Lake Tennyson's basin and sedimentary record were assessed for multiple branches of paleoenvironmental research. A geophysical investigation of the lake depositional setting was supported by physical and chemical analysis of multiple sediment cores. The basin reaches 60 m depth and several subaerial landforms identified were likely deposited from seismic activity. Deformed sediments and turbidites in gravity cores are attributed to one or more large (pre)historic earthquakes, and episodic grain size changes in sediment cores are related to either seismic and/or climatic/meteorological processes. A hummocky slump deposit located on the western lake bed margin is linked to widespread sediment deformation that was likely caused by movement of the Awatere Fault. Radiocarbon dating constrains the most recent major deformation event between the late thirteenth century CE and mid-twentieth Century. Folded turbidites in the stratigraphy suggest multiple sedimentary deformation episodes occurred during the last millennium. Micro-XRF elemental signatures suggest proxies of past water column mixing (windiness proxy) can be reconstructed via identification of changing redox conditions. Records from Lake Tennyson show potential for several palaeoenvironmental research applications, and combining them with basin morphostratigraphy and land-based palaeoclimate and palaeoseismic evidence can enhance understanding of environmental change in the northern South Island. We use new paleoseismic data and lidar to reassess late Quaternary activity of the NW (northwest) Cardrona Fault, a ∼60 km long range-bounding fault in Otago. Paleoseismic investigations of the NW Cardrona Fault were conducted in the 1980s, but findings were limited by a paucity of materials suitable for dating. Here, re-exposure and re-assessment of a 1980s trench at Macdonalds Creek provide stratigraphic evidence for two surface rupturing earthquakes on the NW Cardrona Fault. Through Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating and OxCal modelling, we estimate these earthquakes occurred at (mean ± 2 standard deviations, σ) 20.5 ± 7.8 ka and 8.7 ± 6.6 ka. The timings of these earthquakes are consistent with those proposed from re-interpretation of another 1980s trench on the NW Cardrona Fault in the Kawarau River valley, ∼25 km farther south. The slip rate and recurrence interval derived from the Macdonalds Creek trench data are 0.13 ± 0.05 mm/yr and 11,800 ± 5100 years (2σ error) respectively. Can a P-wave detection algorithm enhance the performance of an Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS), particularly in community-engaged networks of low-cost ground motion sensors susceptible to noise? If so, what P-wave detection algorithm would perform the best? This study analyses the performance of four different P-wave detection algorithms using a community-engaged Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) network. The ground motion data from a 48-hour time window around a M5.8 earthquake on 22 September 2022 were used as the basis for this case study, where false and missed detections were analysed for each P-wave detection algorithm. The results indicate that a wavelet transformation-based P-wave picker is the most suitable algorithm for detecting an earthquake with minimal missed and false detections for a community-engaged EEWS. Our results show that a citizen seismology-based EEWS is capable of detecting events of interest to EEW when selecting an appropriate earthquake detection algorithm. The study also suggests future research areas for community-engaged EEWSs, including dynamically changing P-wave detection thresholds and improving citizen seismologists’ user experience and involvement. The Hundalee Fault forms part of the southeastern margin of the 2016 Kaikōura Earthquake rupture zone. Its late Quaternary activity and structural character may offer insights to fault interrelationships associated with the 2016 rupture. Mapping of the Hundalee Fault revealed several pre-existing fault scarps. Trenching of a scarp across a fluvial terrace together with radiocarbon dating shows the occurrence of at least two, probably three, surface ruptures since 3.5 ka. The scarp records about 2.5 m of reverse-sense vertical deformation, mostly folding, of which ∼0.6 m occurred in 2016, along with subordinate sinistral slip. Fluvial terrace ages inferred from geomorphological relationships, together with the trenching results, indicate a long-term vertical slip rate of 0.2–0.4 mm/yr since at least 30 ka. Geological data indicate a relatively recently surface emergence of the Hundalee Fault from beneath a fault propagation fold. The 2016 Hundalee Fault rupture is interpreted as a break-out from an extensive blind thrust fault, whose motion triggered predominantly contractional rupture of an array of steeper near-surface faults. The thrust is hypothesised as having provided linkage in the 2016 rupture between the predominantly strike-slip ruptures of The Humps Fault to the southwest and the Kekerengu Fault to the northeast. The 2016 MW 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake nucleated on The Humps fault, which ruptured across the Emu Plain in North Canterbury. The paleoearthquake history of the fault was poorly constrained prior to the 2016 earthquake. To determine the timing and single-event displacements (SED) of earthquakes on the fault we use Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dates of faulted stratigraphy and analysis of faulting (i.e. geometry and slip) at the McLean-1 trench site. At the trench the fault trace trends east–west and primarily accommodated right-lateral strike-slip in 2016 (2 ± 0.2 m strike slip and 0.35 ± 0.05 m vertical slip northside downthrow). The Humps fault is more seismically active than previously thought and accrued slip during at least six surface rupturing paleoearthquakes. The timing of these earthquakes was: 9.8–15.3 ka BP (Event 1), 8.6–11.5 ka BP (Event 2), 8.1–10.9 ka BP (Event 3), 6.0–8.6 ka BP (Event 4), 1840 AD to 4.5 ka (Event 5), and 2016 AD (Event 6). These earthquakes have a mean recurrence interval of 1.8–3.4 kyr and could have recurrence intervals up to ~9 kyr. The Kaikōura Earthquake ruptured a complex network of at least 20 faults in the northeastern South Island, with variable geometries, slip and slip rates. Ground shaking and surface fault rupture generated a tsunami, thousands of landslides, and many dammed rivers. The earthquake damaged farmland, buildings and infrastructure in the northeastern South Island and Wellington regions, closing critical transport networks for over a year. This special issue presents a collection of 12 papers on the earthquake. These papers cover a range of topics, including, the geometries and paleoearthquake histories of faults that ruptured, seismic hazards, the tsunami and coastal geomorphology, together with the societal impact and communication of the earthquake. They incorporate our understanding of the earthquake 5–6 years since it occurred. Despite an unprecedented amount of data and thousands of published papers referring to the earthquake, many key questions remain. These include: is the Hikurangi subduction interface capable of producing great earthquakes beneath the northeastern South Island? Why did the Hope Fault not accommodate significant slip in the earthquake? Has the earthquake changed the seismic hazard in central Aotearoa New Zealand? The north-striking sinistral