wit.