reverse Papatea Fault ruptured with a very large (up to 12 m) oblique slip as part of the 2016 MW 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake in the northeastern South Island. Paleoseismic studies were undertaken at three sites along the Papatea Fault, named Murray's roadcut, Jacqui's Gully (both on the main strand), and Wharekiri trench (western strand). These sites provide evidence for up to three Late Holocene paleoearthquakes prior to 2016 (=E0) on this previously unmapped active fault, with preferred OxCal-modelled timings of 98–149 (E1), 546–645 cal yr BP (E2), and >738 cal yr BP (E3). Event correlations between the sites are generally consistent across these past events, implying that the two strands of the Papatea Fault link at depth and rupture together co-seismically as in 2016. Comparisons of its paleoseismic record with the Kekerengu Fault and uplift data from Waipapa Bay and Kaikōura, suggest that the Papatea Fault may have three distinct rupture modes: (i) Kaikōura-type multi-fault ruptures with multi-metre, anelastic block displacements and associated major landscape change; (ii) multi-fault earthquake ruptures with other regional fault combinations; and (iii) single-fault Papatea ruptures with metre-scale displacement. The Mw 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake of November 14th, 2016 provided rare opportunities to evaluate ground deformation during a large strike-slip earthquake. Following the earthquake, both halves of a displaced paleoseismic trench were re-excavated and extended to test, refine, and extend the known late Holocene chronology of surface rupturing earthquakes on the Kekerengu Fault. 28 organic-bearing samples were collected during these excavations. Of these, six samples provided new 14C ages that could be superimposed on the preferred age model of (Little VDR, Kearse J, Norton K, Benson A, Wang N. 2018. Kekerengu fault, New Zealand: Timing and size of Late Holocene surface ruptures. Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. 108(3B):1556–1572) to derive an expanded, updated age model of earthquake events on the fault that is now based on 16 dated samples. Including the 2016 earthquake, we recognise six surface rupturing earthquakes on the Kekerengu Fault since ∼2000 cal. B.P. Based on the last five events, our analysis yields an updated estimate of the mean recurrence interval for surface rupturing on the fault of 375 ± 32 yrs (1σ) since ∼1650 cal. B.P. An older, sixth event (E5) was not included in the preferred age model due to uncertainties in interpretation; however, incorporating this event into an alternative, six-event age model would adjust the recurrence interval estimate to 433 ± 22 yrs (1σ) since ∼2000 cal. During the Kaikōura earthquake, a paleoseismic trench was dextrally displaced ∼9 m and shortened by 1.3 ± 0.4 m – the largest globally recorded displacement of a trench. Analysis showed that two processes accommodated subequal amounts of slip at the surface: (1) discrete dextral-slip on two steeply-dipping faults bounding a <3.5 m wide central deformation zone; and (2) coseismic clockwise rotation of turf rafts and pervasive sediment deformation in that zone. The second (successive) process resulted in upward (<1 m) and outward (<2 m) bulging along low-angle thrusts, creating horizontal fault-perpendicular shortening that exceeds the heave (∼1.3 m). This discrepancy results from coseismic rotation of rafts, that shorten upon approaching perpendicularity with the fault – creating extra apparent shortening (in fault-orthogonal view). Comparison of pre- and post-earthquake trench logs indicates that strike-slip ruptures at the same site can be expressed differently over time; fault strands carrying major displacement in 2016 were not the locus of deformation in the previous earthquake(s), suggesting temporal unpredictability is important in defining fault zones. The last several paleoearthquakes at the trench produced cm-dm scale normal-sense dip separations across faults; however, the 2016 earthquake created compressive structures including up-bulging and low-angle reverse faulting, as well as fissuring. This contrast in deformation style likely resulted from an >8° clockwise rotation of the local slip vector in 2016 (becoming transpressive), highlighting that small changes in slip kinematics may affect rupture zone structures. We present the first paleoseismic investigation of the Hyde Fault, one of a series of north-east striking reverse faults within the Otago range and basin province in southern New Zealand. Surface traces of the fault and associated geomorphology were mapped using a lidar digital elevation model and field investigations. Trenches were excavated at two sites across fault scarps on alluvial fan surfaces. The trenches revealed stratigraphic evidence for four surface-rupturing earthquakes. Optically stimulated luminescence dating constrains the timing of these events to around 47.2 ka (37.5–56.7 ka at 95% confidence), 34.6 ka (24.7–46.4 ka), 23.5 ka (19.7–27.3 ka) and 10.5 ka (7.9–13.1 ka). We obtain a mean inter-event time of 12.4 kyr (2.3–23.9 kyr at 95% confidence) and the slip rate is estimated to be 0.22 mm/yr (0.15–0.3 mm/yr). We do not find evidence to suggest that earthquake recurrence on the Hyde Fault is episodic, in contrast to other well-studied faults within Otago, suggesting diverse recurrence styles may co-exist in the same fault system. This poses challenges for characterising the seismic hazard potential of faults in the region, particularly when paleoearthquake records are limited to the most recent few events. The glacio-fluvial sediments of the Whataroa Valley on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island contain a record of environmental change since the Last Glacial Maximum. The valley is cut by the Australia–Pacific plate-bounding Alpine Fault, the position of which is obscured by recent glacio-fluvial outwash deposits. Five seismic profiles collected across the inferred surface trace of the Alpine Fault between 2011 and 2018, using a variety of source types, are presented here; these profiles provide constraints on the fault's location in the upper few hundred metres of the near surface. The sedimentary strata in the Whataroa Valley have been classified into seismic facies based on their reflectivity characteristics. Two reflective seismic facies, recognisable in all profiles, have been interpreted to correspond to recent fluvial outwash gravels (seismic facies 1) and older post-glacial glaciofluvial or marine sediments (seismic facies 2). These reflective packages are cut by Alpine Fault rupture surfaces with reverse motion dips of 60° to 80° and total throw of up to 50 m. Faults imaged in three of the profiles are interpreted to correspond to the most recent surface rupture of the Alpine Fault, due to their close proximity to a recently trenched surface scarp. We present the results of a paleoseismic study of the Akatore Fault in the low seismicity region of Otago, New Zealand. Two trenches reveal at least three reverse fault ruptures that are constrained to have occurred between 13,314 B.C. and 680 A.D. (antepenultimate event), 737 and 960 A.D. (penultimate event) and 1047 and 1278 A.D. (most recent event), with a single-event displacements of 1.6–2.5 m. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) profiles and sediment analyses show that a 125 ka marine terrace is likely also only displaced by these three events, suggesting these earthquakes have ended a minimum 110,000 year period of quiescence on the fault. The fault therefore appears to exhibit strong aperiodicity of earthquake occurrence, a characteristic previously suggested for the Akatore Fault and other well-studied Otago faults. Slip rate and recurrence interval for the current active period are 0.3–6.0 mm/yr and 450–5110 years respectively. We suggest that for seismic hazard assessments in nearby Dunedin it is prudent to assume that the high rates of recent earthquakes will continue into the immediate future on the Akatore Fault. The geometry of the upper-crustal portion of the Alpine Fault plate boundary on New Zealand's South Island, is poorly constrained where it cuts through the sedimentary units of the Westland coastal plain. Two seismic reflection and gravity lines are presented here to better image the upper km of the fault beneath the most recent fault rupture scarps south of the Haast River. Analysis of the seismic lines suggests that multiple fault strands have cut across post-glacial sedimentary strata that overlie the glacially eroded basement. Total combined fault offsets of 39 m at the Haast River and 33 m at the Turnbull River over <17 ka is consistent with previously determined uplift rates. Dip on the fault strands is interpreted to be between ∼53 and ∼76° SE. 2D gravity profiles constrain the interpretation of the interface between sedimentary units and basement, which has considerable 3D variability resulting from glacial erosion processes. Double Benioff Zones (DBZ) are ubiquitous in subduction systems worldwide, but the stress systems that give rise to them are not well known. We characterise stress orientations in the upper and lower bands of a DBZ in the dipping subducted Pacific plate beneath the southern Hikurangi margin, New Zealand. Stress orientations were calculated from focal mechanisms with 10 or more polarity picks, using a Bayesian stress inversion technique. The stress orientations in the upper band of seismicity are consistent with a down-dip extensional stress regime, whereas stress orientations within the lower band of seismicity are consistent with a down-dip compressional stress regime. This demonstrates that bending stresses are dominant within the Pacific plate beneath the southern North Island, possibly due to subduction beneath thickened mantle lithosphere of the Australian plate. A c. AD 1620 West Coast earthquake has been attributed to the northern and central segments of the Alpine Fault but does not match well with paleoseismic indicators or the currently understood recurrence interval of Alpine Fault ruptures. We model the landsliding and resulting river aggradation from a Mw 7.6 earthquake on a modelled reverse fault located between the central Alpine Fault and the main divide of the Southern Alps. The Waiho-Callery and Whataroa catchments are significantly more impacted by coseismic landsliding from this Southern Alps earthquake than from an Alpine Fault earthquake. The modelling suggests that the c. AD 1620 earthquake was not an Alpine Fault event, and that large earthquakes on subsidiary faults (or fault systems) can have larger localised impacts on river behaviour west of the Southern Alps than an Alpine Fault earthquake. Paleoseismology has been making an important contribution to understanding the Alpine Fault and the hazard it poses to society. However, evidence of past earthquakes comes from a wide variety of sources and publication of the evidence has been somewhat fragmented. Here, we review physical evidence for past large to great earthquakes on the Alpine Fault to summarise current understanding, illustrate progress and highlight future directions. Paleoseismic evidence has been derived from tree disturbance, landscape features and trenches across the fault. These records have been supplemented and extended back in time with sedimentary evidence of Alpine Fault earthquakes from fault-proximal lakes and wetlands. In this review, we update radiocarbon analyses using recent calibration curves and modern Bayesian statistical methods where necessary to enable comparison between on-fault, fault-proximal and off-fault earthquake records. Over recent decades, Alpine Fault paleoseismology has progressed from playing an important role in demonstrating that large surface-rupturing earthquakes occur, to enabling estimates of earthquake recurrence behaviour, shaking intensities, rupture extents, landscape response durations and likelihood of the next earthquake. In recent years, the three-dimensional seismic method has become an essential tool for the interpretation of subsurface stratigraphy and depositional systems. Seismic stratigraphy, in conjunction with seismic geomorphology, has elevated the degree to which seismic data can facilitate geological interpretation, especially in deep-water environments. Techniques such as time slicing and interval attribute analysis can enhance geomorphological interpretations and, when integrated with stratigraphic analyses, can yield insights regarding the distribution of seal and reservoir facies. Sweetness is a seismic attribute that can be very useful for channel detection in deep-water clastic settings, especially when used in conjunction with coherency in plan view. In this article, we present an example of a deep-water channel complex from a three-dimensional seismic volume that is derived using co-rendered sweetness and semblance attributes. The advantages of and workflow followed for the co-rendered attributes are discussed. The application of this technique to a dataset in the offshore Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, has led to the observation of four channel elements: (1) point-bars, (2) the migration of channel meander loops, (3) channel erosion and cutting, and (4) avulsion. This technique enables the detailed visualisation of complex depositional elements, and could be used to predict sands in the channel systems, which is of vital importance for evaluating the distribution of deep-water sandstone reservoirs. This paper discusses simulated ground motion intensity, and its underlying modelling assumptions, for great earthquakes on the Alpine Fault. The simulations utilise the latest understanding of wave propagation physics, kinematic earthquake rupture descriptions and the three-dimensional nature of the Earth's crust in the South Island of New Zealand. The effect of hypocentre location is explicitly examined, which is found to lead to significant differences in ground motion intensities (quantified in the form of peak ground velocity, PGV) over the northern half and southwest of the South Island. Comparison with previously adopted empirical ground motion models also illustrates that the simulations, which explicitly model rupture directivity and basin-generated surface waves, lead to notably larger PGV amplitudes than the empirical predictions in the northern half of the South Island and Canterbury. The simulations performed in this paper have been adopted, as one possible ground motion prediction, in the ‘Project AF8’ Civil Defence Emergency Management exercise scenario. The similarity of the modelled ground motion features with those observed in recent worldwide earthquakes as well as similar simulations in other regions, and the notably higher simulated amplitudes than those from empirical predictions, may warrant a re-examination of regional impact assessments for major Alpine Fault earthquakes. At the eastern boundary of the south Taupo Rift, the NE-striking, rift-bounding Rangipo and the ENE-striking Wahianoa active normal faults intersect. We investigate their intersection at the Upper Waikato Stream to understand the kinematics of a rift termination in an active volcanic area. The Upper Waikato Stream Fault is a previously unrecognised seismogenic source also at the eastern boundary, capable of producing aMW6.5 and up toMW7.1 earthquake if it ruptures in conjunction with the Rangipo or Wahianoa faults. We found a minimum of 12 surface-rupturing earthquakes in the last 45.16 ka on the Upper Waikato Stream Fault (mean slip-rate c. 0.5 mm/yr), and a minimum of nine surface-rupturing earthquakes in the last 133 ka on the Wahianoa Fault (mean slip-rate c. 0.2 mm/yr). Periods of highest slip-rate on these faults may coincide in time with Taupo, Ruapehu or Tongariro eruptions, but, despite their intersection, movement was not coincident across all faults. The Upper Waikato Stream Fault responded to a major Taupo Volcano eruption, the Wahianoa to a major eruptive sequence from Mt Tongariro and the Rangipo to major explosive events from Mt Ruapehu. The North Westland deformation front runs offshore for 320 km between Cape Farewell and Hokitika at a distance of 3–30 km from the coast. From marine seismic reflection profiles integrated with published sediment core and coastal uplift data, we infer late Quaternary activity on six major reverse faults. The principal structures are the Cape Foulwind, Kahurangi and Kongahu faults and the newly named Farewell, Elizabeth and Razorback faults. They include Late Cretaceous and Paleogene rift faults that were reactivated as reverse faults during the late Cenozoic. Best estimates of late Quaternary (<120 ka) slip rates for different faults range from 0.05–0.75 mm a–1. Nine potential earthquake sources are identified, including four segments of the Cape Foulwind Fault. They are of length c. 20–120 km, are potentially capable of producing moderate- to large-magnitude earthquakes ofMw6.7–7.8 and represent a seismic risk to coastal communities. Best estimates of recurrence intervals for individual fault sources range from about 7600 years to 30,400 years, with large uncertainties in slip rates of up to –0.4, +1.0 mm a–1reflected by the wide range of recurrence intervals. The earthquake and tsunami potential of the southern Hikurangi subduction interface has been assessed by reviewing current research in paleoseismology, paleotsunami, geodesy and passive and active source seismology. In addition, new interpretations of seismic lines are presented demonstrating the location and influence of splay faults and a modelling study examines the sensitivity of tsunami in Cook Strait to the southern termination of Hikurangi earthquake ruptures. Key conclusions are: the southern portion of the Hikurangi interface, south of c. 40°S, is currently strongly coupled and experiences great megathrust earthquakes ofMw>8 (some of which may also rupture further north); the downdip limits of strong coupling at southern Hikurangi are outlined by slow slip events and non-volcanic tremor; and the behaviour at the updip limit and the southern termination will be strongly influenced by splay faults. The 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence includes the 22 February 2011 Christchurch aftershock (Mw6.2), the June 2011Mw6.0 aftershock and the December 2011 magnitude (ML) 5.8 and 6.0 aftershocks. These events caused widespread liquefaction, landslides and heavy building damage and collapse. To better understand the contributions of the source, path and site effects to these damaging ground motions, we compute broadband synthetic seismograms for the largestMw5.9 + aftershocks of the 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence at near-source sites. We employ a stochastic approach to compute the seismograms that is not only controlled by detailed source models but also by regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive Canterbury strong-motion dataset. Our results show that using appropriate stress drop value and site-specific amplification functions helps greatly to reproduce key engineering parameters such as peak ground accelerations (PGAs) and response spectra. The Kerepehi Fault is an active normal fault with a total onshore length of up to 80 km comprising six geometric/rupture segments, with four more offshore segments to the north. For the last 20 ± 2.5 ka the slip rate has been 0.08–0.4 mm a–1. Average fault rupture recurrence intervals are 5 ka or less on the central segments and 10 ka or more on low slip rate segments to the north and south. Characteristic earthquakes for a single segment rupture range fromMw5.5 to 7.0, and up toMw7.2 or 7.4 in the unlikely event of rupture of all the onshore fault segments. Fault rupture would result in damage to unreinforced masonry buildings, chimneys and parapets in Auckland (45 km nearest distant). Very severe damage to buildings in towns within the Hauraki Plains without specific seismic design (those built before 1960) may pose a significant risk to life and livelihood. Understanding the mechanisms and dynamics of deformation at plate boundaries requires high-resolution images of strain and deformation sources. Vertical derivatives of horizontal stress (VDoHS) rates are the horizontal-component surface manifestation of all subsurface deformation sources, and have substantially higher spatial resolution than GPS velocities or strain rates. We calculate VDoHS rates from GPS data at the Hikurangi subduction margin. We evaluate our results in the context of interseismic coupling on the subduction interface and upper plate deformation processes. Instead of the expected rifting signal we find strong contraction within the Taupo Volcanic Zone, indicating non-tectonic effects from magmatic and/or hydrothermal processes. Differences betweenSHmaxdirections from historical seismicity (Townend et al. 2012) and our maximum contraction directions demonstrate that at the Hikurangi margin historical seismicity and active faulting are strongly controlled by long-term processes, such as rotation of the forearc, rather than short-term, elastic strain from interseismic subduction interface locking. We model regional stresses before and after theMw7.1 Darfield earthquake of September 2010 in Canterbury, New Zealand including crustal structure derived from seismic tomography. Models show that the Banks Peninsula volcanic assemblage acts as a strong, rigid block that pinches out ductile layers in the mid-crust but has little effect on shallower principal stress orientations. Static stress changes from the Darfield earthquake are everywhere <25 MPa except within 5 km of the fault. When added to regional stresses, these create only small rotations of <5° in the orientation of maximum horizontal stressSHmax, even near the fault. Predicted stress rotations do not correlate strongly with those inferred from aftershock focal mechanisms. The perturbations caused by earthquake stresses are not significant enough to explain either the magnitude or the sense ofSHmaxrotations near the fault at seismogenic depths. Foraminiferal faunas in 29 short cores (maximum depth 7 m) of estuarine and coastal wetland sediment were used to reconstruct the middle–late Holocene (last 7 ka) elevational history on the southern shores of Poverty Bay, North Island, New Zealand. This coast is on the southwest side of a rapidly subsiding area beneath western Poverty Bay. Modern Analogue Technique paleo-elevation estimates based on fossil foraminiferal faunas indicate that the four study areas have gradual late Holocene (<3.5 ka) subsidence rates that increase from the southwest (mean c. 0.5 m ka–1) to northeast (mean c. 1.0 m ka–1). Only two rapid, possibly co-seismic, vertical displacement events are recognised: (1) c. 1.2 m of subsidence at 5.7 ± 0.4 ka (cal yr BP), which may have been generated by a subduction interface earthquake centred offshore and recorded in other published studies in northern Hawkes Bay, c. 35 km to the south; and (2) c. 1 m of uplift (relative sea-level fall) at c. 4.5 ± 0.3 ka, which might have been generated by rupture on an offshore upper plate fault that also uplifted coastal terraces at Pakarae and Mahia, 40 km to the north and south of the study area, or by rupture on the subduction interface penetrating beneath Poverty Bay. An analysis of boulders displaced during the September 2010 MW 7.1 Darfield (Canterbury) earthquake provides non-instrumental constraints on the variability, distribution and origin of strong ground motion during major earthquakes. Boulders ranging in mass from 10 to 5000 kg were displaced 8–970 cm laterally from hosting soil sockets of <1 cm to 50 cm depth at several sites in the Port Hills, roughly 35 km southeast of the earthquake epicentre. Boulder displacement was observed on N-striking (000–015°) ridges above c. 400 m elevation but not on NE-, NW- and SE-striking ridges. The prevailing boulder horizontal displacement azimuth of 250±20° is subparallel with the direction of instrumentally recorded transient peak ground horizontal displacements. Boulder displacement distance has no correlation with displacement azimuth, boulder mass or soil socket depth and has a partial correlation with slope angle. The lateral displacement of many boulders from low slope (<10°) ground surfaces on ridge crests exceeds nearby instrumentally recorded peak ground displacements at lower elevations by up to an order of magnitude, implying that seismic waves were amplified at the study sites. Preliminary 2-D FLAC modelling suggests that topographic amplification may explain this observation. The co-existence of displaced and non-displaced boulders at proximal (<1 m spacing) sites also suggests small-scale ground motion variability and/or varying boulder-ground dynamic interactions relating to shallow phenomena such as variability in soil depth, bedrock fracture density and/or microtopography on the bedrock–soil interface. Remapping of boulders following the February 2011 MW 6.2 Christchurch earthquake reveals no subsequent relocation despite locally recorded horizontal and vertical ground accelerations well in excess of the Darfield earthquake and pervasive rockfalls and landslides elsewhere. This study successfully identifies some of the major controls on spatial ground motion variability at non-instrumented locations and highlights the complexity of ground response at different spatial scales and for different earthquake characteristics. Earthquake ruptures of the 2010–2011 Canterbury sequence exploit a varying mixture of optimally oriented newly formed faults and inherited discontinuities that are favourably oriented for reactivation within the prevailing tectonic stress field. Reinterpretation of subsurface data shows that the Torlesse basement is imprinted with an E–W fault fabric inherited from Late Cretaceous–Eocene rifting. The prevailing E–W band of rupturing illuminated by seismicity lies at the southern boundary of a Late Cretaceous basin, terminating against the Banks Peninsula structural high. Analysis of a set of seismic lines in the Ashley River region (c. 30 km north of the Greendale fault) demonstrates compressional inversion of inherited high-angle E–W normal faults and folding and detachment of the Neogene cover sequence, together with propagation of new faults through the Pliocene and Quaternary cover sequences. Palaeoseismic trenching along the central Ostler fault zone reveals the nature and timing of past surface-rupturing earthquakes. A 26 m long trench excavated into a last-glacial (26.5 ka) outwash surface cut by the Ruataniwha strand of the North Central Ostler fault reveals evidence for at least two metre-scale surface displacements in the last c. 8 ka. Detailed logging of colluvial wedge and alluvial stratigraphy, combined with optically stimulated luminescence dating of loess within colluvial packages, provides a maximum bound on the most recent earthquake (MRE) of 2.3–4.5 ka. The MRE resulted in a surface displacement of at least 1.8 m, consistent with an estimated moment magnitude (M) 6.9–7.1 earthquake based on the total 60 km length of the Ostler fault zone. The penultimate event occurred sometime before 4.1–8.4 ka and resulted in a comparable or larger surface displacement. Similar ages from samples collected in previous trenches on the Ostler fault suggest that surface ruptures may persist across kilometre-scale stepovers defined by the active surface trace of the fault. At the trench scale, comparison between dip slip calculated from topographic fault-scarp profiling (7.8 m) and the total offset of exposed outwash gravels (6.0 m) suggests that surface folding immediately adjacent to the fault scarp accommodates roughly 25% of the total slip. Given a previously reported recurrence interval of c. 2–5 ka for the Ostler fault, the presence of only 2–3 palaeoearthquakes on the 26.5 ka outwash surface indicates that additional events likely occurred on nearby fault scarps in an overall complex zone of surface faulting. The Waka Nui-1 petroleum exploration well, about 90 km west of Northland, is the only offshore well north of Auckland and provides important lithologic and age control for interpretations of seismic reflection surveys in the petroleum-prospective Northland and Reinga basins. It is especially important because it intersects a nearly complete Cenozoic sequence and Mesozoic Murihiku Supergroup rocks, all of which may be part of the petroleum system in these basins. Correlation with seismic data is uncertain because neither sonic logs nor check shot data were acquired during drilling operations. This short communication documents the development of a two-way time- (TWT-) depth relationship derived by careful analysis of stacking velocities from nearby petroleum industry seismic data and logging-while-drilling logs from Waka Nui-1. Using this correlation, the age and lithology data from the well can be used to infer the age of unconformities and seismic sequences on seismic data in the Northland and Reinga basins. These interpretations provide control on the timing of structural events and the evolution of depositional processes in this region of extensive sedimentary accumulation and are vital for predicting the prospectivity of the basins. An important component of quantifying seismic hazard and risk in regions such as Wellington is to characterise both the long-term rate of occurrence of the region's major earthquake-generating active faults, as well as potential interactions between faults (e.g., the potential for earthquake triggering). This paper describes paleoseismic data from two trenches (Ohariu Valley) and a natural streambank exposure (Horokiri valley) c. 24 km apart, which constrain the timing and size of recent surface rupture events on the northeast striking Ohariu Fault c. 6 km northwest of Wellington City. One event is recorded at all three sites and radiocarbon age constraints indicate it correlates with the 1050-1000 cal. years BP event previously identified elsewhere along the fault. A younger, smaller (decimetre-scale) event is recorded in one of the Ohariu Valley trenches, and the timing is constrained by two radiocarbon ages to post-310 cal. years BP. This event may either be a small, primary Ohariu Fault rupture, or a triggered event associated with a large earthquake on a nearby fault. If it is a triggered rupture, then a possible mechanism is dynamic triggering associated with one of the recent large-great earthquakes on the Wellington (post-300 yr), Wairarapa (AD1855), or Awatere (AD1848) Faults. Small rupture events do not necessarily contribute to the recurrence interval classification of the Ministry for the Environment Active Fault Guidelines, but they could be important for sensitive structures crossing the fault and for lifelines crossing multiple active faults. The Repongaere Fault is one of a series of active normal faults within the Raukumara Peninsula, eastern North island, New Zealand. These faults appear to form in response to rapid uplift of the Raukumara Range and related extensional strain. however, the activity of these normal faults is poorly constrained. This paper presents new mapping of the active surface trace of the Repongaere Fault, c. 18 km northwest of Gisborne, and the results of two paleoseismic trenches. These results are then used to assess the seismic hazard posed by this fault and impacts on the Waipaoa Sedimentary System in which the fault is situated. active traces can be mapped for c. 4.5 km, but we infer the surface rupture length to be at least 9 km. Tephras within the trenches constrain the timing of the most recent surface rupture event to have occurred during deposition of the Waimihia Tephra (c. 3400 cal. yr BP), and at least one event in the period c. 13 800-5470 cal. yr BP, with single-event displacements of ≥ 0.4-1.1 m. From these data a mean dip-slip rate of c. 0.1 mm/yr and a maximum recurrence interval of 4490-6900 yr, can be calculated. if the Repongaere Fault is representative of other Raukumara Peninsula normal faults, then this relatively low rate of activity supports the interpretation that these faults are not contributing significantly to the deformation of the Raukumara Peninsula. The low rate of activity is also consistent with the very localised evidence for landscape impacts, a calculated moderate Mw of 6.3-6.7, and the fault's location within the lower part of the Waipaoa River catchment. The middle Clarence valley, or eastern, section of the active Clarence Fault bounds the steep southeast flank of the Inland Kaikoura Range, Marlborough, New Zealand. This section of the fault extends c. 45 km northeastwards from its junction with the Elliott Fault to Mead Stream, where the active trace of the fault appears to abruptly end. Along the active trace, 41 separate right-lateral offsets of c. 3-40 m were recorded with uncertainties of 10-50% (mean 25%) using tape measurement of displaced topographic features (e.g., gully walls, landslide margins, and ridge crests). Single-event right-lateral displacements of 7 ± 2 m are inferred and indicate earthquake magnitudes of Mw 7.2-7.9. Probable rupture lengths have been in excess of 45 km, which suggests that rupture of the middle Clarence valley (eastern) section of the fault extended to the west onto the central Clarence and/or Elliott Faults. Stream incision through the uphill-facing fault scarp at Ravine Stream and Dead Horse Gully has exposed progressively faulted peat and charcoal horizons. Elsewhere, there are several exposures of unfaulted sediments. Twelve radiocarbon samples dated from these horizons constrain the timing of the four most recent surface-rupture earthquakes on the Clarence Fault in the study area. The most recent surface rupture took place at c. 1700-1900 cal. yr BP (rounded to the nearest hundred years), with two surface ruptures since c. 3400 cal. yr BP, three since 6700 cal. yr BP, and most likely a fourth surface rupture at c. 6600-6900 cal. yr BP. These data suggest a recurrence interval for surface-rupture earthquakes of c. 1700 yr, and imply a lateral slip rate of c. 4 mm/yr (i.e., c. 7 m of slip every c. 1700 yr). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trenching of two fault strands that form part of the 21 km long, and up to 2 km wide Whirinaki Fault, Taupo Rift, New Zealand, shows that surface fault rupture has occurred at least eight times during the past 26.5 kyr. Single-event displacements on each strand vary from a few decimetres to perhaps >2.5 m. Fault trace mapping, geomorphic analysis, and paleoseismic studies indicate a maximum magnitude for the Whirinaki Fault of c. Mw 6.6, with a recurrence interval of between 1000 and 4000 yr. The variability of single-event displacement and timing of rupture on the two strands is attributed to various unsegmented and segmented rupture modes. Airfall tephra revealed in the trenches span the past 26.5 kyr, and provide time horizons to enable interpretation of how slip has accumulated on each of the strands of the fault. Temporal variation in slip rate ranges from 0.3 to 1.5 mm/yr and is indicative of spatial and temporal changes in the locus of strain in the Taupo Rift and the interdependence of the displacement rates and paleoearthquakes in the area. The 30 km long Paeroa Fault is one of the largest and fastest slipping (c. 1.5 mm/yr vertical displacement rate) normal faults of the currently active Taupo Rift of North island, New Zealand. Along its northern section, seven trenches excavated across 5 of 11 subparallel fault strands show that successive ruptures of individual strands probably occurred at the same time, but were individually and collectively highly variable in size and recurrence, and most fault strands have ruptured three or four times in the past 16 kyr. in the c. 16 kyr timeframe, four surface-rupturing earthquakes took place when Okataina volcano was erupting, and six occurred between eruptions. Large earthquakes on the Paeroa Fault comprise a significant component of the seismic hazard in the region between the Okataina and Taupo Volcanic Centres, and there are partial associations between these large earthquakes and volcanism. Sediment weakening due to increased local pore fluid pressure is interpreted to be the cause of a submarine landslide that has been seismically imaged off the southwest coast of New Zealand. Data show a distinct and continuous bottom-simulating reflection (BSR)--a seismic phenomena indicative of the presence of marine gas hydrate--below the continental shelf from water depths of c. 2400 m to c. 750 m, where it intersects the seafloor. Excess pore fluid pressure (EPP) generated in a free gas zone below the base of gas hydrate stability is interpreted as being a major factor in the slope's destabilisation. Representative sediment strength characteristics have been applied to limit-equilibrium methods of slope stability analysis with respect to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion to develop an understanding of the feature's sensitivity to EPP. EPP has been modelled with representative material properties (internal angle of friction, bulk soil unit weight and cohesion) to show the considerable effect it has on stability. The best estimate of average EPP being solely responsible for failure is 1700 kPa, assuming a perfectly elastic body above a pre-defined failure surface in a static environment. Six trenches and additional exposures have been investigated along a 23 km length of the Pahiatua section of the Wellington Fault. The sites show a consistent fault rupture record for the last four surface-faulting events along the Pahiatua section. This multi-site record of events, supported by 28 radiocarbon ages that span the last c. 4500 yr, is the most complete paleoseismic record for the Wellington Fault. From southwest to northeast, the trenches are called death-1 and -2, Hughes-2 and -1, and ebbett-2 and -1, named after local farmers. Additional data come from an exposure at the Army Depot northeast of Ebbett-1 and a stream cutting near the Death-1 trench. Earthquake events are recognised on the basis of upward terminations of faults and stratigraphic evidence (unconformities; scarp-derived colluvial deposits; "co-seismically" generated, organic, poorly sorted units; and subsequent scarp-ponded units). On this basis, evidence for the most recent surface-faulting event is recognised at all sites (i.e., between death-1 and the army depot site) and has a timing of ad 1670-1800 (150-280 cal. yr BP). The penultimate faulting event has been recognised at all six trenches and occurred between ad 690 and 1170 (780-1260 cal. yr BP). Clear evidence, and datable material associated with events III and IV, is observed only in the older records of the Ebbett-1 and Hughes trenches. Event iii is bracketed by faulting and two ages on co-seismic deposits to the interval ad 65 to 400 BC (1885-2350 cal. yr BP). Event IV is bracketed by three key ages in the Hughes-1 trench to the interval 1600-2140 BC (3550-4090 cal. yr BP). The trench-derived recurrence interval based on these four events is c. 1200 ± 110 yr, which is consistent with, though longer than, an estimate of the recurrence interval based on slip rate (5.1-6.2 mm/yr) and single-event displacement (4.5 ± 1 m), which gave a range of 820 ± 260 yr. When the current paleoseismic data for the Wellington Fault are considered together, they suggest that: (1) the last four large earthquakes along the Pahiatua section have involved rupture of the entire section; (2) these events broadly correlate with other dated paleoearthquake events along the Wellington-Hutt Valley segment and Tararua section of the fault, and the southern end of the Mohaka Fault; (3) the most recent faulting event along the Pahiatua section is somewhat younger than for the Wellington-Hutt Valley segment or Tararua section; and (4) either single or dual segment/section rupture scenarios existed along these four fault sections. The Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) in New Zealand is monitored by a network of five telemetered, vertical-component, short-period seismographs. Between 1995 and 2005, 24 earthquakes were located in the Auckland region. Ten of these were located reasonably reliably (position and depth uncertainty ≤10 kin) and all of these were <15 km deep. Only one of these earthquakes occurred within the AVF. Magnitudes ranged from ML 1.6 to 3.3, and five earthquakes of ML ≥2.4 were felt. There were few reliably located earthquakes because most were not recorded by the whole network owing to their relatively low magnitude and a high level of background noise. The Auckland earthquakes are believed to represent normal background seismicity and are not thought to be eruption precursors. All earthquakes were of high-frequency, tectonic type; no low-frequency, volcanic earthquakes were recorded. Based on seismic precursors to eruptions from historically active volcanic fields, we estimate that precursory earthquakes could occur as little as 2 weeks before an Auckland eruption and they could be as large as ML 4.5-5.5. Based on the depth of the background seismicity in Auckland, and previous estimates of the ascent rate and source depth of AVF magmas, we calculate a precursory period as short as a few days. Our best estimate of the length of pre-eruption seismicity is therefore a few days to a few weeks. The largest precursory earthquakes could be large enough to be felt by most of the population who live in Auckland City. During a magmatic intrusion, deep long-period earthquakes might occur at c. 30 km as magma ascends into the crust. Earthquakes would probably have to be a lot shallower, perhaps only 5 km, before their epicentres might be useful for estimating the location of any eruption. Geodetic monitoring methods (GPS and InSAR) might perform as well as seismic monitoring for identifying unrest, but they have significant limitations. To better monitor and interpret precursory seismicity from the AVF, an increase in the number of seismographs and an improvement in our understanding of the local crustal structure are needed. The Awatere Fault is one of four principal strike-slip faults within the obliquely convergent plate boundary zone in northeastern South Island, New Zealand. The eastern section of the fault last ruptured in 1848, in the Mw c. 7.5 Marlborough earthquake, when surface rupture was traced by first-hand accounts from the South Island's east coast inland to Barefell Pass (c. 110 km). We excavated two paleoseismic trenches near Upcot Saddle on the eastern section of the fault, c. 70 km inland from the coast. Interpretation of crosscutting relationships between sediments exposed in these trenches, in association with 21 radiocarbon dates, suggest at least 5, and possibly 6, events have ruptured this part of the Awatere Fault in the last 5600 yr. These events include a young rupture (>300 cal. yr BP) that is presumed to be the surface rupture of the 1848 Marlborough earthquake. The Upcot Saddle rupture history is combined with paleoseismic data from two previous trenches, located c. 55 km to the northeast at Lake Jasper, to infer a chronology of 9-10 events between AD 1848 and 8610 cal. yr BP on the eastern section. These 9-10 events define a mean recurrence interval of 820-950 cal. yr on that fault, which is within error of the mean recurrence interval calculated using available data on late Quaternary slip rates (6 ± 2 mm/yr) and mean coseismic slip during the 1848 earthquake (5.3 ± 1.6 m). The Awatere Fault is an important element of obliquely convergent plate boundary zone in northeastern South Island, New Zealand, and is comprised of two geomorphically distinct sections that join across a complex junction in the upper Awatere Valley. The Mw c. 7.5 Marlborough earthquake of 1848 ruptured a c. 110 km length of eastern section of the Awatere Fault, from the South Island's east coast extending inland to at least Barefell Pass. This study attempts to document the coseismic slip distribution during the 1848 earthquake rupture. We examine a previously unmapped length of the fault trace in the upper Awatere Valley, along which we measured as many small (metre-scale) geomorphic displacements as possible. Based on these data, and previous observations of inferred 1848 slip on parts of the Awatere Fault, we infer that the 1848 earthquake had a mean coseismic displacement of 5.3 ± 1.6 m, a surface rupture length of 100-110 km, and a moment magnitude Mw = 7.4-7.7. This new moment magnitude estimate supports previous estimates based on regressions of geometrical rupture parameters inferred for the 1848 earthquake and attenuation models of felt intensities. The set of second-smallest horizontal geomorphic displacements (c. 8-15 m) are approximately double those attributed to the 1848 earthquake, suggesting the penultimate event was of a similar magnitude to the 1848 earthquake. Holocene terraces at Turakirae Head on the south coast of the North Island, New Zealand, record four recent earthquakes from simultaneous rupture of the Wairarapa Fault and flexure of the Rimutaka Anticline. The lowest tread and riser is the modern marine platform and storm beach that began forming when the area was raised during the Mw 8.2 Wairarapa earthquake of AD 1855 January. The remaining chronology is established by radiocarbon dating, in situ 10Be surface-exposure dating, and slip-predictable uplift estimation. Prior to AD 1855, uplifts occurred at 110-430 BC (max. 9.1 m), 2164-3468 BC (6.8 m), and 4660-4970 BC (7.3 m). Earlier uplift of unknown magnitude occurred at c. 7000 BC but went unrecorded because of rapidly rising sea level. Sea level was still rising when the two oldest surviving beach ridges were raised. Uplift at Turakirae Head in AD 1855 varied from 1.5 m at the Wainuiomata River to 6.4 m at the crest of the Rimutaka Anticline. Older beaches also are tilted, with the amount of tilt increasing with age. Coastal uplift at the anticline crest has averaged 3.32 ± 0.17 mm/yr over the past 9000 yr, and has changed little over the past 0.5 m.y. Uplift fits a slip-predictable model of earthquake occurrence, and is log-normally distributed with a mean of 7.3 ± 0.7 m. The most frequently occurring uplift is 7.1 ± 0.9 m. Uplift in AD 1855 was not significantly smaller than mean or mode, suggesting that the Turakirae Head sequence records four great earthquakes of at least similar magnitude to that of AD 1855. The mean earthquake recurrence interval is 2194 ± 117 yr; the modal interval is 2122 ± 193 yr. At the crest of the anticline, the coastal platform was cut entirely during the postglacial rise of sea level until shortly before 4660-4970 BC. Away from the crest, however, it may have been partially cut during low sea level of the penultimate glaciation. An exceptional fossil assemblage of the ectoparasitic whale barnacle Coronula diadema was recently discovered from late Pliocene-Pleistocene sediments outcropping on the coast of Ecuador where today humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate for breeding. A similar occurrence is recorded in New Zealand and in Vanuatu, where late Pliocene-Pleistocene fossil coronulids have been found in sediments along the coasts that are current humpback whale migration routes. In both Ecuador and New Zealand we have collected fragmentary whale remains in association with these barnacle assemblages. Considering that detachment of whale barnacles from extant humpback whales has only been observed in breeding areas or along migratory routes, we view the Ecuador and New Zealand fossil barnacle assemblages as indirect evidence of whale migration during the late Neogene. Application of this hypothesis to the distribution pattern of fossil Coronula in the Mediterranean Basin, indicates that, unlike the present, mysticete whales may have used the Mediterranean as a breeding ground during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. A trench across the Ohariu Fault at MacKays Crossing revealed evidence and provided radiocarbon age constraints for three surface-rupture events in the last 5300 cal. yr BP. The two older events are dated for the first time at 5270-4410 and 4810-3260 cal. yr BP. The youngest event is correlated to the most recent event, dated elsewhere along the Ohariu Fault, at 1050-1000 cal. yr BP. Using statistical methods incorporating inter-event times, mean slip rate, and single-event displacement, and their uncertainties, a best estimate mean recurrence interval of 2200 yr is calculated for the Ohariu Fault, with minimum and maximum 68% and 95% confidence interval limits of 1300 and 3800 yr, and 800 and 7000 yr, respectively. Following the procedures outlined in the Ministry for the Environment Guidelines, these data place the Ohariu Fault in Fault-avoidance Recurrence Interval Class II (>2000 to ≤3500 yr), with medium to low confidence of classification. Data from the permanent broadband seismic station SNZO and temporary broadband deployments have been used to test the operation of the regional, full waveform inversion source mechanism determination technique of Dreger and Helmberger (1991) in New Zealand. An amplitude ratio technique similar to the AMPRAT technique, which is widely used in New Zealand, was also tested with the same data. Tests using synthetic data showed that the waveform inversion is not reliable if data from only one station are available, but that the reliability of the technique improves when a second station is added, and the reliability is directly proportional to the azimuthal separation of the stations. Addition of a third station further improves the results. To test the applicability of these synthetic results, regional earthquakes with moment tensors published between 1992 and 1997, and which were recorded at SNZO, were investigated using the waveform inversion technique. Where possible, additional data from temporary broadband deployments were also included in the inversion. The results of these tests on the 11 events support the synthetic results. While two of the events returned source mechanisms consistent with the published solutions, there was no known way to separate the consistent from the inconsistent mechanisms, making it impossible to use the technique reliably with data from only one station. When further stations were available for addition to the inversion, the results were improved. However, there were insufficient events recorded at multiple stations to reach any firm conclusions. The same events were analysed using an amplitude ratio technique plus first motion polarities from the New Zealand short period network, and similar results were found. The amplitude ratio technique was more reliable than the waveform inversion when only one station (plus first motions) was used, with six of the events returning source mechanisms consistent with the published solutions. This was not sufficiently reliable to guarantee good results. Addition of further stations again improved the reliability of the results. Late Quaternary structure and kinematics at the southern termination of the Taupo Rift are investigated by means of active fault mapping and estimates of fault displacement and extension rates. Active faults in the southern Taupo Rift are normal in sense and include three major structures: the NNE-trending Mt Ruapehu Graben; the E-W to ESE-WNW-trending Ohakune-Raetihi fault set; and the NE-trending Karioi fault set. Displacements of young geomorphic features, fault plane exposures in roadcuts, and trenches across faults show that all faults are active contemporaneously. The Mt Ruapehu Graben is the southern extension of the modern (i.e., <26 ka) Taupo Rift (or Taupo Fault Belt, TFB), and has developed as a result of backarc extension related to the Hikurangi subduction margin. Geologic extension rate for the Mt Ruapehu Graben is estimated here at 2.3 ± 1.2 mm/yr. The other two structures strike almost perpendicular to the Taupo Rift terminating the Mt Ruapehu Graben to the south. The co-existence of three normal fault sets in mutual crosscutting relations and with no significant strike-slip on any of them may be related to local reorientation of the minimum principal stress axis (σ3) or to a stress tensor where |σ3| ≈ |σ2|.
